Mighty No. 9: The Full Development Story | The Art of Failure

  • Mighty No. 9 is a video game that was crowdfunded via Kickstarter in 2013 and was released in 2016, and is considered one of the biggest disappointments in gaming from the past decade. However, Mighty No. 9's flaws came during development, and so today, instead of bashing Kickstarter, Mighty No. 9 itself, or its mastermind Keiji Inafune, we're going to use research, analysis, and interviews with some of those involved to get the full development story of Mighty No. 9. This is The Art of Failure.

    If they never promised the 3DS version or the online mode, the game would've come out sooner, and better made.

      They were too ambitious with their goals. Should've just offered a PC/PS4/PS3 download and if the game sold well enough, port it to WiiU and maybe make a spin-off game for the 3DS later instead

      @@uwechipuazo739 Their problem was that they couldn't say no. the backers from the start demanded ports to everything from PS3 to the TI-86, saying they'd cancel their pledge if their demands were not met.
      The game should have released on PC as planned originally, just PC, no linux, no mac. Fans demanded the moon and comcept didn't say no.

    Having played through Mighty No 9 in 2019 for the sake of it and since it was at a discount, the game's problems go beyond the mismanagement from Inafune-san. You can tell that the game's level design is a reflection from the 80's run and gun platformers. It wasn't learning from the issues of the past: it was done with those philosophies in mind.
    As much as I respect Mega Man II, I don't think the game holds up. These days, these games have to be balanced with and without the abilities from the Robot Masters and Mavericks. There's nothing wrong in making a difficult game, but it's not great when you almost need that trial and error system and you negate it with the ability to set the starting life count at 9 in the Options Menu.
    After playing Mega Man X, it became even more clear that Mighty No 9 was not just bad. It was, in my opinion, a regression in game design and that's not good enough. And I'm sure some of these decisions couldn't be adressed by Inti Creates.
    Considering how good Shovel Knight turned out to be with two solo campaigns before Mighty No 9 could even ship, it just shows that the right minds have to be at the right place.
    A bad licensed game is bad and we can laugh at it (Rambo). A game built on lies that turns out to be an insult to its series is shameful (Colonial Marines). A crowdfunded, mismanaged game for a specific audience, from a once-respected character artist, is depressing.

    Dude, I just spent over and hour watching/listening to your Art of Failure eps, and I was super engrossed and assumed this was a majorly large TH-cam channel and this surely had several 100,000 views. Then I saw the views and, while a nice amount for a normal YTer, your channel deserves WAY MORE recognition!!!
    You have such a professional and polished style and I really think you have a knack for the documentary genre, keeping it both engrossing and fair.
    Immediately subbed and looking forward to more of this series in the future! I enjoyed watching some of your other vids too, which I checked out afterwards.

    Similar to Sonic Boom, I think if they just solely began with the PC build of the title and promised ports in the future; the situations would have been absolutely different. Mighty No. 9 could have actually been a good title. I love the quality of your videos, by the way. Your documentary style videos are extremely well done!

    03:00 That is a picture of a businessman named Akira Kitamura, but it's not confirmed to be the one behind Mega Man. The only confirmed photo of him is a picture from the 80's found in The Untold History of Japanese Game Developers: Volume 1.

    Inti Creates has never been good with Unreal. All their Gal*Gun games run on the same engine as MN9 and are poorly optimized, eating up more resources than a cel-shaded on-rails shooter has any right to... I wish Mighty No. 9 would've used Inti's 2D engine and instead gone for HD sprites in the style of Shantae.

    Keiji Inafune should had never left Capcom, he was at the top of the company so he could had hired some young talented designers to carry on the Mega Man Legacy, instead he left the company and had Capcom killed the Mega Man franchise. Not a wise decision at all, then every project he wanted to make failed or disappoint not becoming even better than the western games he hope to dethrone. To this day the 3DS and PS Vita versions of Mighty No. 9 still doesn't exist. Not sure why it's so difficult for them to make a 3DS version, just make it similar to the other version but instead of 3D make it sprite based 32-Bit style like Mega Man ZX.

