I'm not necessarily a fan of falsetto singing, but it's always fascinating listening to Russell singing like that. He has really got a brilliant voice, and you can hear that here! I love listening to him whatever he sings!!
He is 70 years old now.. not many lead vocalist can still reach their old high notes later in life. I hate when when they changed the original vocal because of it. However Russell was gifted with his voice he can still reach what this song demands. brilliant.
This was recorded December 2014. The voice can change rapidly around 70 years old. I definitely prefer Sparks to lower their older songs than Russell has to sing in a key he barely reach anymore. One or two keys lower doesn't do much to the song itself, but much more pleasurable to listen to a singer that nails the tones. And no humiliation. Can't be joyful knowing it sounds bad. I mean, a perfect performance in a lower key oustands a bad one in the original key. And I love their music, and Russell's voice is beautiful, even though not as high pitched as 40-45 years ago. He's is only a human being, just born with an extraordinary voice! Respect! But if dear brother Ron is willing to change key... A different question.
Well, Russell may be a human being, but his voice is definitely superhuman! And nowadays it sounds even better than it did in the 70s, although he always had a very great voice.
I was at this fabulous concert at the Barbican London. Sparks were doing my favourite album of all time on it's 40th anniversary "Kimono my house" but with a classical orchestra. It gave it a real twist from rock. It's a shame it was never released as a proper album to compliment the original. I saw a certain frontman from Franz Ferdinand leaving after the gig too. Shortly after the FFS project emerged. Still fresh today, my sore throat after singing along with equator was well worth it. Happy days!!
Thought this would have at least 500,000 views by now ,what is going on? maybe everyone is conditioned to watching reality music shows ,its true Talent is an asset.
@@FumbleAIBO Why can't morons like you accept objective statements about a band who (sometimes) does not make good music... they do it just to keep the fans happy. And don't tell me about Spark's long and illustrious history. I've had their music since 1972, heard their 40 albums. And in relative assessment, this video is shite.
@@thedolphin5428 😁Poor little feeb, I'm sorry your brain is so smooth and your taste in music is total sh1t. Also, jealousy is not a good look on you, lmao
You're entitled to your opinion but you can hardly criticise the sound since this was obviously recorded on someone's phone. Unless you were there. Not that that I was.
@@Isi-1975 Obviously it is a phone recording. Duh. Sometimes a poor bootleg taping is worth it for the musicianship. This sure ain't. And equally obviously it is one of their worser performances, musically. From a wider view, I just don't understand why anyone would put up such a pathetic piece of content. Is it because "anything by a band I like is great"? Or just a way to fill up a yt channel for likes, subs, money? Just a waste of bandwidth. Needed deleting straight after the concert, imo.
The vocal genius of Russell Mael on full display here as he turns himself into one of the wind instruments in the orchestra.
That vocal performance is astonishing. What a vocalist!

Possibly my favourite Sparks songs- still.

Asa Russell explained he takes good carte of his voice and tries to get his breathing as good as possible and he succeeds.

This is in a lower key than the original version.

"I saw a certain frontman from Franz Ferdinand leaving after the gig too." - and Bryan Ferry.
Stunning vocal! Why is not this group more popular? Nice to see an orchestra backing -- these songs deserve it!
thank you, I've loved this band since 1971
bloody brilliant as ever….rock on with the hippo

....... Morrissey said they're the greatest band in the history and I agree with him 100%
Superb
Magical! Thank you for sharing!

Friday night on the park stage 9.15pm GLASTONBURY -cant wait
I'm watching this - and its March the 10th.... :0)
now that is hilarious and perfect!!!
Are you supposed to be somewhere else?
Where are you? I have been walking up and down for over three years now…
Nå har jeg sunget "Equator" som allsang sammen med brødrene Mael. For en opplevelse. Flott opptak også!
Is this song called “Equator”?
ik weet het
"-do-do-do-do-dooh"
que locasos esos tíos fanáticos de Sparks!, fueron disfrazados :)
I was at this, and at the LA one later. The Barbican lacks real intimacy as a venue. It should be torn down.
Shocking acoustics, and orchestral arrangement, below par vocals. A rubbish wank compared to the original. About 9 minutes longer than toleration.
And yet they're still famous, beloved, and a hundred times cooler and more talented than your sorry lame ass on your best day. Next!
