I remember that the Xbox 360 250 gb hard drive was something you had to grab vs the 1TB where you just need 2 fingers to hold,it’s crazy how advanced technology has become.
It somewhat slowed compared to the 00s which was ridculas to try & play catch up. I remember having to get that device to transfer stuff over from the OG 360 to the S 360, only to realise it was a one time use.
To a person like me who lives in Latin America, due to the prices, The HDD is a better deal, I don't mind waiting a little bit longer to transfer back my games.

Working at an internet cafe this is good to hear that there's really no issues to have our backwards compatible games literally working right out the gate. We've been rocking 4tb Externals for a while now and would like to keep rocking those for the backwards compatible titles.

Just for info. For storage purposes and to play non load intensive games get a External HDD, either a standalone device or better an External HDD cage ($20 - $40 depending on brand) and a 2 TB HDD ($50 - $70) and you are set for a good time.
Eh...with a decent internet connection, downloading the game will be the same as transferring it...so I want an external drive that I can play games off of, which is an SSD.
I went with the 1TB Seagate expansion card and the 2TB Seagate Barracuda Fast External SSD . I got a really good deal on the external ssd during cyberweek. The barracuda fast matches the aesthetic of the series x perfectly, it even has the same glowing green light when powered on.
After watching this video i purchased the Samsung T5 SSD for 120$ and I have no regrets. Was able to slap huge games on it and quick resume still works. Games like Apex, Overwatch and Call of Duty Warzone run flawlessly on the external SSD. I've downloaded everything I want and still have over 600gigs left. I feel like i have a series X now. Great value.
That’s what I am thinking. I can get a 4TB external hard drive and store all of my series X games on there. When I want to play them I can move them over and when I am done playing then move them back and move something else over.

@@samecardifferentday6015 You can keep any game in the HDD. But if the game you want to download back is no longer in the game pass, it is gone forever unless you buy it.
I look at it this way. If you've already got a USB drive use it. If you don't and you need to buy one, might as well just go with the seagate even if it costs more. Then you don't ever have to worry about transferring.
I think this would work best: Play Original Xbox and Xbox 360 Games from the external hard drive (if you have one already) Games that are not optimised for Series X or S play them on the external hard drive also Series X or S optimised games, play them on internal and maybe some Xbox One unoptimized games as well
External SSD isn't worth it in my opinion. It's not that much cheaper than the official expansion card and you can't play Series X|S games on it. I'd rather use an external HDD for old games, then save up for a proper SDD card.
Depends on the country. In Australia the new SX/SS SSD is $350 haha. Where as I can buy an external SSD like the one he used here (Samsung T5) 1TB for $120. It's a no brainer for me!

Given what I saw of the teardown of the Xbox expansion storage, I bet there will be a third party expansion storage that is not the Seagate storage within the first 6 months of launch. Within a year there will be an enclosure that work with specific NVMe drives. Prices will be more competitive than people think.
Pretty concerned about what the reliability of these would be. I'd say I definitely trust Microsoft to replace faulty SSD's (I'd look I to it before buying rather than assuming of course) and I trust their quality overall. Third parties I'd be pretty unsure of

You see making a SSD card that transfers data at 2.4gbps won't be cheap. That's why you insert the Seagate one in to match those speeds but Microsoft might brick 3rd parties. I think that's why Sony hasn't released their own yet because how can they make an external SSD run at 6.4gbps. Theres videos on the ps5 completely dying when connecting an external SSD, even an HDD
@@mmm.3839 - I think the HDD is simply scare mongering or relates to an individual 'bad unit' as opposed to anything else. A mechanical drive does not have access to the lower level API/key architecture of the PS5, in the same way that a HDD does not have access to the velocity architecture on the Xbox Series X/S. That's why no game designed for either console can run off a HDD and why such a drive is only for backward compatible games, or in the case of the Xbox Series X/S for storing a next gen game. An SSD is the same situation. With the Xbox Series X/S, it can ONLY be used to store next gen games, NOT play them, or play backward compatible titles. On the PS5 an SSD can ONLY be used to play backward compatible titles. No SSD can be connected to the internal port on the playstation right now, they have disabled the port, and it will only be made functional at a latter date via updated firmware once Sony have given the public their white list of acceptable SSD solutions. With the Xbox Series X/S of course the ONLY solution for playing next gen titles is the branded Seagate 1TB card.
I bought the Seagate 1TB SSD Expansion card week ago, for both my Series S and Series X I haven't opened the expansion card yet. I will when I need it, but I ordered it from best buy at $238 * I opened it finally and it's great *

