I think this song is more specifically about the late '90s-early 2000s (lots of stylistic parody in the video of the stuff the then-"Puff Daddy" Sean Combs was putting out), but, yeah, as long as there's been "cool", there's been poseurs trying to buy their way in. The '80s version might be faux-"punks" coming from the suburbs to hang downtown in their $800 pre-ripped designer clothes, made to look like the DIY repairs on thrift-shop finds that actual punks wore because it was all they could afford/they wanted to make an anti-consumerist statement.

I grew up in a small town. We had a high school full of dudes dressed like the character in this video. They would say they were Crips or Bloods, but really they would just all go over to Tanners house and stay all night playing video games and trying to learn the C-walk. They would imitate the gangsta rap stars of the 90s, but they would over-exaggerate their walk and their talk. To the point it was culturally offensive. It all boiled down to the fact that they idolized the rappers of the day, and they wanted to be a part of that culture so bad that they made fools of themselves. I've lived in the city for years now, and that type of thing doesn't happen like that here. Someone who is really from the streets would knock their head straight for them before it got that far.
A new era of wanna-bes like the guy in the video have spawned from the Chicago drill scene. People that aren't even from here are trying to act like them. Brent from Wichita Kansas now thinks he can survive the streets of Chicago. It's crazy.

Yeah, it's not even the "adopting other cultures" thing so much as it is how lazily people go about it. It'd be like wearing one of those Jewish yarmulkes because you thought it looked cool. Taking other people's symbols and wearing them to get attention without even trying to understand why they're important is an act of erasure, because it separates the symbol from the meaning given to it by its creators without so much as a "by-your-leave".
Imagine you created a painting with great personal meaning to you, and some dickhead thought it was pretty so they started selling it as decoration on tat, without even giving you a heads-up. You'd be pissed, and you'd have every right to be so.

He drove like hell thru the night while he first started the motor, then waited till the album's spoken word introduction was over and started driving right when Nitro as the first song was about to start. Man, i loved that right from the start, because he kept on playing that album 'Smash', and continuing the second song 'bad habbit' (which suited most appropriately the hell like driving) got me on knees. Dexter Holland, the band’s front man, went to my high school!(He graduated years before I got there, though. He also grew up down the street from one of my Facebook friends.)

One thing I love about this channel is the video thumbnails are usually just you guys smiling and enjoying the music. So many other reaction channel hosts have these wild expressions on their faces like the just saw Jesus doing a harmonica solo or something.

Great response- I still can't help laughing and singing along to this.
I went to their concert tour for this album in...99 I think... and they had the ACTOR IN THIS VIDEO come out on stage and pantomime his character during the song LOL!
These guys are talented, fun, smart lyrics, great social commentary that was/is extremely accurate.
And I was old enough then to appreciate that tongue in cheek dragging of toxic norms while championing the independent minded kids in a subtle way... considering I took my 15 and 11 year olds to the concert and I was no teen mom, LOL.
Kept having to steal back my Offspring CDs from my girls too... Dexter signed that one "To the cute cool Mom- call me. Dex" (🙀😹😹😹) when my youngest asked him well after the show ended-
I was too busy trying to corral my semi-adopted 17 year old skater boy "son" out of the clutches packs of females and drag him home with us to even look at it until safely in the car... while trying to figure out why my brain was so iffy... after sitting high up at inside seats in the college auditorium. Yup, idiot me was stoned by accident 🤦😹

Sony Music/Columbia put this out in 1998, back the days when you went to Tower Records to get the new jams or buy some concert tickets. This was filmed in Burbank and Van Nuys, CA. I like it because races are actually quite separated in Los Angeles / San Fernando Valley, so this video makes me feel a genuine sense of camaraderie that's real to me. I'm from L.A. and people are mostly loving, friendly and accepting. This video makes me 😊 smile

I'm really digging your humisic approach! I am colourblind and so are you guys, that's how the world should work! Ignore colour and just se the person behind it, that's the way to do it. Love you guys for your universial and mature perspectiv on things! Love from Stockholm, Sweden😊

I'd heard that much of the audience for '90s rap was 13 year old White boys, in baggy pants and shades.

With the rise of gangster rap in the '90s came the rise of overcompensating, white suburban dudes ("wiggers"). It was a great white-on-white insult back in the day.

Offspring is well worth diving into deeper! One of their most sobering songs…. The Kids Aren’t Alright.

Didn't the Offspring go to prison a for a crime they didn't commit. They promptly escaped to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune.

I think the song is about people forcing their way into group by emulating them instead of approaching them as people, in this case the protagonist acts as how he perceives black people act to fit in, instead of just making friends, that happen to be black, and accepting the differences that make us the same.
