    Same here, as some of your viewers have stated. Someone before me had "rewired" their third brake light by splicing the seven or eight wire harness. With your help I was able to release enough slack to find the original harness plug and replace my leaky third brake assembly with a new one. Big thank you.

      Happy to help! I’m so glad that the wiring harness can be unclipped and disconnected as one piece. I might’ve thrown in the towel if I had to rewire the entire thing lol

    Your video just saved me a lot of time and frustration. I wish I had seen it prior to starting. I didn't see the 2 retaining clips in upper right at first and was trying to get the other connector through the center hole and it was driving me mad because my needlenose wasn't long enough. Once I saw your video, I was able to find the correct harness and connect my light to it in just a few minutes. Thanks again for taking the time to video your 2nd light switchout.

      @@AndrewDoesLife after you connected the new harness did you fish it back to go through the middle hole? in the video It looks like you kept it in the right whole, which is not where was originally.

      Works better to pull it through the right hole

  • @georgehooper6955
    @georgehooper6955 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    What a pain! I did mine by cutting the harness to the old light, using a chisel to cut off the tip of the plastic retainer up under the roof to release it; and fishing the harness and connector out through the right hole; only way I could disconnect it. Then zip tied it through the hole, and added some plastic grommet on the harness where it went through the hole. If there are any auto engineers listening, please make sure you include a service loop at the end of a harness with a connector-you shouldn’t have to drop the headliner or modify the harness to replace a light. Great video BTW, the idea to reroute the harness to get at the connector was the key

    Huge thank you!! Because of your amazing video I was able to replace the brake light on my truck! For a moment there, because I couldn't find the right connector I almost gave up and thought I ordered the wrong light from ebay. But since you mentioned the anchor clips in the corner, I looked deeper and managed to force out the clips and pull out the connector. Voila! Afterwards everything fell into place! You saved me time, frustration and a needless return!

    Hey I had one of these 3rd brake lights and found you have to take a flat blade screw driver to spread out the metal jaws for the blue connector to fit inside the original light plug. Also, LEDs are polar specific so you have to make sure ground to ground and power to power. Appreciate your videos brother!

    Glad I watch this video. Before buying the 3rd brake light. Installed it today and original harness is still working with minor cracks on the middle brake light. It was tough pushing the plug in for the middle part and got it to fit and thinking it probably doesn’t work because I thought light would lit if I unlock my truck with key fob but only the reverse light lit. Got my brother to check if brake light is lit when I hit the brakes and nope. I unplugged and insert it back the other way and pressed the brake again and finally it has light. Was about to buy a new harness thinking the crack middle one is probably out. My truck is 07. This video is very helpful about the brake plug and no need to cut wires.

      Andrew Does Life well my truck battery lost juice yesterday and only got power by using jumper cables and finally got it to run and got home and once off and see if it turns on and nope it’s dead. Only clicking noise. Took it to mechanic shop and they got it fix and said they repair electrical problem that damaged the battery and replaced the battery. Checked the 3rd brake light and only the brake light works and not reverse light. Switched the led bulb with the old bulb to see if it will still light up and nothing. So I’m guessing the reverse light wires are damaged. I order new wiring harness to see if it will fix the problem of the reverse light to get the led light back on. Gotta find another video of how to remove it or get someone to do it. My truck is Sport Trac 07

    • @AndrewDoesLife
      @AndrewDoesLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, it is not the exact same as the wiring hardness is routed downward in the Sport Trac but the process should be pretty similar. After you remove the brake light and detach it form the wiring harness, you should be able to pull up on the harness and look down thru the hole and see where to un-clip the harness to replace it with the new one. Let me know if I can be of any more help! :)

    • @ThePanamamexican
      @ThePanamamexican 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Andrew Does Life yea when I saw the different location of my harness I think it could be difficult to remove but I’ll take your word for it if it’s just pull and push clip to disconnect the harness. Gotta wait about 1 week for the new harness to arrive. Thanks for replying and if I have problems I’ll ask you to see what ways can work. 👍

    I managed to get the connector out without disturbing the white retainers. Just push back the old harness back in the center hole to get the connector out of the right hole. I used some right angle needle nose (Harbor Freight pliers) Make sure you have a good seal on the housing so you don't get a water leak which will travel down to your carpet sill edge (which then wicks up under your front carpet... which is often confused with a windshield leak or condensation A/C leak)

    On mine I actually snipped that clip to actually get the harness loose since it was so worn. If memory serves me correct, since your center LED is hard-wired, unlike the outside cargo lights which are LED bulbs, it will not burn out. I'm planning on getting an LED one myself, so would you suggest getting the same style you have, or would you even suggest getting one where all three lights are hard-wired into the harness?

    If you install the Lasfit or other LED "cargo" light bulbs your keyless entry may have diminished range when trying to ARM/LOCK the factory alarm (due to RF interference).
    If so, get some ELK 2" Copper Foil Tape (EMI shielding tape). Cover the back and bottom side of the light housing (don't worry about the center brake bulb because it doesn't come on when you exit the truck) and then cover the sheet metal under the opening for the third brake light. You'll want to extend past the hole/opening by 4 to 6" on either side.
    The factory Ford keyless entry module is mounted behind the rear seat and it can get funky radiation from the LED cargo lights so this copper tape is designed to create a barrier between them. $18 will get you 33 feet of the 2" ELK tape. I used about a third to half of the roll.
    Have fun!

      Will any aluminum tape work as good?

    • @robnation2475
      @robnation2475 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@blowme5150 Copper is supposed to be better for shielding. It actually didn't end up working all that well for me anyway (it helped but only so much)... so I may change out the Lasfit bulbs or just keep locking my truck as I get out. Seems like the RF noise is so strong that even with the shielding on the backside the RF noise is overwhelming.🤔 Not sure if shielding would fix the problem entirely even if you taped over/covered the bulbs all together. 🙄 Very frustrating regardless!

    I take it you didn’t put the new wiring harness back in the original position as the old one was and re clip it? At least you didn’t show us that you did.

      @@AndrewDoesLife yes, there's a way to turn the cargo lights on and leave them on? Or just when you open the door?

    • @AndrewDoesLife
      @AndrewDoesLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EduardoSilva-xe3gp I think you can force it to stay on by turning the light knob to the left of the steering wheel to the always on position. You can turn them on by unlocking your truck with the key fob too.
