      Richard, the Camel Trophy was a competition among countries, not vehicle manufacturers. In fact, between 1981 and 2000, the last year it was held, Land Rovers were the only vehicles used and they were heavily modified by Land Rover Special Vehicles. I'm not sure this proves LR's superiority over Toyota if that was your point.

    • @Nonamenever557
      @Nonamenever557 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Beaman they were not heavily modified at all.

    • @jamesbeaman6337

      I found this list of modifications included in many of the vehicles in the camel trophy:
      Safety Devices roll cages
      Under body protection and steering guards
      Modified electrical systems
      Winches
      Dixon Bate tow hitches and recovery points
      Mantec snorkels
      Transmission breathers
      Michelin XCL or BF Goodrich Mud Terrain tyres
      Upgraded suspension and transmission components
      Auxiliary fuel tanks
      Webasto fuel burning heaters
      Brownchurch / Safety Devices roof racks
      Hella driving, spot, fog, convoy and work lamps
      Brownchurch Bull bars and bush wires

      Pete, they also say "you have a penchant for women's underwear, and secretly desire Margaret Thatchers crochet collection" - but it doesn't necessarily make it true does it. Look at all of the Land rovers in service with the forces.

      Dakar vehicles are bespoke custom built machines, and if you have 800K, sure you might be able to cojole Toyota into building you one, but I doubt it.

    The answer is no, it's all MOJO. The RR is unreliable and as crap for resale. They really aren't in direct competition. G Wagon? Try keeping one on the road after the warranty expires. The Cruiser and LX sell combined 8000 a year, every one of them that isn't wrecked will be on the road in 25 years. Try that with RR or MB.

      There's little doubt that the Land Cruiser is the most reliable of the three but reliability isn't the only reason to buy a car. Take a look at the new styling of the Camry: th-cam.com/video/BBS1SD23P1A/w-d-xo.html Even Toyota recognizes that car needs to be more than just reliable to be successful and lust worthy.

      People who buys Range Rover or Benz probably won't care all that much about the cost of fixing up stuff and resale value. Plus they not going to drive the car for 25 years, five year max. Don't use your way of living to judge rich people's life style, you won't understand their world if you are not there.Just saying.

    Watching this video I'm convinced 100% that Roman 1. Doesn't know how to Offroad 2. Doesn't know how to pull people out when there stuck3. Doesn't know how to use the vehicles he tests4. Is biased to certain vehicles and misconceptions without proof5. Doesn't give subjective reviews6. Nathan and the Russian guy should be doing all the reviews

    Based on the Tundra? Where did TFL get that from? Not at all. The Tundra was designed in Detroit while the LC200 was designed in Japan. They do share the 5.7L engine in north america but that is about it. Am I the only one who feels like this vehicle wasn't reviewed correctly? Here are a few things I don't think were appropriate:
    1-The platform is not shared with the Tundra
    2-Sales: while the sales are low in the USA, keep in mind the number of vehicles made available by Toyota for sale in the US is very low. The LC200 is sold on every continent., unlike the Tacoma, Tundra and 4Runner that are made for North America.
    3-Off road capability: this is one of the most capable vehicle in the world, just watch a few videos from the Australian outback or overlanders going around the world while towing a heavy trailer off road. Watch the guys from All4Adventure using modified LC200s for example.
    4-They didn't put emphasis on the vehicle's number 1 attribute, reliability. This attribute is partly due to the fact that the United Nations (UN) are one of the largest customers of these vehicles and require them to last in the worst conditions in the world.
    5-Capacity to be modified for off road: in a smiliar what there are tons of off-road after market parts for Jeeps, the land cruiser

    There is also something to be said about "Stealth Wealth" - Range Rovers, G-Wagons et al attract a lot of eyes. There is also something to be said about the engineering goals and durability standards of Land Cruisers. Not to mention the assembly line that they are built on in Japan has some of the most skilled workers Toyota has to offer. The Land Cruiser crowd are a faithful and loyal bunch, for good reason.

    There's a reason a Land Cruiser holds its residual value while a Range Rover doesn't hold it worth squat. I've 2 of the 3 last versions of Range Rover (bought new) and they were wonderful cars to drive. Unfortunately, they spent weeks in the shop over the course of a year. I finally got fed up and started looking at Land Cruisers. I picked up a new 2012 LC and have put 172,000 miles on it with not a single problem and only ever goes to the dealer for scheduled maintenance. When I would off-road up the mountains above Silverton, CO (Alpine Loop) and the last place I wanted was a vehicle that was going to give me problems. The Land Cruiser never has.

