Trent and NIN is in a class by itself. Their album "Pretty Hate Machine" should be in everyone's music library.

Definitely a classic. My first exposure to NiN was when they did the soundtrack for Quake, and I've been a fan ever since.
NIN is classic 90's music. It defies easy classification, but is iconic of the time.

trust me, there is no wrong way to dance this. whatever rocks your boat is the word.
So for those who don't get the meaning of the song. Essentially it's about feeling ashamed of the things we are addicted too. About the things we do that make us feel alive. The album is incredibly sad. Basically about a person falling into a downward spiral. Hurt is basically the cherry on top and talks about a person who is rock bottom and is thinking about ending it all, and wants to change but feels it's too late. Trent said in an interview it's about finding hope when all else is lost. This album is actually a modern day version of pink Floyd's the Wall, which essentially tells a story of a rockstar who is also going through a downward spiral and uses the metaphor of a wall (nail in the coffin) or events in life that made the person isolate himself away from the world. In the end, no one knows if he came out of it or not. Comfortably numb for example is basically about the guy killing the pain with drugs, using a memory of his childhood as a metaphor for how he is feeling every day, which is sick, and miserable and lost. Songfacts is a great place to learn about the song meanings.

Comfortably Numb isn't about that lol. Roger Waters received a sedative/pain killer for stomach issues before going onstage in Philadelphia. He relates that experience to the one he had as a kid.
Could you imagine if Johnny Cash covered this one instead of Hurt?

My cousin converted to Catholicism so she could be married in her fiance's church. He wanted zero input on the wedding plans. She thought it would be fun to walk down the aisle to Closer. She didn't do it, but had more than a few laughs thinking about it.
I love the contrast between Asia getting all wide-eyed and BJ just bopping along to it.

Nope. This song was perfect for its time. Think of the drek that was released in 2004. This would have NEVER seen the light of day in the auto tuned crap era of music that we have been in since about 1996.

One of the best and most fun concerts I ever went to was Nine David Inch Bowie Nails. They did their own sets but then they did a set together. And the… unique sounds of Davis Bowie with NIN all on stage together was amazeballs!
I went to the Hershey Park show in that tour. AMAZING.
I saw that concert in Auburn Hills MI back in either....94 or 95? I was in middle school still lol
The Outside tour was great, especially when you add the opening band, Prick. His/their song, "Animal" is a favorite of mine.
NIN is one of those bands that you can't put them in any genre because they pretty much created their own genre with their unique sound. This song is a vibe, y'all know what kinda vibe I'm talking about😂. This was a great reaction to this song! Appreciate y'all! Peace and love!
Massive NIN fan here, this ones actually not one of my favourites its a bit overplayed but not bad in a club once you've had a few drinks. Still great to see first timers react to it though.

I remember first time I heard this I was around 19-20, my Fake ID era… in a Bar/club, that beat kicked in, the empty dance area, exploded with college girls and once the chorus hit, the older woman jumped up.. it was crazy. But amazing at the same time..

When the guy says "help me become somebody else" and "help me get away from myself", that to me feels way more like someone trying to wear someone else's skin, rather than someone doing anything as romantic as "making love" to someone else. Also, it's entirely egocentric - for example "you get me closer to God" - the title lyric - seems just all about him using this person's body as a tool for self-improvement, rather than any notion of partaking in some consensual affair with two distinct people.
I mean hell, the act itself is written as basely utilitarian - "f*** you like an animal". There's nothing about 'love' here, it's literally fulfilling primal urges.

This song is from the downward spiral. Which is a concept album and best listened from beginning to end cause it tells a story of a man's decent. Great album you should give it a listen sometime even if it's not done for content.
This genre of rock is called Industrial. It was my favorite back in the 90's when it was new. I was in my 20s.
That iconic heartbeat drum beat that really drives the song is actually a sample. It's a distorted sample of the drums from Nightclubbing by Iggy Pop.
I’ve seen a lot of bands. And NIN is up there with the best shows I’ve seen. The show was originally cancelled, and Trent came out on the makeup date and apologized and said he was going to make sure he gave 100%....and he did!
I’m 51. Saw him when I was 19 for the first time when he toured for Pretty Hate Machine. Small club in Tampa. Then saw him two more times when his shows were quite the production and he performed in stadiums. He puts on amazing shows and puts a lot of work into set design. I think his music defines the Gen X generation - full of angst, independence, fierceness, and rawness.

A little fun fact: Trent Reznor, lead singer of NIN, alongside Atticus Ross, worked together on the music for the 2019 TV series Watchmen starring Regina King. They went on to win an Emmy Award for it. I dunno if y'all watched the show or not but check it out if you haven't. You can't miss the music, it's integral to certain scenes/sequences.

