1.) Most important! Soak beans 6 to 8 hrs up to 24 hrs.
2.) Add 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda per cup of dry beans while soaking and rinse beans several times before cooking.
3.) Add any of these while cooking: ginger, turmeric, cumin, fennel seed, Kombu (seaweed), Ajwain seasoning, Epazote seasoning.
4.) Pressure cook with clean water.
can add lemon juice after it is cooked.
Least gassy beans: mung bean, azuki beans and lentils.
Most gassy beans: kidney bean, navy bean and chickpea.
If you already have gas, drink ginger water.
Thank you for summarising! It helps.

thx for the recap! what nice gift!
Saved 7 minutes of my life. Thank you!
Thanks ❤
The way I cook beans to cut down on a lot of gas, is I bring the beans to a boil, and add 1 teaspoon of baking soda. The beans will bubble up and try to over flow . Remove from heat and turn down to medium high heat and let beans boil for 1 minute. The water will turn greenish. Drain the water off and fill with fresh water, and cook beans as usual... It works for me. And I don't have to soak them...
Yes! Baking soda has been my method for years! 👌🏾🫘 I love me some beans!! 😋
Never needed baking soda if the beans are boiled for about 10 min. Let them soak in hot water until water changes..brown, greyish, rinse and repeat one or two more times then cook…Julia Childs way of degassing beans. It works
I don't want to wait and let them soak, I want to start them cooking fast...@@cathyblankenship5824

Love fabulous Julia Child ! TFS her degassing beans technique ! Greetings from Chicago ! 🤗
My friend from Haiti taught me this trick. 😊
When I was in India, people told me to add ginger to beans so I wouldn't get gas. Works for me!
@realandsurreal Ground or fresh ginger?
Yeah ground or fresh ginger
Fresh is best-but both can work.
Yes ....adding ginger works for me
And it's very tasty😊
Girl I tried the bicarb soda thingy with lentils and damn it is amazing. no gas or bloat at all. I also soaked my lentils for over 24 hours rinsing them after every 12. I then cooked them in a pressure cooker. These tips have literally changed my life.
Girl that’s what’s up! 🙌🏽 I’m so grateful these helped you!!
I overdossed on lentils...i was turbo charged for weeks as i struggled to get my digestion used to a new food..didn,t work. Going to use this vid and comments to try again.....wish me peaceful lentils. Lol xxxx
I hope it was was peaceful @nesanesa9547! 😝
❤❤❤❤
Soaking 18-20 hrs, 2 rinses, pressure cook, and eating them the next day all help my digestion.
I also get beans not sprayed with pesticides while growing.
As an indian i swear by ajwain, fennel, cumin, ginger etc spices and completely avoid soda bi carb as it completely kills many nutrients from the beans. Just soak overnight with couple of pieces of ginger and pressure cook enough. The beans will be fully cooked and digestible.
What’s ajwain and where can I buy it
In Mexico, my friend always ate a garlic clove in bits while eating beans. This prevented the gas. I tried it and it was the fix. There is something in the fresh garlic that helps.
How cool!
Wow, raw garlic really makes my tummy hurt and gives me bad gas. I’m not sure if that would work for me
great, now i have garlic farts and my breath stinks
Garlic adds gas on it's own.
Of course, the reason garlic helps is because 'garlic breath' clears the room to allow you to fart unhinged ;)
As a retired person I'm free to eat beans 24/7. Thanks for passing on correct information about type of sugar in beans. I googled it. Too many others pass along unresearched info. Thanks 👍.
What a lovely young lady already on a healthy path and helping others to avoid bad dietary choices. ❤❤❤ Thank you.
I love beans what I learned from my Nigerian
grandmother is to soak mine at least 24 hours with water and spoon full of baking soda. 🙂🙂🙂🙂 great video
Nice! 💜
Yes. I learned the same the same trick from my Southern grandma. It was the only way my papa did not stink up the entire house.