      Craig L no point trying to convince this biased oldie of the capabilities of such a revered vehicle. He is only concerned with the American market in his little bubble! He can’t not hate on Toyota because he doesn’t do his research which reminds me: Ignorance is bliss!

  • @Grenyas
    @Grenyas 7 ปีที่แล้ว +208

    Honestly, I'm sure most G-Wagen and Range Rover buyers aren't cross shopping for a Land Cruiser. Those types of buyers are searching for a more luxurious experience and the brand name. Range Rovers are far less reliable, but they still sell a lot of them because their customer base wants the nicest SUV they can get and don't care about long-term durability since they're likely to upgrade to a newer model before the warranty runs out.
    People going for the Land Cruiser likely know about their superb reliability. They're willing to sacrifice having a less luxurious experience for something they know will treat them well and can still go off-road. Granted, not many of those types of buyers exist and it's reflected in the sales figures.
    It will be interesting to see Chrysler entering this market once the Grand Wagoneer comes out.

    You're comparing the well-built and capable Land Cruiser to the over-hyped and overpriced G wagon??? I'm almost shocked you didn't mention Escalade in the same sentence too. You pay hardly any attention to the details of what you are reviewing but are very quick to inject your personal opinion. Your job in front of that camera is to be critical and unbiased, and yet you have hardly mentioned anything about the vehicle itself. Educated buyers do their homework. I put in the effort when I visit the dealership and get to know the vehicle, it's handling, features, quirks, comfort, controls, driving experience... This video is about as helpful as a 4-minute 4-right-turn dealer test drive. Thumbs up for the Land Cruiser and thumbs down for Roman.

    • @MichaelF1

      Luscious3174 Mt. Shekel. the g isn't overhyped. It is definitely overpriced though

    • @signs80
      @signs80 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The G is def overhyped for off road ability. It's heavy, has a very bad CoG, has basically a fake bull bar, comes with street sport tires for some reason, has bad breakover angle due to the exhaust and overall luxury wise is pretty meh. Most of this stuff is fairly fixable but then you're spending an extra several thousand to upgrade a $130,000+ SUV when you could buy a Land Cruiser 200 + lift, armor, tires, etc. or a Raptor or something

    • @MichaelF1
      @MichaelF1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      signs Stock, it out offroads nearly every oem vehicle available. it handles a wide array of reasonable (read that as "what new car owners consider off-road) terrain well.
      Obviously, my long arm xj will out wheel it, but it works well...Especially amongst its real competition...The "baby elephant SUV that can also go to aspen" segment of the market.
      interior is nice, looks like a Kardashian car(a plus in some circles), etc. yes, it is sent with garbage tires, but that is market wants over engineering. Their customers don't want a/t tires, they associate them (incorrectly) with true off-road tires and therefore howl.

    • @t-bone9239
      @t-bone9239 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are obviously biased towards the Land Cruiser. Sure it is a gold car. But the G wagon too. And dont compare the G wagon to the Escalade. The G wagon is military grade and if you look under it you can see that it has more in common with an Unimog than with a regular SUV.

    Why don't you think it's good offroad? You didn't show any tests at all, you didn't talk about the crawl modes, the low range, the turning circle helper.

    If you travel the world with G Wagon or Range Rover, make sure a Land Cruiser follows you. The Land Cruiser has to tow both to the next mechanic. Land Cruiser may not be as "fancy" looking as either, but it gets the job done better than any other vehicle. I personally like the LX570 more as I think it has a much better interior though.

    Beg pardon if this is already mentioned in one of the 600+ comments preceding this one. . . .
    There is SOOO much incorrect information given in this video. Roman, I lost a lot of respect for you on this one. The 200 Series LC is not a shared platform with the Tundra, nor do they have the same engine. The Tundra and the Sequoia, both vehicles designed, marketed, and built in the US for the North American market, share the same basic platform. If you look at photos of the Tundra/Sequoia taken from underneath and compare to photos of the LC200 from the same angle, you'll notice that there is NOTHING common between them other than rear axle assembly. The suspension of the LC200 has far greater articulation than the Tundra/Sequoia. The engines are similar, but the Tundra/Sequoia engines are built in the US with different components than the Japanese built engines of the LC200.
    I am embarrassed for you showing the footage of you bumbling and making excuses for your uninspiring efforts to retrieve the stuck RR. I am also embarrassed for you given the complete 180 you have taken given your previous praise given for this vehicle in earlier videos. As your channel has grown, you have become a complete shill for whoever is willing to dole out the cash. Your technical knowledge is limited, and it's obvious you only parrot whatever information you're given by others. I agree that you should let Andre and Nathan handle making the videos.

