California. My late mom made beans like this. She added shredded cheese to the soup which gave the soup a little thicker consistency. They were fabulous! I miss my mom. Thank you.
Orlando FL….. I grew up in the Deep South….and raised on beans, red beans and rice, butter beans, pinto beans, black eyed peas…. But I’ve never seen them like this. I can’t wait to try them this way, thanks!
I NEED a GOOD Pinto Bean recipe!! My Daddy used to make them & I only remember him using the Beans, maybe a Hamhock(?), & we'd put diced Onions in after with Fresh Cornbread!!! My childhood girlfriend tried making me some when I visited her years ago & tho it was nice, it just didn't have Daddy's Flavor*Touch to it.
Watching from Hamburg, Germany, where I hve lived for the last 54 years. I'm 88 and miss the delicious food my grandmammy used to make in Oakman, Alabama.when I get homesick, I go down to the local McDonalds and gobble down a big Mac. This recipe provides a welcome alternative. Definitely with ham hock. Guten Appetit!
California. Agree hamhock added if not vegetarian or even just a few pieces of smoked ham or bacon makes it even better than with no ham. I am sure it is great without too. My grandfather was from Hamburg.
@@Snoopy-h9b I visited Birmingham once around 30 years ago. Also Oakman where I was surprised the town had named a street (Hooper street) after my grandfather who was county commissioner around 100 years ago. Don't have much motivation to go back anymore as all my relatives are either dead or after such a long time, have lost contact. Thanks for your interest, just tried the recipe with hammock. Finger lickin good. Congrats on our newly elected president. MAGA!
I do a thirty minute boil. Drain and rinse. Followed by fresh water. This barely wrinkles the skin and the beans only take a couple of hours after that. I like to fry about 1/4 pound of pan sausage high heat and pour about a cup of water into the browned sausage to get all of the stuck brown out of the pan into the beans. Follow up with little Smokeys to warm just before finished.
Hello! Writing from San Diego, CA! This is the best bean soup EVER! I was a little skeptical about adding the orange juice at the end, but it’s genius and makes the soup tastes SO good! Who would’ve thought! The only bad thing is that it took the beans much longer to cook than 50 minutes (more like six hours). Guess next time I’ll boil them for ten minutes, then soak them overnight, instead of just soaking them 20 minutes, as you suggest. Other than that, your recipe is very easy to follow and makes one very delicious pot of pinto bean soup! Thank you! 🙏
The older the beans are the longer they can take. Obviously a pressure cooker is usually the fastest. However using a rice cooker with the lid slightly open to allow steam escape works well to. You will have to monitor it depending on your settings and add water as needed. Without a lid cook time much longer
A great way to make the beans cook faster is once they are rinsed you drop them into rapidly boiling water slowly and then turn the heat down to a simmer and let them cook. I do it this way and they’re done in max of three hours usually too I learned from a very old womanand now I’m a very old woman🥰
I soak my bean with a spoon of baking soda over night. Rinse them well the following morning and boil them with some salt for about an hour in a pressure cooker
Idk about only 50 min cook time. I do mine under pressure 60 min.🎉 looks tasty. Finish however you like. Chili's, smoked ham hock, kale, spinach, leftover ham, etc. Love beans.
Good point I don't remember my grandma cooking beans for less than 2 hours and soaking them overnight for 24 hrs. I don't think these beans are cooked through unless they like to eat them al dente.
He says around 1:28 to transfer the cream mixture to the beans and continue to cook, but doesn't say for how long. I think the 50 minute cook time is just for the vegetables
Mmmm ! Thank you I’m in Northern Canada…I make lots of bean things but this squeeze of lime is something I’ve never heard before Looking forward to this recipe
