Same! I love stuff like this. One of my favorite youtube creators is a guy who's making a custom Mario 64 ROM and he has gone into a ton of detail about how "the original Mario 64 code sucks, here's how I made it better" to damn near every line of code in the game, while still being, unmistakably, Mario 64.
I legitimately didn't know that Luck was a thing at all in Animal Crossing. I had assumed Katrina's fortunes were purely cosmetic, just flavor text people try to connect to the events that happen. It feels like not knowing about the mail system or something, just an entire mechanic I scarcely interacted with. Amazing video.
his videos got me into playing animal crossing (the 3ds version of it, i'm definitely not spending hundreds of thousands of Argentine pesos for a gamecube and the original Animal Crossing game)
You should play animal crossing because it's my favorite video game. New leaf is the best one for a beginner, New horizons is very polarizing. It has the best graphics and the most customization but I think you would get tired of it quickly.
Heck yeah I've been dying to know about Animal Crossing Feng Shui for so long you have no idea. Way back in ye olden days I was one of the people trying to brute force it on a massive online google-doc. Putting furniture in my room and then recording how many hits I got from the money rock, how much I got from the money hole, etc. So it's wonderful to finally have some closure on how all this works.
I agree that I like the luck system of New Leaf better. I got the Lovely Phone and would use it daily to see what my luck was and what the lucky clothing items were for that day. Then I would incorporate that item into my outfit to boost my luck. It would also help decide what it was I did that day outside of regular To-Dos. If I had good luck with a specific activity, I would make sure to add it to my day even if the results were not really beneficial. On the flip side, if I had bad luck with an activity, I would hold off doing things related to it until I had better luck. It helped keep things from getting too monotonous. Nowadays I never get my luck read because Katrina is so far away from all my regular activities that I can’t really justify going to her just for that. I wish that they had combined the phone mechanic with Katrina’s blessing so I would have a reason to go see her if I had bad luck that day and wanted to have her lift it.
Combine that with New Leaf having 2 time periods of mail delivery (9am and 5pm) it was easy to get your fortune read, then buy the lucky item needed, and waiting for 9am or 5pm. I also believe there were certain clothes that were always considered lucky.
Holy cow this explains why I thought oranges were a new fruit when I played New Leaf (I grew up with the GameCube version and then New Leaf was my 2nd AC game)
Well thanks to your video finally I know of why was darn hard to me to get oranges, actually back then (2003 year) I didn't know that the fruit was in the game until I got it by the islander on the Animal Island mini-game. Also you brought me back memories with the color classification of the items, never understood of why the Blue dresser was "Red" or the Ranch couch and armchair was "Green". Sometimes I thought that was by the extra item or fabric design that the item had but that made me more confused about it, like the Blue dresser had a yellow-red lamp on it, so why it was only red and not both?, ugh... better leave as it is and not overthink that 😂.
i didnt know feng shui had anything to do with luck tbh. i thought it was just for hha. as a suggestions i would love to know how sending letters work and how the game knows youre not just writing gibberish (if the game can even tell).
Oml, the Roost theme was just the icing on that whole tragedy. Congratulations on your well-deserved channel growth! Hope you get more eyes on you now! ❤
i’ve been playing animal crossing on gamecube every day for a few months now. just yesterday i got my first trip from katrina- your video found me perfectly. thank you so much for another excellent animal crossing video
YOOOO! Whenever I play ANY Animal Crossing game, my town fruit is always peaches for some reason. I had no idea that those peaches in the OG were actually helping me find the non native fruit as well 😁
Thanks for the link to the mega sheet. I always wondered how the feng shui color system worked, cause it seemed like my luck wouldnt change at all. Love your videos, and the original animal crossing. I look forward to whats coming soon.