Same for me. I got a 2tb Seagate external hard drive that I use for older games and keep my newer games that I play frequently on the internal drive. I honestly don't mind the load times
I have both a Series X and a PS5 and I gotta say, Sony’s solution for adding storage is way better! Super easy to pop the cover over and throw an M.2 SSD in the expansion bay. And you can find way better deals on those SSDs than the Seagate cards which are literally the only option for storage expansion that can run Series X/S games. I have a Seagate 4TB hard drive I use to store older games and for cold storage of new games if needed. Think I’m gonna eventually get an external SSD though for the faster load and transfer times.
I taught the hdd was slower definitely getting a 2tb hdd, i rather wait 10 minutes than redownloading a full game for over 4 hours. Thanks for the video
We went from cartridges/memory cards, to disks, to digital and now back to memory cards Going to wing it with my old 8tb hdd.. i have no problem swapping games back and forth unto the internal xbox storage, beats uninstalling and redownloading games..

I am literally waiting for FedEx to deliver my X|S so I can plug this in, and miss 0 beats. You 'can' transfer these games to the internal for the speedy loads though, which is cool.

I'll manage with 800GB internal for now. That 1tb Seagate SSD for Xbox X|S is 299 CAD. That price will drop as the cost to manufacturer goes down in the future. 100-150 CAD will be a good price in the future.
The Seagate Expansion card is worth the money just for the huge read/write speeds alone... Plus once the main SERIES S/X buying spree is over they'll start to sit on shelves and the prices will drop by £10-30, depending on retailers & special offers, to get them moving again...
It just seems ridiculous to me that I need to pay $200 to get 1 TB of storage for X/S games to still work without having to move stuff around, and 1 TB isn't even a lot, it would already be filled up with the few games I had to delete already to stay within my current 1 TB internal storage on the X. It's all BS
I’m using two Samsung 870 EVO 4TB SSD’s in external cases as my external storage. It means I can use those for ONE, 360 & OG games on those & get SSD speeds, and save the main SSD for Series X enhanced games.

It comes with about 350 gigs usable I think can’t remember, and I put about 3 Xbox series X/S games, but if they are older, would be less memory. The new games take up about a 100 gigs. Idk why. Currently with the hard drive tho. I moved all the older games to the WD hard drive and have about 6 series X/S games
most expensive gen ever, gives pc's a run for it's money. I don't want a million games I own enough... So I will just want 1 to 8 and play and finish them and move on. Gamepass is the way to go. For older stuff use old hdd.

I built my pc in 2014. Upgraded the cpu and gpu once. I don't need to for next gen. Saved myself $500 + $500 in online fees plus last gens online fees. Pc building is about longevity. Consoles easily surpassed the cost
I'm going to grab that Seagate 1TB for launch and use that until prices on the larger expansion slot cards come down (it will happen). And then I am going to get at least a 4TB external drive for older games and stuff I want to send to storage. That should do me for awhile.
I keep my non-optimized games in a WD SSD and they work very well. I can even transfer optimized games to the external SSD when I am not playing them and it takes less than 10 minutes to move them back to the internal SSD.
Seriously, I got it but because with Best Buy I banked so many rewards I got it for almost half price. I picked that up already but I won’t have the series x for 3 more days until I can pick it up
FYI you can buy a pc external drive and format it on the xbox but the drive has to have photos on it first before you plug it into the xbox. Hopes this helps and saves you money. Cost me $60 for 2TB
I bit the bullet and bought the 1tb seagate expansion card for my new series S. I think I’ll add the Samsung T5, since it will work for playing some backwards compatible games and allows for faster loads and swaps. I love my series S but I wish it shipped with 1TB internal.
I bet in a year or so, Microsoft will start introducing special edition consoles with 2TB storage or more. While the 1 TB SSD is incredible, my plan is to continue using my external HDD for my Xbox one games, and save my storage for the series X games.
Never bought a hard drive during the Xbox one era and haven’t bought one since the 360 so I’m catching up a little. You can’t just plug the hard drive in and play your games? You have to transfer it onto your console? Isn’t technology supposed to get less complicated and more convenient? I just bought a $300 series s and have forza horizon 5 and black ops Cold War downloaded and now have no room on my Xbox and I’m already gonna have to pay half the console to be able to play more than 2 games?