      Viren S ha! 60 k/h in 7 seconds maybe! Stock they do 0-100k/h in about 10 sec. Which is a slug. The 6 speed slushbox doesn't help. Toyota didn't even bother making the 8 speed for the diesel!

    I had to stop watching the video just to post this comment. Roman you're everything I hate about a lot of journalists. Your clear bias and lust for everything German is so obvious it makes these "reviews" lack credibility. But hey, just so you know, the LC doesn't have to sell well, at 80k 3,000 sales a year is plenty. And even if it wasn't selling that much, Toyota doesn't offer this car for sales, it's about heritage, why else do you think the LC got an update before the sagging Sequoia? Furthermore, your comment at the end of the video is damn near infuriating. So essentially, you don't think the LC is luxurious OR a good off-roader. You might be the only person in this world that think the LC doesn't have a level of sophistication about it. This is the reason why I take every TFL review with a grain of salt. You want more credibility, go to MT or C&D or even more small time reviewers like Redline Reviews. I'm convinced that you and Nathan are incredibly bias and often times have no idea what the fuck you're talking about.

    That's a pretty shitty, baseless review. Good luck getting back from the trail in a Land Rover product! Not to mention the resale value, or lack thereof! They are a frigging joke. My cruiser always brings my family home, no matter what.The cruiser does not need your endorsement, after all. It sells to a select group of individuals who are not interested in attracting unwanted attention and only want a high quality, all-purpose, go anywhere vehicle.

    Thats what we recover everyday up here in the North. Tip: with that much space: hook up the strap to the rear passenger side Wheel, and pull it 90 degrees (no gas/ no brakes/ no turning the wheels from the LandRover) - that way you turn the Landrover on to the plowed road, with both rear tires - its much easier to finish the recovery that way.
    Cheers from Scandinavia

      Not really. When the vehicle is in the ditch like that its mostly hung up on snow and there will not be additional damage to the wheels etc. Of course its best to make the desicion and judgement of how to get the car free from time to time - but most of the times when the car is stuck like that a little 90 degree jank with the strap to the wheel will ease it up and make the recovery much easier.

      No one gives a damn about the American market sales. Are you kidding me, or are you kidding yourself? The Land Cruiser only made its way over there recently, with only the 200 series available, and with only 1 engine choice. So this means nothing.
      Check out countries that do actual offroading on cultural base, countries with rugged terrain and inhospitable landscapes. Check out markets that actually have them for many years now, and have the full range of LC's.
      Land Cruisers (and Toyota's as a whole) are sold in the millions worldwide.
      And again, this doesn't even mean much.
      What's even more important is their reliability (waaaaaay out of the LR's league, and pretty much everyone else' for that matter), capability (again, pretty much untouchable), resale value (untouchable, specially by the most depreciating company known to man - LR), and other meaningful things.
      That's what's important. At least to people that know what a motorized vehicle actually is! Those are facts.
      I would also suggest checking out Lexus sales in the US, since that's what's more concentrated for the respective market, if the numbers are that important to you.
      Don't be as moronic as the clueless sheep out there and actually think with your own head, thanks.

      @tipsofme 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Frank White, sure? I still have my 2010 HSE Lux with 75k original miles and I've had zero issues. We have two other LR products in my extended family. No issues. No one needs to defend LR, they're doing just fine without you. The LC sales in 2000 were 15k units in the US. After 2004 they have never gone back in to the 4000 unit range. It just isn't popular here. It's most popular in Australia. I know what I am talking about, we own a Toyota dealership here in the states and they don't sell. Not saying they aren't good trucks but they still don't sell. I'm happy with my RR. You be happy with you LC. If you even own one.

Have you even driven in the G wagon it's so stiff no where near as comfortable as the land cruiser. Then say the Range Rover is better hmm 🤔 last time I check Range Rover are a joke due to their horrible reliability and horrid resale value. By all means choose the Range Rover and get stuck in the middle of no where. That means we won't see you post anymore shitty reviews. Overall most bang for your buck is the land cruiser and if you care about brands go to the Rover or g wagon. This is a beast.

