  • Toyota's Land Cruiser is a modern Toyota enigma. It's the rarest Toyota sold in America and the most expensive vehicle sold here that wears a Toyota logo. It's also one of the oldest Toyota models on sale, wears one of the most iconic name badges in existence and has a reputation for bullet-proof go-anywhere ability. But, I wouldn't buy one. Why? All that and more is explained in this video.

    Come back 10 years later and tell me if your RangeRover functions as easy as this Land Cruiser. Here in the middle east, I saw many people drive the Land Cruiser in the middle of the desert where every other vehicle boile down out of heat but Toyota vehicles keep going on. Nothing stops this car. People in the US always seem to neglect the main purpose of this car.

      We get the Land Cruiser Prado here in Trinidad either from the local Toyota franchise or as a grey import from Japan. These vehicles
      have a ridiculously long working life and it's common to see a 30 year old model still on the road. There's a reason why Toyota doesn't push this in the US: you all don't normally have conditions like the rest of the world and don't keep cars for so long

    To all the idiots complaining about the dated tech, fuel economy or price, you have to understand that this is a car designed to last you 25 years. Sure, it costs 90k, but you won't need another car ever again. Here in Europe it's cheaper and sold with a 3.0 diesel, so it gets good fuel economy, and it makes a lot more sense.

    • @alliejr
      @alliejr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      That's all well and good, but I'd rather start the 25 year clock at least somewhere in the 2010s, not in the 1990s. I drove a friends LC around the Hamptons and it was, without doubt, the worst "car" I have driven since my dad's Ford Pinto. Cramped, crashy, loose, slow, loud, rattle-trap. Full marks for reliability, but points off for actually having to live with it for 25 years.

    Not a bad review, but the Yanks don't get it. Landcruiser has bullet proof reliability compared to Jeep and Range Rover/ Landrover etc. etc. In Australia it's more expensive than in the U.S. Sahara around $125,000 Aust. Lexus around $150,000 - with that over the top grill. The 'Cruiser is sold here with the petrol V8 or diesel, and no one buys the petrol. It outsells the Range Rover/ Land Rover by 10 to one, not to mention the unreliable Jeep. They are the vehicle of choice for towing (3.5 tons) and you see them everywhere. The Outback, towing horse floats, boats, trailers etc.etc. and will get you home every time. Dealership back up, and parts availability, are the envy of all other manufactures. The Yanks love their big pickups, and that's understandable - they are also sold here converted to right hand drive, and sell for the same price as the Landcruiser Sahara. They are nowhere near as reliable as the Japanese built 'Cruiser, and too big off road. The 'Cruiser is getting a bit long in the tooth, bring on the 300 Series.

There are plenty of Toyota products that are priced about the same as GC but would get you to places without the anxiety associated with Jeep's reliability (Tacoma, 4Runner, FJ Cruiser).

  • @anantdabholkar685

    Alex, since you really don't Off-Road or Overland much, you should stick to reviewing cars. You will not understand the priorities of these vehicles, which are quite different from say, a Toyota highlander. For instance, air springs is a no-no for serious off reading or over landing. The LX cousin is all show and luxury for people with deeper pockets, and yet you recommend that to the car buyer. Fair enough. One thing your reviews will never cover, understandably, is reliability and ruggedness. These are the highest priority for a Overlander. Towing, gas mileage etc are all important but not primary. You can "mod" a Land cruiser to match the best that they offer in South Africa and Australia, other than the diesels they have. However, HP has its advantages over torque alone even when off-roading, when momentum is critical, or desert running. BTW, 14.4 mpg on your display isn't bad, you get 13 in the city sometimes in the real world with other 4 wheelers with 6 cylinder engines.

    • @johnsmithjr5974
      @johnsmithjr5974 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anant Dabholkar Agreed on the LX comment. For off-roaders, the LX isn’t as good a match as the LC given less clearance and more tech. That plus the LC’s name as the vehicle to aspire for - rugged reliability and comfort.

      To be fair, the LX570 is a pretty sweet ride too. You have to really want the LC to get over the LX. Also, if you’re looking used, it’s much easier to find clean LX models - especially in Southwest US where rust isn’t an issue.

