So I've have my BMW 330e G21 for around 4 months now so wanted to create an updated review now that I've lived with the car for longer, taken it on some long trips and used it as my family car/daily driver. A few things I point out are my actual MPG figures, the question of the extra weight compared to the 330i, if a 3 series is big enough or practical enough to be a family car when buggies and car seats are concerned, and we touch on the tax benefits of this potentially being a company car too. My 22 330e came without lumbar adjustment for the front passenger seat. I charge at home daily and plug in at work too, so my daily commute is all on electric power. I use Hybrid mode on road trips and when running errands that exceed the range of Electric mode. Running errands I get around 50-90 mpg; road trips are typically 42-45 mpg. I love this car and the Extraboost function; it’s comparable to my previous 435 Gran Coupe equipped with the M Power and Performance package.

@kevin - I just got the '23. in Hybrid mode, it seems like car basically runs in EV mode until the battery dies and then switches to gas. It never seems like the gas and battery are working in "hybrid" together, like a Prius would. Like I am either getting 99.5 MPG (EV Mode) or 23 MPG (Gas mode). I thought in Hybrid mode that the car would just get like 50mpg and use some gas and some battery in concert. Has that been your experience? Trying to figure out if I was naive or if there is something set wrong in my car.

When you move into the house, and can charge at home, I think you will arrive at a completely different conclusion.
After 3 years owning a 2018 330e (F30 performance, smaller battery, 25km (only 15.5 mile) electric range), I have a couple of thoughts:
** First, our situation: We're retired, and do short shopping trips, with the occasional longer run. We have changed to an electricity plan that provides free power from 9pm to midnight. The car is garaged, and plugged in nightly... the "Delayed Charging" feature is used, so charging starts at 9pm. A full charge takes under 5 hours, but our typical daily use is usually less than 3 hours. We are using the cable that came with the car, plugged into a 230 volt, 10 Amp power socket. (This is just the normal household socket in New Zealand and Australia, nothing special.)
** It is impossible to arrive at petrol consumption figures. They can vary hugely from day to day, even with the same driver. For example:
- Charge it every night, do trips or commute under 40km per day, don't floor the gas-pedal so the petrol engine starts, and you will get HUGE mpg numbers. (Coz it's just a heavy electric car! 😄 )
- Go on a trip with fully charged battery and, after you've used up that bonus you will use much the same amount of petrol as any 2 litre turbo. (The regenerated battery power from braking and coasting roughly offsets the extra weight.)
** Never charge it, and you get the worst of both worlds! The only benefit is from regeneration while coasting and braking.
** I AM COMPLETELY CONVINCED THAT THE ONLY VALID WAY TO COMPARE A HYBRID WITH AN ICE VEHICLE, OR A FULL ELECTRIC VEHICLE IS BY COMPARING DOLLARS per 100 KILOMETRES. (or MILES per DOLLAR) In other words, you have to add the cost of the petrol used to the cost of the electricity used, to arrive at a total cost for the energy used. This can then be compared to the cost for a fuel powered car, OR an electric-only powered car.
My BMW emails me a detailed monthly report that gives me all I need to calculate the electric part, but sadly it is lacking in detail on the petrol usage. 🙁
** Final thought: Our previous car was a BMW 335d Touring (E91). This 3 litre, twin-turbo was a rocketship, with immense overtaking torque. It's straight-line performance was significantly better than the 330e, and it's fuel economy was unbelievably good! (Best trip figures of 6.4 litres/100km - I was trying to be good! 😊)
However, on a mountain road we travel frequently, the 330e is 5 minutes faster. This is down to the electric motor slingshotting you out of corners, until the turbo spools up.

