I am looking at another mexico video they say 45k in savings and checking or 180k in investments. Not sure how they count certain things like savings bonds. The u.s. market could get hit bad and then you have to sell at the bottom to have savings so there is potential downside.

I'm a 55 year old Aussie who has paid off his mortgage, has saved some cash, has some shares and some money in Super (401K) which I can access in nearly four years. I have a good paying job but after 33 years I am just burned out and my health is paying for it. I've spent lots of time traveling to Thailand over the past 7 years but the Philippines is really starting to become attractive mainly with the English language. Next year I intend to spend February in Dumaguerte for a month just to check things out. Anyway I'm digressing and really just want to thank you for the break down on the numbers and also to thank you for your super informative (and fun) channel/s. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Paul, I live in North Thailand. I transfer from my Canadian pension 2500 USD per month and take care my spouse and her kid. I have car anf motorcycle but they are not new but well maintained. Rent a house with 3 bed and AC near a main city. I use saving in Canada only for my health insurance and emergencies expenses. Now I save money that before covid I used to travel in Thailand and dining out .Like you I do not need anything fancy or fashionable. I love watching your videos while I have my morning coffee. Hi. Paul and Baby Mae. I first went to The Phillipines in 1998 and absolutely loved it , and did about 50 trips travelling around the islands till I retired in 2012 . I settled in Angeles City which I loved then, but not at all now. I still remember my average monthly expenditure which was 55,000 pesos a month. Half of that cost was the monthly rate at the America Hotel. The rest was for meals and entertainment and dating. From what I am hearing ten years on, the same fun and lifestyle would cost 120,000 a month. That’s without throwing your money around. I eventually switched to Thailand because I had it better for the same monthly expenditure.
Great video Paul and to Mae as well. Here's my simple advice to ALL: If you are an older expat and have/live a SIMPLE LIFE, then at least $2,000 income coming in should be enough. If you are younger, adventurous, a smoker, a drinker, enjoy traveling, etc., then a MORE REALISTIC $2,500 to $3,000 per month income (minimum) should be needed. Dont be FOOLED into always thinking you have enough money each month. Emergencies and surprises occur each day (especially for the adventurous types) so come PREPARED , WELL PLANNED, and most important SAVE FOR A RAINY DAY!!!

Thank you for that. So tired of hearing guys talk about how cheap it is here. Sure it could be if you want to live like a Filipino , but we are not really adaptive to that life style. Also it gives Filipinos the idea they can charge American prices for things. Problem is I don't want to pay American price for Filipino quality.
I like your videos Paul since you speak so directly without any kind of script, budget is very individual according to what needs each and one have but fully possible to live a simple life if you live alone or have a sensible lady like Baby Mae 🙂. My wife and I and the kids will go for a vacation to Cebu / Bohol / Bantayan this summer. On holiday we probably spend much more than we spent when we lived there. I remember that during my 10 years in the Philippines I never succeeded with the budget, as unexpected expenses always appeared. I think everyone is experiencing unexpected expenses in the Philippines.

You are spot on about Mexico. I am renting a 2 bd home for 150 a month in Tecate MX. I know where to eat. I get 2 vapor tacos and a big pineapple drink for 1.50. Water is 5 dollars and electricity is 20 dollars. Groceries max at 100 a week. SS is 2,480 and I have retirement money. Waiting to return to Malaysia where I am married and have a home and an apartment which are paid for. You are a master with how you do your videos. Overhead in Malaysia is cheaper than dirt. You are the man with a plan and very good at laying it out for people to get a handle on. Everything comes to he who has patience and you are an example of that. Spot on old dog.