I already have one of those samsung drives sitting around, if I can store games I'm on hold with would save me loads of time. I have a 4TB external HD for my One X contains all my games and apps, this will just plug straight into a Series X USB port, job done and I can continue to play them from it. You only need to transfer a game to the Series X if it’s been optimised for the Series X. I will be buying a further external 2TB SSD drive to store Series X only games that I will not be playing immediately. Hope this helps you. Digital Foundry covered this in a recent video.

Plus I really need a big storage option for alot of the older games, as these tiny SSDs wont cut it for a while. External SSD sounds good too. Ill look into that later for sure. I will likely be selling my PS4 PRO , Xbox One X, after I can confirm all the backwards compatibility and that the new systems can capture 60 minute clips. I post playthroughs so the 60 minute capture is important. Do you know if Series X supports 60 minute captures? I saw it supports 4K capture but Ill prob stick with 1080.
I doubt I’ll ever get the 1Tb external storage, especially at $220. IF it ever comes down to $150, MAYBE then. But until that day, I’ll use my 2Tb HDD storage and move my games around between it and the internal storage.
Great info dump. Thanks. I still don't know how much I'll be using my Series S... I'm still playing on my PS4 Pro for the most part and I think it will remain that way going forward. Where as my Series S would be chilling on the side providing me with the ability to play some good old gems and the occasional game from the Games Pass that I haven't purchased yet. But fact is, both of those things can mount up to quite a lot of space on just 360GB... SSD's at more than just 250GB start get onto the 100's and if I go down that route then I'd be better off just getting a Series X instead. Even though that's easier said than done...
I would like to see Microsoft sell an adapter for the expansion card slot to a m.2 nvme that you buy your self were you can store xbox series x or s games on them. As long as the nvme ssd that you buy has the right read and write speeds I would think there would be no problem with this method.
I’ve just got the Series S, and despite it saying it has 512gb storage it only has 376gb.... I understand they need storage for the UI but losing around 150gb is ridiculous. In a nutshell, you will need an expansion ssd or external HDD (I’d go with the latter and transfer S/X optimised games back and forth simply because by time new games are released there’ll be more expansion packs and the prices will be slightly cheaper - supply and demand of these will reduce price in 2021)

Yeah the ssd card they made is easy to use but $220 is a lot for a special housing. It’s made more clear when other normal m.2 drives that are the same price but faster and work with the ps5 also with more options...
So in other news. Using a SATA III 2.5 to USB connection to a 870 QVO SSD seems to be slightly better for around the same price in terms of raw read & write speed.
I'm trying to manage what I keep on my console and what I keep in my external 4tb. Transfer is slow, and gta is dramatically faster on the console but eats up all that space. Im hoping there is a bigger, cheaper solution in the near future

Western digital works pretty well. Got a Western digital My book 8 terabyte external hard drive for my PS4. Would get a 20 terabyte WD external hard drive for a next gen console

Old guy here. Hoping one of you smarter (than me; which is most) gamers can help set me straight. I have an XBox One. Used to have an XBox 360 (so many games... and I'm annoyed that most aren't compatible). I still have the 360, but... it's in the closet. I've done the whole VHS/DVD/Blu Ray/Xbox disc thing for years only to find that... the discs can't be played anymore. It's frustrating. Digital sounds like the way to go, but.. that's not my question. My question is... am I better off with an external HDD or SSD? I don't want go above $150... but I THINK space matters more? Then, again...a faster load time would be nice. I honestly don't play that many games. Some sports stuff (Madden, the upcoming Show; GOW, etc.). I'm on a wired connection. I'm already at half capacity, though... as far as storage... and I've only played a handful of games (all via disc). Also, and unrelated... if I go with the Gamepass option... do you suggest Ultimate or the basic? I don't do online multiplayer (my friends are invisible), but... "more" games sounds good. I don't know. I took a peek at the Gamepass library and it didn't look too impressive.

This won't give you the "optimised" versions of game. You have to use the new series s/x ones to play with the 120fps 4k. Or you could download onto internal drive, but there is a little amount of space.

