    I saw a video from Kaylee Ellen, after going to Thailand… she said it was unbelievable, but also low-key expected, the amount of unknown hybrids, new strains and just “special” plants being grown behind the scenes by the manufacturers. Outside of North and South America, Europe, etc. Mostly in Asia she said… they’re being SUPER stingy and cautious, and/or waiting for a new “spike” in the houseplant market interest. But I believe it. They let things out in tiny doses, holding onto the majority… and that’s cool; like, it is their livelihood and their work. Meanwhile we’re all out here like wtffffff ☠️

      Yeah I'm familiar with Thailand creations. They seem to specialize in unique variegation and growth mutations derived from tissue culture labs. I'd like to see newer Botanist follow the footsteps of Robert McColley, Dr. Block, and the dude from Silver Khrome. They perfect and patent their creations with deliberate intentions.

    Unfortunately a lot of hybridizers don't really have the passion or the imagination needed to produce the plant similar to what you mentioned..

      Yep, it'll be nice if they get the ideas from us consumers, collectors, influencers.

    The problem with hybridizing is that the parents must be compatible. Several people have attempted to cross spiritus-sanctii with melanochrysum, verrucosum and gloriosum. While all are Philos, the genetics do not seem to be compatible (probably incompatible chromosome counts) and either no seed is produced or it is not viable. Because we haven't mapped the chromosomes of all of the aroids, the only way to produce new hybrids is through trial and error. While some groups of plants are amenable to wide crosses (where chromosome counts differ), aroids do not appear to be one of them. That said, I'd bet my last dollar that it is possible to cross at least one Philo with one Anthurium.

    I think…I think there’s a place for both deliberate crosses to appeal to customers as well as crosses just because the plants bloomed. I say this because if you watch their lives (at least Ecuagenera Fl…idk about Ca) , some of the crosses are bomb and some, you can tell that someone was just d*cking around with plants because they like plants and since yields are so big if you know what you’re doing, they sell them.🤷🏾‍♀️ And I may be wrong, but that’s what it looks like.😅
    I personally like Ecuagenera and other importers for my basics-I think the fact that they don’t seem get too deep into any of the coveted crosses (and I say that lightly since there is so much variation when crossing plants, even if they are the same as what was used for a very saught after hybrid), helps keep the market for certain plants from plummetting.
    But yeah, it looks like the general consensus is that 2024 is the year of crosses/hybrids. Personally, I’m just gonna stay on my “I like what I like” train-if it’s a hybrid? Cool. If it’s some regular sh*t? Cool. I like plants.😅
    Have you considered creating your own deliberate cross? (You may talk about this, but I haven’t finished the video, yet. Oops.😅😭)

    • @AroidDistrict
      @AroidDistrict  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree, there is definitely a place for deliberate crosses, opportune crosses, and even tissue culture mutations. I think it's cool if these companies get ideas for deliberate crosses, from the actual consumer. Rather than throw out a bunch of similar looking crosses that get overlooked lol.
      I don't think I'll be crossing Philos...they don't flower enough and I'm not willing to wake up in the middle of the night with a thermometer to pollinate them 😂.

    Thank you for saying what you did about hybridizing in the beginning! I'm so over seeing sales for crosses that are miles long like ((AxB)x(CxD))x(AxC). Like, what?! I don't know what that's gonna look like nor does it even have any meaning to me at that point. They need to be more intentional, like you said.

    • @addisonmay23
      @addisonmay23 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Also I realize your main point is that they need to think about the characteristics of the plants they're crossing, as opposed to my angst at long crosses in general. I'd be fine with a long list of crosses that clearly have some thought behind them.

    • @AroidDistrict
      @AroidDistrict  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You’re welcome, yeah I agree with you. I guess we can only hope and wish. I’ll def do my part with being intentional about Anthuriums. I don’t like the hype around all these names involved, which is why the only option is to come up with your own name once you created your own “unique” Anthurium.

    Had to do a little google action on this one, but I do wonder (and hope) we get intergeneric hybrids in the houseplant world soon, they do technically exist, even in nature and of course manmade - tangelos are a good example, triticale (wheat x rye), and a plant called Heucherella is apparently a two genus-hybrid as well. It would be cool to see a Hoya/ large leaf Aroid cross one day

    • @AroidDistrict

    For me, when it comes to anthuriums, I am actually sick of hybrids, there are so many plain looking hybrids that people like to promote as special with so many stupid names that noone really cares about. I miss good old pure, mother nature created varieties to be more available, but it is very hard to get them because the market is oversaturated with infinite hybrids.

    • @AroidDistrict
      @AroidDistrict  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I understand. I can’t grow species well, so I’m all for the hybrids. I also figured the species can be left in the wild to “Mother Nature” if we made our own hybrids at home.

    • @ingrida1121
      @ingrida1121 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      nowadays most species are not being taken from the wild, they are being propagated from that plants people already have, that way if the species ever get extinct in the wild, it can be repopulated from private collections @@AroidDistrict

    Be careful taking branches from trees outside and using them as support for your indoor plants. I did that a few years ago and started getting root rot, mold, fungus’s, and other weird issues. I’m positive it was coming from the outdoor branches I was introducing to my collection. Our houseplants don’t have the ability to fight off these diseases like the plants outside could.