Paul you’ve done a great job coming over here with 14 grand and eventually making it work and you’ve been here almost 5 years I know guys then I’ll come over here with over 100 grand and their Social Security and within three or four years they still had to hop back on the plane and go back home because they ran out of money they totally depleted their emergency fund down to nothing so you have been a terrific job
Yeah I couldn’t believe it the day he came to me and told me he has to go back home to the US because I remember that he had told me a few years prior to that he came over here with over 100 K I never got into details with him I think he had a few girlfriends so that could really mess shit up but I’m thinking to myself my God over 100 K and three years later it’s gone if I would’ve came over with 100 K unless I would’ve had a heart attack or something major I can make money like that last in the Philippines for decades

Nice and truthful vid Paul. Listen guys and gals. If you plan on renting $1500 to 2k a month is needed to handle your month to month period! We own our own home in the Philippines, we paid cash for the new truck, we paid cash for our Bajaj running around vehicle, and we have absolutely ZERO DEBT. with that being said our monthly out of pocket is $960.00 per month. If you have an emergency (And You Will) you better have 2k to 5k put back depending on the emergency you have. If its medical it will be on the higher end. DO NOT THINK UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES you can move to the Philippines on less than $1300 depending on your lifestyle. I assure you that you will be looking for other avenues for income. ie: A TH-cam blogging channel but with the saturation of them in the Philippines the chances of you making anything is slim. My wife does own our property. However the hugh misconception is that the forigner has no stake. If you are married to a filipina and build a home here, land and building you legally have some protection. The guy's buying property and building a home under "We're not married but I love you" train of thought can cost you. If you marry first then accumulate you have some legal protection. Good luck.

I will have a bit more of a budget. In fact, I could live in the US retired, however as a pauper. For me, it will be about quality of life. The ability to save a bit each month, which on the pension I will have will be tough to do in the States. Of course, there is the escape from being invisible as a 60 year old man here that really draws me. It will be nice to live in a society that appreciates thos of us in our golden years.
Hey Paul, I’ll eventually get to the Philippines one day but for now I went back to work. I will be 60 this year and my financial advisor is highly suggesting that I take Social Security at 62 until my annuity fully matures Because I was burning through my IRA last year and little too much. It’s getting harder and harder for an old person retired living on Social Security or a person living on SSI disability to live in United States. Inflation is it a mean mother f**ker and it has no mercy for people who have a little or no Financial stability.

Since then when we do return I just access my money via my debit card. If you have relatives o friends in the US that can help with mail and whatever- you too could just drop out- many do!
My monthly budget here in CDO is the same, $1500-1700 per month. Big house in subdivision with me, wife, daughter, sister-in-law. It's a very nice life. Very happy here.

We drink Arabica coffee using Coffee maker better than buying Coffee outside. Our rent each month is 7000 pesos. We live well here in a sub division with swimming pool and sports centre.

However, requirements for retirees to obtain a permanet visa in Mexico have changed dramatically last year: Temporary resident income proof requirements - Investments above $43,200USD over past 12 months OR monthly pension income of at least $2,600USD over past 6 months OR real estate in Mexico with value exceeding $6.9 million pesos (equivalent to USD 342k). Permanent resident income proof requirements - Investments above $173,000USD over past 12 months OR monthly pension income of at least $4,300USD over past 6 months. (absolutely ludicrous imho)
I used to get an FM3 visa. I found that not one time was I ever asked to produce it. honestly people can get the FMM which is good for 180 days at about $30 and avoid the hassle of having to show all the documentation which for people's information has to be translated into spanish.

Paul, Thank you for the budget information. I am big on budgets. At almost 90 years old I do one main budget per month plus two per week (mostly for outgoing expense) (Each bank account) etc. I use excel. I would suggest excel if you wish since it is self calculating and really helps you keep track of everything. Here on the Central Coast California, We pay the City for electricity, water, sewer, trash pickup. Always over $200 per month. Gas heating $60 in summer and now $160 + in winter. Internet $58 per month TV we have free ROKU. Food $600 per month. You can see where this is going. The old USA has gone. I came here 68 years ago. It was a fantastic place and so cheap to live. After 10 months I received a draft notice so volunteered for the draft to go early. We are having a hard time now just like most folks here, Rents around here for a house around $1,800 to $2,500 and selling for over $500,000. Our monthly budget is $1500/ month Canadian, ( about $1162/mon US ). For everything. We have a women that comes everyday who cooks and cleans, etc. and we have a live in helper, plus we sponsor the helpers grand daughter for school supplies, uniforms, etc. We own our own house, and I have a scooter.

