When Diablo Immortal came up in the video, I have to admit my first thought was "That was still this year? Fuck me"
I literally had to look it up because I was convinced it was last year but no apparently time just doesn't get to exist normally in the video game industry.
Time lost all meaning somewhere around mid 2020.

To be fair that's possibly because most of us stopped thinking about that thing in late 2018, shortly after the infamous announcement, except to clown on in meme form, which continues to this day. So, as far as most are concerned, that game is effectively ~4 years old.
what i love most about steph clowning on gilson b pontes is that they are probably the only person in the world who buys his games. and he STILL gets really pissy at them
Yeah you just can not convince me that any single person actually enjoys them other than laughing at how shit they are and I guarantee the vast majority of those morbidly curious people only find them through Steph.
They're literally Gilsons main advertiser.
There must be a huge plot or conspiracy behind why Sony keeps publishing those games.
I think Caddicarus mentioned some of Gilson's games in one of his videos, but probably no one was as commited as James Stephanie Sterling. They're basically a Gilson fan at this point

I'll be honest, I unsubbed cos I feel like Jim's become a bit too hateful. Its they're opinion for sure, but the putdowns on Scorn and Callisto Protocal and Sonic Frontiers felt unnecessarily vicious to me even as someone who doesn't particularly like thoss games. They're opinion is always valid, but I found its less necessary and more of a chore to listen to as time went on and I unsubbed as a result.
The year just isn't over until we get Skeletor announcing the 10 worst videogames

I still laugh every time I hear this title. Ashigaru is the word for the lowest level conscripted soldiers in feudal Japan, while Shogun is a title only upper-class lords could gain through conquest. One cannot be the other, and the latter was never found on any battlefield.
This is why the game is so hard.
You are a mere Ashigaru, standing up against an army of shoguns that can kill you with a single hit.

It's truly a master class in, uh, ludonarrative convergence, gameplay story integration, universal game design, and other words like that.

I had a premonition and I'm sad to say I was right I love her game reviews but GD she's missing the mark on this one.
Frontiers isn't empty more like spread out and that's GREAT because no one wants to be crashing into enemies everytime you build up speed this game gives you room to run(Sonics entire gimmick) and it feels wonderful.

Steph I finally did it. It took a year off telling myself to call the doctors and get on hrt and I finally did it. Two months in and I feel much nicer, mentally. There’s still a mess in my head but at least dysphoria isn’t happening as much.
I just wanted to say thank you for giving me that push and that I finally made good on the promise I left on a video forever ago.

Pretty much how I feel about Genshin Impact too. I will never get the people defending it; it being a decent game underneath the hood does not excuse shitty monetization practices that target the neurodivergent and addictive.

Oh god, same. Like, I can get the appeal, I've played it a bit, it's pretty fun, taking the existing format of BoTW and adding it's own flavour, the character design is pretty alright (danbooru certainly seems to think so anyway), I like the music. It's just that, UUUUGH, THEY RUIN ALL OF THAT PROMISE BY SMEARING GAMBLING ALL OVER IT.
Like granted I've gotten a decent way in without paying at all, but that's because I'm not the target of this manipulative carcinogen. And even then it just makes a game objectively worse, it'd be more rewarding and a better incentive to play the game if they made characters and the like unlockable through gameplay, it wouldn't be that hard to incorporate when every playable character has a quest chain, they could just go "thanks, if you need a hand I'll gladly help" and boom you've unlocked the character. If they took out the monetisation and just charged a flat £50-60 I'd be way happier with the game and would gladly call it a fun time. But no, they have to make it objectively worse through gambling. I just can't recommend a game that does this shit, I'm somewhat willing to tolerate one offs like the latest Monster Hunter's DLC (although frankly I'd say there's too much of it) but the moment they combine it with gambling I just can't abide it.

It's not a fantastic game by any means, but if your gacha, let alone actually paid game isn't at least as basically sound as Genshin, then what the actual hell are you doing?
@@aprinnyonbreak1290 I played a pretty good Pokémon ripoff call something like Monster Storm that wasn't too bad. Paying money just made the game easier. Getting free premium currency in-game was a bit tedious, but also completely unnecessary. I still hate gatcha games though.

As someone who joined mid-transition, and has never known anything different, I do NOT get the issue- either your gaming content is appreciable or it isn't, and I'm progressive enough to be worried about the direction of gaming, with companies eating companies in gleeful abandon, and devs treated like crap. It's refreshing to actually see a reviewer actually address these issues. Keep rocking on
As a long-time Sterling fan, I applaud your good taste and sound reasoning. If more people had those qualities, the world would be a much improved place... and if I have any hope for the future, it's that coming generations will find their way to those qualities better than past ones did. =)
I just wanted to add that I’ve been a fan since before the transition and I still don’t understand what the big deal is. They’re still the same person as they were before the transition, the content and delivery hasn’t changed and I still enjoy the videos. The effort of getting used to the transitioned Steph was no more difficult than when a shop chain rebrands. Trivial effort.
Also a pre-transition viewer for years. The content never changed, only the outfits.

