    Yeah mate, unfortunately when I first saw your videos about taking it to the shop for Bore Scoring, I knew this was going to be a $12,000 to $15,000 job. I commend you on doing it right instead of on the cheap and then selling it off. You did it right! You have an amazing car now, it has a brand new engine just like when it was new but better! It was very smart to do the head and all the other little internal things like chains and bearings, all of it. The shop sounds like they know what they are doing and didn't lead you astray. I know there will be a day when I need to do mine, I am not looking forward to it. But these cars are aging and they will need Motor replacements or rebuilds. I very much appreciate you showing your struggle on TH-cam to prepare me when it happens.

    Cheers Joe, your previous videos encouraged me to walk away from a '07 Boxster S that a VW Dealer in Mansfield were selling just before Christmas. I was really keen but Dave at Strasse and your problems made me think again. Now that I've seen your invoice I'm more than "over" not buying the Boxster. Yeah it’s a huge risk buying an S. I would be all over a 2.7 especially if you can get the sport edition boxster. They are lovely! The 3.4 extra power is not worth it for the chance of bore score! Don’t be put off by the 987 Just go .2 or 2.7 car and you will be fine:)

    • @djdomj
      @djdomj 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoeTalksCars Agreed, at 0-60, you gain a few points of a second over the 2.7 with the 3.4 but you will never notice that unless you do a track day (and still may not!). The 2.7 is still only a a fraction of a second (0.4secs) slower that many 911 Carreras of the same generation so why take the IMS risk with a 3.4. which is why the 987.1 2.7 manual has jumped up in value and now are often more than the 3.4 S version (and there are less of them).

    Been lucky so far with my 987.2. I intend to keep the car way beyond my retirement (25 years from now).. that said, if I would have to pay 10k and it would bring me down the 25 years.. I would do it.. However, if I intended to sell the car within 1-3 years.. I probably take the loss and immediately and not fix it. Truly hope your 987 will last your lifetime ! Hoping you can discuss what was actually done to fix the scored bores. My 987.1 which spun a rod bearing at 70 k miles is being repaired extensively because replacement engines are scarce and I had some track upgrades already invested. Will include removal of the aluminum bores and sleeved to 3.8l. New pistons and rods. Minor crank journal repair and other internal upgrades like modern IMS upgrade, etc. All that and a new clutch w/light flywheel ( car 100% track use). That bill is quoted to be 24k. Ouch but, for 15 years of driving at track events I’ve been very fortunate to never have a big bill. Guess that lucky streak had to end. I do love the car same as you do so it’s worth it to me.

      Il have to try and discuss it in a future video but it had 6 steel liners put in, all top hat design so they don't slip. 6 brand new mahle pistons and loads of other stuff replaced. I agonized for a long time, trying to determine how I was going to get into my first Cayman. A 987.2 S was just too much money (and that's only getting worse). The bore scoring really had me hesitant. Especially the fact that I live in a cold climate, and only have about 6 months of the year to drive such a car.
    I really came to peace with getting a Base 987.1, after doing my homework. And after driving it for several months, I love it! I have no idea how much more powerful the 3.4l is, and frankly it doesn't concern me. The 2.7l has just enough punch for me. And still sounds amazing!!
    There's still 50 different things that can occur, and I could be looking at a major repair bill (some day). It's a Porsche....and that simply comes with the badge..

    Suspect a lot of P cars have that issue.....they are not "bulletproof" like many want others to think.....check out a wheel bearing on a 991 GT3......the knuckle is a 6000 track miles disposable at about 10k USD...each. ....makes a lotus seem brilliant.
    Question for you: what did they say about the chances of this happening again later? Is it a design flaw (feature as my local shop likes to call these things...)? Is the fix a complete fix or a restoration to ground zero and another go at the Russian roulette of bore scoring?
    Thank you in advance. Good for the world to know these data.
    Had a 996TT and a known transmission fork issue in second gear cost 6,000usd to fix...and they were doing me a favor and that was a discounted price at a cup car sort of shop...dealer would have been at least double that. Known issue..... Then the coolant leaks on those cars...8-10kUSD. Then a vacuum leak......etc. I used to think Porsche's were bulletproof. They may be but they seem to attract howitzer shells instead.

