Well. Since my Thumbdrives won't let me do that anymore, but it took me a while to use my existing SSD Drive to get it to detect. You, sir get a like and a kudos for helping this virtual cop continue on with his TH-cam career and his crusade to help keep gamers safe.

hey great video i wanted to ask you how come when i play 4k hdr on my samsung tv ona xbox series x the game is flawless but when i try to record and make content on a usb external ssd when i run back the video on my computer the video is pixelated and has tearing and stuttering

I am not sure about this because I no longer have any 1080p monitors. But, my guess is... if the option is recording setting is available to record in 4K, you should be good. Please let me know if it works.

I set my thumb usb as capture location but can't view content I created on it with the same console after switching to inernhal storage as capture location then back to external usb as capture location, furthermore you can't seem to set pictures as desktop background on the console, unless its only on internal storage and captured to internal storage.

That is an excellent question... I am not sure. My guess is there is a way to do it. But, the files will be huge if 4K and longer then a few minutes.

I know I’m super late and you probably won’t respond but I’d really like to look into long time recordings, like not recording recent gameplay but from starting a recording to ending a recording, how far can I max that time. I know yours said one hour but is there any way to make it longer?
I did use a thumb drive i have a portable 2 TB Drive plugged into the USB port in the back of my Series X ,
The only problem that i am having is cannot here my voice on my in game video's as i only pre-records my video's they records perfectly , just cannot here my voice nor my party got lots of sound like driving a motorcycle of a truck but voice over.

Hi, I did everything you did in this video (unfortunately prior before watching, so it took me some time) - I can record to my external SSD, in 4K, up to an hour, but why can’t I record in HDR? I clicked the option 4K HDR, but there is no HDR in the video, colors are very pale and not according to the actual gameplay?
You have to be sure monitor is in HDR also. If not synced in HDR… image with look very washed out.

I would think so... but, I can not confirm it.
A storage drive is for storage and should not be a factor for recordings... and in MENU, you select the drive for recordings. So, my guess is... You should be able to use both for separate functions. Let me know if there is an issue.
Everything works up to the last point in the capture and share section. It only give me the option for internal storage. Nothing shows up for the usb. Have you heard of this issue? Thanks for your quick response. 👍🏻💯

I hooked up series x to my 4k tv which has gaming mode with hdr option, when I record in 4k they don't look good at all, what I might be doing wrong?
If the color looks all wash out… that is hdr…. For you to see it in all color, you must set monitor for hdr also… I usually record in regular mode as it is a pain to convert for videos.

Most USB cards come formatted in exFAT. So, yes you will need a PC to format to NTFS. On Mac, you will need additional software as it is not natively supported.
Yo whenever I hit start recording it doesn't actually do anything. If you open the menu again just just says "start recording" again. Any ideas?

You'll need a usb extender cord that has multiple usb
When it asks what you want to use the storage device for could you select games and apps instead of media as a cheap alternative to one of those seagate expansion cards that cost a kidney.
Thank for the video. Please tel me if i buy a USB stick 3.2 128 giga and make settings to save all my screen shots there will be xbox delete them automatically from time to time because in internal drive after 3 days half of my screen shots and videos are deleted automatically without a warning...
Not sure why that is happening... Possibly running out of data and it is erasing oldest files in favor of new ones. 128GB is kind of small, especially if recording video.
What is the easiest way to add video of yourself recording and commenting on game play?
Have got the same G storage as you but it only records in 2 minute clips I have done everything on here and formatted it to NFTS and when I plug it into my comp it says that the storage is only 3.80gb (it is 500gb) any help would be much appreciated 😀
What has happened is... the Hard drive was formatted to another format. So, when you attempted format to NFTS... It is only formatting part of it and adding a partition. And, leaving other format also. It is creating an addition PARTITION. The XBOX is seeing the other partition and format with 3.8gb and not recognizing the NTFS. I had the same issue with another drive. To fix... You will need to use a PC and find a video on how to completely wipe drive and remove all partitions. Then you should be able to format the full amount to NTFS. It kind of a pain to do... but it will fix problem. Good luck.

As long as USB 2.1 no difference. Just depends on how much memory you need.

What's the average file size of a 1080p 60fps 1 hour recording? Will 256GB usb 3.1 be enough for let's say two hours of 60fps gameplay or should I get at least 1TB?

1 hour is less than 1-2 gb based on the game
Okay but how long can u go back and record if u don't start recording ahead of time with the flash drive? Still 1 min for 1080 or do u now get additional time to record backwards in time with the drive. Watches like 5 videos none of u guys show the settings in the preferences after u change it
The extended record mode only works if you hit record in advance.

Maybe someone can answer this, but my drive is USB 3.2, formatted as NTFS and 64 gig. I know the video says 128 is required, but on the Xbox, it says that's needed for game storage. It doesn't say that's needed for game capture. Is that the reason my Xbox isn't picking it up at all? PS: It's brand new
Yes. I would guess that is problem. Also, be sure using major brand like sandisk, kingston, lexar, sony, etc. cheap brands often overstate specs.