I'd like to know please as I'm looking to buy one, if you have a full tank and fully electric charge and you was on the motorway how long would the electric charge last on a long drive, would it last as long as the fuel in the tank if I was driving non stop until the fuel had ran out or would it only last as half the journey ect also how far could you realistically drive on hybrid on a full tank and fully charge? No one really answers this and I'd like to know as I do far trips but love the car and I really want one. Thank you.
A hybrid without charge is like driving a transit van, insanely heavy cars 😂
I recently bought a 320i saloon because the boot was so small on the 330e and the touring version was too expensive for me - I didn’t realise how small the 330e touring boot is!
Very happy with the 320i - does about 25mpg on short journeys and I can get 53-55mpg in eco mode on longer journeys, or 45mpg driving a bit harder. But the best thing is the huge boot 😂
I think a 330e only makes sense for company car purposes to make the most of the much lower BIK rate. I have an M340i touring and average mpg is 35 achieving around 42 on a motorway cruise. Really impressed as with the power I expected the mpg to be much worse!

@@timmanc not a silly question at all. I live in the USA now and we had to get a special plug which kind of splices 2 x 110v domestic supplies together to give us 220v to charge the car in any kind of reasonable time. I’m not sure how it works back in the U.K. as you have 240v but I don’t know how much power the cables/socket can take.

I own the same car, and because of various reasons I have lived with it both when I could charge and not charge it. When I can charge it, I use absolutely zero fuel for local driving. I can easily do 30 km electric in winter and 50 km summer (65 km in continuous run). When I couldn't charge it, I seriously used 1,5 L/10 km or 15,7mpg for my local driving (winter time, -10C). For my local driving I only do trips of maximum 5 km though... Anyhow what I find the most impressive is the car's road trip fuel consumption. I can absolutely hammer it on long road trips with zero charging possibilities and get a fuel consumption of 0,6-0,7L/10 km or 34-39 mpg (0,6L/10 km when driving a lot of high ways in summer, 0,7L/10km when doing extremely twisty roads in summer or high ways in winter). And then I really mean hammer it. I drive the car as hard as I am able to, no limits. I think that's just insane. What is less impressive is that when you drive in a more eco fashion without charging it, the fuel consumption doesn't decrease that much. Maybe you could do 0,55L/10 km? When you are able to charge the car at long road trips, I think you actually do save more fuel than the amount of km you could go in electric times fuel consumption. I did a 900 km road trip in one day where I picked up a friend 450 km away from me and then drove 450 km back to my place. I used all my electric power on the way to my friend and had zero battery on the way back. I calculated that I saved 4-5 liters of petrol. Not insignificant!
Why do you use a weird L/10km measurement?
I recently hired the pre facelift model 21 reg for 3 weeks and averaged 43mpg without charging. Usually mixed motorway and urban driving
I charge my 320e (G21) very regurarly (I have a charging station next to my flat, not my personal charger though). I typically do trips "around the church" so my daily/weekly commute is almost purely electric. Since beginning of this month, I have an average consumption of 0.4l/100 km. The longest trip I've done since I've owned this car, was ~400 km (and then ~400 km back), and then it averaged around 5 liters/100 km. Still much better than my Hyundai that has around 8-10 liters.
I do agree that the inside/trunk is rather small (also kid seat in the back - 3yo though) but luckily I don't need a large trunk that often, additionally, for holidays we can put a trunk on the roof ;-). Anyways, great video! Keep it up!

Iv got a 530e m sport saloon, and I’m averaging 52mpg (not driving very economically really just charging regularly) - I do about 350 miles per week on the motorway as well so all in all not bad - a lot better than my 3.0 v6 tdi I had previously
I own the same car and the mpg varies dramatically depending on how you drive it. Without charging it on short blasts I only get around 20 or high teens mpg but on slow stop start journey it is great at 47 mpg fully loaded. I have noticed that if you are cruising on the motorway the mpg is not great. I am presuming that this is because the battery regeneration will not be coming into play. The boot is small but luckily I ordered mine with a factory fitted tow bar that folds away with a touch of a button in the boot. On a few occasions I have filled the boot and then realised that the tow bar is folded away so then had to empty the boot in order to push the button to unfold the tow bar. BMW put the button on the dash!!!
Cool video man, I'm in the same boat as you, similar age, just had a baby, sold my 2019 G20 330i last year because I wasn't going anywhere. Just ordered the facelift 330i, waiting till December! Then I thought, never really looked at the 330e, not sure if I would want a more complex, heavier vehicle that can only full power in 10 second bursts. Enjoyed the video dude ! :)

