Get the Cayman! I love my 987.1 Cayman S. You're right that the base model has less of a chance of bore scoring. Find out why by watching the 4-part series on bore scoring on the PCA TH-cam channel. I recently installed the PCCM+ made by Porsche Classic, purchased through sun coast parts. Installed myself. Now I have a much better head unit with Apple car play. Anytime I see a 987 on the road, I know that's an enthusiast. You don't accidentally find yourself owning a 987. Find one with the sport seats. They are better than the standard seat you're sitting in.
Problem is IF bore scoring it does happen, is another Cayman’s worth of a cost to fix. Basically, you loose a 20k car without insurance to back you up. They should cost 10k on a good day just for risk of it.

I have a 2012 Cayman 987.2 base for around 2 and a half years now, and it's by far the best car i've owned. The handling, the torque, the everyday usability with the storage space, and even the quirky stuff like the pop-out cupholders, it's excellent. The facelifted interior in the 987.2s and Porsches after 2009 in general also look fantastic, taking away the absolutely cluster of buttons and streamlined it alot more, making it feel alot more driver focused. I've been saying for years that the Cayman/Boxster is the best sports car platform on the planet. Literally the only thing holding Porsche back from making it better than the 911 is the fact that 911 owners would lose their mind if they made a car that was better. If porsche gave the the cayman/boxster the 911's engine, and improved suspension, it would be better than the 911 in literally every way.

The seating position also feels much nicer on the 981. 981 seems to be aging well too. The boot however on the 987 is bigger and fits golf bags easier. But these are nitpicks. The best thing about the Cayman is handling on a curving mountain road, you drove it on the freeway and around town…EPIC FAIL. Go back and start again…
I have owned a base 987.1 for around a year now and absolutely love it. I have done multiple road trips, including a trip to Nurburgring and some track days and haven’t had any major problems. I can highly recommend getting one.
2008 Cayman base owner here, loving the Porsche. Came from a s2000 so somewhat missing the rawness of the Honda. Biggest issue I have is the tc/psm activating coming out of slower corners, even with it shut off. I autocross the car and can't really get the rear loose on slow corners. I think it activates the brakes and cuts power. Car does not have sport chrono so wonder if that would help. Tried searching the Internet for options but not much luck (disabling yaw sensor to kill psm does not solve issue). If anyone has solutions please let me know!
First time I drove a 987 it was simply the more exciting version of my 2002 5-speed Honda Civic, which is exactly what I was looking for. Love it. If you’re tall (6’5”+) make sure you sit in it. I can fit at that height and is fine for around town, but a 997 911 has more room if you need to commute in it.
This is great to hear I'm at the same height and was curious. Unlike 996 which I don't fit, the 997.1 or 2 are glorious in terms of seating position and space for tall drivers. In that regard 981 Cayman or Boxsters seem roomier than 982 oddly.
@@Nitrousbird I weighed up both for my last purchase and believe that both are amazing for their own reasons. I went for the S2000 in the end as servicing costs and reliability lead to a much lower cost of ownership. You really can’t work on the Boxsters that easily. More importantly the S2000 ironically feels more special than the Porsche. I did a track day in a 987 Cayman and the S2000 feels so much more unhinged, the interior feels more driver focused and the 9000rpm redline is to die for. The Cayman felt more capable but also felt extremely safe and as a result a bit less exciting to drive. The S2000 was also extremely iconic in pop culture with its features in F&F and its praise received by Clarkson which you just don’t get with the Boxster. If you want the faster, more confidence inspiring car with the nice badge then get the Porsche. If you want something that’s going to truly excite you and make you feel special as a driver then I think the S2K is the way to go. The maintenance costs and the widespread love of the car are also a welcome bonus.
As a valet I got to drive many 911s as well as various other porsche models, and a slightly tuned caymen is the only one I still think about. It was a great car.