The kombu/carrot tips and categories of less gassy to more were so interesting! We’re in a drought so I was looking for ways that use the least amount of water, long-distance transport, plastic, and planning. Thanks for collecting all these options!
Omg girl, you have no idea how timely this video is! I'm a newbie and babay I have been toot toot tootie for 2 days n I'm like yikes I don't about all this lol. Thanks for the great tips🥴
Lol! Yea you need these hacks! 😆
Thank you very much for your advice and assistance I could do well with your advice so often I get so gassey thanks much.
JuliaChilds way is how I do them. Cover with water, bring to a boil for about 10 minutes. Let sit until water is brown and change water. Repeat until water remains clear then cook. No gas!
You don't soak it overnight?
@@TaLeng2023 No. No need to soak if you just bring to a boil and wait until the water turns brown ( Pintos) The brown water is the undigestable part. Repeat again one or two more times then cook. Julia Childs cooking

Does it have any flavour left after?
Soak and Drain! Draining away the soaking liquid helps remove the gas issue too.
For sure!

Just saw this video fir first time. I like your style . Not so much unnecessary flare and drama. Thank you
LMAO My dad threatened to disown me if I tried to de-fart the beans, he's all like "but how else am I gonna clear the room?"
I've been cooking beans the last three nights: first mung beans, then black-eyed peas, and today adzuki beans. All of them are so delicious the way I've been making them. The mung beans and black-eyed peas are good after soaking 2 or 3 hours. The adzuki beans I soaked for about 16 hours. First I rinsed them three times before soaking. Then after soaking I rinsed again and again with filtered water. I put some ghee in the bottom of the pan (for vegans you can use olive oil or coconut oil), heated it, added turmeric and black cumin seeds, then half a minute later I added the beans with water and coconut milk/cream. I added a teaspoon of black pepper and cooked for a couple hours. Then I added ginger, a sweet potato, a rutabaga, and a beet, plus coriander, fennel seeds, fenugreek seeds, a little chicory root, and let it simmer. Towards the end of cooking I added a few shakes of salt, and oh my my! It is so-o-o goood! Sweet and delicious (with no added sugar), it's yummy!
I didn't know about adding baking soda to the soaking. I must try that. I also didn't know about the two things you mentioned after that, which would be worth trying.
Thanks, great video! Soaking does make such a difference! I also add at least 2-3 large bay leaves per lb of dried beans to help de-gas w/ the other spices when I cook them. Once cooked, I freeze some in single serving size containers, better than canned or other fast food! 😄
Smart cooking!
Brilliant video.
Besides soaking before cooking, the best hint for dealing with gas is to eat lots of beans. Our microbiome becomes more efficient at digesting a given food according to how often we eat it.
All digesting organisms produce gas.
ooh, I've never heard of Kombu. I'll have to try that, along with the other seasonings you mentioned. Thanks for sharing these helpful tips! 🙌🏿💞🌿
Deeply appreciate your input, your knowledge regarding preparing beans prior to cooking... love you for sharing your knowledge base with us...
I soak beans in summer overnight in winter 24 hours.
For extra heavy sorts like Fava beans I add baking soda to the first 12 hours of soaking.
Next day cook them for 10 minutes on high heat in fresh water without seasoning and let sit for like 3 hours.
Then change the water and cook with the seasoning and everything.
This takes away most of the gas.
very good.. my grandmother, we called her maamaw.. put baking soda in her beans.. when she made soup beans and cornbread.. she would load it up with saltpork.. such as was eaten during the great depression in Kentucky....
Thank-You Soooo Much!!! My Mother always soaked her beans before cooking, but I never knew why she did.😁💟
Incredibly informative. Thank you so much!
I cook mine in a crock pot over night with onions and garlic.
I always put 🥓 in them for flavour.
Sometimes I put leftover ham with the bone in my beans.
With the leftover beans l like to make homemade chilli 🎉
Thank you for your help
Thanks for your very usefull insight. Tradition here in Southern Italy is cooking beans: 1) with clay pot 2) very slow 3) less than 100° C 4) soaking . The quality of beans vary immensely and very good local varieties are again available.

