    Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his Hype?
    No, says the Jimquisition man. It belongs to Chungus.
    Well, I rejected this answer. I chose the impossible; I chose Reddit.

      A website where the shitposter would not fear the ban. Where the conspiracy theorist would not be bound by petty common sense. Where the hyped would not be constrained by the rational. And with the sweat of your Hype, Reddit can become your home website as well.

      that's why I like this game, it's pretty much just peaceful, the loneliness of space is pretty well simulated here, I remember going to a star system, and I stayed there for 3 days, exploring and mining, Because each planet was different, thats why I liked it

    • @KitsyX
      @KitsyX 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Hypnotic Synopsis I'm afraid I haven't kept totally up to date with all this, but, out of curiosity, what did they actually lie about? I wasn't aware of any actual lies, just that it wasn't as good as people thought it would be.

    • @BlackDynamite641
      @BlackDynamite641 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      KitsyX The devs said in multiplayer interviews that the game was going to have multiplayer. They said that you could fly around with friends. There was pvp and trading. They just said that it would be extremely hard to find one another. 2 streamers went to the same location and couldn't see each other. The game's case even says that it has multiplayer.

    • @BlackDynamite641

      that was some hard earned allowance money (or maybe not so hard earned, whatever). Who dares to tell them that they should possibly think about not buying into the dishonest press for next month's overhyped indie. They have no sense of money management or better judgement of what's objectively wrong with a game title. They put on such a show to prove to others that they weren't just given the money without any work. So they overcompensate by chopping the heads off of people who do feel genuine disappointment cause they legitimately earned that money. Regardless of, however small, you might think 60$ is in the grand scheme of things.

    • @tahunuva4254
      @tahunuva4254 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Now, to be fair, not all indies are overhyped. In fact, quite the opposite: many, many excellent games are left unplayed because the dev didn't/couldn't advertise it enough.

  • @crystalsoulslayer

    For everyone's reference: this is the exact same phenomenon that lots of other industries use on the regular. It's a tactic that I think is called "identity marketing," which basically involves telling your prospective customers that you're selling them more than a product or a piece of tech. It's a statement about who they are as a person -- they're a gamer, an Apple user, an Intel or AMD owner, a BMW or Audi or Mercedes or Subaru driver, a member of a gym or health club... it goes on and on and on.
    Essentially, the tactic boils down to telling people that "When you buy this, you make it part of who you are." And therefore, when anyone questions, criticizes, insults, or even says something not explicitly positive about the thing, people vulnerable to this exploitative anti-consumerist bullshit feel attacked themselves. Because who gives a fuck about human beings when there's money involved?

      Well... to be fair, in places like the US, this is already absolutely a reality for very, very many people. Hell, it even extends not just to brands and products, but also to things like opinions - because this whole "BUT MUH IDENTITEH!" thing works just all too damn well on a country that's basically in a cultural and societal midlife crisis and in the process of realizing that a lot of its ideas and ideals are archaic and its citizens ill-treated (read, America).

    JIM!!
    MINI BOGLINS WTF!?
    OH
    MY
    GOD!
    Jim, I always admired you when you brought the Boglin thing to Jimquisition. I'm a 90's kid myself and I've been asking around if any of my childhood friends remembered the Mini Boglins or the big ones. None of them do.
    I have plenty of memories playing and collecting them with a good friend of mine but it seems that they were still kinda unknown thing where I lived (Finland), certainly no one had a real name for them. I remember calling them "Snotlings" or just "Goblins".
    Later in life I found out their name and remembered that I had a big bag of the mini Boglins stored for memories.
    I find it very exhilarating that you bring them up and that one person seems to share my childlike enthusiasm for creepy crawlies, all the things that made Boglins and similar toys cool.
    Thanks for bringing those good childhood memories back. I feel that after this Jimquisition this comment section could use some positivity. Please keep us updated on that new Boglin line, interesting stuff.
    (Also; I'm thinking about sending you my collection of mini Boglins if you'd be interested. Hope you'll see this comment.)
    Thank god for Jim.