    The thing is that Land Cruisers, outside the US sell in the equivalent amounts as Escalades, Tahoes and Yukons combined, so Toyota is definitely making a killing off the 200 Series. Maybe it doesn't appeal to the American Market as much as GM's SUV's, Range Rovers, G-Wagons, because it wasn't really made for the American Market. So the answer to the question is no. The Land Cruiser still has its MOJO, now more than ever

  • @pennysmurf
    @pennysmurf 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I don't think the Land Cruiser should be compared to those two. The LC was made for occasionally needing to go off road or occasionally needing to tow something say on the farm.
    The MBG was made from a military grade vehicle with constant off road encounters so it really isn't apples vs apples.
    The RR doesn't do well in the longevity test regarding electronics and their fancy shmancy air suspension. So I still say the Japanese have won this.

    Love that there is a lot of hate four this car, which I own. Talked to a few different people at my office that own range rovers, yes they do love them, now. But not after they had to shell out thousands of dollars fixing them. One lady has had the engine replaced after she bought the car, because it crapped out. Leaking from the doors, electrical problems. She had a rental for a while, why? Because it was in the shop. Granted my vehicle has had issues. One only, radiator blew up, which seems to be a common problem. Replaced it myself and is back on the road. 108k miles on the odometer, still running, still performing. No issues. Gas guzzler, yes. Does the family prefer going on the second car, not a chance. I wished for better mileage, yes. But nothing else. RR and benzos are pretty, I'll give them that, but after doing my homework, I'll stick to what I have. Just my opinion.

I was looking at this video for impressions as I am sick of the unreliability of my late model Suburban LTZ and want something bullet proof: incredibly reliable, able to haul my crew, pull a boat, and get through the white stuff. This vehicle has all of that. What I haven't seen down at the boat ramp is someone trailering a 24' Cobalt with a LR or a G-Wagon. The cost of admission is steep and the cost of ownership in relation to fuel is not wonderful. But I'll take the LC over the GW any day of the week. And you can keep the LR/RR entirely.

    Whenever I see a vehicle stuck in slippery conditions like that and the vehicle is on a slanted ground towards the ditch, I say to my self "why are they trying to recover the car in the traditional way, i.e. pulling from front or rear STRAIGHT???". Pulling it at n angle was right, but not from the rear, since the vehicle was already head covered. You should have pulled at an angle from the front the first time.
    Plus, try next time to straighten the rope and keep people clear specially when you don't have something to cover it

Personally that's a lot of money to spend on an SUV. When you talk $80,000 and up I will get more of a refined machine like a Porsche. What the Toyota Land Cruiser is really about is long-term reliability and safety. It's a tank on wheels meant to last forever. Crown Victorias, Mack trucks and Caterpillars don't come cheap and might not be stylish but get the job done. In Mexico several military grade VR6 armored Land Cruisers, Suburbans and Grand Cherokees take on potholes and speed bumps on the road with ease.

  • @khj697

    I enjoyed the episode but it seems as though TFL isn't a fan of any of the styling Toyota offers. I do love this refresh they've done on the 200 series. I would enjoy seeing an optioned out Tahoe or a 4x4 Escalade compared with a 200 series. Most Range Rovers (not the sport variant) are similarly priced to the LC, are not any better in approach or departure angles by any substantial measure, and have very awkward sized tires to even find a good all terrain tire to fit. The G wagon is a great truck but it's at least $40k more and can be as much as $140k more than the LC and they still only sell roughly 3500 units during a good year. If I had $87k, I would have the LC! There's a ton of value in it compared to the rest of the market (IMO).

    Thirsty? Really? At 15 mpg for a very capable off-road AND luxury vehicle with a proven and gutsy V8, I would consider it par for the course. If it didn't have the V8 or as powerful an engine, the complaint would be; not enough power. Americans are never content. I get the part about challenging the manufacturers but, this is still a top of the line SUV that isn't just a street queen. Land Rover is sexy? compared to what? That's very subjective and open for LOTs of debate. G-wagon badass? Why because rich people buy it to drive it down the streets of Beverly Hills? No sir, G-wagon is a heavy, powerful and while we're on the subject of thirsty? Let's talk mpg with that beast. Anyhow, back to the G-wagon; UGLY. Nothing pretty about the G-wagon and who can afford it? At least with the Land Cruiser, it's within the reach of many middle-class Americans. So when the G-wagon is ugly, you call it iconic styling? Gimme a break Roman, I'm throwing the BS flag on that. Call it what it is; UGLY. Range Rovers are handsome and refined not doubt, and very capable. I would say this directly competes with the Land Cruiser which is why the Cruiser has upped it's game in the luxury department and thus, the price. 22" inch wheels on the Rover is RIDICULOUS. Need driving lessons Roman? Try a snatch strap which should be in any off-road worthy vehicle. Traction on the snow and ice is not going to get that Rover that you yourself said isn't an off-road vehicle. Of course, it IS a different class than your LC however, lots of irony there. It drives like a BIG, HEAVY, SOMEWHAT cumbersome truck. Hmmmmm, like the G-wagon? No, I think not that big and cumbersome. All-season tires which are useless off-road and yet you just pulled a Rover out. It's kind of like the Rovers which come with 22" wheels and what's that? All season radials? C'mon man. Trail damage gonna get expensive; OK, I concede that on moderate to hard-core off-roading that is a good possiblity. However, Can we mention the direct competitors to this? How expensive is a Mercedes and Land Rover going to get? I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say, yeah, a LOT more expensive. I agree that you can't be great at off-roading and luxury unless you're willing to spend well into the 6 digit and above prices. But, in the market of today, who is buying these vehicles? Toyota has to provide for the demand of the market like everybody else and they do without losing it's off-road roots. Who drives these? I can honestly say that I have seen lots of soccer moms and Drs driving the Land Cruiser or it's Lexus brother the LX 570. Again, it's apparent you are scolding Toyota for not being the end all be all of off-road vehicles but, are you going to buy one without the modern amenities that you say make this vehicle expensive? C'mon man

