    I've had my 330e saloon for just over a year now. Saving £80 a month in BiK compared to the 420d i had before. Over 60 % of my driving is now pure electric, I charge at home on 3 pin plug and worked out electric running costs are 25% compared to Petrol costs. On a longer run use Hybrid mode and I easily get 70+mpg. On pure electric I can get over 40 mpg with re gen braking and a relaxed driving style. Free charging at supermarkets It's an absolute no brainer. Why do so many car reviewers jump into a PHEV then start fussing about the 0-60 times and cornering on 2 wheels. Only journalists do that in cars they don't own ! You are missing the whole point of a PHEV which for the vast majority of people can use as a full EV on those weekend outings and shopping trips yet on longer runs returns over 70mpg. Another point that is frequently missed is just how comfortable and quiet the cabin is. You cannot tell the difference in noise when the engine cuts in or when the battery takes over. One final point - who puts M sport brakes on a PHEV when it's all about NOT touching the brake pedal it's about regenerative braking and as for heated steering wheel ??? Why do you need that when you can pre heat the whole car on BMW phone app 15 mins before you set off and the whole car is toasty warm !!! Come on Journalists up your game ......

      His insistence on the point of the lack of power without the electric motor available also seems completely moot. Why would your batteries ever be completely drained? Either you were driving the car on track and drained them through many multiple hard accelerations or you did 20+ miles on electric only, and this is obviously not the kind of car for either of those things. On the road you won't be using 300hp very often or you'll lose your license faster than you drain your battery, really you'll use the power once in a while for an overtake and then the car has plenty of time to top up the battery again, and if you're in town stuck in stop and go traffic you can go full electric and your journey might take you 45 minutes but it's only actually 5 miles and again you've still got plenty of charge left.
      This is a review of a 330e as if used as a Sunday morning B road blast car, which is an irrelevant take.

    I took delivery of a 330e X Drive MSport Pro Touring (mouthful!) about 3 weeks ago in Dravit Grey (nicer than Mineral😉). Prior I had had a Golf R 7.5, Golf R 7 and an e92 335d so I am comparing it to decent drives.
    I must say I absolutely love the 330e. I think you missed one of its biggest pluses - it is such a refined car. Harry Metcalfe said the x5 45e was in Rolls Royce territory, this isn’t too far behind. Between the drivetrain, acoustic glass and adaptive suspension it is sublime. I am averaging also about 70mpg. To be honest it makes you want to relax while the R made you want to grab it by the scruff of the neck.
    But when you want the 330e to go it is savagely quick mid range so I have no performance complaints.
    My daily return commute is about 60 miles and I can plug in at home so the car suits my lifestyle, I accept that for bigger commutes the 30d is the better choice (but not as refined). Because of lockdown I bought this without my usual weekend test drive, in fact I hadn’t driven one at all (madness I know) so I was taking a risk but all the reviews were 👍. I was apprehensive when it arrived but after 3 weeks I can say that so far this is one of the best cars I have ever had. Hopefully the honeymoon continues.

    Great review! My father got this 330e xDrive Touring in November. He has to drive about 50 km a day and charges the car at home, so this car fits very well and has a fuel consumption about 2,5 l/100km (so at least twice as good than a Diesel engine). I personally drive the car approx twice a week. The electric range depends very much on the weather conditions. In winter the range can be less than 15km and on a warm day you can drive 50km only with the electric engine.
    Best regards from Germany!

      Good comment. Similar experiences on my G30 530e in Finland. Consumption 2,0 l / 100 km with an average of 40 km / day. In winter the range can be 50 % compared to summer.

    I think what many journalists (not just you) easily forget ist that with "only" 184 hp, about 80% or 90% of the cars around you will have even less power... and on a family trip our '06 VW Sharan 2.0 TDI with 140 hp will be loaded up to 2 tons easily with 5 passengers yet that power still feels perfectly adequate. I guess that just comes from being around new cars all the time (no offense though, keep up the great content!)

      All is relative. I am considering changing to a 330e coming from a V60 D4. My Volvo is 1600kg with 190hp and 400nm. My main concern is the lack of torque, but the electric engine should make up for that. The 330i is really nice to drive, but financially it doesn’t make sense in my case.

    I’ve just bought one of these and took it for its first long run today - Derby to Glastonbury, around 170 miles. I think that this car makes sense for more buyers than just BIK buyers. This was not a company car purchase but a private lease. Got a great deal on it. Reason I say that it is not just suited to benefit in kind buyers is be due j think it will suit our needs perfectly. We do loads of short runs taking the kids to school and my wife driving a couple of miles to work. Rarely more than 20 miles a day during the week. For us getting a great mpg and having the ultra creamy silent ride you get is more important than dealing with the less suitable diesel for these kinds of journeys. I was interested to see what mpg I would get on today’s long ride and it managed a very respectable 55 mpg. I occasionally used the battery hold button which allows you to accumulate more reserves in the batteries and I did notice the love mpg figure drop quite noticeably when I did that. Tomorrow I drive back without any reserves though again I will be able to use the battery hold button to build that back up if I so choose. But I think Joe is a big wide of the mark here when he says you are unlikely to see more that 28mpg once the batteries are depleted. Overall I’m incredibly impressed.

    • @lostcomposer
      @lostcomposer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      So today i returned from glasto to derby, this time running the car from 0 miles available from the batteries. I noticed though that over the course of the trip (which I did entirely in hybrid mode at the national speed limit) 3 miles were accumulated in the battery from regen breaking. Amazingly I achieved 46 mpg. Really please with that. On the odd occasion when I did floor it extra boost was there if I wanted it. It will be interesting to see what mpg we get this week over all the short runs on a full battery. I’ll let you know.