      Oh man, can I just echo that? I was obsessed with Boglins growing up in Ireland. I wrote essays about them for school, which baffled the teacher when the essay was supposed to be about what it was like to be a Hebrew slave in Egypt or something.
      I remember seeing the boglins in their cage like boxes on a ferry to wales and knowing that I HAD TO HAVE ONE. I eventually managed to get one, a glow in the dark one. And I had a baby boglin too, the one that came in the egg. I loved him. And I think I also had a sort of more solid one with a spikey sort of back? I think his eyes popped out or something when you squeezed him.
      But what I remember most clearly was saving my "wages" as an altar boy (you got 20p a week from the older priest but if the nicer curate was there he'd give you 50p!) and from weeding the drive or mowing the lawn to slowly, over the course of weeks, save up the money to buy the box of 20 mini boglins that I saw in the toy shop in town. It was battered, old and probably had sat there forever unloved but I fucking loved those little goofy bastards.
      From mini-boglins, to Monsters in my Pocket to Warhammer. It's a slippery slope kids. Be careful.
      But yeah I love Boglinwatch and seeing it on your lectern thingy makes me want to go hunt them down so much. I even ended up ranting about it to my poor wife.

    Thing is, these kinds of people are not at all exclusive to that subset of NMS fans. I'm not even sure these people are actually fans in any traditional way. Because, as you pointed out, if they were they'd be busy playing the game instead of searching the 'net for targets to attack and throw tantrums over.
    These people exist for pretty much every single damn topic online--though they do tend to gravitate toward gaming a lot. They see people trying to have a conversation with some critical/analytical depth, and in they jump to yell and scream and break stuff like some two-year-old on bath salts. There are no civil disagreements if they can help it. "I disagree with you, but have enjoyed this discussion" is a thought so foreign to them I doubt they even recognize it.
    Hopefully, sometime in the near future, we as a society figure out a way to clear them out, though I'm not sure how. But it'd be nice to see them become a rarity.

      Hardly anyone complained about Ghostbusters 2016 having all female cast. The real criticism came from the movie being racist, sexist, full of dull stereotypes, unfunny and poorly written. But of course, why face the truth, when people like you can come up with bogus reasons for everything.

      It's really WEIRD. IF they loved it that much, as the most rabid No Man's Boys that they are, they would probably all be playing the fuck out of the game. Instead they go around the internet, attacking anyone who doesn't share their One True Faith.
      I only like the aesthetics of the game, never been interested in it, but I would think if you are a fan and like the thing you would be pretty busy consuming the damn game.
      Oh well, have fun Skaianet. The game seems pretty slick and fun if you are into the exploration and survival aspects. ^^

    *UNEXPECTEDLY LONG COMMENT ALERT*
    Way I see it, the blame for the insane levels of hype and zealotry over this game lies with every party concerned.
    The devs for their deliberately obtuse and vague marketing and refusal to actually describe what was in the fucking game. They quite purposefully used vague platitudes and nice-sounding but ultimately meaningless soundbites in a transparent effort to whip up a hype frenzy. It's been explained before by more eloquent people but the intention seems to have been to let people believe the game was more than it was without ever refuting it. Indeed, instead of refuting it with concrete answers, Sean Murray just spewed ever more contradictions and marketing guff.
    Blame also lies with the media for writing up every crumb of news as if Yaweh himself had sent down his prophet to bestow upon us his holy will. They knew what they were doing when they wrote about how "amazing" and "show-stealing" it was. I know the media will just pull the whole "not our fault, guv" routine (PC Gamer have already done so) but they're entirely complicit in the hype cycle, as already evidenced by Watch Dogs and Titanfall.
    Finally, ultimate blame lies on gamers themselves. Instead of acting rationally and cynically and not allowing themselves to be pulled in by flashy marketing materials *yet a-fucking-gain,* they allowed themselves to fall prey to the hype. They let themselves become the zealous fanboys because they conflate their own identity as a person with the products the enjoy. And that's fine to an extent. It's fine to identify with "gamer" culture or "nerd" culture as long as you also keep a healthy dose of cynicism in your pocket when companies try to exploit that identity and that craving to belong to overhype yet more shite.
    At the end of the day, consumers need to be the ones who push back against the hype marketing. As long as they keep falling for it, the media and the game devs will keep pushing it because those cultish fanboys help drive preorders and make money. Consumers need to look at themselves and ask "instead of getting angry at critics when a product is shitty, maybe I should just stop getting invested enough to be angry at all." It'll never happen, but that's the only way the zealotry and hype will stop. But, of course, many consumers are just too fucking thick to have that degree of self-awareness.