      Capcom almost killed mega man, because in 2018 we got Mega Man 11 & the Mega Man X Legacy Collection. We did get some new legacy collections too. The Capcom town Super elections votes are closed, so now we need to wait for remakes of Mega Man 1 2 & 3 to win the super elections, but they are taking so fucking ling to announce the results.

    16:50 Ben Judd was forced out of Capcom after this disaster that was Bionic Commando 2009. It sold only 100K copies, and cost 20-40 million dollars. It's the biggest bomb in Capcom history. Judd was producer, and inafune-san okayed the project. This was the main reason both were forced out of Capcom.

      @@StuffWePlay Of course Judd is gonna spin this. He's not gonna admit "I spearheaded the biggest bomb in Capcom's history. A game that no one even wanted, and I was accused of looking at Bionic Commando through the lens of a fanboy rather than a businessman". The explanation he gives for leaving Capcom is super weak and doesn't make any sense. Of course it was due to Bionic Commando! Capcom forced both Judd and Inafune out of the company over that game and the other outsourced games.

      Japan doesn't fire people. They do things to get them to quit. And it's absurd to think a guy ends up spearheading a project that is literally the biggest bomb in Capcom's history, one so big the President of Capcom stepped in and said no more to outsourcing, just left for unrelated reasons. I never got why Inafune left Capcom. Then I did the research into the outsourcing, and how all the games he outsourced either were disapointments, or outright bombs. Then it made sense. What they did with Inafune is classic Japanese way to get a guy to quit. Promote him to a job and give him way too much work and responsibility, and constntly attack him. Make his life hell and force him to quit. @@StuffWePlay

    There's a few things that were left out of this video that ought to be addressed.
    The Mighty No. 9 cartoon, while announced by Inafune, wasn't something that inafune made happen. the Mighty No. 9 kickstarter was making headlines everywhere and was a hot topic at the time. An animation studio approached Inafune saying they wanted to make a cartoon about Mighty No. 9, and of course Inafune agreed.
    There was a lot of misunderstanding about this part of the kickstarter. People thought the kickstarter money was going towards the cartoon, and a lot thought when he asked for more money, it was because of the cartoon. This confusion though lies entirely at the feet of 8-1 ltd and comcept for being unclear with information. 8-4 ltd was in charge of everything english facing regarding the kickstarter and is also responsible for a lot of negativity later on in the Mighty No. 9 backer forums, as well as the substandard english translations for the game.
    Second, something that should be noted, is that the game was originally planned to just be PC. all the ports were added after massive backer outrage in the kickstarter comment section. People basically were demanding that it be released for their console of choice, lest they recind their pledge. Comcept still messed up with the price points for porting and by putting in the stretch goals in the first place.
    third, no mention of 8-4 ltd in the video, who played a massive part in the kickstarter. They were in charge of communication between comcept and fans. a lot of misinformation could be placed on their shoulders. They were also the source of controversy when the backer forums opened up for game feedback. they became hostile towards backers and banned many backers. They were also involved in the controvery about making beck a female, which led to inafune giving the woman at the center of it some flowers and thanked her for her work as she left the project. 8-4 ltd soured relationships with backers, and Comcept faced their anger.
    8-4 ltd was probably more damaging to MN9 than deep silver with their infamous promotional video. No one that talks about MN9 ever mentions them though, nor the part they played in it all.

    Launching the second kickstarter campaign for a completely different game on top of Mighty Number 9 not just being mediocre but still in development more than anything else is what destroyed his reputation.
    It was seen as him jumping from a sinking ship at best, or him having shiny ball syndrome and being unable to finish what he started. That was a real wtf were you thinking moment...

    I think that Game had the potential be a successful game but due to mismanagement, the identity crisis, communication problems, game development issues and others, it failed.

    A 2D graphic style would have been better , specially with INTI creates on board (megaman zero saga, azure striker Gunvolt, etc) , on the other hand they were too ambitious with the goals.

    They should make an 8 bit game with Beck. I don't want the character to go away forever. Bloodstained's 8 bit games are great, so do the same with Mighty # 9

      They already did, it's called Mighty Gunvolt. It got a sequel that added in stuff from Gal Gun. Ironically, everything Beck's been in except his own game has been at least decent.