    The main value is its reliability and durability. In other parts of the world it is valued even higher for its reliability so that it will not get you stuck in the middle of nowhere and lasts exactly in that tough condition for decades comparing to vulnerable craps like Land rover, Ford and GM that breaks down just for nothing. And yet people in US just talk about leather, infotainment and on road handling. Those are joke for those who really take it for its real purpose. In my country more than half of every single car sold as new, are landcruisers which may sound insane but is true.

    • @rameylewis7730
      @rameylewis7730 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Miigaa, I live in the USA and I own a 2008 LC. I didn't buy it for the leather seats, infotainment, or paved road handling. So I guess categorizing all Americans into what you think they want is probably incorrect. I own a 2005 4Runner too which I feel is a better off road vehicle than my LC. My Toyotas have not been more reliable than the Ford pick up trucks that I own. All of my vehicles look new and I keep them in tip top condition. As a matter of fact, I'm having to replace the transmission in my 2008 LC which is very expensive and shows that not all Land Cruisers were built to last 25 years as mine didn't make it but 11 years. I've had no major repairs required on my 2002 Ford P.U. which in my opinion has been more reliable than my LC. Don't get me wrong, I like my Toyotas or I wouldn't own them. Toyotas break down like any other machine.

    Well good presentation, but your understanding of the the Land Cruiser is, well not well thought out.
    The Land Cruiser is stealth wealth, quality, dependability and reliability. Those that understand, its getting you and your family there and back safely, dependably every time. That's why they buy a Land Cruiser.
    In upper income, the smart money (not the new money) neighborhoods they are regularly seen, not because they want something that screams I spent a lot of money on this, they want something they can rely on and get them there (where ever there happens to be for them) comfortably, reliably and back every time. Those people also don't want repair bills that are never ending and insanely high, like a Land Rover or G wagon.

    The G-wagon has triple lockers and a solid front axle which are great for off-roading I agree. but the land cruiser has A-trac which is electronically uses the ABS system to brake the tires that are slipping and and putting the power to the wheel that needs it. And the land cruiser will cruise down crappy dirt roads much better than the G wagon... Maybe that’s why they are always wining Baja 1000’s and Dakar races. When Ford Raptors either place behind them or break down and don’t even finish... I don’t recall a G-wagon ever winning.
    As far as the LX goes, I had both the LX you pay more and in the end the land cruiser sells for more in the used market... And are you kidding my you’ll rip the bumpers and running boards off the LX if you do any kind of serious off road. The land cruiser has much smaller side steps and the bumpers are much better for off-road. May get a litttle Road rash but won’t rip off like the lx bumpers and steps will. my wife drives the LX now as a family car and a vehicle we take moderately off road other wise I take the old land cruiser out to go more serious stuff and camping... have you seen the rear wheel flex with kdss? If you can’t flex you won’t have traction period... which is why Solid axles are better for off reading. Yes land cruisers don’t have that in the front because they opted for independent as a better option for what most people use land cruisers for. Getting to remote areas driving down crappy dirt roads... the land cruiser isn’t a rock crawler obviously look at its size.
    I can go on and on as someone who has had 7 land cruiser and Lx’s

    There are tons of Land Cruiser reviewers I've heard from, but Alex you have truly laid down the exact definition and purpose of this vehicle and didn't leave anything out. Everyone says that it's too expensive and one should go for either a Jeep GC, Range Rover, or a Navigator. But now we know exactly why the Land Cruiser still exists and who should or would buy it. Also, I completely agree with your opinion about the Lexus LX. Do you feel that going for a Lexus GX may also be a reasonable chose over the Land Cruiser?

