Mighty No. 9 is out after three years of waiting. The fans got what they expected... but not at all what they wanted.
Time for a post-mortem then. Let's dissect this corpse and poke at the gooey bits inside.

For a little over 50k Toby Fox made Undertale. For 300k Yacht Club Games made Shovel Knight, plus three extra campaigns and modes to come for free as DLC. And for 4 million Comcept made shit. And has the fucking nerve to charge for its crappy DLC.
And now they are even selling backer's "exclusive" rewards as DLC.
And for NOTHING (as far as crowdfunding goes), ConcernedApe made Stardew Valley.
Also Size Five games made The Swindle with no Kickstarter funding, and that game is amazingly fun.
And Dodgeroll (studio) made Enter the Gungeon with their own money.
Comcept consists of AAA devs, though. Undertale was made while Toby was studying at college and did not have high quality requirements for most of its parts. Shovel Knight ran out of money and the devs spent something like six months in crunch.
All that said, MN9 sounds like it was badly mismanaged. Was it 10 simultaneous platform releases? Madness for such a small studio. Did online coop make it in? Another huge headache. Net code requires a lot of effort to figure out. Doing it with little hassle probably requires an expensive programmer, and skimping on talent in this area usually ends up being very expensive in terms of delays and knock-on effects from what I understand.

Why does no one ever talk about her? She messed shit up as well.

Even if you agree with her views, a community manager is supposed to create harmony between the community and the developers, not hostility. Weird that you didn't bring up *Skullgirls* when talking about indie games that used crowdfunding...
1) It's an indie title that was made by a team of 10 or 12, it wasn't a solo effort.
2) It got into a crowdfunding campaign (Indiegogo) to expand the roster and get better versions
3) It took the time it needed to release the next characters
4) They ported the game to multiple platforms
5) They had issues with publishers... including Konami...
6) On Steam, they asked the people' help using betas to balance the characters
IMO, that's how an indie team should handle crownfunding stuff...

Keiji Inafune was basically the Megaman artist, he was never really the game's designer, Akira Kitamura was. Keiji Inafune even said so much himself on several occasions. The fanbase only has itself to blame for perpetuating this misconception that Keiji Inafune was the guy who made and designed the games.

Idk, a majority of backers are happy with Yooka Laylee. It was sold as a Banjo game from the start, with the good and the bad.
Well the big difference between Mighty No. 9 and Yooka Laylee is that people are satisfied with YL. Sure, the game could have been better obviously, but people still enjoyed it enough and it did feel like a spiritual successor. I'm just hoping the team, if they do a sequel, learn from their mistakes and build upon things. Maybe smaller levels, but more of them with better focus and better controls for the transformation stuff.
Spoiler from the future: Took forever to come out but it was fantastic.

I mean... the thing is, it already has hurt them. People are going to remember this one for quite a while every time they hear the word "kickstarter", and they're going to hesitate to put money down. Even if they end up doing it it's going to add a whole lot of anxiety and paranoia to the mix that isn't going to help anyone. But I think we all knew that was going to happen with the age of crowdfunding still in its infancy, and tbh having a little paranoia to spare is probably going to be a good thing in the long run.

And the legend of MN9's failure continues as this week, a year and a month later, physical boxes were finally shipped and not only do you have to manually assemble your box, but the instruction manual for the game doesn't fit in it.

The Yooka-Laylee people were nice enough to refund me for the game since I originally backed it for the Wii u but if you heard about that fiasco they had to move it to the switch. So since I was not going to buy an all new system for one game they were respectful and showed great customer service and refunded me.

In all fairness, the game *did* make people cry like anime fans on prom night. Of course it was the funders and people who were fans of the game concept that did most of the crying, but hey, it succeeded in that goal at least!
There was probably at least one truly heartbroken fan of both MN9 and Anime who happened to discover how bad it all had gotten on what just happened to be their prom night.
I think Daikatana is the perfect parallel to Mighty No 9. They were both ugly, delayed, glitch riddled messes plagued with obnoxious and repulsive marketing campaigns. John Romero is still awesome though.

What was promised with Yooka-Laylee was a spiritual successor. But what nobody expected was for that game to effectively be a step backwards into an older style rather then a *continuation* of the series' legacy.

