Great video. I think there is a big difference between those coming to stay and those coming for vacation. If just coming for a few weeks I almost think it's better to meet the professional GF. No broken hearts or commitment, you get to try the living in the PI with a lady, tour guide, etc. So it costs you a phone, money well spent. IMO this is very different than someone coming to stay or looking for a life partner. I think the most important thing is being honest with yourself about what your actually looking for. Can you stay, do you want to bring her back to your country, can you work online and move abroad now or are you just looking to enjoy a vacation with a nice lady?

    • @bobbruce4135

I think a 3-week GF costs more than a phone unless you're tall and hot. Many of us have no desire for rings and giving green cards. But, it seems there are just two extremes of brides or bar-girls. How do you lease, rather than renting something with miles than a space shuttle? Peace.

A lot of wisdom in that vlog, That almost sounds like what happened to me also. Chatted for some time with phone calls and letters and met her at the airport. I did have a friend there that knew her and vouched for her character but that was the only girl I was with for the few weeks I was there. She did not ask for things and there were no red flags, things worked out well for us. That was over 22 years ago. She is my wife of 22 plus years now, and living with me in the USA. This is my personal feeling, a IMO kind of thing. If you feel like you want to do something other than meeting a GF at the airport, your not ready to have a GF.
I never once thought about doing anything different than finding the person I was going there to meet, was happy she was meeting me at the airport, and that was 17 years ago. Now, we fly together from the US to the PH and back again after 15 years of marriage. While I might be friendly to someone who talks to me, my gaze is on my wife because that's where it should be.
I've seen different takes on this, but I know if I say I'm going to go out with a person, or go on a date, or go spend some time, etc... I'm not going to do this via checking out other people on my way there. That's called setting yourself up for failure at the very beginning. Trust is a two way thing and without it there's nothing.
If you spend time with a person and want to do something else, cut that tie because one way or another, it's cut, on both ends. Desperation is not the basis of a good relationship.

Well, later after we were engaged and on my second trip to PH, her sister and I were talking; I mentioned off-hand about Kris wanting to meet me in Manila and how I could not figure out why -she wised me up. She said if she met me in Manila she could do two things: See if I was meeting another Pinay and keep another Pinay from 'stealing me' before we met. Hahaha.. What? Someone could 'steal' me? Wow, aren't I special.

One time I was very pleased to be "met at the airport" was in mid 1999 on my first trip to Cagayan de Oro, Mindanao. Small airport, small plane, one check in bag. Baggage collection area a concrete slab under a tin roof, surrounded by high barred fence (like in jail), fully occupied by so many people. Also the porters trying to get help, yells of "taxi sir", just total confusion to my eyes. I was there to be best man at my mate's wedding later in the week in southern Bukidnon. Stood there stunned, with enough nouse to grab my bag. Didn't know I needed the luggage bag to get out of the area past the security guards. Young lady turned up at my elbow saying "are you Bruce". Being large with Acubra hat made me stand out so much. She was the niece of the future bride, 4 months older that said bride. Had to go with the flow, she had arranged a car and driver to being us to where we needed to go. "Stranger in a strange place", having the assistance of that young lady let me survive.

We chatted each other up for 6 months, But a week or so before arriving she informed me she was not going to meet me at the airport. Initially I was taken back by this and quite frankly a little hurt. I was going to be staying at her house with her, but now I'm thinking about calling the whole trip off. But being the smart, wise pragmatic lady she is, she explained that I may want to get a hotel for a couple nights(which she booked for me) and take my time to get acclimated and get my senses about me. Then come to her when I was ready. She is now my wife. That'll tell you how that worked out. I lucked out with her.

Good morning Paul. My name is Larry. I have been living here in Daanbantayan Cebu since 2014. Having just watched your video, I listened to you describe my experience of being met at the airport by my online girlfriend 100% correctly. As you so correctly described, she never once let go of my hand everywhere we went. Silly me, at the time I thought it was sweet. As you so correctly stated, she was insulating me from the clutches of all other Filipina who would happily latch onto me.
We had a wonderful time together. Hopping from one island to another. Always staying at high price resorts, eating at high price restaurants. Sometimes including her nieces. Little did I know I was being played. When we talked online, she always mentioned her two friends. Violy and Terry. I foolishly suggested that we should invite her friends for dinner sometime. On my arrival, she asked was it ok to have dinner with her friends. I foolish thought she meant Violy and Terry. On our arrival at the restaurant, I was introduced to 16 friends.
I had also suggested I would like to have dinner with her family. Meaning her papa, brothers and nieces. How foolish can one be. She mentioned the day we were to have our dinner and asked "when can I pay the catering service". It never occurred to me she had invited 100 family members. Some traveling 150 km to enjoy a free dinner. And so, the meal that day was 25 thousand pesos. I wish I knew you in 2003!
Your videos are spot on. Keep em comming