What happens if you accidentally select format for games and apps can you change it back to format for media?
You need to uninstall the games and connect it to a PC. The hard drive has to be formatted to use NTFS with media. Then, you can connect it back to the Xbox and select media.
For some reason my external drive doesn’t show up under Storage Devices. I’ve tried multiple SSD’s, different formatting settings etc. and nothing shows up other than the internal storage. Really annoying, no idea what I’m doing wrong…
1st. Need usb 3.0 or more or doesn’t work
2nd. Must be 128gb or higher
3rd. Format in NTFS format. If drive originally formatted in something else… have to erase partitions and re-format in NTFS, or it reads original format first.

I am using iMac and it cannot read NTFS even cannot format I can do HFS plus does not work works only with iPhone and Mac I managed to install windows on my mac because windows behaves better with my xbox the box does not include a driver cd
Mac does not natively support NTFS, but Windows does. Use a friends computer.

I tried recording using the 4K HDR option. The footage looked super washed out in Premiere pro. However, when I view the file in VLC player, it looks perfectly fine. Anyone experience this?
Must turn on HDR in Premiere Pro or add a LUT. HDR mode records in footage in that weird washed out look. All info is there… needs to have HDR on to process it.
I don't use 4K since my TV isn't capable of that. But 1080p is just as good since the Series X has some amazing framerates on older XBox One Games.

4K for 30 min will need approximately 32gb… the cost to bump up to 64gb should not be that much more…
I would buy a name brand like Sandisk, Kingston, PNY, Sony, etc.
I Suggest USB 3.1 64 or 128gb. That will leave extra space.
hi, I followed the whole video, I did all the regular steps, the xbox recognizes the external memory well and I put media... but when I go to the acquisition settings it doesn't give me external memory but only the internal one... can you help me? Thank you
Did you format on pc or mac? Did you re-format or put on fresh one? Xbox is very finicky about format. I suggest to use a pc, erase all formats and partitions. Then fresh install ntfs format. If there is existing format or partition. It always runs to the 1st one. Good luck.

The video is good. However, you don't need to connect a USB stick to make screen recordings for recordings under 4 minutes. It's only necessary when the recording exceeds 4 minutes.

I just got the 2 tb version and was trying to look it up. It seems the device if formatted will only accept media (pictures, music and videos) and it comes as games and apps only. You would have to use a pc to format it. Now I gotta buy another accessory specifically for videos

Ive had some issues where it says its recording and then it doesnt and the footage is an unsupported file, is there a way that i can get a screen overlay so i can visably see im recording?
I got the same issue and every time when I try with a new drive same issue will happen over and over after a while for no reason, there is no answer for this on TH-cam, all the videos are the same teaching you how to record with external drive up to 1h, but no one really knows how to fix the issue, I wonder if they've tried themselves for 1h or they really play games at all? you know what I mean.

@@TheCreativeBuilder97 so i tried again with my PC m.2 ssd write speed 7400m/s and so far no issues of any sorts, not sure if it was the written speed caused the problem.
@@dimcamus6454 since the April Xbox update this issue occurs, I’ve had to re film videos multiple times, I plug the usb into my laptop, delete everything off it and record only 1 videos, upload to my laptop and delete off the usb, rinse and repeat, so far I’ve had less issue but it’s not a total fix

when recording up to an hour i noticed my audio is coming in beofre the video even renders that animation or whatever happens to que the audio. Do you know how this can be fixed im using a 3.0 flashdrive with 256gb of storage should I use a ssd to fix this issue ?
Definitely need USB 3.1 on USB Stick or SSD. The audio issue is created by lag as it can not record fast enough. Also, be sure to get a quality drive or USB Stick... these are not all the same. Need very to get smooth recordings. I list some I description of video. Good Luck!

It’s an Xbox capture issue. Many people are having this issue. Xbox is not acknowledging it or doing anything to fix it. The issue is causing audio delays & sometimes even no sound to be recorded with the clip.

I set mines to media and went to storage and now it wont show up and it worked before i changed it to media idk what to do now cant find anything the helps me
Here is what happened… when you switched to media, it add another partition and your xbox is seeing it. Solution: removed all partitions and re-format.
@@tr3nDmaker i figured it out i was trying to format it on a chrome book but i used a different laptop and my ssd didnt pop ip i looked up how to get my ssd to pop up in files and then it let me set my ntfs and i formatted it and i was good

Using a pc, remove all partitions and reformat to NTFS. Be sure nothing on drive that is important as it all will be erased.
Xbox is very sensitive to partitions. If another format in drive it picks it up first.

Mac does not recognize NTFS, unless you have an add-on. Try on PC.

Yes. It will record up to 1 hour or less.

So if I only brought the 1TB ssd card I can't record pass 1min? Why did Microsoft make this so hard. When on playstation (wack console) just hit the share button and you can record 10min-1hour easy

Xbox is super finicky about format. If different format originally on usb… it will not acknowledge new format.
Many thanks for the no nonsense tutorial. One thing to add that I did. Is I named my drive Xbox Captures. Doing so, my drive did not appear in the capture settings tab. Reconnected it to my PC and named it something and it appeared after reconnecting it to the console.
I did everything here and it still won’t let me record for an hour. It’s not an issue with this video, it’s an issue with Xbox. Every day I get closer to buying a PlayStation and tossing that thing in a dumpster. Exclusives are supposedly gonna go to PlayStation anyway

I faced the same issue. I've xbox one s. Am using Kingston 3.2 pendrive. I just updated my xbox and formatted the usb to ntfs format. And it worked fine.