Thanks for the update. I live comfortably in California on $1800 6 months a year and Spend 6 months in Thailand/Philippines/Colombia or Mexico. And funny enough I usually spend about 1800 abroad too (excluding airfare). IMO the 2 main reasons for being broke in the US are housing and vehicle. Don't rent more house than you need, I pay $600 in California for a 1br apartment. And don't buy a new car. The 50% depreciation hit your paying every 3-5 years is the difference between a funded 401k and retiring broke. Buy a 5-7 year old Japanese car used and drive it into the ground, put what you woulda been paying in car payment into 401k. I have 2 vehicles, car and motorcycle but their both Japanese and someone else payed the depreciation. As for food, I treat going out as an occasion. Happy to pay to spend time with friends or family in a nice place. But I'm not paying $5 for a coffee in a drive through for a coffee I can make at home. I'm also buying more pork and ground turkey from Costco in bulk vs chicken at the supermarket these days.

Rent - Shopping - Utilities - Fuel - Mortgages. alot of owners who have investment properties are selling up which has caused thousands of now Homeless people. You are spot on about Mexico. I am renting a 2 bd home for 150 a month in Tecate MX. I know where to eat. I get 2 vapor tacos and a big pineapple drink for 1.50. Water is 5 dollars and electricity is 20 dollars. Groceries max at 100 a week. SS is 2,480 and I have retirement money. Waiting to return to Malaysia where I am married and have a home and an apartment which are paid for. You are a master with how you do your videos. Overhead in Malaysia is cheaper than dirt. You are the man with a plan and very good at laying it out for people to get a handle on. Everything comes to he who has patience and you are an example of that. Spot on old dog.
Hi guys! Paul, I watched your video about how you and Baby Mae met and I was so moved. You two look great and are a fun couple. I see all these comments about guys wanting to meet Filipinas and think they're all like Mae but after seeing your old video, Mae truly has genuinely a good heart and that is a very unique trait. Paul you’ve done a great job coming over here with 14 grand and eventually making it work and you’ve been here almost 5 years I know guys then I’ll come over here with over 100 grand and their Social Security and within three or four years they still had to hop back on the plane and go back home because they ran out of money they totally depleted their emergency fund down to nothing so you have been a terrific job
They must have been living it up, or casino addicts. I know there are several in the Philippines.
Yeah I couldn’t believe it the day he came to me and told me he has to go back home to the US because I remember that he had told me a few years prior to that he came over here with over 100 K I never got into details with him I think he had a few girlfriends so that could really mess shit up but I’m thinking to myself my God over 100 K and three years later it’s gone if I would’ve came over with 100 K unless I would’ve had a heart attack or something major I can make money like that last in the Philippines for decades

Nice and truthful vid Paul. Listen guys and gals. If you plan on renting $1500 to 2k a month is needed to handle your month to month period! We own our own home in the Philippines, we paid cash for the new truck, we paid cash for our Bajaj running around vehicle, and we have absolutely ZERO DEBT. with that being said our monthly out of pocket is $960.00 per month. If you have an emergency (And You Will) you better have 2k to 5k put back depending on the emergency you have. If its medical it will be on the higher end. DO NOT THINK UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES you can move to the Philippines on less than $1300 depending on your lifestyle. I assure you that you will be looking for other avenues for income. ie: A TH-cam blogging channel but with the saturation of them in the Philippines the chances of you making anything is slim. My wife does own our property. However the hugh misconception is that the forigner has no stake. If you are married to a filipina and build a home here, land and building you legally have some protection. The guy's buying property and building a home under "We're not married but I love you" train of thought can cost you. If you marry first then accumulate you have some legal protection. Good luck.

I will have a bit more of a budget. In fact, I could live in the US retired, however as a pauper. For me, it will be about quality of life. The ability to save a bit each month, which on the pension I will have will be tough to do in the States. Of course, there is the escape from being invisible as a 60 year old man here that really draws me. It will be nice to live in a society that appreciates thos of us in our golden years.