Aw thank you Abeer. Best of health! 😊💜
Thanks, I didn’t know many people don’t use them due to these issues. Soaking and boiling is commonly done in Indian cooking. I think baking soda is not used , it helps in cooking it faster but it makes it gassier. We add garam masala as it has all the spices which help to reduce gastric issues. Beans and lentils are great sources of plant based protein.
Interested in hearing more from you about this
I normally boil my beans with a little baking soda for 5 minutes and let it soak overnight....rinse in the morning a couple of times and then cook very fast.
Great video, great info! I soak mine for at least 24 hours, but usually 36 hours. I change the water every 10/12 hours, but I understand that not everybody has the time to do that. The baking soda trick sounds good, I'll try that. 🙂

Asafoetida tiny pinch also helps. Didn't know about yhe iodine and seaweed.
If your gassy and need to be somewhere quick a 20 min fix is having charcoal tablets with a large glass of water.

The thing I do to de-gas beans is: Bring a pot up with the beans in it to a slow rolling boil then dump the water after 10 minutes and rinse the pot and beans and repeat that 2 more times. That should be 3x in total for a total of 30 minutes. Then if you are going to cook the beans after rinsing for the 3rd time then boil for an hour or so and do not salt because that will cause your beans to have to cook longer. - I normally drain the beans and dry them thoroughly and store them in the fridge until I am ready to cook them.
Yes. I soak my beans over night and use a slow cooker. I want to try the baking soda trick now. Thanks for sharing
Awesome Felicia! Thanks for sharing 💜
All one has to do is eat beans REGULARLY. THAT'S IT! No gas. No problems with digestion: PERIOD!!!
Not good to cook beans with slow cooker. Higher temperature is required for cooking healthy beans. Pls research it.

Very helpful. I didn't know about the baking soda.
Thank you for all of these fantastic tips, Melissa! Your presentation style is tremendous; I subscribed before you asked! 😊 You're beautiful and so is your backdrop. Your video probably hit my tl because I cooked beans earlier and shared that info with a couple of people so they could come get some. I'm not vegetarian or vegan, but I've been working on getting in more beans and less meat. Last week was lentils and this week is pintos. Both turned out really buttery and the pintos are rich like chili. I'm glad that your video popped up for me as confirmation and for some new information, as well, like kombu and ajwain. We use some of the same spices, seasonings, and vegetables besides those, though. Za'tar, Garam Masala, and 21 Salute are three of my favorites! In addition to carrot, onion, celery/ parsley, and tomato, try some crystallized orange peel, too, for a delightful surprise. Cinnamon works wonders in black beans, pintos, and some others. Also, I add in olive oil, or avocado oil. Instead of cooking them overnight, I parboil and then steep for an hour before cooking with the baking soda included. Again, thank you, thank you, thank you! I look forward to more content from you! ❤
Aw thank you for your kind words-and for subscribing! Means so much! I’ll have try adding cinnamon to my black beans 😊
Could you please elaborate on the baking soda remark you made?
@@GeorgiannaMartinSure! Soaking the beans overnight in baking soda is supposed to help reduce bloating and gas, but last week I forgot to add it to the soaking water (discard afterwards), so I just added a little baking soda while the beans were cooking. The ratio is approximately 1 tablespoon of baking soda per 2 cups of beans. Hopefully, that helps. Blessings!
Thank you!!!! This was very helpful. 😃👍🏻
So glad, Connie!
I love your hairwrap! It just looks so good 👌🏿
Great information thank you. I use soaking, baking soda and carrots. Haven't heard of the kombu but will definitely try.
Great information and will assist me on my new journey as raw vegan.🙏🏾
So glad it’s helpful 😊
I saw on another channel that if you use baking soda it could leach out the vitamin B6 in the beans. Also it was said that you should let the beans soak 48 hours and rinse them at 24 hours. I don't know something to think about.
Thanks! I appreciate what you said about it not being easy. The better approach is to problem-solve, not to give up.
Aw David! This totally made my day. Really appreciate the super thanks love. THANK YOU 😊