    You should see how well the landcruiser does in the middle east especially the desert countries. Range rovers r just as good here on the road and ofc hold their respect on the road but nothing beats a landcruiser or a nissan patrol off road (desert) not to mention reliability and resale value. Great review though. Hope you guys can join us in dubai for an off road adventure with arctic trucks.

    Bahahaha!! talks about the Range rover being better than Toyota Land Cruiser. Then has to use the Land Cruiser tow out that worthless crap Range Rover from snow, then assumes that its stuck because it's got the wrong tires, and gets corrected by the owner of the Ranger Rover and says they're all season. Proving that he doesn't know what all season tires look like, and still doesn't know cars.Never, ever, Insult the legend like this again. compare the piece of shit range rover that beaks down and has the crappiest reliability of any vehicle. And the G wagon is a joke, you know it and I know it. It's the worst riding vehicle on the road, and has god awful handling, and the Land Cruiser OFFERS THE SAME LUXURY WITH BETTER readability. The Rang Rover its an electrical nightmare.

    The US version of the LC200 is really about luxury. The Mid-East version of this has so many choices..All the way from 4.0 4.7 to 5.7 with so many options. Not as equipped as the US version but certainly more personality with a much cheaper price.

    Here in Australia, the Land Crusier is the backbone on this country. So many people rely on their off-road vehicle. From work, to recreational. And I can honestly say the Cruiser out performs any competition, including the Land Rover. It's so widely used that it's one of the top selling vehicles. They're so popular that they come in many different styles and configurations, even with models from the 80's being remade and updated for modern use, such as the 70 series work mate. Many companies, such as ARB and TJM sell many after market and useful gear for these vehicles. The manufacturer (Toyota) also believes that Australia is one of the harshest environments, thus why they test everyone of their off-road models in the Australian outback. And trust me, it's harsh.
    What I'm trying to say is, if you want something reliable, tough and with a good life expectancy, go the Crusier. After all, us Aussies only used them for an odd 60 decades. We've got this far with them, they ain't going anywhere anytime soon.

    Tires? Super important. I recommend Nokian WR G3 SUVs. I have these in 255/45R20 on my XC60 T6 and the non-SUV version in 235/50R18 on my wifes XC70 T6. Both have excellent traction in snow and on ice, I was expecting good performance but I've been very impressed.

    Him rescuing another vehicle is why I always go Toyota. Since I was a child we've rescued jeeps, fords, etc. from trails, pits and roadside in our Toyotas. It's great if you have all the fancy stuff inside, but I'd rather just buy a vehicle to get from point A to B and know it's going to get there.

    Spot on! I have a very well equipt and locked 80. I needed to replace an aging '05 Duramax as I have a decent sized boat I need to tow here in AZ. I thought about a new LC, but got a '16 Power Wagon. Grin on face every drive. Not sure about the red grill and ask me in 10 years as the thing grenades thou, I'm sure Ill have a different opinion. ORD in Carbondale for the green squares' suspension. Hit them up. And 8.1 Vortec with a NV4500. Buddy in Pueblo has done several and has been featured in several 4wheeler rags. Tough part is finding the correct transfercase. He's got a '89, Burb from Denver, with that combo that is just cool! Very minty, but so is his '78 shortbed. Engineer for Navistar, so not your ordinary shade tree dude. Be interesting to do the Ike, and I'd be willing to bet he'd be more than up for it! You guys ever come to the Overland Expo in Flag?