If you plan you trip in a hybrid mode, can you set up, that your battery will be at specific % when you arrive to the destination ? For example, commuting to work every day, where you know, you can charge it, so you want to get there with 0%. Will bmw system adjust electric/gas usage accordingly ? Thnx.
Great video. Got my new 330e Sedan few weeks ago here in Melbourne. Happy with it so far. The only downfall is once the battery is used up (I get on average 40 km of range with a full battery) then the car switches itself to Sports mode and the fuel economy is not the best. I used to own a 2021 BMW 330 M Sport (petrol) and it had a comfortable economy mode that was much better on fuel consumption. No such thing exists in this 330e. So it’s not the typical hybrid or PHEV vehicle. It only works well if you drive around close to your house and regularly charges it after every trip. Here in Australia BMW claims a range of $1,800 km with a full tank for this 330e but this is definitely a joke. Otherwise vehicle is great with the professional cockpit dashboard and fully optioned. Looks like there is no shortage of semiconductor chips anymore. I love the radar adaptive cruise and lane assist. Mine also got heated steering.
Great reviews! Thank you. We’ve had ours for a couple months now. It’s a 2022 330e rwd. With the supply issues our car came without power seats lol, but aside from that we have the touchscreen and the ‘live cockpit pro’. Most of our driving is short distances and we plug it in after every trip. I discovered that in ‘Sport Individual’ mode with the engine in “comfort” we can drive with the sport gauges and drive it as if it was in hybrid mode and the engine isn’t on all the time. That’s a cool option to have. We drive it in electric mode as much as possible. We love it. 👍🏼👍🏼

I got my 330e Touring in April. So far done 2,500 miles and have a combined 41mpg figure, which to be honest I’m happy with. I have to admit that from time to time I do drive it like I stole it.
Like you, I can’t charge it at home. I live in a terraced house without guaranteed or dedicated parking. I did a 100 mile motorway trip last week and charged the battery to full on the way, drove through the city of Leicester on electric only power and then charged to full on the way home.
I love the car. I do wonder if they will be recalled to fit the ‘chip’ or if it’s just going to to be non-touchscreen for ever?

How do you get on with the auto-park feature? The first couple of times I used it, I was very freaked out. Now I use it all the time. That could make a cool video for your channel.
LOVE IT! totally trust it and let it do its thing now. I was hesitant the first few times. Although it is a little "too safe" on curb distance...better that way round though!
What’s the difference between the Sport or M Sport versions?
If you charge the car daily you will not touch your fuel for daily town/city commutes. I recently drove from Blackpool to Aberdeen (5 1/2 hours 330 miles) on half a tank of fuel and nearly 100 miles on battery (mainly motorway driving). I utilized the eco pro mode with sat nav combination and also used the battery top up feature whilst driving down hill.

On a full tank and full charge I only get 380 miles range and that’s on eco pro. How did you get 330 miles and still have half a tank? I drove from Edinburgh to Birmingham (299 miles) and only had 70 miles left.

Can a roof box be coded pretty easily? I’m going form a 650 litre boot to this. We will be ok fo ready to day but if we go a way we need more like the 650L so my thought is to add a roof box just for uk holidays
we've also just got a roof box for the 3 series, haven't tested it out on a trip yet though!
Does the extra boost only work when car has electric? Meaning if not charged can I still get the 300bhp from it. So if I do a 150mile journey am I only getting extra boost for 40 miles. Somebody help me please
70-80 mpg from charging from charging the car daily. If you do road trips between 200-300km then it will be closer to 40-45 mpg.
Be smart about using the EV range too if you can't charge at home then only use the EV range in city and use the battery charging mode on highway.

this one came with run flats but I hear the ride is better with normal tyres!

Great video George, I was lucky and mine came in March with a touch screen. I find sports individual the best mode with the gearbox set to comfort. The only thing I hate is adaptive cruise isn’t standard. My mpg is also shocking.