      That’s crazy! No such thing as a cheap or bargain Porsche. I was told they have rebuilt hundreds of cars and none have had further scoring, it does seem to stop the issue. Wow thats crazy! Porsche seem to be really bad at not supporting customers even when its an inherent design flaw from factory. Mine is a 2006 so they have the updated bearing. The 2.7 do avoid the bore score issue all together but I heard it was to do with the thicker block, the 3.4 is a 2.7 that has been bored out. Not sure how it makes a difference but It does.

For anyone else with bore scoring issues I would always advise going with Hartech. They have the best reputation for scoring rebuilds and your car will be a better bet when coming to sell. Hartech do IMS shaft and engine block exchange. Not sure about the cost but I think if you can rebuild engine yourself it might be possible to get nikasil liners into your engine for ~£8k (including bunch of tools). 3.9l is a dream! Now I struggle to see a 3.4 gen 2 for any less than 25k and 981 way more. I agonised over this decision for ages, but in the end I felt like it was worth it. I know someone who bought 2007 Cayman S with 130,000 kms for $37,000 Cdn from an Acura dealership. One week later, it had bore scoring and costed $30,000 cdn to rebuild. I’m not sure if dealership took some of the responsibility. I did see the ad originally and passed. Ended up getting 2006 Cayman S w/ 49,000 kms for same $36,500 as the bore score one. It was definitely Garage Queen condition, extensive options and owner documents. Owner had a newer 911 too. It’s been a couple months and the only fault is a creak on front left side, had a lift check done and it’s tight. The creak is likely from a coffin arm, there’s a boot on top bolt. Rubber boot might be cracked/torn. Bolt is tight as ever. My 3rd party warranty should cover it.

    In retrospect would you have considered putting the Audi S4 V8 engine. I know these can be fitted but would've needed a custom subframe and a different ecu. To get someone to do it would probably have ended with a similar if not less bill but would've ended up with an extra 60-80bhp. Weight wise it would've similar as the V8 is all alloy.

The thing is, you can’t put a price on a car that you have an emotional connection to (well, you can, but…), so you’re paying for your enjoyment and future miles in the car. If you feel like it was worth it, then it was. Enjoy!

    It is awful that a car needs that level of rebuild after 60,000 miles, especially a Porsche, but they will just state it is high performance to justify, what we all call Porsche TAX (which is wrong in this case because IMS is an issue that Porsche have swept under carpet - probably because sales numbers are so low, imagine a Ford Focus having the same issue, it would definitely have a recall!). Buyers beware - stay away from this pre 07 generation of Porsche unless IMS report undertaken (not just Cayman). The 987 is an amazing car and pleased you can still enjoy, it is appreciating in value too and definitely a future classic.

    I'm paying 6.5k gbp for rebuilding 987 3.2S. It was very early stage, no oil consumption, just a slight ticking on idle. The car is in the shop since August. I'm located in Poland ¯\_ಠ_ಠ_/¯

    • @JoeTalksCars
      @JoeTalksCars  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow ticking but no oil use. Mine was the other way round, in the end on the way to the garage it got the ticking but it was more tapping, like a person inside the engine with a tiny hammer. Sounded rough!

    • @NiceAsPie
      @NiceAsPie ปีที่แล้ว

      Ticking is normal on 3.2 you are paying a garage for nothing… and they are taking your money for nothing and it will still tick their after it’s common on 3.2 due to low oil pressure when warm at idle! They all do it even the old M96 engines do it there is a oil pressure spring that breaks down and needs to be changed to rectify that which is £4 on the internet. So sorry if your paying for a rebuild all I can say is you are being taken for a mug and whoever is doing it clearly doesn’t know porsche engines.
      The 3.2 cannot have bore score due to the liners being different and no oil use means deffinetely not bore score.