Hey Paul, I’ll eventually get to the Philippines one day but for now I went back to work. I will be 60 this year and my financial advisor is highly suggesting that I take Social Security at 62 until my annuity fully matures Because I was burning through my IRA last year and little too much. It’s getting harder and harder for an old person retired living on Social Security or a person living on SSI disability to live in United States. Inflation is it a mean mother f**ker and it has no mercy for people who have a little or no Financial stability.

How do taxes work if you collect SSI or a pension and live overseas ? Do you need a “home base” in the states ?
@@JoeyP322 Personally whenever I go to PI I just drop out! Indeed, I did a 4-year period w/O ever coming back to the US. (Before I retired!) Since then when we do return I just access my money via my debit card. If you have relatives o friends in the US that can help with mail and whatever- you too could just drop out- many do!

Hi Paul. John & Elsa here. We live in Davao. Living here costs less than 800 dollars a month. My income each month is more than 2000 dollars a month. We wash our own clothes. We drink Arabica coffee using Coffee maker better than buying Coffee outside. Our rent each month is 7000 pesos. We live well here in a sub division with swimming pool and sports centre.

However, requirements for retirees to obtain a permanet visa in Mexico have changed dramatically last year: Temporary resident income proof requirements - Investments above $43,200USD over past 12 months OR monthly pension income of at least $2,600USD over past 6 months OR real estate in Mexico with value exceeding $6.9 million pesos (equivalent to USD 342k). Permanent resident income proof requirements - Investments above $173,000USD over past 12 months OR monthly pension income of at least $4,300USD over past 6 months. (absolutely ludicrous imho)
That's getting more expensive then even Thailand!
One can live in Singapore for those amounts. Screw Mexico!
I used to get an FM3 visa. I found that not one time was I ever asked to produce it. honestly people can get the FMM which is good for 180 days at about $30 and avoid the hassle of having to show all the documentation which for people's information has to be translated into spanish.

Paul, Thank you for the budget information. I am big on budgets. At almost 90 years old I do one main budget per month plus two per week (mostly for outgoing expense) (Each bank account) etc. I use excel. I would suggest excel if you wish since it is self calculating and really helps you keep track of everything. Here on the Central Coast California, We pay the City for electricity, water, sewer, trash pickup. Always over $200 per month. Gas heating $60 in summer and now $160 + in winter. Internet $58 per month TV we have free ROKU. Food $600 per month. You can see where this is going. The old USA has gone. I came here 68 years ago. It was a fantastic place and so cheap to live. After 10 months I received a draft notice so volunteered for the draft to go early. We are having a hard time now just like most folks here, Rents around here for a house around $1,800 to $2,500 and selling for over $500,000. I am married to a Filipina 30 years yesterday but too old to come to PI. Thank you again Paul for sharing your budget ----------------------Most interesting----------------------Howard & Family

Our monthly budget is $1500/ month Canadian, ( about $1162/mon US ). For everything. We have a women that comes everyday who cooks and cleans, etc. and we have a live in helper, plus we sponsor the helpers grand daughter for school supplies, uniforms, etc. We own our own house, and I have a scooter.

I live comfortably in California on $1800 6 months a year and Spend 6 months in Thailand/Philippines/Colombia or Mexico. And funny enough I usually spend about 1800 abroad too (excluding airfare).
IMO the 2 main reasons for being broke in the US are housing and vehicle. Don't rent more house than you need, I pay $600 in California for a 1br apartment. And don't buy a new car. The 50% depreciation hit your paying every 3-5 years is the difference between a funded 401k and retiring broke. Buy a 5-7 year old Japanese car used and drive it into the ground, put what you woulda been paying in car payment into 401k. I have 2 vehicles, car and motorcycle but their both Japanese and someone else payed the depreciation.
As for food, I treat going out as an occasion. Happy to pay to spend time with friends or family in a nice place. But I'm not paying $5 for a coffee in a drive through for a coffee I can make at home. I'm also buying more pork and ground turkey from Costco in bulk vs chicken at the supermarket these days.
