@@chrischoir3594 you should hope and wish and pray to have the talent Pat has under his pinky nail in you. Lmao, hater. Troll elsewhere and move out of your Moms basement.
Onkel Po’s club in Hamburg. A place with a vibe. Where Al Jarreau launched practically 5 years earlier. Why did that time create the music that transformed us all? Where did it go? No one in this video that night cared a kick about social media or what to E it was. We all just listened- and want d more. Some of even took up our own musical journey. Man it was great. I need to look forward but looking back teaches me so much - and it seems more alive than ever. I’m grateful I can studio this music now and learn from it. What a gift.
The BEST band I personally ever heard. This is a once in a lifetime original sound that is all theirs. Return to forever, weather report-like monumental. Mind blowing.
Great addition to the compendium of Metheny Mays music. Early. Perhaps more jazz influence than later work like Minuano 6/8, First Circle and It’s Just Talk.
I was there, they played 5 nights in a row,I hitchhiked to Hamburg from Frankfurt, saw them twice, slept in some hippie commune and even had a chance to talk to Pat at the bar...it was mindblowing...and we talked about Holdsworth btw still his best band
One of my favourite videos on TH-cam. At least once I week I come here, get my shit together and head back to life. Just love how calm and uplifting it is...
Don't know how I missed this piece.. been following PMG/got most albums/CDs since American Garage.. guess it was overshadowed by something else. This is the original lineup when they were just "kids". THANK YOU for uploading this.
This was on Pat's 1st record..Bright Size Life..a trio record with Jaco and Bob Moses..the group never recorded it together..obviously played it live though..😉
We are so effing lucky this video exists. I missed this lineup by one year (saw them in 1981) and as much as I love what followed, this lineup and this set are it for me.
I remember seeing Pat early 70's. We sat on a rug on the floor and were looking up at the band playing. They were from that day to this among the very best musical groups playing today!
Absolutely knock out. I read somewhere that PM finds TH-cam vids of old gigs a bit galling but, honestly, this is remarkably good. Just a unique concept of sound and composition. This is 1980 but sounds just as good in 2019 as it did 40 years ago.
Great!! This brings back great memories of playing this music in Boston in the late 70's! And of course Pat's excellent Bright Size Life record. Thanks for posting!
He asistido a tantos conciertos de Pat...Pero cuanto me hubiese gustado estar en éste...Veo a esos integrantes del grupo, los que aparecen en la contraportada de American Garage y se me ponen los pelos de punta.
I think That's my preferred and loved Metheny's composition... he said that he don't know why and from where cames the idea & inspiration for this masterpiece... and he's sure that never he will compose another piece at this level... arrived directly from cosmos.... great & thanx for posted it
Amen. I miss hearing Lyle's deep solos on Pat's recordings. Nobody does a better job of creating a solo that tells a story and builds the story to a climax. His left hand playing compliments his right so well.
1 of the best lineups in 1977..80.81.lineup with hayden ,dejon.my 2 fav metheny bands .great stuf thruout but those mine .dad turn me on to 1st album .77 saw zep tull yes elp.but they were up there those 2 lineups.
Great to see the originals back in those heady days of PMG' s formative years. Those of us following them at this time were really intrigued as to what these guys were doing, but we had no idea what was in-store for us. Thank you Mark Egan (bass) and Danny Gotlieb (drums) for helping to crank this phenomenal musical juggernaut up. [!!]
Pat Metheny.... Lyle Mays.... Dan Gottlieb and Marc Egan... I was 13 years old while they were playing in Onkel Pö's in Hamburg.... too young to go.... but from 1985 till 1989 I didn't miss a concert they played in Hamburg even if there were 2 shows on the same day....
I was there too. BSL was in heavy rotation for me. What a great time and place to be a teenager during. What an awesome pool table there at OP. It was a dinky place. But a temple to modern music. Saw a double bill: XTC opening for James Blood Ulmer. Plans For Nigel was epic and huge.
There used to be a performance of "Airstream" from this same Hamburg (1980) gig. Could whoever has the tape of this concert please put that song up once again?!
hey rex. thats his old gibson es-175. i think its from 1958. He took out the bridge pickup as you can see, and the switch, just filled them in. He played this until the late 90s i think (along with his ibanez) but then retired it. He used flat wound strings and turned the tone almost all the way down. Add his true chorus sound invention and micro delay and you got the sound! @ Rex Shaffer
Wow. So great. Heard these guys many times and with Joni Mitchell. The group must have gone through mega gallons of shampoo and conditioner even on one tour.
@boasdubbelman Same here. One of my most favorite Pat Metheny compositions. Also one of my favorite Jaco solos on that record. It's just so poignant over those changes.
Yeah it’s really difficult to play besides a musical hurricane that’s jaco was but of course the most beautiful hurricane in the history of electric bass love you jaco still the best
Pat Metheny guitar , Lyle Mays keyboards, Dan Gottlieb drum and Marc Egan bass. Great quartet

Lyle and Pat. Both so young and already possessing distinct voices - I loved it then and still do. I miss you Lyle. You're still my favorite.

Glad you like it. I have an audio bootleg of Pat's tour for the Bright Size Life album w/ Jaco, and they perform the tune there, too.

All the licks are here with this Lyle Mays solo.Want to hear the ultimate Lyle Mays? Then listen to "Mirrors of the Heart" RIP
God I love this composition it says so much. They were definitely in the zone.
I saw this lineup in Westport, CT, at Player's Tavern when Pat had just released the white abum in 1978. They were unbelievable!!!
I saw the same tour when it hit San Diego State College that year. Fabulous.
Is there a CD from this session?
Breathtaking 💜💜💜💜💜💜

Awesome old Lyle Mays Group video
Metheny el guitarrista No. 1 del mudo!!!
very nice. Surprise to hear it grow to a rocking climax in Pat's solo. Original recording didn't suggest that transformation.
Superb !
thanks for sharing! this just gave me a much needed boost of inspiration.
Thanks a million, cahsberg, for having shared that video.
Thanks Cashberg, this video made me feel sure happy. I listen music from Pat since 1983, and that era was better than these days, less comercial

Mark Egan. He's done some decent Jaco-esque fusion work since Metheny's band.

It would be fun to hear how Pat would approach this solo today. Hard to top it. Great tune!