C7 corvette is the way to go (although I do love the cayman) - you just can’t beat what the c7 offers! It’s one of the very few (maybe the only?) modern sports cars that combines lightweight, an NA V8, manual transmission, RWD, analog driving experience, and open roof if you want it. And then there's MagRide which is an absolute game changer. All Corvettes have a certain image, I get that... but if you get past that, it's one of the best modern sports cars IMO. If BMW or Porsche made a modern car with that formula (lightweight, NA v8, manual, analog, RWD, etc etc) it would break the internet. But, I get the vette image isn't for everyone. I'm in my 30s and I do wish the image wasn't so mid-life crisis haha. But that all melts away when you're carving up a twisty road with the roof open and rowing your own gears the v8 echoing off the mountains. And I know we can debate whether or not it lightweight ... its no Elise, but compared to other modern sports cars, its lighter than even the V6 competition ie Supra, Nissan Z, 911, M4, F-Type, etc. Miata is obviously lighter but slow, the only car I can think of with any grunt that's notably lighter is maybe Boxster GTS. When I was shopping, I really didn't want the answer to be Corvette. I really didn't like the image, but the more I shopped and test drove cars, the more I couldn't help but think it's the best modern affordable sports car on the market.
The C7 is peak Corvette. The C8 is nice but it's a different class of car. The C7 is powerful, handles great, sounds great, reliable, and is surprisingly daily-driveable. The interior is GM but the prices are GM too.
Few cars are as satisfying to drive as the 987 Cayman. The sound, the handling, the looks - it has it all. The latest cars may be slightly quicker and have more gadgets but also cost 5 times as much.
Thanks Filippo. I've had my eye on one of these too. This helped me consider the 987. This one sounds wonderful. I can see the fun on mountain roads and even around town. Watch Out Doug, Filippo has game.
996.1 manual c2 cab, you will love it and it will give you very similar feels as a covertible and +2 seats with more power, more room to red line, throw in fister exhausts/gundo hack and a wind deflector and youre golden. 996 is much more fully depreciated and even going up or at least holding value. 987 cayman is great and a 987 cayman S is one of the best track cars but as a top down gt cruiser and what you seem to like the 996 is for you.
You really do have to take it on a good twisty mountain road to get the most out of a Cayman. It really comes alive in those environments. You feel the mid-engine balance. Right near redline and on the edge of a cliff :-).
100% correct! I've owned a '06 Cayman S since 2008, and these cars shine on curvy roads. I owned a Mazda RX-8 prior to buying the Cayman. It was a great driver's car, but the rotary engine was the fail point nobody could live with. Mine had an engine failure, and after Mazda replaced it, I couldn't get rid of it fast enough! My Cayman S is an optioned out model with 71,000 miles on it today. I've owned lots of American Muscle cars over my life, like a 1969 American Motors AMX, 2 seater, 390 ci, 4 speed car, and even a few imports like a 1974 Datsun Z car. For anyone looking for a driver's car my vote goes to the Cayman S.