      couldn't agree more, in fact we've seen this same attitude spill over into movies and tv shows (DC films, anyone), where it's no longer ok to just like something in and of itself. now some people are so starved for validation that everyone else has to like it and if they don't, they're either an idiot, a hater or somehow paid to dislike the thing.
      this inevitably leads to the whole "critics don't know what they're talking about" argument that, again, is indicative of a larger societal problem: the pervasive "i know better than you" mentality that's led to the rise of anti-vaxxers, flat-earthers and chem-trailers who just absolutely refuse to accept widely established fact because it doesn't fit their narrative.

    To summarise my opinion:
    - Overpriced (should have been 15-20 quid)
    -Revealed too early and released too early (should have given extra time to implement more features to round out the experience better/more things to purchase, upgrade and build)
    - Game exceeds at being a relaxing exploration game with many dull and beautiful sights in equal measure to balance out the feeling of adventure and discovery, and fufills a very much sought after type of experience with it's quiet, relaxing, almost introspective type of gameplay, that has you pretty much playing for the sake of experiencing the worlds and not chasing some xp bar as you play - though you could grind heavily if you wished to as well. Whatever floats your boat.
    -It's both receiving justified criticism and unjust at the same time with the sheer amounts of hatred (most likely from those that haven't even played it), as if it was the worst game to ever be made, when in fact it is a game with loads of potential, yet has simply been held back with a stream of bad decisions, both marketing and game design wise.
    Those interested should give it a try once it goes on sale, as I truly find it a unique and much needed type of game that was worthy of my time and dare I say - money! It encourages the joy of discovery and exploration for no other reason than the enjoyment of discovery and exploration. Never have I taken soooo many screenshots on PS4 before as I encountered what I consider to be beautiful, strange, almost outright ridiculous sights, whether from the landscapes or flying octopus's in the sky (some of the stuff is surprisingly weird and unexpected.)

      definitely agree... huge astronomy nut.... simply flying from planet to planet in real time is more than enough for me.... i knew what it was going to be going in, and i feel it was worth it.... was i disappointed that its not everything i hoped? of course.. Would i have wanted multiplayer and better alien AI and Civilizations? absolutely .... there are countless games (that are terrific) that have let me down.... everything from skyrim to minecraft... to pokemon go.... but they're still good fun games and have value ... and who knows maybe they'll keep building upon it until it is mostly everything we hoped for... take minecraft for example.... kinda barebones at first... but now we got multiplayer, advanced pvp servers, better resources, better reasons to get said resources, multiple bosses.. if they just implement the minecraft model into no mans sky, it'll be amazing

