Thanls for sharing Dave. Great video. The triostar is definitely impressive, and the price has gone down significantly from 2 years ago. I picked up a couple for 12 bucks each last summer. As for why I would pay a couple of hundred versus a cheaper alternative? Mainly its about want. I definitely could and have gotten cheaper similar looking are vibing plants but sometimes thats not enough and I just want what I want. For me it doesn't make sense to add a plant to my collection that "settled" for versus one I really want. The same goes for adding a less expensive or "common" plant versus chasing the trend.

Great video Dave. You really took your time and researched this matter. The common plants have been living in our family homes for generations two reasons: 1. They are easily available . 2. They are affordable. Long before Instagram, we bought the plants for those 2 reasons. Not because Instagram folks made us think we had to have them. You opened a lot of people's eyes on this video. Loved it 😁

Enjoyed the video. The problem with rare plants is that they don’t stay rare. I’ve learned too wait, lost a lot of money buying rare plants with big prices that 2 yrs later wasn’t with a fifth of what paid. So if you really want a “rare” plant be patient it will come down just like the PPP or the Spiritis Sancti. 💚

Now that’s facts! I completely understand because I’ve lost money as well. I buy at whatever price I feel is comfortable…it’s never a race to have it first for me.

Thanks for the great alternatives. I am not new to gardening but am just getting back into houseplants after about a 40-year break. Until I get more comfortable with my ability to keep them alive, it's good to know I don't have to spend a lot of money.

Great video as always, I would like to add more option :
    - Philodendron polypodioides > Philodendron tortum
    - Monstera Obliqua > Monstera Adansonii
    - Philodendron Spiritus Sancti > Anthurium longissimilobum
    - Philodendron melanochrysum > Philodendron micans

ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO!!! I WOULD RATHER SAVE MY MONEY AND PURCHASE THE PLANT(S) ON MY EXPENSIVE WISH LIST THAN SETTLE FOR ITS SUBSTITUTE. IT'S LIKE SAVING TO PURCHASE A G-WAGON, OR SETTLING FOR A HORSE AND CARRIAGE. I HAVE A LONG WISH LIST AND EVERY SUMMER I CHISEL AT IT BIT BY BIT. I FEEL BLESSED WHEN I CAN PURCHASE SOMETHING I REALLY WANTED AND WORKED HARD FOR. I FEEL SO HAPPY TO FINALLY HAVE SOMETHING I PRAYED FOR IN MY HANDS. THIS SUMMER 2023, I CONCENTRATED ON MY HOYA COLLECTION. I HAVE A FEW MORE TO BUY, BUT IT'S WORTH THE WAIT. KEEP THE VIDS COMING-ENJOYING, AND LEARNING.

Hi Dave! Still need the Squami! I would say I was just a plant grower before....I did collect hoya and euphorbias and begonias, snakes, chinese evergreens, before 2020 and had an "over" amount of plants.....but now I am a collector as well of more rare plants and plants you cannot get local....so yes I am a collector of philos, anthuriums, and hoya! And still love all plants...so I collect almost everything but no more calatheas or peperomias or monsteras! My dark form forgettii does well for me too! Same store as yours! Love your moms gift you got her! I am sure she loves it! Your S Shake is a beauty and growing well :)

As a collector I enjoy the challenge/sport of getting a hard to find plant. As a hobbyist I enjoy trying out a variety of common and uncommon plants. Lately, I'm enjoying trying to get plants to grow to their full potential on moss poles. To me, I want to find those plants that do well in my care and bring me joy. Because of you, I'm going to add some anthurium hybrids into my collection. 😀

I haven’t even finished the video yet but I jus had to say you explained plant collecting so well! Some get offended or take it personal when collectors are not into “common plants” but jus like any other collector of things part of the enjoyment is the hunt of the thing and if it’s easily accessible there’s no hunt!
Personally I’m somewhere between collector and jus lover of plants..I’m too cheap to be full on collector😂😂

See this is why I know we’d definitely vibe Haha…Great video! I’ve been in various big box stores recently picking up common houseplants. I bought a lemon lime maranta and a silver pothos just yesterday. I also picked up 2 PPP at WALMART for just $25 a piece! We KNOW how much those used to cost a couple of years ago!
I’m a collector too though and I still love my rare aroids and orchids. So like you, I buy what I want and pay what I’m comfortable paying for a plant. I also buy a plant if it “speaks to me” for whatever reason and I feel it HAS TO BE part of my collection. That said, I finally gave in and bought a Monstera Albo…even after telling myself I wasn’t feeling the Albo like that! LOL😂🤣
I’m gonna be honest with you though, I’m mad jealous of your Strawberry Shake…it’s been on my wish list for a minute 😍😂Haha

I would so love to add a Doc Block, Monstera lechleriana variegata and an Anthurium podophyllum to my collection, with the latter 2 having been on my wishlist for ages now, but unfortunately I've not found either of them for sale in the UK yet. Hopefully this year 🤞

I love caring for my plants but it takes time and money. When you have a plant you can’t easily replace, it makes the regular investment of you time feel “worth it”. I have some common plants but deep down, I am not as excited when they thrive because they thrive anywhere (that’s why they’re so common). Obviously exceptions apply. That and diversity is interesting.
Oh and I think the P. 69686 is a great alternative to the P. Joepii. I feel like the price has gone down on the 69686 and it is such a great grower.
The Goeppertia warscewiczii (previously Calathea warszewiczii) is interesting. I don’t typically struggle keeping leaves looking nice but that one aways had a leaf getting crispy. She didn’t earn her keep.

    • @AroidDistrict
      @AroidDistrict  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah, your right. The challenge of raising the plant to maturity is “a thing”. Oh I’m seeing the 69686 indeed drop to 30-40$ average.
