A year ago, we talked about how Evolve fell out of the "AAA" Bullshit Tree and hit every branch on the way down.
Turtle Rock's multiplayer game of predator and prey prototyped the current trend of unfinished games that used DLC like crutches, and suffered as a result.
Now it's back, completely free, and redesigned as Evolve Stage 2.
And that's... interesting.

Going free to play on PC for Evolve has surely increased its player base, and it should have been f2p since the beginning, since with all those dlc it was just like the other f2p games, i just wonder if any other AAA publisher is going to follow Turtlerocks footsteps, i have to admit that i am playing Evolve right now and it was a great move that they made
Its future success lives or dies based on how Turtle Rock treats the player base.
It may seem popular now, but it's more of a curious experimentation to see how it plays from people who either never bought it but wanted to try it, and the small portion of the previous community that signed up just because people are playing it at all.
there are plenty of F2P that are dead with noone playing them and this could easily end up that way too.
I think they got better kick with players by releasing it first for pay, then as free to play. Players always think that original games were good because of its price, and some of them have been googling it for some time wanting to get in, but not being able because of the price.
The problem with Evolve's previous state wasn't Turtle Rock's fault. That blame belongs at the feet of 2k Studios. When Evolve came out, the game would be $60 BUT the maps would be free and I believe you could earn characters, monsters, and skins in game OR pay for them for a reasonable price. 2K got wind of this, gave a nice big nope and figured they needed to charge extra for the characters, monsters and skins to make profit. They couldn't actually fight it since 2K was the distributor and most likely funded a lot of the game.
***** It is a definite improvement, no doubt. However I did read that the founders got even more screwed over than Jim says. On top of cut game modes, Evolve Stage 2 also cut out a lot of the harder unlockables and some of the perks some of the hardcore players spent hundreds of hours working towards. From what veterans have said, this includes elite hunter skins, and several perks that were removed for balancing reasons and thr new gameplay additions.
It explains most of the harsher criticism in the reviews.

I think the change to make it 'fast paced' kind of ruined it. Part of the fun of the game was hunting down the creature, trying to find it before it found you, constantly being on edge. They removed all that instead of trying to improve on that. The fact you know just know where the monster is was a total step in the wrong direction.
The boring part was that when you did get into combat the whole thing was just a massive bore cause the monster would just have a shit tonne of health and not really do much back to you so was just a grind of find it, trap it, whittle it down a bit, rinse and repeat loads and loads of times.

Had forgotten about Evolve. Called it's death before beta ended because the $80 price tag would limit the player base and result in terrible match making.

Well, the game has hard time keeping the player base above 800 players, on peak hours, on weekend.
matchmaking as result can take up to 15 minutes.
furthermore the insertion of micro-payments 3 weeks after the release split the fan-base.
on the other hand, it is published by 2k, the same ones who published evolve.
some of the community (myself included) now hope that battleborn will follow the f2p model.
One moderator of the BB community hub said in a discussion thread about BB following Evolve:
"Such decisions aren't usually made fast. They will have to see how Evolve does with its F2P model. There aren't even any microtransactions for Evolve Stage 2 right now. Everything is in the beta."
Eh frankly the only reason I'm even still interested in BB are the really funny characters and... that's it really. I haven't picked up the game in a good long while and from what I've been hearing, it's probably best I just sell it back to Gamestop unless the new DLC characters/other things can make a change.

No they don't! Evolve was unique in that way: It was designed from the start to be cram-packed with DLCs, in addition to the $60 or whatever that they charged at launch and, I believe, for some time thereafter. For a little game about four players chasing a fifth player in a sort of Left 4 Dead vs. mode re-imagining. With some admittedly cool-seeming monsters. They just went "We're going to put out so much DLC for this game, you guys, we're designing it that way, with additional paid content in mind, from the ground up! =D"
And yet, for some reason, I can no longer even find it on the Steam store... Gee, I wonder why that could be? =o

Evolve and Battlefront sold themselves as "services", with half a game and a promise for the future (which actually, SFV is keeping pretty damn well, props to Capcom for once), and you can talk how shit they are and how it's not going to work, yet there is this little game, made by a little company called Blizzard, that is the best selling game of the year, that everybody loves and talks about, that did the exact same thing an nobody even tried to complain xD

Overwatch is actually really good, and has enough variety in its classes to keep things interesting for longer than Evolve did.
Overwatch was not pushing season passes and DLC out before gameplay.
Overwatch's "service" isn't bullshit like EA's and 2K's were.