    I remember when I was so excited about my job as videogame reviewer for one small magazine and than website. I wrote about quirky japanese and obscure console games which nobody knew, I had my small pool of readers and even when I criticized something, they knew I am fan as they are and we had interesting discussions about my issues and theyr issues with thar game. Nobody ever wanted my head on silver plate. Than redactor decided that they pay me too much for my contribution and I got more mainstream games on my table. And oh my God's incarnation Jim Sterling, things gone wrong almost inmediatelly. I didn't like very much first Uncharted and Tomb Raider: Underworld, some people had problems with it. I bloody hated Red Alert 3 but I am Red Alert fanboy who played Red Alert 2 competitively and I knew that, so I was very careful to boxed-out my personal feelings from main text and be critical only on technical issues and gameplay. But people were upset anyway. I wasn't found of Mass Effect, I liked first's gameplay and RPG elements but story gone straight through me and people was furious, even more when I criticized Mass Effect 2 for ommiting RPG elements, I liked branching paths and shooting but I was one from only two people in magazine, who didn't make this or Starcraft 2 his The Best Game of 2010 (mine was Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland and the other guy had NHL 11). At that time my Facebook page was overflood by abusive comments and every day some dick send my redactor email about my incompetence and ignorance. And than came Starcraft 2 on my table, magazine did series of articles about that game because everybody was so crazy about it, and everybody from writers must play it and wrote his thing. You guess what, I was indefferent about that game, not even critiquing it that much, I liked Warcraft 3, I played it even online and I think that it holds today as great game, but Starcraft 2... I had some performance issues, people said that my high-end AMD graphics card is shit. I said that gameplay is very solid but I am not found of excessive micromanagement of units because I am AoE and C&C fan, people said that AoE and C&C was always shit and I suck. I criticized only 3 faction when Warcraft 3 had 4, people said that I don't understand the lore of Starcraft and only 3 factions are enough. I finnished campain, I prized it's lenght, diversity of missions and new ideas like crafting new units between missions, but I refused to declare it the best strategy game of all times because this is just ridiculous (I remember when this title has AoE 2, first C&C, Empire Earth, Rise of Nations or Settlers) and people was really, REALLY upset about that. In that time I deleted my Facebook page and change my Google+ account, email of my redactor was full of angry and abusive mails and pressure on me was rising, I was ready to continue my work but magazine was afraid of that kind of backlash, plus they changed owner, and I was fired. 3 years after, magazine was scraped and webpage hanged around another year until was taken down an replaced by celebrity gossip. So, that is why I respect Jim Sterling, TotalBiscuit, AngryJoe and other TH-cam game critique personalities because they are really brave and strong enough to sustain theyr moral and professional integrity and don't let crazed maniacs to get upper hand on them.

    Honestly, I kind of feel bad for Hello Games. They made it clear in interviews that they never expected this kind of attention towards NMS, and Sean even said several times that a lot of people could find it pretty disappointing. They were just trying to make another indie game.
    And, well, then the game got overhyped to the moon and back, and now they have a toxic fanbase and a legion of haters who either think the game is the equivalent of the Bible or think it's the worst game of the decade for not living up to its extreme overhype. Wonderful.

    • @jasonkrug7928
      @jasonkrug7928 8 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Same here. They also repeatedly tried to tamp down expectations in interviews. Some of the PR videos yes tried to show the rarer more exciting bits of NMS, but that's what all games try to do. I've been following this game heavily since 2013 and it delivered exactly what I expected so I'm quite happy with it. I think a lot of people just didn't really do their homework

    • @Damion176
      @Damion176 8 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      I never even so much as gave NMS any attention until its release date and after seeing gameplay of the final product, then comparing to their 2014 "Gameplay" Video. The hype train was 100% completely their fault. Hello Games should have been more in direct control over what they wanted to make their game to look like in their advertisements, especially Sean. That is what his job as the director should have been.
      In the end, his poor mismanagement of the shit show that was NMS just paints Sean to me as another Peter Molyneux who overpromises and underdelivers.

    • @jasonkrug7928
      @jasonkrug7928 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Idk, I haven't seen any gameplay videos on it that was incredulous. Again, they showed planets that were more full of life and interesting topography, but it's not like those planets don't exist or are even that rare. I've watchted just about every interview and piece of footage for 3yrs, and I don't see any comparison with Peter Molyneux

    • @jasonkrug7928
      @jasonkrug7928 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Damion176
      The only real incredulity was saying you can see other players one time in an interview (I believe it was once). I think they are going to fix that in the next patch and this was in 2014, things change, but still, that was the one thing Sean is on the hook for.