In my humble opinion, Paul may have given bad advice on this one. Many expats on TH-cam who had long-distance relationships with a single Filipina for a period of a year or more are happily married because he went to the Philippines to meet her and her only. They had no intentions of "looking around" to check out what else may be available, but if you plant that "seed" to slow down so you can look around, that pretty much will end the LDR relationship with the Filipina. IF the foreigner decides to meet the Filipina in person after having a reasonable period of LDR, it is best to keep that focus when he goes to the Philippines, and not use that as an excuse to "look around" if there is anything better than the one you had an LDR - yes there is plenty of fish in the sea, but a wise person knows that he just don't have the time and financial resources to date all the fish in the sea in order to pick "the best one". YOU and her must constantly work at improving an ongoing lasting relationship.

Hi Paul! I enjoyed this vlog. You are on point to all topics about foreigners coming to visit and meet Filipinas. It happened to me in 1991. I met my husband through a pen pal club (it sound ancient). The only reason why my picture and profile was on a pen pal club magazine/book because a Filipino American came back to marry his girlfriend through a pen pal club, whom I knew through a common friend. We were at the beach and he started handing out forms for us to fill out, it was from the pen pal club he belongs to and was helping them recruit more Asian women to add to their book. I was hesitant, it was January 1990. He told me I have nothing to lose and was able to convince me and on top of that, ask me for a 2x2 picture, there were other friends who were there and filled out the form.
He went home and I totally forgot about it and in April of 1990 I start getting letters from all over USA. Some of them were out of my age range, so I just answered them and let them know I’m not interested.
I wasn’t really sure where this pen pal writing will go and how far. I finally communicated to only one person, he seems honest and answer all my questions. After writing for 8 months, he decided to come and visit and check me out and my family and the rest of his pen pals. My friends were asking me why is he meeting with other girls and I told them it’s none of my business and that we are pen pal and not boyfriend/girlfriend.
My father and I met him at the airport and escorted him to the hotel he is staying at, this was December 1990. He visit for 4 days and went on to Cebu and after he met all his pen pals he wanted to come back and spent more time with me but it didn’t happen.
He went home to the USA and we continued to write to each other and we’ll be getting 2 or 3 letters each week from each other. In March of 1991, he proposed through a letter and I said yes.
.We got married July 1991 and we will be celebrating our 31st anniversary this year.
I am one of the lucky ones to find my partner for life in one try. I am looking forward to coming home next year, 2023 and hopefully we will be able to visit Dumaguete. We normally pick one place in the Philippines as a side trip after visiting with family. FYI, no kids and we love to travel.
Keep up the good work, Paul.

I got suckered for several reasons, one being when I was a younger man, I really did get a lot of attention from the ladies, my whole life. I just had it like that and got used to it. My looks flew out the window a few years ago. My profile photo is me two years ago (that is basically what I look like now if anybody is wondering. Not too horrifying 😂), so when a young fine Filipina flirted me on fb in 2016, I really fell hard, not realizing the mess I was about to get myself into. Long story short, after Sindangan police helped me out by escorting me to the bus station (I left out a lot, huh? Lol!!! Tell you about it some other time, hopefully in person? I'm not a crazy. Ok maybe a little 😁), I caught a jet out of Dipolog City and went island hopping, fell in love with the place and the people, and can't wait to finish my obligations here so I can finally move there. Oh yea, I left out the part about her and half her family meeting me at the airport! Anyone reading this, like Paul said, you might be about to have a wonderful life! Or you might be in real trouble, but that's how it starts. At the airport. Usually the one in Manila. Filipina rant over, moral of the story: don't let a couple bad apples spoil the whole picnic! On facebook I am Cliff Patrick, anyone please DM me if you want? Stay cool, stay safe! Bfn.

Geez I love your stories. Hahaha, I learned early that directions in the Phil’s consist of only pointing and saying “over there”.
Being I’ve gone thru the newbie thing in a couple countries, the only advice I can give is from my own clumsy experience. Guys, you need to get comfortable on your own with your new surroundings. You will trip, fall down and get lost but that’s the best teacher. Once I got over that adjustment, everything became easier. Expect for getting directions, still haven’t mastered that one.
Hoping to be there in June and hoping Lou and me can meet you and baby Mae.