    I’m STUNNED by your claim that a Tacoma would outperform a 200 Series. You’re on glue. The Cruiser has a vastly more powerful engine, lockers, and is light years more comfortable. The Landcruiser simply overmatches the Tacoma by a wide margin. Look at the 200’s in the U.N. Fleet!
    Additionally, clearance is addressed by larger tires!! the LX570 also has air suspension, which WILL fail. Booo

    I actually do NOT care about how much more of whatever anything else in the category has over the Land Cruiser. Why? It is a LAND CRUISER that is why. The overall build quality of this thing from bumper to bumper is STILL head and shoulders above the rest of the category despite any of its "drawbacks". These things just NEVER lose value. If I could afford one I would have one in my driveway right now.

    well the cruiser we got in the states is kinda the most plain cruiser cause in the UAE it has a lot of trim level starting from GX which is the cheapest and the VXR the highest or maybe the AX or ZX is the highest (i think,) in there you could get a cruiser with 4.0 v6 gas,4.6 v8 gas and a 5.7 v8 gas or an diesel 4.5 v8 twin turbo which is an option (according to wikipedia)
    and you could even get one with a stick (manual transmission) but it is rare the cruiser there has a lot of flashy chrome part and sometimes it has a chrome bodykit or whatever it is called on it's bumpers and sometimes it has a 20 inch or 22 inch rims and it will come with an E - step board (on expensive trim levels) just search on google theres a lot of it for sale and BTW
    Trim levels
    GX - is the cheapest
    GXR - MID range i think
    VX - MID range i think
    VXR AX ZX - HIGH END
    (search it on google)

    I just bought a 2017 Landcruiser. Had 3 before. They are the best. This reviewer was great, but he forgot the most important disadvantage of the LX570. It has to have Super Unleaded gas. Which here in San Antonio is about 70 cents higher per gallon. For what?? 383 HP versus 381 HP? And these people who run regular unleaded in a LX570 could possible be hurting the longevity of that engine. I sure got tired of putting Super Unleaded gas in the 1999 and 2005 Landcruiser I had. These Landcruisers are holding their resale value better than the LX570. You can see this on Cars.com and Autotrader .... Another thing this reviewer is not aware of. Great review, except for the 2 MOST important items. Come on, Alex!!!

    Like a lot of people have said-you dont know what you are talking about.How dare you compare the lexus with a LC and say its better? Better for what? The city Yes-offroad no, ruggedness, No, reliability, No, Looks, No, gadgets YES.You even lie and say Lexus looks better? For you, maybe, for the vast majority, the LC has that commanding presence starting with the Grille.Do some reseearch before you start misleading people like this.

  • @drsus0
    @drsus0 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    No... the Tacoma would not. The AWD system on the LC is far superior and that platform/suspension is also far superior, yes, in the US version. But take all that away and just compared the vehicles as if They had identical systems and suspensions... the Tacoma has a MUCH longer wheel base even in its shorter configuration (bad), ground clearance is the only place Tacoma wins, but thats a easy and typical upgrade to LCs. the approach, departure and brake overs on the Tacoma are not as good as the LC and as little as they are, these are not a very cheap shortcoming to improve for the Tacoma (Lot of heavy expansive bumpers and some cutting) , these are the things that decide what works best off road. Then lets add the payload capacity, something that matters a lot when “overlanding”, the contest is over. The poor Tacoma and it’s horrible power is an even bigger dog once loaded up with all the usual stuff while the LC barely feels any of it. People like to bring up MPG but they forget what a done up Tacoma does in MPG after its all said and done and how little the same mods affect the MPGs on the LC, they are almost identical by the time a typical off road Tacoma is built and the LC is built. I have a 4runer, and I acknowledge that the LC is a superior platform and system than mine, never mind the Tacoma.

    Disagree 100% you don't get it, as a Land Cruiser owner of multiple Land Cruisers and currently driving a 200 Series. Its more capable, more reliable and has a better resale value of all others you mentioned and has a high customer appreciation and big following of 2, 3rd owners ready to buy one. It dominates in Australian, Middle East and in Africa you can research that. th-cam.com/video/IXNDx_XgoKg/w-d-xo.html

    Is Lincoln Navigator even worth mentioning in this conversation? Sure Navigator is much more bigger than a Landcruiser for one obvious reason, they're not exactly direct competition. Keep it in mind the Landcruiser has no direct competition. And, you are not gonna buy Landcruiser for all the tech and most comfortable car like what you're saying, you buy that car to go places that your Navigator wont take you and so as youre Range rover why? Cause I have never seen or heard a Range Rover dealership in the middle of the Moab and any Mountains here in the States have you?
