    Growing up in the 80s and 90s we all knew someone like this. They were usually wealthy and thought they could fit in with the street kids by flashing the cash. While most Beastie boys fans would be stealing a Volkswagon logo from a car, to put on a chain around their neck, they just buy one from a dealer. Great reaction all the best guys!

    I grew up in a small town. We had a high school full of dudes dressed like the character in this video. They would say they were Crips or Bloods, but really they would just all go over to Tanners house and stay all night playing video games and trying to learn the C-walk. They would imitate the gangsta rap stars of the 90s, but they would over-exaggerate their walk and their talk. To the point it was culturally offensive. It all boiled down to the fact that they idolized the rappers of the day, and they wanted to be a part of that culture so bad that they made fools of themselves. I've lived in the city for years now, and that type of thing doesn't happen like that here. Someone who is really from the streets would knock their head straight for them before it got that far.
    A new era of wanna-bes like the guy in the video have spawned from the Chicago drill scene. People that aren't even from here are trying to act like them. Brent from Wichita Kansas now thinks he can survive the streets of Chicago. It's crazy.

      I think this song is more specifically about the late '90s-early 2000s (lots of stylistic parody in the video of the stuff the then-"Puff Daddy" Sean Combs was putting out), but, yeah, as long as there's been "cool", there's been poseurs trying to buy their way in. The '80s version might be faux-"punks" coming from the suburbs to hang downtown in their $800 pre-ripped designer clothes, made to look like the DIY repairs on thrift-shop finds that actual punks wore because it was all they could afford/they wanted to make an anti-consumerist statement.

    • @michaelccozens
      @michaelccozens 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, it's not even the "adopting other cultures" thing so much as it is how lazily people go about it. It'd be like wearing one of those Jewish yarmulkes because you thought it looked cool. Taking other people's symbols and wearing them to get attention without even trying to understand why they're important is an act of erasure, because it separates the symbol from the meaning given to it by its creators without so much as a "by-your-leave".
      Imagine you created a painting with great personal meaning to you, and some dickhead thought it was pretty so they started selling it as decoration on tat, without even giving you a heads-up. You'd be pissed, and you'd have every right to be so.

    I think the song is about people forcing their way into group by emulating them instead of approaching them as people, in this case the protagonist acts as how he perceives black people act to fit in, instead of just making friends, that happen to be black, and accepting the differences that make us the same.

    I totally agree with Asia on people being fly in their own way but there definitely seemed to be an epidemic of white guy wannabes when I was in high school back in the 90s. This song is for them 😂 It seemed when white people (often wealthy white people) dressed and acted a certain type of way, they were seen as wannabes. Especially if they were like the guy in the video and REALLY didn’t get it right. At least it was that way in my town. You gotta remember this was still 2 years before anyone (well, besides Metro Detroit) had ever heard of Slim Shady/Eminem and I remember when he hit the scene, he was definitely not immediately liked for what he was doing. A LOT of people thought he was a wannabe in the beginning. Edit: And Vanilla Ice wasn’t cool back then, he was more of a punchline. I’m glad that’s changed as the years have passed because we all know “Ice, Ice Baby” is 🔥

  • @michaelccozens
    @michaelccozens 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think it's not so much that white people can't be "fly" or whatever, as it is making fun of those people who superficially adopt the symbols of a cultural group without even trying to understand what they mean and why they're important. It'd be like some Christian kid wearing a yarmulke because they thought it looked cool. It's kinda saying the same thing Asia is; you can be cool as whatever you are, but you have to be true to yourself. That fake shit fools nobody.
    A particular focus of mockery in this song, I think, is rich people cosplaying as "poor" for street cred (I see you and that mansion you grew up in, "Kid Rock"). As Pulp put it, "everybody hates a tourist". It's also about people trying to buy their way into a culture, rather than approaching it in good-faith, mostly because they're too lazy to actually put-in the effort or too privileged to attempt to grasp the reality of other people's social contexts, since doing so would require recognizing said privilege. Everyone also hates that rich-kid "I can buy and sell you" shit.

    Next Offspring song definitely needs to be "Why Don't You Get A Job?", featuring a cameo by the "Pretty Fly For A White Guy" actor 😅
    By the way, the lead singer of the Offspring, Dexter Holland, is also a Doctor. He earned his PhD in Molecular Biology in 2017, after having suspended his studies when the band hit the mainstream.

    Homeboy has a cameo in another video for their song 'Why Don’t You Get a Job?' (which is also very hilarious). The lead singer is actually very very smart. He was valedictorian of his class & has a Ph.D. in molecular biology. He even wrote his thesis on mRNA technology back in 2013--way before the covid vaccines were using it.

    Way back in the hippy days, there were rich kids slumming and being 'flower children.' The poor kids hated them.
    My husband said that they just wanted to experience how the other half lived,
    I said that the other half couldn't write to their rich daddies for money, when they needed to.

    I think by the time this video came out the whole "gangsta rap" thing had gone so far that it had become a caricature of itself. It had its time and its place and was important in its historical context. But its authenticity began to fade with time. Pretty hard to take rap lyrics about "gangsta" street life when you're recording in a high-tech studio built into your multi-million dollar mansion. And the White kids? Oh, man. When it came to White kids from the suburbs trying to emulate the life style and attitude of what they perceived as "hip" Black "street culture, they just didn't realize they were embarrassing themselves. They didn't get that being "hip" or "cool" isn't about trying to "fit in" and be someone or something that you're not. Being truly hip or really cool is when you just be who and what you are. Be the best "You" that you can be regardless of your ethnicity or the color of your skin or the economic status that you happen to be in. In the end, being an authentic "You" is what's really gonna matter. But hey, I should talk. I just turned 76 and I'm still struggling with my "authenticity". ;-)

    Great tune, rocks out. The funny part is that he's a wannabe and he just doesn't get it. Hilarious video set to a catchy rock tune. "Get a Job" is another funny video and awesome tune from the Offspring that you'll love. And one of my favourites is "Keep 'Em Separated". Great band with a sense of humour for sure.