    Paul,
I found this video even more helpful than usual. I started talking to my present lady in the spring of the year before Covid. I visited for 3 weeks in October just before Covid hit. Everything locked down and we have video chatted for going on 3 years now. I have been spending most of the last year in the Cancun area (Puerto Morales) of Mexico. I arrived in Manila late on the 19th and was "picked up" at the airport again. I am now in Tacloban, nearish her home in Samar, struggling with jet lag. I will be here for a month, then I want to travel to several locations to see what works and I think the next is Duma. At least Duma is on my list if not the next location. I told her this month is to seer how we (and her 4 year old son) get along together when living and not on vacation. A trial period if you will.
I know I need to find some other friends to interact with. So did/have you met other friends mainly by walking thru town and such or something like Facebook pages or maybe expat groups? BTW I am mostly not a social media sort of person or hanging out in bars. I like to walk alot. The boulevard area there in Duma looks ideal. I choose poorly for an Air B&B here in Tacloban. I am sure you have many offers but I would like to buy you a cup or 2 of coffee if I see you around the area. Your videos have been very helpful. Keep up the good work.
In addition, a mechanical question should you or anyone have the time and inclination to answer. What is the best way to scout furnished apartments? How do you find what is available to rent short of riding around and seeing a sign? A real estate agent? I know how inexperienced I am right know. Kind of like the old meme about the 3 blind men and the elephant. I plan on an air B&B for a week to be able to better look for a place to rent. I saw your hotel video. It was great. I really appreciate the way your videos of late are more nuts and bolts on practical matters. Thanks!

    • @MichaelSmith-hp8qw
      @MichaelSmith-hp8qw 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

There are Facebook groups in almost every area for rentals. You can find a decent real estate agent that way as well if you want to. Always negotiate the price and the deposits. As far as meeting other expats always be careful with that the worst people I have meet here are other expats. But there are FB groups that are expat and have different activities.

I live in Philippines, lost a house here long ago, I did better than most I sold house for a lost and gave the girl half and I got the other house. That was sold late 2013 that money is long gone. I now live in the province which is more differcult than in the big city. Girls in province many live with their family and many expect u to support their family. I went through a few girls because they always wanted more than I was willing to give. I give the girl 5 or 6000 peso a month she can use the money how she wants to give some to her family or keep it. I pay the rent buy the food. I got in an argument with one of her family members and I was expecting her to go back to her family, she did not she picked me over them. Most would not do that. City girls don't have the strong support of their family as province girls. There are good girls out there but not many. Most want you to support their family and if you don't give enough their family will tell the girl to leave you.

If You are using Dating Apps you should be chatting with more than one girl. When you come to Philippines you should meet a few of them. There is nothing wrong with doing that, but its important to be honest with all of them. I met 4 different girls and i just picked the best one and 5 years latter we are still together. I did not sleep with them on our first meeting and I did not come here with the intention of sleeping with as many women as possible in 3 weeks. If you come here with that idea, you will not only ruin your reputation, you will also make people think that all expats are Sex Tourist, and you will never find a quality woman.

Meeting all 3 during the same trip might be a little too much though lol... the filipinas seem to be a little obsessed quickly too. haha. and as you mention want all your attention too (so u dont find a possible new filipina to talk to) Hopefully covid restrictions keep loosening up for my June/July planned trip.

I wish the Philippines would relax there Covid-19 testing rules. They are requiring a "RT-PCR" test for entry into the Philippines. The U.S Labs are financially gouging people for this type of test. It would be nice if they only required an Antigen test 48hrs before the entry into the country. The U.S could also change their rules a little. The U.S is asking for one of four tests be done, one day before travel. It would be nice if they both would accept the Antigen test 48hrs before travel.

I don't necessarily see a scam with the girl that met a guy and went on vacations and got gifts then went with another one. It's called dating. Maybe she decided the first guy wasn't going to work out. The only way it's a scam is if she led him to believe she wants a serious relationship and continues to receive gifts and money from a guy who thinks she's his girlfriend while she hangs out with the next guy. Deceit is the key here.

To be fair.... Many Filipinas are VERY attracted to white men. Sure, not all, but having a fair complexion is about all you need to be deemed handsome by many Filipinas. My Filipina wife has always found me attractive. Yet by western standards, I am about one notch above troll. So yeah, the online "You so handsome" is easy to dismiss, but it can often be somewhat true. Men in the west are used to western women who are WAY too picky for their own good, so we have difficulty believing we can be seen as attractive, especially when our experience with women has mostly been disinterest.

"Locals" are very attuned to discerning "newbies" or tourists. When buying things I always hand around and observe how much "locals" pay for what you want. Then, kif a local doesn't volunteer to help, I have a very good idea of what I should pair without either side getting ripped off.
I also dress "rough", no fancy clothes, no flashing money, just like a local. I also frequent the same stores. This way they know you are not a tourist. I am used to the Chinese community - being from Toronto, Canada - so I have an advantage.|
I don't trust meat here, but Chinese meats are treated so they can be unrefrigerated for hours without degradation. Most anything barbequed is safe. Always eat at a crowded vendor - their food is freshest.
But dress down and mix with the locals where they shop.