I actually *did* complain about some of Overwatch's business practices, so let's not claim I played favorites there.
Evolve's model DIDN'T work. You talk as if I'm wrong for saying Evolve's model wouldn't work but... it didn't. I was right. Overwatch's success does not make me wrong about Evolve, because I am literally factually correct about Evolve.
What exactly was counterargued by Overwatch's existence? Nothing, as far as I can see. Everything I said was backed up by reality.
Evolve was actually really fun though. Regardless of how much content there was, it was a fun game.
It was okay.
That's largely because Blizzard has a reputation for delivering, or at least providing substantial content.
While Capcom has been flowing down a rocky service for a while, and Turtle Rock was pretty "new" to the game, minus previously having the support of Valve.
So skepticism is due in certain cases more than others.
Blizzard also tends to be decent in terms of transparency to boot.
Evolve was a better premise than the final product ended up being.
For anyone that sorts comments by date: The answer was no.
But you already knew that if you're industry aware and/or watching these in descending order.
As a Founder who bought the Monster Pack at launch, I've been provided with an absolutely HUGE amount of content. The 3000 keys thing was just sort of a small icing on the cake I didn't even need to spend, everything -- and I mean everything -- was already unlocked for me. That's like the "Perfect Package" in a Free To Play shop game.
Well, speaking as a Founder, I can tell you that about two days ago when Turtle Rock released a new patch, we were given 27 thousand Keys for free. Yes, 27.000 Keys. For free. That to me proves that Turtle Rock are serious about giving Founders rewards for our investment in the future.
I might be naive, but that's what I think.

It curently has 44k players, in just 4 DAYS. That is something, f2p was a good choice :)

People only left due to how slow the game took to fucking play when on the hunter team, and how many people pissed on the DLC.

Watching this post Evolve's death is really sad. I hadn't even hardly looked at the game before it went free to play, but then i gave it a try and found out it had a surprising ammount of charm and effort behind it. It's a damn shame, it could have grown into something truly special.
As always, Angry Joe's review was dead on the money. As was it's inclusion into his ''worst games of 2015'' list tbh.

Some Anon Joe tore Evolve apart for over all value. The game was meh' but the price was unacceptable hence his rage. Jim is saying its a okay game with the now present hindsight of it being a F2P game.
Joe also made money monetising a tribute video to a guy he only met 2 or 3 times and denied it once he got found out. He's got a history of either treating people like shit or just using them to futher his own career.

overwatch is not in the state to do it. It sells very well. People do play it

It works for Overwatch because they have players, Battleborn NEEDS players and going f2p is the only way they're ever going to compete with Overwatch.
It shouldn't need to compete from start since its not the same kind of game. But people still think its a "copy of Overwatch" even after playing it, so fuck it.

I'm one of those "founders" and I think they game a little too small in-game gift to us but overall it makes me VERY happy to see the update. I understand some of you may feel cheated but really it's overall better this way as this will at least keep from dying almost today(or something, I haven't looked up any statistics but I know it went very downhill). I'm happy to once again be able to play evolve against other players and the game is improved. No complaints from me, I'm just thankful :3

I am happy for TRS. There is a near endless amount of depth to Evolve. From team comps, to where, when, how you dome, to the unpredictable monster and player controlling it. No multiplayer game has captured my attention like this since L4D, and I am happy that others can enjoy some of the most intense nail biting moments in online gaming. Providing you are willing to actually spend time learning how to play the game of course.

When I heard 3,000 keys - I was thinking 3,000 of TF2/CS:GO type keys and I thought that was a pretty good deal.
Could somebody explain what is up with the crazy popularity of Pokemon go? Did i miss something? No, i don't hate the game, i just thought it was nothing special. But even Jim sterling is playing it. Could someone help?

I'm trying to think of some answers, but it's a bit difficult to see the appeal, personally. If I was to take a stab in the dark, I'd say:
1) It's Pokemon and Pokemon fanboys will consume anything Pokemon related.
2) It's free, so I guess a lot of people are just throwing themselves into it because there's nothing to lose.
3) Addictive...? It's a simple concept that any idiot can grasp. Just walk somewhere and throw a Pokeball at a Pokemon. Level it up, catch rarer Pokemon, and you can brag to everyone else.
4) It has microtransactions that encourages longer play sessions. And once you put money into something, you start to become more hesitant at avoiding it.
5) People are on their phones 24/7 anyway, so Pokemon GO slips in nicely as simply another addition into one's everyday routine of staring at your phone.
6) Everyone and their mother's are playing it, so I guess there's bound to be a few people hopping on the "look, I'm hip, too" bandwagon by also playing it and sharing their experience.

It's a pokemon game so it's a popular thing by nature at this point. For many people it's something they've wanted for ages. It might lose it's novelty but as of now, it's Pokemon, it's a new concept for large part of the playerbase. And a lot of people are playing it so more people want to try it.