    Heh, now I know - I personally didn't back the project but I had a friend who did and he was... a bit salty about the result, unsurprisingly. I wasn't about to ask him how things went wrong because, well, it was evidently very personal - so it's nice to have a video like this explain the whole backstory in a calm manner.

    Just a friendly tip, try to look more comfortable when talking to the camera. Keep yourself centered and tone down the hand gestures. Maybe sitting down will help.

    Fans wanted Inafune and his team to make a game that would of been a worthy spiritual successor to Mega Man, and yet he wanted to make the next big media empire like Pokémon or Spongebob Squarepants!?
    Even after Mighty No. 9's disastrous realease, Inafune has since admitted that all the problems that happened behind the scenes was his fault. He has yet to recover from the Mighty No.9 incident, but these scars of the fans who were disappointed would not be forgotten for years to come.
    And Capcom had the last laugh after that would be Mighty No.9 media empire fell hard, crashed and burned by releasing Mega Man 11 after all these years.
    I don't think Inafune is a con man, he was misguided and was swallowed by his own hubris. The second he left Capcom, he was willing to make a name for himself and his desire to turn Mighty No. 9 - a Kickstarter he himself created- into something much more than just a simple spiritual successor to Mega Man. But I think we all know how that turned out.
    Anyway, your video gave me a better look behind the curtain of the making of Mighty No.9.
    So thanks for the info and keep up the good work on your videos!

      One thing that isn't mentioned in this video, an outside party approached comcept about making the cartoon. it had nothing really to do with comcept or inafune, and unfortunately that part isn't mentioned in this video.
      The MN9 kickstarter was making headlines, so people were chomping at the bits to get in on the action. Inafune announced it, but it really had nothing to do with him.

    Obviously, a game like this didn't need 10 SKUs for such a comically small budget, but even in a scenario where all 10 were planned from the beginning, there was zero reason why this game needed to be made on Unreal 3. The way Judd phrases it here implies that nobody at Comcept knew that Unreal not only wasn't properly compatible with 3DS and Vita, but it was barely optimized for PS3, Xbox 360, and especially Wii U. Plus, it's a sidescroller, it gains nothing from being made on Unreal 3.
    I feel like that's a decision made at the start of development that doesn't get criticized nearly enough in a lot of Mighty No. 9 retrospectives, because it was completely unnecessary and arguably caused more problems than it solved in its already disastrous development.

      While that in itself is worth covering in a video, this was more concerned with the development side of the development and less the actually Kickstarter management. Any mentions to Kickstarter updates were done in regards to the actual progress on the game's development

      I both agree and disagree here. All games are molded to a degree in part by everyone who works on them, from the lead programmer all the way down to testers, but the original idea for this particular game was created by Inafune :)

    48:07 - Got a source for this promise? I've heard mention of it numerous times but have yet to actually find it. The Kickstarter update only provided an estimate (and a weirdly worded one at that), and the articles I've found that mention such a promise don't provide a source.

      @@StuffWePlay I dug through all my old emails from back then, and all I could find was the email for the Kickstarter update. No promise that it would be released within a certain time frame, just a statement that they had resumed work on it in May, and an estimated release window that stayed true to form by not even being in the right year.

    Having the game come out exclusively for PS4/XB1/PC and stuck with single player and cut down on the backer stuff on kickstarter could've made the game a ton better, and they possibly would've had the funds to keep the hand-drawn art-style they promised in the first place.

      it would have come out for PS3 and 360. It really should have been a PC exclusive, and ported later if it did well. it probably wouldn't sell well on the 360 or PS3 as those markets aren't all that interested in mega man games as a whole. It would have done better on nintendo, but the wiiU was a disaster anyway.
      PC exclusive was the original intention, it grew from there because of backer outcry and comcept not saying no

    I'm sorry, but the demo was not well received. At best, it was just simply average or satisfactory, which is pretty much how the final game turned out. As a backer, I can tell you that many were concerned with how the game looked and played. However at that point, I think most of us were just happy that we got anything at all.
    I actually suspected that money would become an issue early on when I asked if we can give a very general budget outline on how the crowdfunding funds would be used for the project, and Nick Yu said it would be "impossible" to do so. Not sharing how the budget would be used came up again with the voice acting campaign, but this time they actually came back with a detailed summary in a later update. "Impossible" indeed!
    At any rate, thank you for the video. I'm always happy to see these videos pop up about MN9 that get into the details as to why it failed or why backers weren't satisfied with the game or project. Also if people thought that this was bad, you didn't even get into the community aspect of the project! The forums was a mess, there was a lack of substantial updates, terrible communication with backers, and also a lack of actual backer involvement. Yikes!

