- In this video, I explain one of Animal Crossing's (GCN) craziest glitches that can crash your game or warp you to different places -- the most interesting of which being an unused beta testing map.

This recording was done with an HD community texture pack for the game ran through Dolphin, solely to make the video more visually appealing than a 480p output. Slight correction from Cuyler:
The technical reason why you warp to the beta map is because your scene ID is reloaded during the cutscenes when you exit the post office, rather than the map. When this scene ID is reloaded during a cutscene, it gets set to 0 so you get to sent to the beta map where scene 0 is set to play.

I am a programmer and I don't think it's wrong what you said, but maybe it could be considered misleading or incomplete by some, because there's no actual game logic telling it to default to anything, intentionally; it just ends up that way as an unintentional consequence of how the logic is set up. And to be fair it's probably worth distinguishing when possible.
@@R2Bl3nd Yep, this is why this correction exists. Scene ID '0' is still technically the "default" that the game sets when the cutscenes end up confused which is why this occurs. It just so happens to be programmed to play on that first map so you get warped there. So "defaulting to the first map" was a bit of an oversimplification, but again that's why this correction is here to rectify what you talked about.
Could you access the other beta maps by deleting beta map 0?

I feel like 80% of glitches in well made games can be explained by "we did two things at the same time that the game didn't expect and it put us in an invalid state"

@@IH8Reflorished the game loaded a cutscene that somehow disabled or ignored player collision (mostly because cutscene don't work the same as in game animations)
@@IH8Reflorished pure wall clips that aren't missing collision are still basically doing 2 unexpected things, for example, being stuck between 2 colliders, which can often result in getting pushed through one of the 2, or uncrouching while almost touching a collider, which makes your hitbox go over it.

I found full odds mirage isle on sapphire and no one believed me. They said they've never seen that island thus it doesnt exist. I then believed them and thought I was dreaming.

if i ever make a game im gonna put ridiculous, niche glitches like this one in my game on purpose. pulled out your sword while talking to an NPC with a name that starts with Z? fall through the map. make an object that only collides with the player character's feet, and if you clip inside of it you see a secret code that just crashes the game when input. find a way to move your character when in a cutscene and trigger a different cutscene, be greeted with a third cutscene with cats dancing. secret stuff like this is so fun to me

Now imagine what the code handling your bank account balance looks like - it was probably written before this game.
That's more or less any game.
Game programming is a little bit harder to do "right" since it's much more dynamic than a lot of software, while also requiring things to be done FAST. Ie, games do a lot of shortcuts for rendering stuff since it has to be real time, while stuff like blender that can take a week for a single scene are allowed to do things using more "proper" methods.
We technically do less "extreme" stuff like what you'd see in game boy color games, since we can rely on powerful hardware, but you still get some areas that fall apart at the seams, even in professionally made games.
I'd really like to see what the other beta maps have!
Also, why does the gyroid have a glitchy texture in the beta map?

The gyroid on the beta map seems to have incorrect texture references. A lot of these maps are carried over from the Japanese N64 version, so it’s likely they never even touched some of these maps.

@@Hunter-R. So object textures are determined by the map and not some memory stored somewhere that just gets referenced? It's not just an object that can be copy-pasted? How peculiar.
@@exterminator9676 This gyroid is a special case and is a different object from the normal gyroid. So textures aren’t exactly map-based.
This gyroid actually looks perfectly normal in the original N64 Japanese version, but was changed somehow when porting the game to the GameCube. This was either done on purpose to test texture cycling on random textures, or by accident and just never fixed since its only use was on this beta map.
You can also talk to this gyroid in the N64 JP release, but in this game they have no dialogue.