    Can I ask why you only had 3 of the cylinders replaced ? Did the garage tell you this problem can and will come again on the other 3 cylinders that wasn’t done ? And when it does you have to strip the engine down again.
    Also why didn’t they replace the IMS when they had the engine apart that’s the easiest time to do it and I know you would have the newer design but still it can happen and ain’t it better to be safe then sorry later and have that fail and need rebuilding again thanks to that ? I mean the bearing is only £150 and it’s a 2 min job while shaft is out when you split the cases.
    Sorry but if you wanted to sell this another buyer would be put off as you have done this very cheaply by doing ONLY 3 cylinders and I dread to think what liners the garage used and who machined it as if not fitted properly they will be scored again!
    I really wouldn’t have put this on TH-cam as if you ever want to sell this car porsche enthusiasts will want all 6 done and they all swear by hartech builds only. To be honest you would of been better stripping this down yourself and rebuilding it then burning money paying garages VAT and labour as that’s practically what you did and you could of rebuilt this engine by hartech with new liners , IMS , Bearings , and new pistons for £5000 all in and then parts to rebuild are about another £1000 so you have just gave money away from practically free and the car will not be worth nothing only having 3 cylinders done and any Porsche enthusiast will tell you that when you come to sell it.
    I know as I rebuild these myself I had the same issue on my 997 and 987 and rebuilt them both I have a very good machine shop who only charges £300 to do it and the liners are £1000 for 6 of them Westwood liners are great.
    Sorry but this must be the biggest con of the century and I don’t get why people buy Porsches and can’t work on them there selves ? It’s a enthusiast car and enthusiasts rebuild them they are sports cars and as such, need rebuilding every 100k if not sooner if it sees the track often.

    • @JoeTalksCars
      @JoeTalksCars  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thanks for the comment, this video was from a while ago but I do think I did state all 6 were done. The IMS was also changed as it wasn’t that expensive, labour is a lot of that and of course the whole engine was out. The car would have been way north of 10k for Hartech to do, I chose somewhere nearer to me that rebuild many of these cars with great success. They used steel liners and yes that’s controversial but fitted correctly there is no reason why they won’t be gone for many more years. The liners have a top hat design meaning they are going nowhere. I could jot have attempted a rebuild myself and was in a position most people are and that is to rely on the experts and pay labour and vat. The car is sweet since and I’m super happy with it. More issues have arisen but not as a result of the engine being rebuilt but more as a result of it being a 17 year old a Porsche and it being a bit of a pain in the bum. Thanks again for the comment, hope this cleared a bit up. Doing 3 cylinders would have been like you said a little pointless.

    • @NiceAsPie
      @NiceAsPie ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoeTalksCars thanks for your reply and please don’t take it the wrong way. Just in the beggining of the video you did state they voted and honed 3 cylinders at a cost of £350 so I assumed you only had the 3 done.
      As for steel liners that’s good to know let’s just hope they used nickel plated ones. And I’m with you on that that hartech are over hyped years ago they was the best but now there is many people and technology has moved on and I think any engineering shop can do it now.
      As for people doing it themselves I have a few people in my community who go rebuild these daily they buy them cheap and repair them like myself I might add.
      I think to own a Porsche and not be conned is to do it all yourself as for instance the price you paid for a rebuild I have only spent just over £7000 rebuilding my engine and that’s with doing all front coolant lines and all control arms front and rear for £7600 that’s what I mean what you paid is a rip off and realistically I don’t know if your aware but you don’t have to pay VAT to a garage I don’t know if your aware of that ? There is a loop hole that gets you out of paying it and also they are not allowed to hold your car.
      For me I think there is too many people getting Porsches and not understanding they are sports car and as such command a premium to maintain and even worse if your taking it to a garage! I would strongly suggest you really learn to do things yourself as if not you are really going to put people off owning a Porsche when this channel should be able encouraging people to buy them.
      By making them seem expensive to fix which they are not if you do it all yourself and porsche is incredible easy to repair! As I said in total restoring my whole 997 including bore score , control arms and all coolant lines front to back that’s £7600 yeah and think I bought my 997 2S for £10,500 because of the issues but now think how much I can sell that car for ?

    Is 10k really that much? Doubt i would be shocked by anything related to pulling the motor costing 10k. Watching the UK videos on Porsches, it seems everything associate with the cost to own and maintain a Porsche in the US are about twice the cost as it is there. You won’t find a decent low mileage Cayman for under 20-24k in here (Los Angeles) and the labor costs here are insane.

      $10k is a whole lot. For the job that was done, no but outside of IMS & bore scoring, these are considered quite reliable vehicles. It’s unfortunately a roll of the dice without a bore scope and a thorough PPI