At least over here where they came from, these are the ones you (should) want while the 911 is the one you (probably) get because of outside factors or because you had this and needed more. I met a Canadian Dude (guess where? The first Tim Horton's from Ambassador Bridge😅) who parked an 06 Cayman S, complimented him on it and while we spoke I mentioned the point above. Nice guy. He left later with a "there's Cookies for you all at the checkout, enjoy your stay" We were 4 people, he'd bought 8 of their top of the range Cookies just for me saying "nice car dude" basically. Canadians...you actually HAVE to love them😅
I've owned over half a dozen different Porsche models since the late 1980's, starting out with a 914 and working my way up from there. I've been working for Porsche in the late 80's and early 90's and got to drive many different models beside the ones I've owned myself. Currently I have a Cayenne Turbo and and a Cayman S (987.1) and in my opinion the Cayman is the most fun of all the Porsches I've ever owned and/or driven. It's a true sportscar and yet it can be a reliable daily driver. Most of the "reliability issues" stem from cases where the car hasn't been driven frequent enough. Those cars suffer the most from just sitting around. My Cayman S already has about 140k Miles on the clock and never had or has any issues with bore scoring or the infamous IMS bearing. I expect one or both to accur eventually. But that's planned into the overall budget. The base model wouldn't have enough punch for my personal taste, since the 295hp "S" appears "just right" to me. However: I can see that even with only 245hp and less torque the Cayman can be a very satisfying experience to drive. Since I also own much stronger cars (i.e. a highly modified Corvette C5 with 500+hp, Mercedes SL AMG, etc...) I'd say that a comparison between a front engine Corvette and a mid- or rear-engine Porsche actually does not make much sense. The concepts are simply way too different. Same thing with comparisons between a Cayman and a(ny) Fiat or 3-Series BMW. The 987 Cayman - espacially with manual transmission - provides the most fun and sporty driving experience that rivals the one a Ferrari 348, 355 and even the 360 can give you - and that for a fraction of the cost of driving a Ferrari or other exotic. Cayman 987 vs. 911 (996/997)? Well, a 911 will cost more and yet eventually sell for more. Maintenance of a 911 isn't going to be any cheaper and the sound isn't any different at all. Both models are super "corner-happy", but the Cayman is a bit more stable (although PSM - "Porsche Stability Management" - kinda levels the field). In order to make a real difference one would need to switch to a 911 Turbo or a GT-variant and for the prioce of such an upgrade one can keep any Cayman up to scratch for a very long time...
Filippo, there's actually a new Porsche infotainment system, from Porsche, for both the 996 and 997 911, 986 Boxster, and 987 Boxster and Cayman. Plug and play, with a nice new responsive screen, CarPlay, etc.
Fillipo, you should totally test drive a nice example C5. Just bought a manual one with 25k miles as my new daily and it’s surprisingly comfortable inside. The ride quality is amazing too. I don’t think the interior is as bad as people say (maybe mines just in much better condition). They also drive so amazingly well. The convertible aspect and gas mileage is awesome too!
I don’t comment on videos too much but I’d just like to say that Filippo is excellent and should keep doing stuff like this after he buys his sports car!
I wonder about that too. I am 6'4" and tried a Boxster a few years ago. I could barely get my leg wrapped around the steering wheel and my knees were hitting the wheel when driving. Also the ceiling was too low. Gave me NA Miata vibes, which I also do not fit in at all.
I honestly think an e46 m3 is a fantastic option if you get a clean one but make sure you allocate some cash to do rod bearings, vanos and subframe. Also, they’re not going down in value from here, they’ll only go up you can drive it for years and still make money. And with proper maintenance they can be pretty reliable. Drive one next! Also love this series!
Doesn’t compare to a true sports car like this though it is still a big heavy sedan converted to be a sporty drivers car. Idk why people always talk about the E46 M3 but you don’t hear much about the Z4M which also has the S54, a much more ridgid chassis than the E46 (even the roadster), CSL brakes, quicker steering rack, better manual, and less weight.
911, Boxster/ Spyder/Cayman. All great cars. I tend to see the 911 as more of an everyday/touring car and the Boxster/Cayman as a fun exploitable sports car. All good fun, but I do love the Boxster spyders.
It's great that they are back down in price closer to where they probably should be. I have been following the 987 since they were new and almost bought one a few times. They Porsche tax was too much of aaa premium for what you were getting imo. They are awesome cars, but there are a lot of car options in the same pierce range.
What about a 2017-2023 BMW M240i? 4 seats, can get in a convertible, 340bhp, 500Nm (370lb) of torque, can get in a manual and actually good on fuel if you decide to be sensible! Also quite cheap now, around £15,000-£25,000 (so around $20,000-$35,000 (I think?))