@@Bartlomiej2137 Probably because of the chip shortage. I know BMW had a lot of problems with their adaptive cruise control and there was even a period where you couldn't get it even as an option. Same with their Harman/Kardon sound system, there were about 6 months where you couldn't option it, though it's now back. Audi (I believe, could be mercedes) apparently has the same issue but with their sunroof I heard. It all depends on what type of chips are used in the system, certain types are impossible to get, other types are not
@@BinaryBlueBull chips and wiring harness supply problems are effecting BMW deliveries with the wiring harnesses made in Ukraine. Our 330e came with manual seats which I’ve grown to like actually. 👍🏼

Curious to see which options I will get and which ones will be dropped. Did they give you another option to make up for it or did they just subtract it from the price? At least, I hope they did one of those two? In any case, I don't mind the manual seats myself either, my previous BMW has those and I kind of like it too, much quicker and easier than electronic

Why didn´t you buy the 330i? A different world to drive. Also might be cheaper since it weighs over 200kg less
If you set the battery control to 30 or 40% during your motorway runs and off battery control when in the city you may get better mpg, i find the car likes to discharge the battery asap and doesn't "smartly" use the battery depending on the roads

I have had a 330e Touring xDrive for 1 year now. I can charge at home and have no petrol consumption on my daily commute (2 times 10 miles).
On the other hand, I'm traveling from Paris area to south of France once every two months or so.
My average consumption over 1 year/20000km (12500 miles) is 5.53l/100km (51.1mpg). Much better than my previous petrol car (Skoda Octavia) with which I was over 8.3l/100km (33.9mpg) in the same conditions.
The longer distance I've achieved in full electric mode has been 54km (33.6 miles).
Worst consumption in winter with winter tyres, no initial battery charge and with a roof case has been 8.5l/100km (33.2mpg)
Usually i'm around 7 to 7.5l/100km (40.4 to 37.7mpg) on highways (at around 90mph).
That's the most fun car I have had since I started driving in 1985. I'm driving quite often in small roads in the Pyrenées mountains.
About the additionnal weight, I'd say this is felt only in very particular conditions, such has braking hard or curves taken at (too) high a speed.
And btw, it's not that much heavier compared to a 330d.
Overall, so far, I'm fully satisfied with the car.
I forgot to mention: 1 full battery charge of 13kWh costs around 1.6€ here in France.

That car is wasted without a charger mate. i've done 12k miles now and averaging 45-50 MPG on a long run in hybrid Eco. average MPG over the whole life of mine is over 50mpg. im sure youll like it a hell of a lot more when you charge it. look to move to octopus go for 4hrs cheap charging overnight, around 7.5p per kilowatt. costs about £1.80 on a normal 3 pin plug at the 10a limit.
I've got a 72 plate on hire at this time. I've never sat in seats that are so uncomfortable, sorry I tell a lie, I did drive a fiat 126 once. Hybrid makes it fast but not economical. Good looks, great handling, rubbish seats, heavy. Oh and it is so cramped in the back, but I normally drive a superb so spoilt for space.
You should have got the 330D much better fuel econ. and proformance and more boot space

If you've bought a hybrid and don't charge it at home, you've effectively bought a 320i with 300kg of ballast in the boot 😂

@@kdm_entertainment It’s not a 330i engine, it’s a 320i engine. Although they are basically the same, the tuning & HP are very different.
@@RussellCatchpole The 330e’s produced 2019-2020 has the 330i engine with the letter B at the end of engine code. The ones after has the 320i engine with letter A at the end

My 330e (delivered on February) is also without touch screen which is annoying.
I checked my trip computer today, I have driven total 3,900 miles and 3,300 were electric miles. Since I owned the car for 3 months, I have put in about £100 of petrol. I can charge at work and at home, my commute is around 40 miles. The trip computer can only show a maximum mpg of 90.

When one is searching reviews for considering purchasing a car, it is good to hear average driver's experiences. I made it 7 minutes in to your video and am going no further. Your review is invalid if you never - or hardly ever - use the one part of the car that differentiates it from almost every other car out there. I wanted real-world driving MPG, not an admitted idiot's real-world of 30mpg for using the engine only. I wouldn't expect 200mpg either, but I'd be happier to hear from someone that charges their 330e on a regular basis, as is meant to be done.