Dying light making parkour limited by an arbritary bar is a bad idea for exactly the same reasons as the last Contra making shooting limited on a bar

The devs were probably like this "hey some of the bestselling games have stamina bar, we should have one too regardless of whether it makes sense or not, or how it affects the game experience."
Agreed. It’s a similar case to how Mirror’s Edge Catalyst really wanted to be Dying Light 1 by forcing the player to upgrade skills they otherwise could already do just fine in the first game. I liked Dying Light 2, but I can’t defend it because the first game is better: it didn’t have a stamina metre for climbing, an irritating time limit when exploring at night nor restricted the combat to crappy melee only: you could use guns if you wanted but out in the open it would be suicide until you unlocked a silencer. It also didn’t require a cheat sheet in order to work out how to get the best ending and how to survive the final boss even if Dying Light 1’s final boss was a boring quick time event.

I'm currently playing through Frontiers and I'm genuinely enjoying it, but I'm not gonna get mad over it getting a scathing review lmao. Idk why it's so hard for people to just accept it lmao
I think in my case the enjoyment comes in part from not having spent time on other open worlds, enjoying the story progression and generally being willing to look past Sonic games being experimental and... Weird at times, never sticking to a style or just doing what that kind of character is made for. I can definitely see why many would hate it though.

The Callisto Protocol while terrible, has a silver lining. It was the game that FINALLY taught me a lesson about preordering games. I though to myself “It’s made by the original creator, how could they possibly mess up an already perfect combat formula?” Well they did, they absolutely did. Wait for release.

I tried playing Diablo immortal and actually considered burning my phone after 2 months of constant ads even after uninstalling the thing in 1 week of trudging through it.
The sad thing is the Calisto protocol had so much potential to be amazing

I'm one of those that has un-subbed from his channel and thought I'd check it out today to see if he is still pushing extremist politics. Can you explain in what way a smaller subscriber base can be "better"? The point of a subscriber is to watch the creators content. The creator creates content for his subscribers to watch. That number going down is the sound of a channels regression and an objectively bad job at managing his channel by the creator.
I imagine your comment hints at the fact that you consider yourself morally superior to those who un-subbed because you agree with the extremist message. All I can say is that extremist politics combined with an unearned sense of moral superiority is not a good combo to take on life with.

Damn! As Diablo immoral came up, because you put the OG Diablo 1 Tristram theme as the Soundtrack, it really brought back my feelings of dissapointment and sadness about the Franchise, blizzard and probably a lot of modern gaming compared to the hopes I had for it .
While I understand the potential impact Microsoft buying Activision Blizzard would have on the market, part of me hopes it will get past the FCC for two reasons:
1. The government is being hypocritical, letting other big mergers like WB Discovery get by scot free
2. Microsoft promised to get rid of Robert Kotick and would likely clean up Activision Blizzard's abusive workplace culture because they actually give a damn about their image as a corporation (even if they wouldn't fix the exploitative monetization practices because these are the people who added a subscription to f*cking Solitaire).

Another thing that blew me away with Babylons Fall was the NieR collab, The location was the exact same hallways but tinted blue, The rewards were just gear taken straight from Final Fantasy XIV and not even renamed either.
And it didn't even last a year, which is a tragedy for Platinum.
Saddest thing is that they're going to bring another live service games.

@@Gogo32monkey They're being hired to make them, they're doing them out of necessity to stay afloat rather than any real passion for live services. All their character action games are excellent, but also pretty damn niche.
A ton of their games have been commercial flops despite being beloved by fans and critics alike, and if it wasn't for Nier Automata and Astral Chain they would've gone bankrupt.
Unfortunately it's not really up to them to decide what type of games they make.

It's just how it goes- what makes you the stupid amounts of money these days that allows for more financial stability is a solidly performing long-lived gacha-game, so I'm afraid we're gonna see Platinum keep chasing that whale....
Quite some time ago, I seem to remember you talking about an indie game called Valley and you were talking about how the way that the game has you use speed and momentum to solve challenges made you wish that the Sonic team would have their eyes on it. For some reason, I think about that a lot any time I see a new Sonic game.

I really liked Sonic Frontiers honestly. I do see a lot of it's flaws and hope if they do it again they make it a meatier, more fleshed out experiment but I quite enjoyed it!
That said, Steph's opinions are totally valid and I hope SEGA use the criticisms to help future releases.
Callisto Protocol being bad is hilarious, I was so excited but too poor to buy it when it came out and I'm so glad I had no money at that time 💀
It's funny as I bought both games they both have some flaws but are not that bad games once you get the hang of playing them like most games. TCP was basically being judged by most as this is what you did after making DS or you did this in DS why isn't it here. Then when they get that negative mindset they start point out flaws in TCP saying this is bad when said flaws like that are in DS 1-3 that was overlooked in DS, well some of them at least.
@@yamadiyoo9658 Its mainly because when Dead Space had those flaws, they were either not really flaws because the way they executed those things made sense, or they were relatively minor and forgivable because the rest of the game was just that good. Callisto Protocol gets shit for those flaws because it doesn't have the solid game to distract from them. If Callisto Protocol wants the same leniency Dead Space gets, it needs to also be as good of a game as Dead Space, which its not.

Um...but Dying Light 1 HAD a stamina bar, that depleted when you climbed and did other things, including swinging a weapon and the like. It was just one of the final upgrades in one of the trees made it unlimited. Honestly, not just how she missed that one honestly.
DL1's stamina bar didn't apply to climbing or parkouring. DL2's stamina bar drains when climbing or even simply hanging which is stupid and definitely a step backwards.

I really wasn't expecting Sonic Frontiers
JSS gave it a 1.8 out of 10 on their website. I have no idea how they ended up hating it so much when the game is widely considered decent at worst, but that's what happened.