@@Alicia-nb2sf yes, the games should be marked weather they are optimised. I've installed all of the games that are optimised onto the internal, I'm not paying that much because in 2-3 weeks time, there will be a third party one that can play the optimised version of games.

Sounds like you’ll need multiple expansion cards after a period of time. Then you’ll need to identify each one whenever you’d like to revisit certain games.
That external card together with Series S is a bit more expensive than Xbox Series X. That's why there's no Series X stock anywhere. Because it's much more powerfull and efficient than Series S.
Thanks for your video. External Hard Drive for me, no question about it. The Seagate SSD is ridiculously expensive, almost half the price of the console itself. No way. I can live with tranfer of files to the internal SSD, I mean, 7 minutes? That's what I may take to brush my teeth. I can definitely live with that. Besides, it's not like I play 20 games at the same time. The only thing that worries me, a minor thing, is that MS might disable HDD tranfer/storage options to force people to buy these stupid memories. That's all I'm worried about.

I'm going to buy two 16 tb external hard drives to max out the external storage for my series x😏 I'm currently running two 8 tb hard drives and I'm just about of of storage so now I'll move one of those to my ps5 and one to my ps4 pro
I'll use my slower SSD for now. I'll pay the cost in time when transferring games between drives. It is an acceptable trade off....for now. P.S.- It is amazing, we are slowly transitioning back to 'cartridges'.

It's expensive because it's PCIe 4.0. PCIe 3.0 2TB SSD's are around $200 but the PCIe 4.0 SSD's are still around $200/TB.

The most common way is backing up to a massive hard drive and restoring them if you want to play them.

I think this would work best:
Play Original Xbox and Xbox 360 Games from the external hard drive (if you have one already)
Games that are not optimised for Series X or S play them on the external hard drive also
Series X or S optimised games, play them on internal and maybe some Xbox One unoptimized games as well
External SSD isn't worth it in my opinion. It's not that much cheaper than the official expansion card and you can't play Series X|S games on it.
I'd rather use an external HDD for old games, then save up for a proper SDD card.

Depends on the country. In Australia the new SX/SS SSD is $350 haha. Where as I can buy an external SSD like the one he used here (Samsung T5) 1TB for $120. It's a no brainer for me!

Given what I saw of the teardown of the Xbox expansion storage, I bet there will be a third party expansion storage that is not the Seagate storage within the first 6 months of launch. Within a year there will be an enclosure that work with specific NVMe drives. Prices will be more competitive than people think.
Pretty concerned about what the reliability of these would be. I'd say I definitely trust Microsoft to replace faulty SSD's (I'd look I to it before buying rather than assuming of course) and I trust their quality overall. Third parties I'd be pretty unsure of

You see making a SSD card that transfers data at 2.4gbps won't be cheap. That's why you insert the Seagate one in to match those speeds but Microsoft might brick 3rd parties. I think that's why Sony hasn't released their own yet because how can they make an external SSD run at 6.4gbps. Theres videos on the ps5 completely dying when connecting an external SSD, even an HDD
@@mmm.3839 - I think the HDD is simply scare mongering or relates to an individual 'bad unit' as opposed to anything else. A mechanical drive does not have access to the lower level API/key architecture of the PS5, in the same way that a HDD does not have access to the velocity architecture on the Xbox Series X/S. That's why no game designed for either console can run off a HDD and why such a drive is only for backward compatible games, or in the case of the Xbox Series X/S for storing a next gen game. An SSD is the same situation. With the Xbox Series X/S, it can ONLY be used to store next gen games, NOT play them, or play backward compatible titles. On the PS5 an SSD can ONLY be used to play backward compatible titles. No SSD can be connected to the internal port on the playstation right now, they have disabled the port, and it will only be made functional at a latter date via updated firmware once Sony have given the public their white list of acceptable SSD solutions. With the Xbox Series X/S of course the ONLY solution for playing next gen titles is the branded Seagate 1TB card.

I have both a Series X and a PS5 and I gotta say, Sony’s solution for adding storage is way better! Super easy to pop the cover over and throw an M.2 SSD in the expansion bay. And you can find way better deals on those SSDs than the Seagate cards which are literally the only option for storage expansion that can run Series X/S games. I have a Seagate 4TB hard drive I use to store older games and for cold storage of new games if needed. Think I’m gonna eventually get an external SSD though for the faster load and transfer times.