The money transfer is always from western men ---> Filipina women. Never the other way around.
I know Filipinas that have managed to get to Australia against all the odds and guess what happens when they get there? They behave very differently from the way they behaved back home. Now they see there are western men everywhere that are offering them money, luxury gifts, offering to do this or that for them for free or at the mans expense etc, etc. So they trade up. They go for higher earning richer men with money, wealth, status, etc.
Western men in the Philippines = walking ATM's dispensing money constantly.
Filipina women in the western world = deposit taking ATM's taking deposits or having the ability to take deposits of money from a western man or western men.
Try turning the tables and having Filipina women become earning assets and revenue generators for you.

Truth. We hear from the happily married expats who say how wonderful it was being a white knight for an extended family and having babies. And that's great for those with that personality type. But, it's not for everyone. I've found the Uni grad girls (not begging for money or babies) mostly just want the green card and monkey branch on arrival. No money, No honey. Peace.

Great stuff Paul, you were wise that you took your time, which eventually led you to Baby Mae. But I am mystified by the 'professional girlfriends', especially the one you knew way back when ... was she addicted to the new stuff she was getting from the guys or was she actually hoping to meet the 'one'?

I can relate. I learned early on to weed out all of the girls that ask for money.

Anything left after the weeding? The ones I've met after the weeding had even bigger long-time scams up their sleeves. I only go for holiday fun now but that's difficult too. Peace.

More great advice from the Sage of Dumaguete. I was lucky that my work was always different, interesting and challenging. I never suffered from 'Ground Hound Days'. Most mornings, I was excited to get to work to see, if the solution I dreamed up over night would fix yesterday's problem. When I retired three years ago, I was busy going different places, meeting new people and learning interesting ideas. I even went back to university for a few classes. But since the pandemic started two years ago, I have been suffering from what I'm calling 'Gopher Days'. Watching the joy, you and Baby Mae share, has inspired me to venture out of my hole, and travel to the Philippines. When I get to Dumaguete, I'll buy you a cup of coffee. For now, I just want to say, Thanks for showing us, how it is done.

Oh man ‘The Conversation’ with online pinay really hits home. I pretty much stopped using online because of the danger to my sanity having that same conversation. Especially when I mentioned I’d had a pinay gf before . They always wanted to know every detail about it and why it ended and I’m like you only fricking met me 15 minutes ago! Occasionally I’d say this is a bit like an interview then they would be mortally offended lol Finding one that can actually converse and take it to that next level was like finding an ice cold coke in the desert …

Filipinas are crazy jealous- probably the kind of jealousy you've never experienced with your Western exes. And this is often causing a rift between a Westerner and his Pinay. So, before you sign up to these websites, book your tickets and meet her, study how we, Filipinas are. Don't be going into a relationship with us and complaining about how crazy we are 5 years later. Remember, you are getting involved with someone whose culture is way different than yours. The way we live, think, and do things is different than yours. You gotta expect there is a huge difference in attitudes.
On another note, Filipinas can be the best wives- if you choose the right one. We are submissive in a way that we think men are always the head of the family, and that they have the final say in everything. We baby you, that's how we treat our partners.

If it were me I would first move to the phillipines and get situated. After a year of being there I would then consider meeting a local and start dating. Dating online, and overseas is a recipe for failure, imho.

THEIR ONLY GAME!!!!!! "the foreigner" is just a "mark"... someone to get MONEY from for her, her kids, friends, family, BF's, GF's.... i wonder how many guys go over there and get a LESSON in "love" (MONEY) and if lucky have enough money left over to get on the plane out of there and call it "lessons learned"... never again!!!!! sad, but that is the reality of "love"... its all abt money money money. just the faces on the denominations are different

    "how to transfer money"...
I'm tossing this out almost everywhere, lately, because I see a lot of expats having the money issue.
If you're a vet living out-country, especially if your income is by direct deposit, bank with USAA! They never charge a foreign currency exchange fee, and they'll rebate you up to $15 a month for ATM fees.
In the Philippines, that adds up. ATM withdrawals are capped at 10,000 php per transaction, and the ATM fees (usually 250php or about 5 bucks) mount up quickly. Currency exchange fees in my other bank (Chase) show up later and take me by surprise every time...and they hit you even if you're making a card purchase, not an ATM withdrawal.
    Just sayin'.

Hey Paul , Over The Hump From Pahrump, I’m now in the Philippines. Pasig City is my hang out until I complete some paperwork; then I’ll start seeing the sites I’ve wanted to visit, of course my LDR will be with me. No professional girl friends here. I’m the ugly American and if the goat died I’ll eat the goat.