      You should realize that it wasn’t just one game. It was a unique series that was destroyed by nature of mankind’s true core, evil. I lived through this part of life as a secular, but when my eyes could fianlly see and hear, I just see monsters taking off their masks.
      The “fans” are no really different from the CEOs, because they have the same evil spirits.

      A lot of times the handheld version of a game is quite different from the full version, they could've done that for the 3DS.

    Red Ash was the one I was more saddened by. I still look forward to if it ever happens, but seeing that "future-society-with-high-tech-cyberpunk-ruins" setting again with that kind of art style I had to back it to at least get the Art Book. But since it didn't reach the goal I doubt I'll ever be getting that x_x I do hope to someday animate a 2D version of how a Mighty No. 9 level might've looked though o.o

    Damn shame that Mighty No 9 ended up in the state it did & that Deep Silver was being Deep Silver. (Which side note Deep Silver is more known for Dead Island. Saints Row was THQ & Deep Silver only bought Saints Row & Volition from THQ after they went bankrupt (which is probably the perfect topic for an Art of Failure episode) & was only responsible for Saints Row IV at that point which most work for was done under THQ) Interesting to think what the game could've been if they didn't or promise to release the game on so many devices, instead focusing on just pc first & current Gen Consoles later.

    Unfortunately Mighty No 9 had a lot of promise. But it was stretched way too thin with not enough of a budget. Even if they had been allotted the full $4 million, it still wouldn't have made things much smoother. Those portable consoles and multiplayer stretch goals made things more complicated. If they had just focused on PC and the most recent home consoles they could have made this game much better. Maybe we could have gotten this on the Vita or Switch down the line. But now it's too late. The game isn't unplayable or a complete dumpster fire, but it is mediocre at best.

      They could focus on PC first, then the HD systems and then 3Ds and PS vita afterward. The Wii U version could just had been move to the Switch which should solve the issue of glitches and bugs.

      That's exactly why they bring back Mega Man for MM11, they took Inafune failure and improve upon it. Before that they made a mobile game and allow a fan made game to be published.

      MM11 was originally set to come out the same month as MN9 before getting delayed again, so I think that’s exactly what Capcom was doing.

    I heard that they didn't have anyone on staff who was an experienced programmer who understood Unreal Engine. It was just the GUI interface is all they really knew. Friends of friends were hired rather than actual experts. Is this true?

    Takes a ton of delays to make a successor to a formula from the 80s despite Inafune having a lot of experience and these games being pretty darn short.
    Can we agree the direction was awful on this project?

      No. The delays were caused because of aggressive demands of ports and annoying technical issues that brought down a realistic and small project with some heart to it, into a complete management disaster. But the core of it all is that all humans are evil and have no remorse for their evil. Disgusting creations. Born as viruses.

    Inafune became boss of 3 companies yet needed crowdfund to make the a game. I had heard he was creator of megaman yet its opposite and that he had left capcom because they destroyed megaman or didnt want to make more so he made spiritual succesor which to me didnt seem that way. Looks more like he destroyed megaman himself. Megaman legends i like the gameplay and feel but it wasnt megaman game it had none of the lore of originals i didnt know till now. I also think crowfunds dont show much promise for games might work for indies but even this 2.5 d is too much it seems i heard it even ran terrible so it wasnt optimised properly. Megaman legends ruined the possibilty of megaman going to 3d by ruining the story and not adopting nothing except megaman the avatar. They new megaman wasnt going to last long after the lore from the platformrr didnt line up thats why probably megaman legends 3 wasnt made despite it supposedly selling good people wanted the normal bosses and finding their weakness i thought megaman legends was going to be that way i was excited the comercials for it never were misleading and you only found out after buying or renting the game. To this day i think how much better legends woulve been with real bosses like in original and voice acting and lore but they lost chance.
