Every game blog wants to make a name for itself, but that desire can sometimes be fulfilled in a most undesirable way. I mean, look what happened to Brash Games!
It doesn't pay its writers, it revokes author credits when people leave, and its owner has over a decade of duplicitous, shady shit to answer for.
A number of us pooled our resources and drew on many anonymous sources to blow this publication wide open and oh dear is there some grimy shit pooling in its guts.
    Bonus Content: Fuck Konami News
    (Special Thanks:
Kirioth, whose communication and help has been invaluable. Check out his own video on Brash: • B.S Patrol: Brash Game...

So strange to see a website I used to contribute to being featured on The Jimquisition.
I can confirm that all the reviews I contributed to the site - games I paid for myself - have all had my name removed and contributed to Brash Games. The only proof I have I wrote them is partial transcripts on my personal blog.
The Ace Gamez debacle was a joke. Constant disparaging and inflammatory emails between Paul and Geoff lead to good writers leaving the site and should absolutely have been kept private and not shared with every writer of the site. I only found out that Ace Gamez had been deleted when, after sending samples of my work on the site to my favourite games magazine for a Staff Writer position, discovered that they all redirected to PornHub instead. Of course I never heard back from that job.
    The entire situation sucks.

It's like "intership". It's just a way to get free labor. I could understand "Exposure" if it was strictly as a trial type thing. You know "Hey come write for me, give me 3 articles and if it works out, you are on staff." Butt fuck this "write for free, until you get popular and then you can go do your own thing" bullshit.

    • @generico366
      @generico366 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

romad20000 Internship is a way to build up work experience which you can put on your resume when you want to get an actual job. It's completely understandable that an employer wouldn't want to pay someone with no experience because they have no idea what their work ethic is like. Internship allows both employers and employees to tread the waters without any serious disadvantage to either party. "Working for exposure" on the other hand is just getting people who make professional quality work and squeezing free labour out of them because they're not well known.

    • @philmysterious7176
      @philmysterious7176 7 ปีที่แล้ว +27

hakurei oni, if the work is "good" enough to get published then the creator is "good " enough to get paid; doesn't matter what their age or education level is. Your argument is nonsense because the very fact that a company uses the work at all means they think that it's "good enough" to make money for them and therefore the creator needs to get paid for that work.

    • @jonathanrouse
      @jonathanrouse 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

Thesuperduperbooster Current college student here, graphic design industry is in the same position. I am told time and time again not to work for free, no pro-bono allowed. College students have varying levels of skill but those of us who really put in the effort day in and day out will not work for free due to the fact that it really doesn't help you out. It soils the industry and makes companies think they can get away with this bullshit by doing it for free.

If you are any sort of artist, some people like to pretend that what you do isn't "real work" or you have to jump through extra hoops to get compensation. Absolutely not. Jim is right. You have a skill that someone else needs or wants, and you have the right to demand appropriate compensation. Even interns get paid many times. And I'm talking about REAL interns, who actually participate and shadow the veterans, not the one's who are hired to be glorified coffee runners. Never take an internship (or any job for that matter) that doesn't allow you to survive via compensation and that doesn't allow you to advance your skills. It so difficult when you are starting out because you just assume you know nothing and the people hiring you know everything, but trust your gut, it will rarely get you into trouble and will often keep you out of it. If it doesn't feel right or fair, that's probably because it isn't.

ohhhh, don't remind me. i got into PCs soon after changing cities and i did the usual stuff looking for new friends and found i was good at building PCs and LANs - especially for gaming.
But soon i was repairing mates or acquaintances PCs for £10 or a pack of cigarettes.
You know i found out a few years later i had attached 4 PCs that i'd just built IN THE OFFICES of a record company then attached them to the server farm.
i was paid £60. Someone later told me that my 'friend' had totally abused our friendship as a normal techie would have charged between £6-8000 for a job like that done in one day. My guess is he DID get £7000 and simply kept the cash, giving me £60 because i really didn't have a clue about 'mates' rates' when it came down to PCs. I only discovered later that, for someone who was quite wealthy? he was a real tight arsed twat!
Then again, he's a yank and they ... nah, everybody does it.. if they can get you to do something for nothing they will.