Western digital has a ssd external for gaming and its call WD Black. It has 3.2 usb port. You can get a 3tb for 100 dollars as BestBuy.

You 'can' transfer these games to the internal for the speedy loads though, which is cool.

I'll manage with 800GB internal for now. That 1tb Seagate SSD for Xbox X|S is 299 CAD. That price will drop as the cost to manufacturer goes down in the future. 100-150 CAD will be a good price in the future.

The Seagate Expansion card is worth the money just for the huge read/write speeds alone... Plus once the main SERIES S/X buying spree is over they'll start to sit on shelves and the prices will drop by £10-30, depending on retailers & special offers, to get them moving again...
It just seems ridiculous to me that I need to pay $200 to get 1 TB of storage for X/S games to still work without having to move stuff around, and 1 TB isn't even a lot, it would already be filled up with the few games I had to delete already to stay within my current 1 TB internal storage on the X. It's all BS
I’m using two Samsung 870 EVO 4TB SSD’s in external cases as my external storage.
It means I can use those for ONE, 360 & OG games on those & get SSD speeds, and save the main SSD for Series X enhanced games.
Love my Series S so far. Just need that new hard drive

It comes with about 350 gigs usable I think can’t remember, and I put about 3 Xbox series X/S games, but if they are older, would be less memory. The new games take up about a 100 gigs. Idk why. Currently with the hard drive tho. I moved all the older games to the WD hard drive and have about 6 series X/S games
most expensive gen ever, gives pc's a run for it's money. I don't want a million games I own enough... So I will just want 1 to 8 and play and finish them and move on. Gamepass is the way to go. For older stuff use old hdd.

I built my pc in 2014. Upgraded the cpu and gpu once. I don't need to for next gen. Saved myself $500 + $500 in online fees plus last gens online fees. Pc building is about longevity. Consoles easily surpassed the cost
I'm going to grab that Seagate 1TB for launch and use that until prices on the larger expansion slot cards come down (it will happen). And then I am going to get at least a 4TB external drive for older games and stuff I want to send to storage. That should do me for awhile.

I keep my non-optimized games in a WD SSD and they work very well. I can even transfer optimized games to the external SSD when I am not playing them and it takes less than 10 minutes to move them back to the internal SSD.

FYI you can buy a pc external drive and format it on the xbox but the drive has to have photos on it first before you plug it into the xbox. Hopes this helps and saves you money. Cost me $60 for 2TB

Been using a 2Tb Samsung SSD On my Xbox One X for For quite a while now. Been enjoying fast load time for games and file downloads for for years.
I bit the bullet and bought the 1tb seagate expansion card for my new series S. I think I’ll add the Samsung T5, since it will work for playing some backwards compatible games and allows for faster loads and swaps. I love my series S but I wish it shipped with 1TB internal.
I bet in a year or so, Microsoft will start introducing special edition consoles with 2TB storage or more. While the 1 TB SSD is incredible, my plan is to continue using my external HDD for my Xbox one games, and save my storage for the series X games.
Never bought a hard drive during the Xbox one era and haven’t bought one since the 360 so I’m catching up a little. You can’t just plug the hard drive in and play your games? You have to transfer it onto your console? Isn’t technology supposed to get less complicated and more convenient? I just bought a $300 series s and have forza horizon 5 and black ops Cold War downloaded and now have no room on my Xbox and I’m already gonna have to pay half the console to be able to play more than 2 games?

I have a 4TB external HD for my One X contains all my games and apps, this will just plug straight into a Series X USB port, job done and I can continue to play them from it. You only need to transfer a game to the Series X if it’s been optimised for the Series X. I will be buying a further external 2TB SSD drive to store Series X only games that I will not be playing immediately. Hope this helps you. Digital Foundry covered this in a recent video.

I will likely be selling my PS4 PRO , Xbox One X, after I can confirm all the backwards compatibility and that the new systems can capture 60 minute clips. I post playthroughs so the 60 minute capture is important. Do you know if Series X supports 60 minute captures? I saw it supports 4K capture but Ill prob stick with 1080.