Great video! Nice and well explained, while still being interesting too! And yes, would love to see a video on the duct tape and glue that holds the game together (:
I remember getting excited whenever I saw an orange in the original Animal Crossing (or rather, the GC version) because they felt so rare 😆🍊 I had always assumed it was a feature where you could get all but one type of fruit, and that you had to trade with a friend to get the last one. It's really interesting to find out that it's a bug. I'm really enjoying these videos. Animal Crossing was a large part of my childhood, and although playing the original again now, I know, would not be fun (I spent many many hours in it), being able to learn more about how it worked behind the scenes while reminiscing gives me the Animal Crossing hit I missed 😊 Keep the videos coming!
I love these videos. This game series has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember and as someone who likes to program and tinker with games, a whole channel dedicated to the technical side of this series is exactly the kind of thing I’d love to see more of. Thanks for these amazing videos :)
never played this game but i liked it a lot, your explanations of mechanics make it even more interesting to watch keep up the good work, you're one of the coolest people!
Great vid! I wonder if the official Animal Crossing guide book lists the Feng Shuei colors in their item info pages. Anyways, one super important thing about Katrina in the GameCube version is that she only appears once in a while, as a special event. And you're not told she's going to be there when you log on, because there's no Isabelle announcements. So it was always a super cool surprise when I'd suddenly come across Katrina's tent like once or twice a month. Rather than the daily chore it is in New Horizons, where you have to skip through lots of Dodo Airlines dialogue etc and wait through a boring cutscene.
I always wondered why I would occasionally trip a lot in New Leaf on certain days. I thought it had to do with rain or snow making the ground slippery.
I never played the original, and don't have any intentions, yet I've watched every single video of yours. They are so well made and so well written. Keep it up
IIRC, in Wild World only, Katrina has an option to specifically ask about relationships, and allows you to enter the name of a specific villager. That villager will be either happy or angry afterwards. I don't know if I'm remembering that wrong, though; it's been a long time since I've played Wild World.
These videos make me want Animal Crossing 1, specifically. I have all the others that I haven't touched in a hot minute, but the one I don't have (and the one from these videos) is the only one I want to play right now.
2:29 This statistic only works if every value has an equal chance of appearing, and because GCN RNG is deterministic, this is not true. It's still unlikely to see the same message twice, and impossible to see the same message twice in a row immediately, but the chances are much higher than shown here
o7's in chat for that balloon at the start. But seriously, that whole "duck tape and glue" seems very interesting and I wonder if the N64 to GCN port contributes to this. Also briefly mentioning New Leaf makes me interested in how that game functions too, from the unique things reverted in New Horizons to what exactly the Welcome Amiibo update adds/changes.
i started playing animal crossing GC because of your videos, and i experienced the native fruit peach = oranges thing that you mentioned! i was wondering about that up until you revealed the special peach-orange connection. super fun :+)
No way! I’ve been playing this game on an emulator on and off for the past few months and no wonder I haven’t been able to get oranges! I had no idea it was due to an oversight LOL I’ve been a fan of the og Animal Crossing for years and I’m still learning new things about it, wow 😅
I absolutely would love a video about the bugs in the game's RNG code. RNG has always been the most fascinating part of Animal Crossing to me, so knowing how it goes wrong is even more fascinating.
Well, this video made me glad that I always seemed to roll peaches as my town fruit now, even though apples were my favorite fruit and it would usually bum me out that I had something else as the native one.
I've been wondering why I'd never seen oranges in all my years of having this game! I didn't even know they were in the original AC until recently. I used to get non-native fruits by making backup towns and somehow in a strange case of meta-bad luck I never found oranges that way either, lol
I love technical videos on video games I don't play almost more than on ones I do, would definitely love to see more! It would also be cool to see more videos comparing mechanics directly to later iterations like you did here with Katrina
I'm SO glad I came across your channel! This is exactly what I'm looking for in Animal Crossing content. My fave games in the series are the Gamecube and DS version and it's hard to find newer videos about those games now. Keep 'em coming!!
Just wanna say I love your videos! I never played animal crossing, but I always rush to watch your stuff whenever you upload. Great work man, keep it up!
I would love a video going over how the game is held together with glue and duct tape. Reminds me of my own code! Awesome video btw! I don't even play Animal Crossing, yet I love these videos.

Oh man I remember using the king tut mask without realizing it's an unlucky item in City Folk. Younger me just laughed their anus out running around and watching as my villager trips, just running and tripping for literal hours. I'm not surprised though, I was also the kid that ate all my fruit instead of selling it.
The mask makes its return in New Horizons - and yes, you can fall over while wearing it. "Younger me just laughed their anus out" You must've had SO much fun playing City Folk.
ngl, the only reason this one had any idea Feng Shui was a thing was because we had a guide for Animal Crossing GC growing up. Though we still get which sides Yellow and Red are supposed to go on switched around. At least that doesn't seem to offer a debuff, based on what you said
Hey there! Ive been watching you since your very first video and its great to see how far you have come :) Animal Crossing New Leaf was the first game i ever owned by myself (i didnt have a game console until i was... 7 i think) so i connect quite a lot to your content! Keep up the good work mate! Cheers :)
I wonder how it would be to be stuck in a state with the minimum amount of luck - like, deducting luck through fêng shui manipulation as well as being given the max unlucky stat from Katrina
Would love to see more videos about this game, maybe even an n64 animal forest video discussing stuff that changed on the code side? just a thought :) i cherish your videos, they’re very well constructed and interesting and chill
So this explains why one time as a kid in new leaf I was able to get an extra money rock hit, but never again after that (I always saw the fortune teller as a waste)
I love this channel. Animal Crossing was such a vast enigma of a game; however, Hunter here is trying to explain and "decode" every small facet from luck to NES games! Please never stop!
Does a player's fortune luck last until it is changed again by Katrina or does it reset back to Neutral the next morning? I watched that section a few times and couldn't manage to figure it out
If you get “neutral” luck fortune from Katrina, you can just pay 50 Bells again to get a new luck. Once you roll any of the other luck states, you’re stuck with it until the next morning or you reset. Sorry I wasn’t super clear on that!
quite fun vid this time, feng shui section was quite enlightening. this weeks question from me: what’s your plan for this channel? do you wanna keep this as a side hobby, or eventually make this your main job. also would love to see that duct tape glue code vid
We’ll see where the road takes me, but for now this is largely just a hobby. Channel has grown quite a bit in just a few months, but it’s still nowhere near self-sustaining levels. I’m not going to do anything rash like quit my day job to pursue TH-cam, so I’ll likely just continue to work my day job and do TH-cam on the side unless something dramatic changes. By nature of my content, I don’t expect a super large audience to be interested, but that’s okay. I’ll keep doing it so long as I keep enjoying it.
I wish there was a deep dive on the exact mechanics of money luck. I looked and looked but I can't find any specifics anywhere. I put a dozen sunflowers on a dozen lemon tables on the west side of my second floor and I still only dug up 1000 bells from the shining spot. I should have 96 money luck, close to the 100 you get from Katrina, but I didn't even get the 10,000 bells you're supposedly guaranteed to get with "high enough money luck"...
Y’know I probably spend most of my time on new leaf and just you bringing up the new leaf systems for me excited. I’d love to hear more about them but I’d imagine an entirely different game on a different console probably running on a different engine, It would be a bit harder.
i wonder if the fruit rng bug was carried over to new leaf in a way, bc i had a 2 year old save file and i never, NEVER got an orange. my native fruit was peaches tho, so maybe i was just organically "unlucky"
So is Katrina's Fortune Luck reset back to 'Neutral' at the end of the day? Thanks for another vid! I love watching and learning cool things about the inner workings of stuff like this.
my town fruit in my most recent town is pears... this is very unfortunate but thankfully i can make another town on dolphin's other memory card to get oranges
I'd heard the thing about oranges being harder to obtain depending on your native fruit, but had never heard the explanation before. I'd love a deep dive into some other goofy programming oversights this game has :)
the fact you can trip and lose your balloon is actually so fucked up lmao
its only if you sprint
Imagine an old lady does a little dance and sings about a monkey playing hopscotch in an airport and suddenly everyone hates you

Cheers :)
Man, I love it when my luck is determined by random numbers in the code.
I wonder how it would be to be stuck in a state with the minimum amount of luck - like, deducting luck through fêng shui manipulation as well as being given the max unlucky stat from Katrina
It’s always a good day when Hunter uploads a video
I always wondered is it possible to mod in new furniture into the game? And if so what would the item cap would be.
Katrina wasn't lying...
She never does. She knows all, she sees all, she HEARS all - and she could be the mysterious "Knight" we've all been hearing about in Deltarune!
Would love to see more videos about this game, maybe even an n64 animal forest video discussing stuff that changed on the code side? just a thought :)
i cherish your videos, they’re very well constructed and interesting and chill
I absolutely want a video on all the bugs, it would be fascinating, heh.
I pretty much consider you the Illusory Wall of Animal Crossing. Loved the video!
Illusory Wall?
@@Most-sane-deltarune-fan does in depth explanations on the Dark Souls series, akin to things like this
@@shiycopper I see.
Definitely want to see a video on Animal Crossing's code oversights!
I never knew I was lucky to have had peaches as my native fruit all these years until now.
Yes a video on bugs/weird code!!
Another amazing and interesting video Hunter!
Awesome video! I'd love to see a dedicated video on how buggy the code is, I think it would be really good :)
I would really like to see a video on the bugs and glitches!
I really hope you make a video on animal crossing's code, it's so interesting when you explain how this game internally works
I swear that oranges are the most common starting fruit in Wild World, but I don't know if that's actually the case.
I got them in New Horizons, so...
I'd love to see a video on bugs and weird code in animal crossing.
🪲
@@dannyboots Not THOSE kinds of bugs!
I am intrigued by these HD clips of the game you use. the resolution is so high on the textures it looks strange
Watching your videos just makes me want to go back and play Animal Crossing on the Gamecube.
babe wake up new hunter upload
Omg mouse cursor on screen at 9:15 this video is literally unwatchable!!!
I kid. Great content, love deep dives into games like this! Subscribed 💚
I didn't see the cursor.
i wonder if the fruit rng bug was carried over to new leaf in a way, bc i had a 2 year old save file and i never, NEVER got an orange. my native fruit was peaches tho, so maybe i was just organically "unlucky"
Best new content on TH-cam
I don't even play AC and i love your videos
This happened to me. It's why I stopped carrying balloons around.
this content reminds me of Stryder7x. (keep it up, i like it)
My GameCube town has Apples. Damn.
I lost my anch cartridge, this makes me cry
Every one of ur vids, (I 100%ed as a normal player for the first time, when I was young)
So is Katrina's Fortune Luck reset back to 'Neutral' at the end of the day?
Thanks for another vid! I love watching and learning cool things about the inner workings of stuff like this.
PLEASE make a video about the code of the games! I love videos like those!
I'd love to see a video about oversights and stuff like that in ac!
i love silly code oversights in older games
I had NO IDEA about relationship or unpopular luck in the old games. I guess I never got those. I tripped a lot though….
This video was amazing. Please cover the bugs/coding oversights, that’d be amazing.
love your videos :) love your unique topics you talk about unlike many other ac youtubers😝
my town fruit in my most recent town is pears... this is very unfortunate but thankfully i can make another town on dolphin's other memory card to get oranges
do you know how he got his game so crispy?
@@idklolwut Mods and texture packs.
I'd heard the thing about oranges being harder to obtain depending on your native fruit, but had never heard the explanation before. I'd love a deep dive into some other goofy programming oversights this game has :)