I'm so glad to see this. I currently work as a critic for CeX Marketing and was picked up by Brash Games. I was so pleased because I thought it meant that my work was being discovered and enjoyed; it was so vindicating. After a few back and forth emails with Paul Ryan it quickly became evident that he, for one, doesn't actually read through any emails (or look through previous work) unless you're agreeing to work with him, but also, sends mass emails to whoever he can get his hands on.
Additionally, he would dismiss emails regarding payments, but the one time he decided to respond, became condescending and borderline hostile; no one gets paid, did you not read the email?
... no such email was sent, of course.

Thank you for calling out the bullshit that is "exposure". As a musician I get that word thrown at me all the time and it immediately invokes a sense of rage within me. I remember playing this "festival" with my old band on a uni campus many years ago for "exposure", and guess what? There was no one at this place to begin with besides the soundman and his girlfriend. The only time exposure is even remotely valid as a concept is if you're playing support for a much larger and more well known band (and that's assuming a good amount of people turn up early enough to see you), but even then if that band can pull in a good crowd then the promoter should have the decency to pay for your petrol money at the very least, because they should be making enough on the door that they can afford it.

I have an idea for an episode. This past week, EA dropped the trailer for Star Wars Battlefront 2 while also announcing it will make up for the sins of the first game by having single player, offline co-op, and no season pass. This was eerily similar to what EA did with Titanfall 2, and those changes were well received by gamers and critics alike. Could you do an episode analyzing this marketing tactic and if EA &a other big publishers could turn this into a recurring business model?

    • @Jambobist

While true, the game itself had nothing to do with Titanfall 2's sales. The game still made many Game of the Year and Top 10 of 2016 Lists, but it was released between Battlefield 1 and CoD: Infinite Warfare. The game itself was praised for cutting all of the greedy BS that the first game tried and failed to popularize.

I want to say that in the past 5 years Jim Sterling hasn't paid me a penny. In that time we've seen him move from Destructoid to the Escapist and finally his own show and not once has money changed hands between us. Not only that but he has never given me any feedback nor have I been credited once. I mean, sure, I never wrote or worked with him at all during that time but I still feel the need to say it.

Well said. That might mean they decide to replace you with somebody who doesn't make these demands, but it'd be best for you in the end. Making games yourself even if they're nothing special is better for a resume than having little proof of help from an actual development studio.

I so fell into this trap myself. A friend I know was contributing to a website that was unknown, wanted to get some more contributors. It was upstanding enough that it was receiving review codes and had access to private media, but My contributions went from being an occasional thanked contribution, to the point of 60% of the active content, for barely an occasional review code, at some points the editor was sending review code to others, but say it was something like dark souls, I'd have been on new game+ and wrote a review for it anyway on my very old destructoid blog, over a week before the other person would have sent it back in.
It was very much a passion for gaming and a willingness to write about said games at the right time that someone thought my stuff was good enough to post, you get that little nugget of pride, even if you know only 50 people would ever actually read it on a no-name website.
I genuinely hope people who have the passion to write about games as well as play them follow every word of advice you gave in this video Jim, because it is the most exploitative things I've ever been a part of.

Thank you for bringing this to light. "Payment through exposure" is not only a scourge upon games journalism, but almost any creative industry including game development, a field I have a degree in, that I've been trying to break into. Last year some friends of mine in my college class were given a job modeling and texturing assets at an indie studio in the Bay Area. Initially they were told up front they'd receive a substantial paycheck for their efforts. Instead, midway through their time at the studio they were essentially told "Welp... there's no more money. but we'll pay you in exposure". Sure, it's something to add to their resumes, but more importantly it's a highly shady hiring practice reliant upon deceit. I understand that indie devs have a very limited budget to work with, but ya know... people need money to eat, and pay rent.

I will say, hearing your advice about getting into the games media scene makes me feel much better about starting my own blog last year. I don't think that I'll ever get to a point where I can write professionally in that context, but to hear that it's best to work for yourself instead of for a site that offers experience and exposure in return for participation is music to my ears. I've written for not only myself, but also for a website that didn't pay me, and also for another that more or less required me to write clickbait in order for my work to get promoted.
Writing in my free time, even though it doesn't reach a large audience, is rewarding in its own right.

Writers not getting paid is standard practice here in Sweden. I've been at swedish Eurogamer, IGN and a few other sites and never gotten paid once. We only get experience and exposure as payment. A few sites try to pay their writers but the largest, like Gamereactor, only pay their Editor in Chief and top News Editor as far as I know.
Economic success is really difficult for written media here in Sweden.

