A friend and I sang this at Karaoke one time. We were surprised to see it available as an option. Suffice to say the Karaoke DJ guy was also very surprised when we hit the chorus. I've never seen anyone move so fast to turn off a mic.

Trent Reznor was Manson's vocal coach and was credited producer for Manson's albums "Portrait of an American Family", "Smells Like Children", and "Antichrist Superstar."

@@virkon3208 Yes, two of those albums were at the very start of his career where they barely got airtime due to the times and Satanic panic going on in the early 90's. Does not take from the fact that they were good albums.
@@Desu-Desu-Chan-San whether or not any of his albums are good or not is subjective to an individual's personal taste and doesn't necessarily have any correlation with commercial success. My intention was to only share quantifiable, tangible, objective information.
Flash forward to now: Trent Reznor now has an Emmy, two Golden Globes, three Grammys and a Oscar for his work.
He just needs that damn Broadway play musical to happen. Reznor/Miranda. Make it happen. Get our boy his EGOT.

Absolutely. Sex is what this song is. Thats what makes this song groundbreaking. Trent perfectly encapsulates that grimey and dark lust.
It's interesting you mention Marilyn Manson since Trent Reznor was the one who discovered Marilyn Manson and put him/the band on the map. They were really close friends for awhile too until they had a nasty falling out. I'm so glad too see you doing a NIN song on the channel and I hope it inspires a more thorough deep dive from their industrial/synth era to their more mature sound of recent years. Highly recommend Deep, We're In This Together, Something I Can Never Have, Terrible Lie, Down In It, March of the Pigs, Head Like A Hole, Sanctified, Happiness in Slavery... ok I'm gonna stop myself cuz this list would be way too long if I didn't. Also, since you like songs that blur genres there's a song on their more mature sounding Hesitation Marks album from 2013 called "While I'm Still Here" and it's an awesome song that didn't get a lot of recognition that features Lindsey Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac on guitar.
Funny you mentioned appreciating the more mature sound which kinda start from The Fragile but most song you recommended are from the first 3 albums.
Can't blame you for that! I still believe that Pretty Hate Machine is Trent's masterpiece. And "Deep" what ashame it's not part of an official album, I always recommend that song for someone who start getting into the band. Oh and also the cover of Joy Division's Dead Soul

Loved this reaction.... that you addressed the sexuality of it was relatable - you're, I think, only the second or third reactor I’ve seen state so even if their reaction made it clear vs their records - AND didn’t act as though there was some massive clash between the ideas of the animalistic desire and feeling “closer to God” through it was highly refreshing, your attention to detail and notes/comments on production, composition quality, and genre combination was great, great to hear. This was a wonderful reaction; An awesome departure from the standard Closer response.
Didn’t read other comments yet, so please excuse if redundant, but Reznor found and made Manson noticed by popular culture. He produced their early work to, especially heavy working together during this era when Reznor was working on The Downward Spiral and Manson creating Antichrist Superstar.
Having loved both artists during those years I listened to a Lot of their work... but earlier this year after a break from them of quite some time, especially Manson, on registering to AS album I realized it could’ve easily been a second disc of The Downward Spiral musically. Reznor could’ve written and released it and I suspect his influence on its final form was.... more than just a few suggestions in production work, to put it lightly. Manson's vocals and personal angle to it is in there, of course, making the album very his in delivery... but strip his vocals and the most minor tweaks to the music and you can hear Reznor's composition style, layering habits, song structuring, discordants, etc. that tie right into those of The Downward Spiral's... and that being the last album of Manson's Reznor worked closely on, Manson's style took a massive swing in musical style (which I still enjoyed at the time, but the difference is highly noticeable).

My favorite part of this song is that ever-present drumbeat that maintains the rhythm of a pounding heart. Brilliant!!
For what it's worth, a connection was made in this video that I'd never managed on my own: that between post-Genesis Peter Gabriel and NIN (and, to that extent, other NIN-like bands).
Admittedly, I came from the other direction, finding Gabriel's solo albums years after NIN, but the sudden clarity of the relationship between the two is striking and I'm amazed that, after 15 years counting each among my favourite artists, it took someone else to draw the line between them.

All of Twitch was a big influence.
It isn't as if Uncle Al himself didn't work with Trent, or have Trent go on tour with Ministry or Revco on guitar on a tour or two... where there was smoke, there was fire. And Trent was plenty more experimental eventually than Al could have ever dreamed of. Al has become a sideshow. Spare me the purist bullshit. Honestly, DM with Alan Wilder were more experimental than Ministry ever were, Al just knew how to put on some scary shit and some distortion.
Trent started in the mid 80's playing keyboards in synthpop bands, that was where he got the influences for NIN's synth-heavy Industrial Rock. After he dropped out of college he started working as an assistant and janitor at a studio, that was where he learned all his recording and producing skills. One day he asked the studio owner if he could use it in the off times to work on his material, to which he said yes, and the rest is history. : )

Additionally, this song has a very dark message and that's all I will say.
Trent acknowledged in recent years that Atticus Ross is an official member of NIN.
But yeah for the most part of the NIN library it was all Reznor with full control over the decision of the band.

I've watched so many music teachers, vocal teachers, etc. with their piano, and they will press a key or two every so often to get the pitch of the song (which is understandable, makes sense), but I love the little showcases you put on for us to enjoy and show your talent on top of awesome reactions. :)

Downward spiral was recorded in the "Tate house" and Trent named his studio "Le Pig".
He had some issues back then, which can be heard on the album.

Oh, there is a "live" version of one of the songs on this album "The Becoming (still)" which I have always liked alot.
And if you want raw, look into Nine Inch Nails' forever banned "Broken Movie". It is out there. I've seen it once and have not yet had any reason to watch it again.
It circuled around in bad VHS "copy-of-a-copy" versions in the 90's but mysteriously a DVD quality version was leaked in to the p2p networks in early 2000's.
Few years back Trent uploaded to the official Nine Inch Nails TH-cam chanel a song from "Broken Movie" called "Happiness in Slavery".
It was not available for long.
But it has been on NIN Vimeo channel since 2009, the uncencored version I mean.

This is my favorite song, and you hit on why--it's just so painfully honest and authentic, which is rare in commercial music. I can't believe Trent Reznor managed to get this out into the mainstream--that's pretty incredible, too. I dont like the video that much because its abridged (what kind of director's cut is that? ) I love the last minute or so of electronic music in the original track, and to me no part of it is expendable.

The downward spiral album is an experience and I recommend listening to it in full in your own time (I'd watch that video but I'm not sure how popular it would be). Also I think you would get a kick out of "the wretched" by NIN. Blends guitar, piano and drum machines in such an awesome way

I've loved watching Trent going from Down in it through to this stuff through to Starfunkers & all his movie scores as well as How To Destroy Angels (the space between us is amazing song with his wife). When I saw them he really was an absolute gem to watch on stage
funny story ab NIN-
so i’m a highschool freshman girl but nine inch nails has been one of my favorite bands for years (in secret, lol)
so a few months ago i was in hot topic and i found a NIN shirt on clearance for 10$!! so i was fuckin ecstatic, like jumping up and down and everything. so i bought it, put it on, and then went back to my dads car.
keep in mind, my dad was big in the british grunge scene in the early 90’s and of course this was a huge song so he had heard it and some of their other stuff, too. (not that i knew any of that, lol)
so i got into his car and there’s a moment of just pure silence and shock when he sees my shirt. i was like “bro you aight?” and in the smallest voice i’ve ever heard him he said “...you know nine inch nails??” and i was like “yOU KNOW NINE INCH NAILS???” and he was like “DO YOU KNOW WHAT THEIR FUCKING LYRICS ARE” and it was so awkward lmao

You know, I just saw another NIN reaction video, and the youtuber said the exact same thing, and it's something I've been saying since forever. I believe Trent shares sensibilities with Peter Gabriel, BIG TIME. So refreshing to find others that feel the same. Loved your takes on this. I say it everywhere I post for NIN-related video: they have been the soundtrack to my life since forever.

Less Peter Gabriel and more Gary Numan was his driving influence (although Reznor did a Remix for Gabriel). Numan was in a self described creative slump and was listening to Nine Inch Nails saw what he always wanted to do was being done by Reznor and it got him out of the rut. He later found out that Reznor was listening to Telekon every morning making the The Downward Spiral and was the driving influence on the Pretty Hate Machine debut.