A Hat in Time where do I even begin, SUCH A FANTASTIC GAME WITH GREAT CONTROLS, COLORFUL ENVIRONMENTS, AND GOOD STORY/VOICE ACTING. (and no, that was not meant to be taken sarcastically it's actually pretty fun)
And don't forget 20XX, which Kickstarted as Echoes of Eridu, launched into early access, and just recently saw its 1.0 release. It's quite a nice little roguelike Megaman-y thing. Deep Silver could learn a thing or two about how to make trailers from them.

Is that what "Dust: An Elysian Tail" looks like at 9:20? Because wow, that really DOES look better than Mighty No. 9. That minute of gameplay interested me in "Dust" more than the last month of publicity about MN9 put together.
Dude, you need to play it. The game is solid. And you might want to check out Axiom Verge, Rabi-Ribi, and the Momodora series if you like metroidvanias.

I wouldn't really call it furry stuff. Few anthropomorphised works actually are made just to appeal to furries, I don't think Dust is one that was.
That game was so damn good. All the time I played it I didn't know it was made by one person - Dean Dodrill.
You should read his story too if you like this kind of thing. It's a truly inspiring story of persevering through the lowest lows for your passion, and coming out on top in the end (Since the game is so amazing and he's deservedly made a lot of money selling it).
He even put A TON of effort on the PC Port because he takes pride in his work. If more devs were like this guy gaming would be 20 years ahead
I think that's been through several rounds of video compression. Dust: An Elysian Tail actually looks even better in reality, especially the fighting which is too fast-paced and effects heavy to show up well on here. (Also on sale cheap on Steam.)

those games were great. hard as hell, but they had great art style, music, and the RPG elements were fantastic. Kinda felt like a metroidvamia.

Mighty No 9 in it's current state would only be considered ok if it was done by one person. Merely a decent first effort. Still mediocre and amateur. There have been better looking/functioning games that have been done by a single person (hell, we saw them in the video).

It's honestly pretty impressive and fun for how early the build is. Shame it caused a fatal system error on my PC. I think they wanted to show it because they knew Mighty No 9 would raise questions lol, and it did make me feel good about the progress.

LC works fine on console, not great, but not bad. Sad the PC version is bad. The Aniversary edition is the best with 1-8 on 1 disc. LC was a ripoff imo.
Dust was made by one dude and was still really good, the voice acting wasn't great, but it was better than m9. xD

I got the demo, and it made me want more, and thats the best that a demo can do, make the consumer want more of what was presented, so ya, I have too much faith in them

Well the indivisible creators have done kickstarted stuff before while also having experience making games. It'll probably be pretty good.
*+MetalShadowChaos* Heck, you can play all of them; backers of _Bloodstained_ and _Yooka-Laylee_ now have playable demos, and _Indivisible_ had one from the very beginning that anyone with a Steam account can go and download to this day. That's the kind of display of confidence and transparency that causes me not to be worried about any of those projects, despite having immersed myself in the _Mighty No. 9_ debacle over the past week.

Well - kickstarter is exacly that - you put not your money, but your reputation on the line. If you create a bad game for your or your publisher's money - you still can get a second chance. If you so spectaculary fail a kickstarter succsess - it's almost impossible to get you reputation back from that. Espesially not with "it's better then nothing" attitude.

I feel sorry for all the Mega Man fans who were let down by this, I have a friend I remember being so excited about it when it got announced, it sucks that it turned out this way. I was never really interested in Mighty No.9, never played a Mega Man game, I have backed Bloodstained though and stuff like this about Kickstarter projects does come off as worrisome! I played the Backer Demo though the other day and enjoyed what was there, so I'm still pretty optimistic!

Jim you didn't also mention the scandal a few years ago when Comcept hired a community manager who is her own words "had never played Mega Man and wasn't really a fan". Then people found out she got the job purely because she was dating one of the higher ups. then when people started to criticize MN9 on the fan forums she deleted those posts as the community manager and never reported the criticism to her superiors. The she was promoted to an extra artist and started pitching concept art with self insert art of herself into the game. People were pissed.
I was thinking about that through half the video, actually, I'm glad someone else remembers.

I hadn't been following "Mighty Number 9" so when it first came out and I was watching the let's plays my first impression was, "not a bad effort for some little bedroom programmer's first release."