Yes. The Cayman is better than a 911, it has always been and forever will be, the only reason why people have the wrong perception that the Cayman is inferior is because Porsche deliberately doesn't give love to the Cayman to this day. They will make the Cayman the greatest sounding thing ever, and not give it a Limited Slip Differential, Give it a Limited Slip Differential but now it has a 4 cilinder, gives it a 6 cilinder and a Limited Slip Differential but also EXTREMELY long gears so you cannot enjoy it. Then FINALLY give it shorter gearing (The shortest they could) and not only a 6 cilinder engine but the one from the GT3, and then proceed to not give it a manual so you can only enjoy that engine with a manual in a 911 😃, also, make it only in the RS model so it is in the stiffest suspension possible and not liveable, then give it supple suspension but now you have to deal with building the roof on the Spyder RS 😃 They have DELIBERATELY spoiled every chance the Cayman/Boxster chance had at being perfect.
I own a 991.2 base Carrera and a 987.1 base Cayman. I previously owned a base 987.1 Boxster for 9 years. The Boxster/Cayman is more fun to drive even though it’s not as fast and it sounds better since the engine is right behind you in the cabin.
I had the same 2.7 987. Unfortunately I can confirm they do suffer from bore scoring 😂 you can’t assume they don’t. But they are amazing cars, you get a proper sports car feeling
Filippo offers a great view on these cars, he seems like a regular, down to earth and relatable guy. Doug and Kennan are amazing, but its hard to relate with Ferrari or Carrera GT ownership 😂

In that regard 981 Cayman or Boxsters seem roomier than 982 oddly.
first gen cayman s owner here. its. so. good.
I have an 987 Cayman S -- absolutely love the car.
Great video, Filipio. I enjoyed all of it and was far more relatable than most reviews.
Can Fillipo review an S2000?? Please 🙏🏽
I’ll second this ^^^ 🙏
this is the 20k solution.
A Boxster S for the same money is a better performing car, so why?
Filippo is the new star of the channel. Relatable and genuine.
Joe average doesn’t know the difference between a CGT and a Boxster
More Filippo please! Have him review cars going for sale on carsandbids too since I like this style and video format too.
Big fan of Filippo's videos! He's incredibly relatable.
Fillipo is the jam at these drives. Keep it up gents.
Did this cayman sell or is it still available. If so I’m very interested.
It's cheaper here in China now! I just bought a 987.2 base pdk less than 15k$.
As a valet I got to drive many 911s as well as various other porsche models, and a slightly tuned caymen is the only one I still think about. It was a great car.
This series is great, please keep it going!
Definitely interested in seeing the final choice 😁
Love the Cheapo Fillipo vids. For this question of sporty, convertible and 4 seater e46 M3 or E93 M3 are the only choices, surely...
I need to know the wheels that are on this cayman! I would switch mine out for these rims, love the look!
Few cars are as satisfying to drive as the 987 Cayman. The sound, the handling, the looks - it has it all. The latest cars may be slightly quicker and have more gadgets but also cost 5 times as much.
Great video guys, but please work on the audio levels for next time. Audio was low, got loud, got low, etc.
Thanks Filippo. I've had my eye on one of these too. This helped me consider the 987. This one sounds wonderful. I can see the fun on mountain roads and even around town. Watch Out Doug, Filippo has game.
Absolutely loving Filippo content! Keep it up
996.1 manual c2 cab, you will love it and it will give you very similar feels as a covertible and +2 seats with more power, more room to red line, throw in fister exhausts/gundo hack and a wind deflector and youre golden. 996 is much more fully depreciated and even going up or at least holding value. 987 cayman is great and a 987 cayman S is one of the best track cars but as a top down gt cruiser and what you seem to like the 996 is for you.
I love how Fillipo spends half the video comparing the porche to his fiat 😂
Nice guy.
He left later with a "there's Cookies for you all at the checkout, enjoy your stay"
We were 4 people, he'd bought 8 of their top of the range Cookies just for me saying "nice car dude" basically.