For the record, this song is super dark when you hear it in sequence on the album. The album is a concept album that portrays a protagonist's descent into depression, madness, self destruction, and eventually suicide. Every song is a step further along the route. This is the fifth song, after Mr Self Destruct, Piggy, Heresy, and March of the Pigs, each song describing one more facet of his downward spiral. The song right after this is Ruiner.
But the thumping bass and shock lyrics made this song super popular in strip clubs and such at the time, and the song got popular for the wrong reasons....
One of my favorite bands of all time. I still vibe to this song even though it is dark. It is a song that comes from a very dark album which is called, "The Downward Spiral," and it always deserves to be listened to because it is a work of art.

The best moment of any wedding I've been to is my friends wedding when the best man arranged for the DJ to play this song after a series of bland classics that had all the old people already on the dancefloor. Watching them all get into it at first, then try to decide if they should stay up there or go back to their seats was hilarious. It also really pissed off the bride, but in a funny way.

Trent Reznor, the driving force and creator of NIN, is super-creative/artistic and has won awards not only for his alt-rock/industrial music, but also for his work on documentary film soundtracks.
I feel like their signature tune is probably "Head Like a Hole", as that was the first one that got mainstream radio station play (definitely a midnight dance floor banger).
But, they had been played on local Ohio college radio stations for several years before that with Trents first band The Exotic Birds.
He records every track by himself in the studio, and hires a band to tour with him, like PRINCE did, prince usually recorded and played every instrument in the studio
Michael Jackson tried to do the same.

@@IHWKR it's more about the ways damaged people sometimes use sex as a form of emotional escapism and as a coping mechanism. The protagonist of the song (the I) is weaving between being self-loathing and being desperate for the affection of whomever the *you* of the song is.
As for your interpretation and Dahmer reference, I'd argue the content of Big Man With A Gun is closer to what you're describing than Closer is.

This song IS a vibe fo sho! 😝 However most NIN songs are a vibe of some kind. Anytime that I want to go hardcore to a specific vibe... love, sex, hate, angst, depression... really hardcore to it... it's time to turn on NIN.
The video for this is even more shocking that the lyrics! Trent Reznor does some really great movie soundtracks. You should also check out "Head Like a Hole." He is the very epitome of "Industrial Rock." It sounds like it comes from inside a factory.

You guys, this is the first band I saw live lol. In 1993. My mom took me to see them in Columbus, Ohio where I lived most of my life. Marilyn Manson opened for them. I was 13. It was amazing.
I saw them in concert when they put on a million dollar light show and it was easily one of the coolest things I have ever seen. Before we went my friend heard they liked to leave Easter eggs hidden around the venue. He ended up noticing a flash drive when he went to the bathroom. It had their new album on it as well as a bunch of unreleased music of theirs that was pretty awesome.
Y’all definitely need to explore more NIN. A couple of my favorites are “Reptile” and “Only.” 🔥

This was the first album, cassette tape, that I bought for myself! Bought every NineInchNails album since, danced to this song in every goth club. Trent Reznor writes songs about everything, raunchy, ecstatic, grieving, he does it all!
Sanctified is another good song, and it'll give you that bedroom vibe, without the shock value as closer, sanctified is song to groove to while doing the deed.

My all time favorite concert to watch on TH-cam is NIN Tension 2013 in Los Angeles. Amazing.
Haha this song was a right of passage when I was a kid. I still remember going on a school field trip in 6th grade and sitting on the bus. My friend Becky had the discman with the *contraband* and my friend Julie solemnly took off the headphones after she finished listening and lowered them over my ears and then they watched my face as the song played, all of our eyes bugged out of our heads. Good memories.

I have a copy of The Downward Spiral on SACD.. Trent's work mixed in 5.1 surround is a great experience because of the playful density of his composition.
Reznor is in pain. Brilliant song writing. I saw NIN once when they opened for David Bowie. The best part of that particular concert was when Bowie came on stage and sang with NIN. I think for 5-6 songs. They went back and forth between a Bowie song and a NIN song. Slowly the NIN band members left the stage while Bowie's musicians entered ... just a very cool experience. Apparently, Reznor is a huge fan of Bowie's - many modern-day artists seem to also be influenced by Bowie.

Trent Reznor is a musical genius and has released a huge amount music as/with the band Nine Inch Nails not to mention he's been a composer or contributor to countless soundtracks on movies and TV shows and also has written for or worked with hundreds of other artists. He did this all while demanding the recording labels not interfere with his creations. Even early on in his career he refused to sign a contract with a label that allowed them any say so in what happens in the creation of the music, only agreeing to them being able to remove any song or songs they deemed inappropriate for release from under their label, and as you can see they weren't to strict. Lol.