I'd rather pay for Titanfall 2 than go to a FTP Evolve..
Titanfall 2 is another example of devs going "We fucked up the first time, so we're going to give you want you complained about." And we have a campaign and mechs with swords now.
+David Reding A lot of complaints were made at Titanfall for lacking content for $60 and looks like they listened to the complaints as well for the sequel, although I could take or leave the automated robot.
Luckily for me I think I got my moneys worth and then then some. I paid 80$ for the deluxe after playing the beta and with 500+ hours I still get on all the time.
I know most people didn't enjoy it too long but nearly everyone who did play it agreed the core gameplay was great and most importantly *fun*.
It was just lacking the content they wanted. For me that core great gameplay was all I needed to keep playing(which was a great surprise to me as I'm usually more a single player guy), and on PC at least there's still a pretty decent size playerbase.
For me with TF2 they could fuck up the campaign again and as long as that amazing core multiplayer was back and upgraded I'll be a happy camper. :D
Titanfall is actually really good. I love the game.
If they have the smart gun in Titanfall 2 then no way in hell I will play that game.

As a founder player I'm really happy with the changes. I played a couple games before work and was more enthusiastic for the changes than I was for the game at launch. The loot system is such that if I want an upgrade or skin I just play the game, not pray to RNGesus *Coughoverwatchcough*
Add that to the fact that you get about 750SK per game if you do well and you'll not wait long.

I've been saying games with a multiplayer focus should go Free to Play once they start to die out for awhile now! Once the game is only going for $10 or less then is there really any point in not just creating a F2P version and reinvigorating the player base?
It depends on how the condition fare. Not all dev are Valve. Valve not only said: "Alright lads, here's a game that's free!"they created mann store, updates, a lot of hats and taunts.
I think a game should still be at a reasonable price of below what "Triple-A" boasted about.
In the case TRS, they don't have that space for it. And their neither Blizzard, where money is simply made more than they can chew.

While I agree that they should be thankful they have increased numbers to play with I think founders should have gotten more than this. I also think free to players should have gotten less. Sorry but the founders put quite a bit of money into the game and supported Turtle Rock and they should be rewarded better for it. Btw I am not a founder.
I can understand their feelings, and if I had been dumb enough to spend all that money, I'd be upset too because, well, I didn't get anything in the end that other people get for free.
But like I said, if you're dumb enough to spend all that money supporting that bullshit business model in the first place, I have little sympathy. And I'm saying this as someone who was really hyped for evolved before that disastrous release.

The people complaining about going free to play is a little silly. I get that you paid money for the base game when it was released, but wouldn't it be better to have a player base that actually, you know, keeps the game alive? What good is the game when you have no player base, in a multiplayer based concept?

I've been playing evolve recently since t went free to play, I had the good foresight not to buy it after playing the beta. But even in a F2P format it still feels greedy even though aren't even micro-transactions yet! Its such a grind to unlock stuff and the game gets stale so fast because everyone has to use the same characters over and over.
Use the same characters over and over? That is the point, if you think it is boring then don't play it. And grinding yea but it gives you something to fucking do.
Overwatch: Use the same characters and grinding for cases or buy what you want
TF2: Use the same characters and grinding for drops or just buy what you want

Except there are nine classes in tf2 with a bunch of different weapon combos and overwatch has 21 heroes, and both of these games have all those characters available from the beginning where as Evolve only gives you 4 hunters (one for each role) and one monster. It's pretty obvious that things start getting repetitive a bit quicker than the other two games man.

doesn't make it less grindy to compare it with other grindy games. Overwatch grind luckily only locks skins and crap I don't care about (like golden guns) behind a grind wall. It's not the same as they aren't locking game mechanics behind it. TF on the other hand is the same, one of the main reason I left that crap was the grind and the full inventory I had all the time.

This is why I absolutely love looking at games and peoples thoughts in retrospect and compairing them to how they've gone ahead and changed a lot of wrongs just to bring life back into the project which shows true dedication and passion that they have. This sort of work is great to hear about, especially after you see and hear all the bullshit with all of these other "titans" in the AAA market. *Cough*KONAMI*Cough*

There's a patch today for Evolve that's giving all the Founders another 27K keys, literally increasing the amount they get tenfold in addition to all the other changes.
The new version of the game is amazing. I'm really enjoying playing it.
Something else I've noticed with the given video is that its far brighter and more colorful than the original Evolve game, something that helps to further offset Evolve from the original and other games like it.

evolve had a Peak Player count of 234 before going f2p and then gained 50000 players when f2p and now is down at 10k peak players with average of 5.5k players, rose like a phoenix only to plummet face first back into its tombstone