Hi Michael! Thank you so much for sharing the love! Blessings on your health journey, and thanks for being here!
Ajwain is called as carom seeds. One spice you forgot is aseafoetida or hing in hindi. Ajwain should be added while simmering to have best results. Hing should be added to the seasoning.
Should be?
Thank you for your healthy and beautiful video. I love beans. We eat them every week. I learned your tips from my grandmother. It works ❤

I remember my experience with chickpeas. i tried to make chickpea salad with the canned chickpeas and my system could not tolerate them no matter how much i loved the salad. Someone suggested I cook the chickpeas myself. I didn't want to because i wanted the convenience of opening a can, but reluctantly i did after soaking them overnight, and to my surprise i had no issues with the ones i cooked myself. Lesson learned! Thanks for sharing these wonderful tips and helpful info!
Yay! You’re welcome.
I think it's because they cooked them in the can, while sterilizing. I soak beans and discard the soaking water. I remember an old recipe that say to cook them in the soaking water, best recipe for gas.

Welcome Danielle! Thank you for subscribing! ❤️😌
Don’t forget the couple of drops of Lugol’s solution (iodine), does a chemical reaction with the sugars so that they don’t cause gas. That’s the reason you can soak the beans with a large piece of seaweed - same purpose. Just be sure to thoroughly rinse the beans after soaking with the iodine so you don’t eat too much of that.
Cool!
Did you just add some drops to the soaking water?
@@CK-vp6hh Yes, just 2 - 3 drops of Lugol's solution in the bean soaking water but not more than that. Then just rinse beans thoroughly after soaking. Then you don't have to mess with the Konbu seaweed
The incredible unami from kombu is not to be missed tho!
I just cook it with the beans.
I soak my beans 24 hr tho
Except lentil or split peas, those are 8hrs
@@YeshuaKingMessiah Yes, I did this as well! I used Kombu for a couple decades, but 100 - it never eliminated the gas completely. Sadly, as much as I love all kinds of beans, bean soups, bean salads and spreads, I rarely eat them anymore and I feel much better.
I soak my beans for 3 days changing water every 12 hours with rinse . That does it for me . Then I cook then in a slow cooker until they turn creamy .

Great video, just missing one anti-gad ingredient: hing (aka asafoetida). You can get it in an Indian grocer, strong onion/garlic/aromatic flavour, and incredibly powerful anti-flatulent. Just make sure to store it in a glass jar, as the flavour seeps through plastic and and affect other spices it's stored with.
I have IBS and endometriosis, so for me it’s not just gas but incredibly painful (basically debilitating) cramps and bloating. I cut out beans completely a number of years ago. But, I miss the flavour, versatility and especially the health benefits of beans. It would also really increase the types of meals my pescatarian boyfriend and I can have together. I recently got an instant pot so I’m going to give these methods a try and see if they work for me. Thanks so much for all of the tips!
I relate as a fellow IBS sufferer who also gets those excruciating cramps and a whole bunch of nastiness in my stomach region 😂
I'm praying this will work. I've basically stopped eating beans because of the gassiness and other issues but if I can eat them without the negative stuff it'll be a game changer because I love beans and used to eat them like crazy (until I realised they were a big part of what was messing up my stomach).
Thoughroughly rinsing canned beans works really well too

Hello I read your comment on cooking beans in an instant pot. I have a question, do you cook the beans in just plain water and salt? Then drain the cooked beans and water. Add fresh water, and beans and seasoning back into the instapot. Then cook for 5 to 8 minutes. Could you please reply if I sent this message correctly and if I understood it correctly. I love cooking beans in my Instapot but I never thought to drain the cooking water. Then add fresh water and seasonings after that. To reduce the gas in the beans.
@marionbartley214 there are various methods. While many do not discard the bean water, you absolutely can if you prefer.
Beanz, beanz, good for your heart. The more you prep them, the less you fart!

What about bean-o before-and rinse and drain the can beans then cook?
Thanks for subbing Brandy! I’ve never tried bean-o though some have success with it. Rinsing and draining canned beans is an option, but if you want to be super careful I’d give them a quick soak or boil for easier digestion.
I appreciate this video. Gas hadn’t been an issue for me until I moved to the desert. I’ve learned to eat more foods with water in them 🥒