Hell I didn't even make it 4 min into the video before I was fuming. A few years ago I was fresh out of College with my engineering degree and no work prospects. I ended up getting together with a guy who was in the process of putting together an start-up. He didn't have the capital to pay me for my first few contracts but I didn't care cause I really was excited about being considered for a chance to be part of a growing company. We got a few contracts from the city and we went to work. It must of taken about a month to bring together the first contract,( my supposed partner helped about 3 hours a day, 3 days a week). I was completely broke and having to work/live out of my car but I still had high hopes for my future. Anyway a few days later I get a call from the guy telling me it just isn't going to work out, and my work will not be used. I was devastated, but what can ya do. Anyway fast forward a few months later and it seemed all of my work was used, and it helped secure future business.
So yea I feel those writers. There are just a lot of shitty people in the world. Anyway thanks for hearing my rant!

Thank you Jim. Your advice applies to people working in all forms of media employment. As a freelance film/tv editor I've dealt with the exposure douchebags enough, if whoever is offering you a supposed "opportunity" and their only compensation offered is that bullshit line of "exposure" then QUIT IMMEDIATELY. You really are better off making your own brand and going it alone when trapped in a situation like that. It's insane how common it is for independent media companies to get away with this borderline slavery bullshit. Or as a wise freelancer once said: "fuck you, pay me."

The ending speech is fantastic. Not only is it relevant to writers for the game industry, but freelancing artists in general. So many people in film, graphic design, music, anything really, have their work completely trivialized by people who will try to pay them with "exposure."
The most important thing we can do is NOT take that kind of bullshit work. Solidarity sends a message. But if someone agrees to do free labor, that contradicts this message, and tells companies that this kind of work can be done for free, since even a few people are willing to do it.

The whole exposure bullshit is something people need to get rid of in all industries really, I've had friends in bands in the past struggling to get by because "they have to work for free" and lots of models or photographers get spun the "exposure" line as well. The saddest thing is people just need to think a little and realise if they all said no they'd need to pay people as otherwise their company collapses as they have no content , instead the selfish ones just think "hell yea other people are refusing to work so I can steal all the work!"

Amen, good sir. Brash Games nonsense aside, the overarching message about not settling for "exposure" should be heeded. Hustle, hard work, knowing how to network, and persistence have always been keys in the gaming press business-- and now, there are tons of tools from which those who serious about trying to make this into a living can choose from.
Put those deadlines on yourself. Learn to build a brand, attract an audience, and reach out to companies when the time is right. Unless you're getting real compensation, you're better off doing these things yourself and reaping the benefits of that hard work for your own.

...and last I checked every damn video game site was definitely for profit, lol.

Even a "non profit" needs to pay people so they can eat, sleep and pay taxes in the modern world.
      No excuse.(period)
You can be damned sure those 'managers' in such 'non profit' organisations get paid, so why shouldn't the rest of the employees ?

I dunno', I've interned for a couple smaller non-profits where everyone including the CEO was a volunteer still working their day job, so..

There was a group of us in Kirioth's discord digging through the Brash Games website and my God, the rabbit hole is deep.
Most recent development, to no one's surprise, is that Brash are using a bot to attach links using keywords. An example of this, if you have an article that has the line "the character is on a long journey", the word "journey" will have a link on it going to Brash's article on Journey: Collector's Edition on the PS3 (interestingly, the first word in that article is also "Journey" and links back to the same article, basically refreshing the page). It most likely is a bot because (as the example shows) the link exists despite the context not being quite there. However, in the gambling articles, it appears to have choice words or phrases which are hyperlinked and they go to the exact website that they are contextually related to (regardless of how vague that context is).
If you want to see the bot in action, look at any article on Brash's website and check out the links it's got (the one that got my attention was the Tethered Review which I found through Brash's twitter) and then try to locate a gambling article and see the difference in how the hyperlinking is done. They've made it difficult to use the buttons to navigate but the search bar works just fine so search for "david james" or "gambling" and you'll get some hits.
There's another thing which makes us constantly ask ourselves every time we find something out about Brash, "WHEN DOES THIS END..."
    Have a nice day.

13:19 "What does that word mean in this context?" Love the delivery of this line.