      I think it's kind of inevitable when you both vaguely tease people about a colorful wonderland of near-infinite possibility and have Sony's marketing team. Everyone heard about it but there wasn't much information for it, so their imaginations filled in the gaps with the Perfect Game. One of my friends preordered the game because he thought it would be like Destiny but better in every way, and that hasn't panned out. Even my parents knew about this game and were interested in it, and they're certainly not gamers

    To prevent major hype for my own games (assuming I'm lead game designer by then) I should:
    Step 1) Make a reveal/ announcement trailer when game is practically done
    Step 2) Reveal release date to be 3-5 weeks near the end of the trailer
    Step 3) At the very end of the same trailer announce a playable demo being released as early as the next day
    Step 4) Release playable demo as promised
    Step 5) Absolute radio silence on social media until the game's release day
    Step 6) Release the game on day promised
    Step 7) Wait and see for the results

    • @GenericInternetter

      How about this:
      1. Release the game (3/4 of it) and make no effort to advertise it
      2. Do a big trailer/reveal about 3 days later, and put the release date at the end, and put the actual date it was released
      3. Now everyone thinks they missed the "big launch" and will scramble to get on board
      4. Repeat step 2 once a week for several weeks
      5. Release the remaining 1/4 left out of step 1 as a "free expansion due to popular demand"
      6. Repeat step 4
      There.... You've launched your game with no (noticeable) delays, and the famboys are going crazy... In a good way
      I should get paid for this shit

    • @thomasknapp6434

    In my opinion, if you want to play a game that does everything that you hoped NMS would do, just buy Starbound. It's $15, has a lot more variety with planet design (It's the only game I know of where you can land on a planet made entirely of flesh and bone, while also taking chip damage from going mentally insane), let's you build settlements and towns that other humans or aliens can live in, has multiplayer, and is easily moddable, so you can add countless hours of extra play time. I've put nearly 40 hours into the game since it came out of Early access a couple weeks ago, and I haven't even come close to beating the campaign (though I will say that the campaign mostly consists of scanning objects to find elemental stones, so I wouldn't recommend trying to make beating it the primary goal).

      The movie and music industries are shit and everyone knows this, so the only people dumb enough to have any sort of positive expectations are dumb enough to not realize those expectations weren't met. Book industry, meanwhile, has become too small and quiet to overhype shit up.

      Well... not so long ago DC fanboys were pissed at the Suicide Squad reviews. People creating petitions to ban Rotten Tomatoes from the internet.
      TV is the same thing... Arrow for example. Felicity fans have send hate towards Katie Cassidy because she plays Laurel Lance, originally intended to be Oliver's romantic interest, but they ship Oliver/Felicity. Also they have send hate toward Oliver's actor, Stephen Amell's wife, sending death threats and saying they should divorce, because they want the actors who play Oliver and Felicity to marry in real life. It's a level of crazy you can't imagine.
      Music I think people more or less accepts everyone likes different things... But also it's so easy to listen to a music yourself, that critics opinions are less relevant. But still you'll find boy band fans sending hate towards people who don't like their favorite band.
      Books I honestly never saw hate about a review.

      I think its mostly unique to video games. Maybe movies at best. Game players immerse themselves in their product, and think of it as a necessary way of life. Music and movie watchers only absorb the content and move on, remembering said media occasionally. I haven't heard of any DT's towards GRRM for the epic wait on the 6th GoT book.

    I'm neither here nor there over No Man's Sky, but I have to say your words choices and delivery this week were brilliant and there was something almost poetic to the feel of it. I dunno, I just really enjoyed listening to you. I mean I enjoy every week, but there was a little something extra that I can't quite articulate properly that made me enjoy this more than usual.

    Every fanbase has shitty fans. Some fanbases have larger proportions, some fanbases have lower lows. Not sure how many No Man's Boys are there, but they're pretty damn vitriolic.
    I still say NMS looks like a bloated indie game that I'll gladly buy when it's not sixty frigging dollars. It's 3D Starbound and I love Starbound, but that's not an extra $40 worth.
    EDIT: Gotta love how hilariously large (and most likely played up) Jim Motherfucking Sterling's ego is. So, what, is he a god of snark, video games, criticism and Boglins?