Canadians...you actually HAVE to love them😅
The SL55 AMG next!
Hey I know this car!
987’s simply put, are just really fun. I’ve had mine for 3 years now - and even in stock form they are very capable cars.
How much is it?
@@MrJeepmarine$1500. Its called PCCM+ Plus. You can connect a backup camera as well.
Can't wait for more pizza reviews with Filipo!
How about a z4m? Verts can be sub 20 and I’m seeing some coupes under 30 even with good maintenance
Awesome content, Filippo provides a great POV and is a natural storyteller
Cheapo Filippo needs his own eponymous channel.
Do these have more legroom that the Boxster? I looked at a 987 Boxster a few years ago and it doesn't have enough legroom, I'm 6'5".
I wonder about that too. I am 6'4" and tried a Boxster a few years ago. I could barely get my leg wrapped around the steering wheel and my knees were hitting the wheel when driving. Also the ceiling was too low. Gave me NA Miata vibes, which I also do not fit in at all.
As a fellow cheapskate and 500 Abarth owner I must say I enjoy his videos.
This is almost the answer. The base 987.2 would give you more grunt off the line while still pulling hard to redline.
Can't wait to see what you actually get.
Fillipo you are the man, "camera crews" all around you, Doug does not🤣 Great video
Yes!! We need more filipo even after buys his sports car. Missed the Costco practicality test today tho.
Have you driven an ND1?? They do not lack torque. At least I didn't think so, driving one back to back with my e36 m3
You’ve convinced me! Great video by Filipo!
21:23 nice save Fillipo 😂
This actually was a fantastic review of this car
911, Boxster/ Spyder/Cayman. All great cars. I tend to see the 911 as more of an everyday/touring car and the Boxster/Cayman as a fun exploitable sports car. All good fun, but I do love the Boxster spyders.
Great car review!
It's great that they are back down in price closer to where they probably should be. I have been following the 987 since they were new and almost bought one a few times. They Porsche tax was too much of aaa premium for what you were getting imo. They are awesome cars, but there are a lot of car options in the same pierce range.
Fillipo should get his own series : Testing cars . I’d love to see him in a McLaren P1 GTR just ripping it 😂😂
What about a 2017-2023 BMW M240i? 4 seats, can get in a convertible, 340bhp, 500Nm (370lb) of torque, can get in a manual and actually good on fuel if you decide to be sensible! Also quite cheap now, around £15,000-£25,000 (so around $20,000-$35,000 (I think?))
Filippo's the type of guy to redline his coworker's Porsche while merging.
Great vid and review. 10/10 👍
Then FINALLY give it shorter gearing (The shortest they could) and not only a 6 cilinder engine but the one from the GT3, and then proceed to not give it a manual so you can only enjoy that engine with a manual in a 911 😃, also, make it only in the RS model so it is in the stiffest suspension possible and not liveable, then give it supple suspension but now you have to deal with building the roof on the Spyder RS 😃
They have DELIBERATELY spoiled every chance the Cayman/Boxster chance had at being perfect.
this is the one filipo
I’m here for the Filippo content. Any one of Doug’s cars (minus the A-class) costs more than I have cumulatively spent on cars.
Great video
great video, we need more of Filippo
I own a 991.2 base Carrera and a 987.1 base Cayman. I previously owned a base 987.1 Boxster for 9 years. The Boxster/Cayman is more fun to drive even though it’s not as fast and it sounds better since the engine is right behind you in the cabin.
I had the same 2.7 987. Unfortunately I can confirm they do suffer from bore scoring 😂 you can’t assume they don’t. But they are amazing cars, you get a proper sports car feeling
Please tell more people how good these are. I need the value of mine to go up.
Filippo offers a great view on these cars, he seems like a regular, down to earth and relatable guy. Doug and Kennan are amazing, but its hard to relate with Ferrari or Carrera GT ownership 😂