I doubt I’ll ever get the 1Tb external storage, especially at $220. IF it ever comes down to $150, MAYBE then. But until that day, I’ll use my 2Tb HDD storage and move my games around between it and the internal storage.

I still don't know how much I'll be using my Series S... I'm still playing on my PS4 Pro for the most part and I think it will remain that way going forward. Where as my Series S would be chilling on the side providing me with the ability to play some good old gems and the occasional game from the Games Pass that I haven't purchased yet.
But fact is, both of those things can mount up to quite a lot of space on just 360GB... SSD's at more than just 250GB start get onto the 100's and if I go down that route then I'd be better off just getting a Series X instead. Even though that's easier said than done...
I would like to see Microsoft sell an adapter for the expansion card slot to a m.2 nvme that you buy your self were you can store xbox series x or s games on them. As long as the nvme ssd that you buy has the right read and write speeds I would think there would be no problem with this method.

I’ve just got the Series S, and despite it saying it has 512gb storage it only has 376gb.... I understand they need storage for the UI but losing around 150gb is ridiculous. In a nutshell, you will need an expansion ssd or external HDD (I’d go with the latter and transfer S/X optimised games back and forth simply because by time new games are released there’ll be more expansion packs and the prices will be slightly cheaper - supply and demand of these will reduce price in 2021)
So long as I don’t have to wait several hours to install a game even 14 minutes sounds like heaven, my Xbox one s with my 8 TB and 2 TB hard drives take so long to install

Yeah the ssd card they made is easy to use but $220 is a lot for a special housing. It’s made more clear when other normal m.2 drives that are the same price but faster and work with the ps5 also with more options...
So in other news. Using a SATA III 2.5 to USB connection to a 870 QVO SSD seems to be slightly better for around the same price in terms of raw read & write speed.
I'm trying to manage what I keep on my console and what I keep in my external 4tb. Transfer is slow, and gta is dramatically faster on the console but eats up all that space. Im hoping there is a bigger, cheaper solution in the near future

Old guy here. Hoping one of you smarter (than me; which is most) gamers can help set me straight. I have an XBox One. Used to have an XBox 360 (so many games... and I'm annoyed that most aren't compatible). I still have the 360, but... it's in the closet. I've done the whole VHS/DVD/Blu Ray/Xbox disc thing for years only to find that... the discs can't be played anymore. It's frustrating. Digital sounds like the way to go, but.. that's not my question. My question is... am I better off with an external HDD or SSD? I don't want go above $150... but I THINK space matters more? Then, again...a faster load time would be nice. I honestly don't play that many games. Some sports stuff (Madden, the upcoming Show; GOW, etc.). I'm on a wired connection. I'm already at half capacity, though... as far as storage... and I've only played a handful of games (all via disc). Also, and unrelated... if I go with the Gamepass option... do you suggest Ultimate or the basic? I don't do online multiplayer (my friends are invisible), but... "more" games sounds good. I don't know. I took a peek at the Gamepass library and it didn't look too impressive.

This won't give you the "optimised" versions of game. You have to use the new series s/x ones to play with the 120fps 4k. Or you could download onto internal drive, but there is a little amount of space.

if the game is exclusive for xbox one yes you can play, but if it's optimazed for series s/x you can't

Sounds like you’ll need multiple expansion cards after a period of time. Then you’ll need to identify each one whenever you’d like to revisit certain games.
Organize them in alphabetical order
That external card together with Series S is a bit more expensive than Xbox Series X. That's why there's no Series X stock anywhere. Because it's much more powerfull and efficient than Series S.
Thanks for your video. External Hard Drive for me, no question about it. The Seagate SSD is ridiculously expensive, almost half the price of the console itself. No way. I can live with tranfer of files to the internal SSD, I mean, 7 minutes? That's what I may take to brush my teeth. I can definitely live with that. Besides, it's not like I play 20 games at the same time. The only thing that worries me, a minor thing, is that MS might disable HDD tranfer/storage options to force people to buy these stupid memories. That's all I'm worried about.

I'm going to buy two 16 tb external hard drives to max out the external storage for my series x😏 I'm currently running two 8 tb hard drives and I'm just about of of storage so now I'll move one of those to my ps5 and one to my ps4 pro
I'll use my slower SSD for now. I'll pay the cost in time when transferring games between drives. It is an acceptable trade off....for now.