This is a great video, even coming from a non animal crossing player. I just love technical videos like this. The only thing I can say is that it's very saddening that a ~10 minute video is considered a "long one" nowadays. Videos like these are far more enjoyable the deeper you go in technicality which usually ends up being around 20-25 minutes from other channels I've watched (which is still short in my opinion. I just love longer videos)

I’m glad even people who don’t play the games can enjoy this! The original audio recording of this video was actually around 20 minutes, but I cut down a lot of it cause it was either super repetitive or just me rambling on and getting sidetracked. But I forgot I mentioned the video might end up long at the beginning, so it’s left in there.😅

I think its more of a strange line by the creator than any sorta indication of trends. Yes there's shorts and stuff but theres also ton of vids hours long that have way more views. even just 10+ mins is a very common target for many youtube creators and this one couldn't quite reach that
As a kid, I used to get ear destroying crashes sounding EXACTLY like 4:10 in Rogue Squadron 2 every now and then, including the player ship rotating into a weird angle. I wonder if it was a similar thing.
I did hunt glitches and try to get out of bounds quite a lot, but I didn't yet understand much about games and was afraid my CD was badly damaged. Glad that game doesn't have its own Resetti

That's actually cool that Boz accidentally wrong warped in front of Nook's. So in theory, you could technically use this wrong warping to cut even more time in a speedrun. Problem is wrong warp location seems to be hard to pinpoint, even random almost, if you haven't saved before, and may wrong warp you outside the main map if you haven't an event going on, and if the post office is on tile A2. So essentially, there is a lot of RNG that could be involved trying to get the best speedrun time in Animal Crossing.
Also, that name, Johnny B, has nothing to do with John Doe, or Jane Doe. Johnny B is EXPLICITLY a reference to the song Johnny B. Goode. And I know this, because Nintendo has used this song, referenced this song, or made their own tweaked versions of it. They downright have an obsession with it. Which even exists in Animal Crossing as obtainable music. But this reference to the song goes back as far as Earthbound, with the Hippie encounter, as well as the Mad Truck and Car encounters. Nintendo with Johnny B. Goode is like John Goodman with apple fritters and cocaine. You just can't imagine them NOT being together.
I've never played nor was interested in AC stuff before but I LOVED your technical breakdowns. Definitely gonna watch more.

one cool thing is that if you try to do this on a wii the game inmediatelly crashes, or that's what i think, maybe it's becuase i have a pal wii, and everyone that i saw having the game crash here has a pal wii, it gets to the map and it works for half a second and bam, it crashes.

Always left wondering with glitches like these how many people actually had it happen and either didn't care enough to share it with people or tried to and was called a liar before it was finally captured on footage. It doesn't seem like *too* coincidental of an occurrence for it to take THAT many years to finally happen when nearly 3 million copies of the game were sold. Dude imagine paying off your mortage and some stupid soccer event you didn't even know about commenced at the same time and caused the universe to cease.
This is random, but I'd love to see a more in-depth dive into the Crash Handler, such as the earliest chance to trigger it, the easiest way to make it happen, and maybe even all the possible "exception names" (The reason for the game crashing) that can be seen without cheats - think of it like a "Gotta Crash Em All" thing
Cutscene storage could probably be used to force other glitches. Could you visit someone and get the cutscene to show there? Wait...if you could get to spot that let's the game not crash during UI map when in beta map, could you have homebrew teleporting?
While the discussions of this channel seems a bit niche, I’m honestly all for it because I always found the original animal crossing to be the most fascinating technically and gameplay wise.

This glitch doesn’t actually save any data to the memory card, and oftentimes the game will handle crashes and force a reset, so nothing performed here should harm the console. Nintendo’s programmers are real strict about how game software can interact with the hardware, and it’s extremely difficult for a game to cause any harm to the actual console unless you go out of your way to do it.
So you should be good!

Daaaamn! That's some clean picture quality for this game. How did you do that? Do you use an upscaler?
This video (and probably future ones) was recorded using a community 4K texture pack for the game that you can use with Dolphin.
I tend to stick to console only, but there’s only so much you can do with a 480p output from the GameCube. Even running that game through a Retrotink 5x upscaler doesn’t look as good. So, for these videos, I verify things work on console and then re-record my process in Dolphin using the 4K textures to make the game more appealing to viewers.
This texture pack is actually pretty sophisticated and requires each of the thousands of textures to be redrawn by hand in order to scale to any resolution. It’s still a work in progress, but you can check it out here:
