Now I get why DJI dumped so much money into developing an ultra-low-latency digital FPV system... it was part of their engineering path towards the wireless video system they used in the Ronin 4D.
yeah was a smart move because they put that time / money / effort into that technology might as well make more money off it and provide awesome products

They're *actually* doing things differently and dispensing with a lot of established, old-fashioned camera bullcrap, that's great. It really does seem like someone on the DJI team saw Niko's video and took it to heart.
Especially the timeframe makes sense. DJI must have realized that a lot of their drone tech could be adapted to make cameras better. The wireless monitor looks like it is using FPS video tech, the Lidar and distance sensing from obstacle avoidance, and lenses, focus, + gimbals from the drone camera mounts.
The lidar focus system what a cool idea. Imagine that in a next iteration, they will let you record a Z depth data as a separate file. That would be super useful for post purposes.
It's rare that a company just makes and sells an all out god-tier product without any weird catches and sells it openly at a decent price. Very, very well done DJI.
not rare,,,,, for Chinese companies. Due to competitions and potential risks of unauthorized duplications (clone), Chinese tech products always stuff as many top end features as possible in order to top the market share quickly. Downside is that the companies might jeopardize their sustainable profits. However, DJI have been doing great so far.
@@peterlaikc China is an extremely fast evolving market. Many companies would constantly release what's best to them at the moment to the market. DJI doesn't seem to be doing that, though, they are in a niche market after all.
As a disabled videographer/ photographer Yall don’t know how long I’ve been waiting to hear about a camera/gimble system like this. Like I’m getting chills lol.
@@deepghosh7626 Lots of people in that community prefer the term 'disabled' because they don't see it as a horrible thing to need help or not be able to do certain things and prefer to take it in stride. To many it's an "I'm disabled. And that doesn't change my value as a human being whatsoever" thing. But different people in the community or really, any community, especially marginalized ones, have different preferences and ways they want to be addressed because they're not a monolith. What I've learned over time is just that you should respect what someone prefers as much as you can. So, for me, when I see someone refer to themselves as specially abled, disabled, person with a disability, or different labels in say, the LGBT+ community, I go with that if I can.
@@Saad-A16 I'm under the impression that disabled is a somewhat regressive term, people are born with different capacities of they develop capabilities. So, they are different from us and hence' specially abled'
@@deepghosh7626 I understand that, and that's not necessarily wrong, but many people you'd refer to as specially abled wouldn't like that, including many of the activists fighting for rights and more inclusion. For me, personally, even if I don't like how a person identifies themselves, I would refer to them as such, since that's what they've indicated they like. Unless it's a slur akin to the n-word, which I don't think disabled is even if you consider it a slur. If you wish, I think there's multiple articles written by people who you'd refer to as specially abled saying they prefer the term disabled most, and more so than person/people with disability/ies that'd better explain it than I could.
My thoughts exactly. I went and checked the price and it’s “only” 7K. Like that’s 20x more than I’ll ever spend on a camera but after they showed everything it has built in that used to be a whole extra product I was guessing it was gonna be 15ish. The fact that it’s actually affordable for semi-pro film makers is honestly so cool to me.
This is actually exciting af for us indie filmmakers. You guys are forgetting that this is not a camera most of us will buy. But you can be damn sure I’ll rent it for a production. It will be expensive but all the features also SAVE money. Amazing product
This may have been a 15 minute long advert but the raw passion you guys have for the tech make it feel like a documentary. Really nice to see someone take the ‘perfect camera’ video and make it happen.
The crazy thing about this to me, is that despite it's two main flaws that Nico mentions at the end, the cost is actually *pretty fucking good* at $6700 USD. Don't get me wrong, I (and most of us here) can't afford this, but here's the thing: By the time you buy a nice camera ($3500+/-), a nice gimbal for your nice camera($1200+/- and rebalancing etc.), a nice wireless setup for your nice camera(hundreds), and some way to pull focus in a nice way($$ and many man hours), you will have probably met or actually EXCEEDED the cost of this camera...Once you have this setup, you STILL won't have 4 axis stabilization, and you *absolutely* will not have the LIDAR autofocus/focus pulling. ...So not only is this a revolutionary camera, the price is MORE than competitive for what it offers, apart from a couple downsides (the lenses, which can be addressed) and the RAW format. Really quite amazing.
The camera body for a pro camera is usually more than that. I wonder if they will make a more modular one in the future, since not everyone will need the gimbals, or will want to build up their system over time, but at this price I feel they are going to crush the competition.
@@excitedbox5705 If I had to guess, prooobably not. Since DJI doesn't have the brand recognition (when it comes to cameras/sensors anyways) that RED, Sony, blackmagic etc. do, people would be wary of purchasing the body itself, which I also think is where most of the cost is. Since DJI has tons of experience making gimbals and drones etc. I have a feeling that the reason for this price is that they can build everything around the camera relatively cheaply, and therefore sell it at the price point it's at. The body itself (if I had to guess) would probably not be that much cheaper to buy. I have a feeling this is their push to try to make a name for themselves in the professional camera space, and after this "flagship" product becomes successful they might start selling bodies by themselves.
One of the most amazing things about that integrated gimbal is that it only needs to move the components that need to be on a gimbal. Only the sensor and the lens basically. On third party gimbals you are often stabilizing the battery aswell, or the storage media, the cpu of the camera, the heatsink on that, all that dead mass that absolutly doesn't need to be stabilized.
@@SenseiSethdamn seth you in every comments section on youtube, from martial arts to camera's keep up the activity, (edit) I expect to see higher quality video's as well since your here
Absolutely incredible. I wonder how long before someone shoots a whole movie with just that system. I was expecting this to be 15-20k but it's only 7k. It's actually a reasonable price.
All the folks saying how expensive this camera is sure make me feel old... When I started out my first purchase was a Sony V5000 - it shot Hi8 (!) and was a giant shoulder-mount camera and was about the same price as the DJI. If I'd wanted broadcast quality like a Betacam SP it would've cost 50K... As for a filmic look, well then I'd need at least 100K for a basic Arriflex package (and would need a crew to use it and record sound and would need several more thousands for Post Production!). Seriously we are sooo spoiled for choice these days. Amazing time to be a creator and I wish I was 20yrs younger! :)
Honestly when I went looking for the price, my expectation was it was going to somewhere between £15k and £25k (about $20k to $28k US). DJI have achieved an astonishing price point! I think perhaps many people complaining at the price, are perhaps comparing this to cameras and gimbles more suited to personal vlogging. If you look at this as an alternative to something like a $2k - 3$k Sony, Canon, or Nikon plus a handheld gimbal, and make the mistake of thinking these are comparable products, of course it will appear expensive. But the same is true if you do the same with a BMW M3, and a Porsche 911 GT3 RS.
Niko, I love the passion you brought to this video and the passion corridor digital brings to the channel. Seeing you discuss the paradigm shifts was awesome and you explained them all so well that I a layperson could properly appreciate this awesome camera.
Honestly, Wren needs to become the official spokesperson for one wheel because that montage made me want one more than any other video on this channel.
This came out of nowhere and it's crazy how much they nailed on their first try. Dji has dominated the drone and gimbal market by listening to consumers, I think it's only a matter of time before they take a decent pie out of the cinema camera pie too. It's crazy to think that this company used to be just a camera accessory manufacturer.

@@maximilliannewcombe1719 Ok, the resolution is probably also lacking atm since depth mask is not the main function of the infrared camera. That's something they could improve in the future, especially now that they'd have a double use for the hardware. How proper depth sensor is not part of every high budget film camera is beyond me. With high enough depth cam resolution you could pretty much ignore greenscreens, just film anywhere and get a perfect matte every time!

I saw this and instantly decided that i need this camera. Have always wanted a Red. Either the Gemini, or one of the better models. But while they arent too expensive when it comes to professional movie gear that is actual high theatrical quality (just look at movies filmed with red, like The Revenant and more). They are way more expensive than anything i can afford. Especially since the Gemini itself is 19k USD. That is without gear needed to get it to actually work proberly. You still need lenses, rigs, and more. It simply becomes too expensive, to the point where i just cant afford it. Now i love the red, they have exactly the look and depth i love in movies, even raw without editing or using filters. And thats why i at first focused on that camera. But again, you need to buy so much stuff along with it to actually have a functioning camera, and even more if you want an easy to work with camera if you arent filming with a larger crew and with a decent and professional movie budget, like blockbusters or smth. And its just too much work and money for me who rn dont have any possibility of getting a crew like that. This camera though. Damn. Everything that you have to buy separately with the red, you just get in this camera (except for some things ofc). And not only that, i checked the price. And idk if this is actually the price for it or if its just the price for ordering it before release, cus ngl it seems very cheap for what you're actually getting. But this camera is about 7k USD. Now idk if the actual filming quality of this camera is to the level of a red, so far i would say its close enough to the point where i dont care if the red is higher image quality, cus i can barely tell. And yeah, a red you can swap into many different rigs and gimbles, and you can put alot of different gear on it, and its a very flexible and varied camera in that sense. But you still have to buy all this stuff separately and use time getting it to work. Which 1 is SUPER expensive. And 2 extremely time consuming. If u can get this camera for 7k and all you need is just to but lenses separately (which the webside has as well) then screw wether or not a red or any other cinema camera has better image, and more possibilities. This makes work as easy for you as possible, and gives you everything that you absolutely need, in one package. And a relatively cheap one.
@@Traversky433 but you KNOW this won’t be the only version DJI comes out with, so I’m sure they will come up with a way to mount bigger lenses. Maybe a bigger version of the whole product.

What’s crazy to think about is how Animation for years could do things that real world cameras couldn’t do and thus made it more unrealistic. This camera seems to see what animation could do and did everything they could to replicate it. This is going to look amazing for so many new movies coming out!
This is pretty insane and as someone who sometimes does 1st AC, that LiDAR focusing sounds amazing. Looking at a monitor while the Cam Op slowly starts walking backwards at a different speed than the actor with a 85mm lens on aperture 1.4 is a pain in the ass. And the fact that you get the things in one package is just wonderful......if only I had the money to buy it right now ^^
I have it now and absolutley love it. Drawbacks are the slowmo 50/60frames per second is only 2:39:1 ratio. Great for short or Feature films , but corporate clients or TV don't want that mixed in with 16:9 footage. So either you have to crop in the 2:39:1 footage or do the whole shoot with 2:39:1 aspect ration in mind and put markers on the 16:9 footage for framing.
That's insane, huge props to DGI for stepping up the game with an actual new/innovative product, apparently a huge potential to change the industry despite the minor downsides like the RAW codec.
I swear you guys have probably some of the best first impressions/breakdown videos about camera equipment and visual effects I've ever seen. The DJI video released certainly peaked my interest but you using some live examples of how good the camera and it's accessories are really convinced me that this is going to be an incredible piece of equipment and a game changer. I don't think this'll be an ARRI killer, but it's certainly going to push many to achieve the same standards DJI just opened up with this Ronin 4D. Great retrospective, I can't wait to see the type of on-set use of this camera for your videos moving forward.
Absolutely love the review! One thing to keep in mind is the £8,000 price tag is mainly for convenience. 90% of the features in this already exist, many of them already supplied by DJI themselves. For example using a gimbal (£700), a 4-6k raw camera (£1500), DJI's Raveneye where you can control the live settings and motion of the camera on a connected external monitor (£200) and the new DJI 3D-Focus add-on which automatically adjusts the focus based on sensors and distances (£200), so all in all, you'd get the exact same thing for
@@maverickdigital5410 Cinetape came out in like 2012 if I remember correctly, its ultrasonic too. Most are. The LR2 is the closest thing to this.LR2 is obviously much more expensive and has many more tools. With DJI, Its a cool feature, ill admit, but I would personally like to test it out side by side on a LR2 setup. I don't need the image from dji (which is still cool) to see where I need to be focused, I can just use the readouts from one the the LR2 readings and be able to tell the distance from someones hands to their face. I could see the image being distracting. Or just know the distance old school haha.for $400 i don't expect much. A lot goes in to these types of measuring devices, angle of beam, degree of accuracy, haze/fog tolerance, ability to have an offset. I don't think DJI is going to revolutionize wireless focus. They tried with a hand unit years ago and it didn't work. Im sure their is some latency in their "motors". Again, its cool what they are doing, but I think high end / professional sets will continue to use industry standard tools. Its good to see innovation and creativity, but there are always trade offs with stuff like this. EDIT: also these tools are secondary in my mind. I don't ever go 100% off of these or limit my ability by needing them to accurately pull.
I work at a leading rental house as a video technician where my job focuses on video builds and customer outreach to go through gear. I’m pretty pumped to get hands on time with this camera and I know we’ve already got some pre ordered. I’m curious as to the limitations of non DL mount lenses as customers will surely want to use other glass and I’ll be the one testing out the builds for sure. The LiDAR focus system looks sweet as does the steadicam like gimbal. I also hope DJI comes out with some updated DL mount glass and as Niko stated and updates what codecs the camera can shoot in. I’m guessing it won’t be long before I get customers wanting to put Zeiss CP 2/3 lenses on them or Sigma Cine primes. I admire DJI for being innovative, hopefully this is a kick in the pants for the larger camera companies.
Those are some gorgeous tracking shots on the one-wheel, knowing they're not coreographed makes it more impressive. The negatives seem large if managable for now, but they're so outweighed by the positives, hot damn. The LIDAR focus system is genius!
@@freddybell8328 they can’t be too much, they’re really small and usually that means (to a point) easier to manufacture. Also, I just looked up the specs and you can use something like 28 different Sony M-mount lenses without recalibrating for weight.
I'm really glad that every time when youtubers I watch, like you, talk about crazy image stabilization, the chicken video made by Destin from SmarterEveryDay pops up :D
All these shots of Wren on a one wheel are amazing, I just have this worry in the back of my mind of Wren hurting himself because his bones are fragile like a baby and then he falls at the end lol
The big innovation I keep expecting to see but which never seems to really come to fruition are "light field" cameras like the Lytro, where the sensor measures light rays in a three-dimensional way which has some really cool feature; first, you can focus each shot *after* shooting since everything is essentially captured in focus at the time, and you can blur out background and foreground later. It also eliminates the need for green-screen, because you can use the distance to cut out the parts you don't want. No idea why it's so slow on the uptake, because that has always seemed like a game changer to me, but the technology has been struggling to gain ground for a while now (more than a decade).
It was always that way. DJI is the brand used in every drone shot for big budget cinema. Their Matrice is used by everyone in the movie industry. Now it's the S1000, which is now being used for emergency services too.
Can we all give a big shoutout to DJI for making an amazing product the first go round! When you give an artist an amazing tool then the art they create will be all that much more amazing. Happy to see a company doing things the right way! ♥️
This is honestly mindblowing. The craziest thing is that compared to competitors like RED it's not even that expensive. $12k for a full camera system with all the accessories, nothing is even sold separately save for the lenses. Truly unlike anything else.
I think the biggest advantage of this DJI Ronin 4D cinematic camera system is that it significantly saves human resource expenses, significantly reduces the cost and difficulty of the project, and significantly reduces the time for project preparation and shooting. For example, for a project which used to require four or five persons, with this system, it only takes one or two persons to complete. In terms of long-term operation, the cost of human resources is far more than the cost of camera equipments, so this is the biggest advantage of this system in my opinion.
Thats the magic of technology really, it makes things easier and faster so that you can center on the creativity of your idea instead on how the fuck are you even going to make that work
How can wren be so dorky and yet so cool at the same time?? My brain is trying to reconcile how these two opposing forces have melded together. Love you guys, awesome video
It still blows my mind how we just get in the way of ourselves in tech progression just to get that yearly coin. Reminds me of the lightbulb convention.
I'm curious to know the carry weight for the gimble. DJI's lenses are expensive if one had to buy them along with the camera. There are mount adapters, but some lenses weigh a lot.
I've always thought the use of lidar would be great for autofocus. And wow! Someo did it! Lidar has so many potential implications and i feel like many companies are overlooking it.
I still remember when I first got an Osmo Pocket. After flying their drones, I thought it would be neat, but I thought of it more like a toy still. It was amazing, though, how easy it made recording video having that integrated gimbal camera (even for still photography, I could take super long handheld exposures and automatic panoramas). It's exciting to see how much they've scaled up this technology (the chicken-head thing is crazy). You can literally run-and-gun things now that would have been impossible before.
It would be great if they could make an affordable 4d stabilised Pocket-style consumer level camera. LIDAR probably couldn't be made affordable (?), the existing pocket wireless is fine, but 4d stab would be great.
I don't even shoot videos on my phone but I couldn't help feeling super excited for this camera. Such a cool invention. The team who developed it should be very proud.
I think the groundbreaking thing DJI did was put this all into one camera, and made a great prosumer-pro camera for the price! However a lot of these features aren’t new. The LiDAR sensor for follow focus isn’t new at the pro level; a product call The Light Ranger has existed for about 5 years now, and that integrates with any lens. Panavision’s DXL2 has been able to offer integrated wireless to Teredek Bolt receivers for about 5 years as well. A lot of DPs I’ve seen prefer the look of old glass as well, most of which have not, and most likely never will be integrated with built in motors. So again super cool that they created all of these a such a cheep price, but I don’t think I’ll be seeing this on any big film sets.
That's the point though, that this technology isn't new per say, but it's now at a prosumer cost and integrated together. Lidar was like $70k not long ago lol
The only thing they need to add is drone ability. Would be amazing if t blades could unfold at the top and the small lens section detaches allowing it to fly using the uisng the large screen as a mobile control unit. Obviously this is pipe dreams but worth putting on the wish list.
Perfect? What about increasing backlighting for the external controller screen based on real-time light levels? The controller looked like it was struggling out in the natural sunlight.

Due to competitions and potential risks of unauthorized duplications (clone), Chinese tech products always stuff as many top end features as possible in order to top the market share quickly. Downside is that the companies might jeopardize their sustainable profits. However, DJI have been doing great so far.

As a disabled videographer/ photographer Yall don’t know how long I’ve been waiting to hear about a camera/gimble system like this. Like I’m getting chills lol.
Bruh, you're specially abled not disabled.
@@deepghosh7626 it's all about perspective
Me, broke and not a filmmaker: "Hmm, I should get one of these."
@@walkermetyko1745 same, I said if this camera is under 10k then its a game changer. then I saw 7200 and I was blown away.

Just like this side scrolling comment section on TH-cam. Love it 👍
This may have been a 15 minute long advert but the raw passion you guys have for the tech make it feel like a documentary. Really nice to see someone take the ‘perfect camera’ video and make it happen.
The crazy thing about this to me, is that despite it's two main flaws that Nico mentions at the end, the cost is actually *pretty fucking good* at $6700 USD. Don't get me wrong, I (and most of us here) can't afford this, but here's the thing:
By the time you buy a nice camera ($3500+/-), a nice gimbal for your nice camera($1200+/- and rebalancing etc.), a nice wireless setup for your nice camera(hundreds), and some way to pull focus in a nice way($$ and many man hours), you will have probably met or actually EXCEEDED the cost of this camera...Once you have this setup, you STILL won't have 4 axis stabilization, and you *absolutely* will not have the LIDAR autofocus/focus pulling.
...So not only is this a revolutionary camera, the price is MORE than competitive for what it offers, apart from a couple downsides (the lenses, which can be addressed) and the RAW format. Really quite amazing.
No joke, I assumed this camera was around $12k to $15k. This is an insane price for such a capable machine.
i thought you were mistaken, maybe missed a 0, but nope, this thing is UNDER?!? 10k? holy cow thats insanely good value!
oh no way, i thought the this camera would be atleast 20k, $6700 is way too cheap for that.
The shot with Wren doing that trick with the dust was so AWESOME, nice work
One of the most amazing things about that integrated gimbal is that it only needs to move the components that need to be on a gimbal. Only the sensor and the lens basically.
On third party gimbals you are often stabilizing the battery aswell, or the storage media, the cpu of the camera, the heatsink on that, all that dead mass that absolutly doesn't need to be stabilized.

If people think this camera is expensive they really need to look at how much a Red is…
great comment couldnt be more true
Shoulder mounted is still good. Gimbals are so overused

Absolutely love the review! One thing to keep in mind is the £8,000 price tag is mainly for convenience. 90% of the features in this already exist, many of them already supplied by DJI themselves. That focus line is absolutely ground breaking.
It's almost like their drones were only a research and financing platform and this is the actual product.
It was always that way. DJI is the brand used in every drone shot for big budget cinema. Their Matrice is used by everyone in the movie industry. Now it's the S1000, which is now being used for emergency services too.
Full filming production level with this camera. Mindblown!

This is honestly mindblowing. The craziest thing is that compared to competitors like RED it's not even that expensive. $12k for a full camera system with all the accessories, nothing is even sold separately save for the lenses. Truly unlike anything else.
Dayum the sequence form 11:10 Hats off to the operator and the camera
I think the biggest advantage of this DJI Ronin 4D cinematic camera system is that it significantly saves human resource expenses, significantly reduces the cost and difficulty of the project, and significantly reduces the time for project preparation and shooting. For example, for a project which used to require four or five persons, with this system, it only takes one or two persons to complete. In terms of long-term operation, the cost of human resources is far more than the cost of camera equipments, so this is the biggest advantage of this system in my opinion.
Thats the magic of technology really, it makes things easier and faster so that you can center on the creativity of your idea instead on how the fuck are you even going to make that work
Looks like a whoooole lot of parts that can break and start acting up..

I'd love to see an update to this video 2 years on. Just how much did this influence the way you all make videos?
Most comprehensive review of this camera I've seen so far. Thank you. It is a serious piece of kit
The only thing they need to add is drone ability. Would be amazing if t blades could unfold at the top and the small lens section detaches allowing it to fly using the uisng the large screen as a mobile control unit. Obviously this is pipe dreams but worth putting on the wish list.
That would most definitely push it past $10k
It’s not what you’re asking for but the Inspire 3 is now a thing and it plugs into multiple large screens
Perfect? What about increasing backlighting for the external controller screen based on real-time light levels? The controller looked like it was struggling out in the natural sunlight.