      @@lostcomposer Just took at ~3 degree C 20 mile journey across London with a starting claimed electrical range of 2 miles. When I got home it had done 10 of those miles on electric only. I've had the car for 18 months now and it still surprises me. Low average mph really helped today, but the regen feature of this car is really hard to get to grips with in a short time and none of the reviews I've seen have been able to articulate it properly in my experience. In 18 months my average mpg is 84 with a charger at home, and at many destinations (I work freelance so commute to different places almost every day). Couldn't be happier with it.

    I’ve been living with a 330e saloon since August and have covered nearly 19k in it so far. I’d say on average I get around 40 miles of electric drive daily with what it generates itself in addition to the full charge I give it overnight as most of my journeys are over 100 miles. I never notice a significant power drop when my electric has depleted either.
    I also have averaged 66mpg since having the car in August. So it’s better than my old 118d for sure and I pay very little company car tax and get enjoyment every time I get in the car. Personally very pleased with it

      @Maritime_Pilot1973 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have had mine since October 2019, and covered 26k in it, and totally agree that there is no significant power drop! The reason is that there is a buffer left on the battery when it is depleted, so you will always have the xtraboost power available. Best 3-series I´ve owned.

    I have owned my 330e since December and for me it is the perfect workhorse. I have owned several 330d estates in the past but with the recent BIK changes this makes perfect sense . I only travel upto 40miles a day for my work commute and with charge points at work it costs very little run especially with the very low Bik. Performance wise, I do not miss my previous 330ds. There is the normal BMW driving pleasure and the electric boost surpasses the 330d. The car manages to ALWAYS keep some battery in reserve even when the electric range is depleted (10 seconds of boost always in the tank). I have managed at least 35 miles of pure electric range with the warmer weather (15⁰+). yes the noise pumped into the cabin Is artificial but seeing the dials light up blue with boost is worth while!

I often charge for free… and insurance is cheaper plus i don’t torture the engine on short 4 km trips… plus in a hybrid you can precondition the car - heat up or cool down. There are clear advantages

  • @eddie8742
    @eddie8742 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I have this very same car right now, and I used to own a 330e (G20) Sedan non-XDrive before. The thing that many people don't understand about this car, and BMW is not very good at explaining either, is that the numbers for the range are neither right nor wrong. One way of using this car by driving it in electric mode, which forces it to use only the battery until it runs out of energy. In this mode, you get anything from 55 to around 25 Km of range, depending greatly on the outside temperature and how you drive it --at city speeds you'd get the most. However, that's not the end of the story, because once the car has depleted the energy in the battery it'll continuously recharge it and switch to electric mode every time it has enough energy and gets the chance. A typical long distance trip in this car results in you driving about 1/3 of the distance on electricity, which for a 500Km trip means about 170Km, which is way more than the total range advertised by BMW. For this reason, the advertised range is neither right nor wrong. It is correct in the summer if you drive at around city speeds, and it's wrong in the winter (for the worse) or during long distance trips (for the better), it all depends on how you look at it.

  • @Pouya82
    @Pouya82 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I have gotten more than what BMW has specified. So it is possible for sure to acchieve the numbers.
    Today with the AC on 18c degrees I got 61.2km. Car is Specified at 58km on a single charge. The most I’ve got on a single charge is 66.1km. I got my car back in late July 2020 and my avrage MPG since then (9 month-isch) is : 130mpg on a total of 8077 miles driven.
    Of course the weather temperatures plays in. Below 10c degrees the range is somewhere between 40-50km range depending on pre-conditioning the cabin.
    Around 0c degrees its between 35-42km also depending on pre-conditioning the cabin or not.
    The lowest I got on a charge was 27km when it was -15 to -18 degrees here in Stockholm this winter. But during that time the car would not start in electric mode either, it would start on petrol and warm up all the electric systems first before it even would let the car go into full electric.
    For people who want to learn to get the max out of a full charge of battery BMW videos on effecient driving are pretty good.

    Great Video Joe, I’ve currently got a 530e and overall it’s a lovely car, I agree with you about the electric range and then the suffering mpg. For the typical commute it’s perfect, however, you have to plug it in to get the best from it (luckily I can).
    The main reason buying one over here in Ireland (even as a private buyer) is to avoid the harsh VRT tax. The equivalent used 530d is 10k more over here so, a hybrid makes perfect sense. Keep up the great work 👍 thanks

  • @latlak
    @latlak 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    We drive the 330e sedan with RWD and it actually is possible to achieve those low consumption figures. You just need to let the car do its thing. Adaptive + GPS navigation precalculates the route and actually makes both engines work together. The electric motor engages for example uphill and helps the combustion engine so it doesn't need to shift down. It goes electric only downhill too. We often drive a 500km trip with a lot of Autobahn, we get something like 7 liters per 100km with an average speed of 120km/h there. On the daily route to work and back with Autobahn, B roads and city all together, we already had a fuel consumption of only 2 liters per 100km, of course using up all the electric charge. The thing I wanna say is if you let both engines support each other, this drive train CAN be insanely efficient. Here in Germany this car costs us with a list price of 70.000€ as much as a Mini Cooper S 5 door would cost. In our case as a work car, a nobrainer.
    And in our car at least, you never run out of electric energy. Especially in XtraBoost, it recuperates quiet hardly and makes sure to recharge in moments of little load. In Hybrid or Adaptive it's pretty similar. It always leaves a few percent of electric energy so you at least get the 252hp it does outside of XtraBoost.

    I run a 17 plate 330e M Sport that is RWD only and a claimed e-range of 25 miles but the best I have had is 18 before the ICE kicks in. What makes these cars great is the regen capability. My work commute is 30 miles each way and get 21 miles on pure EV going to work and 25 miles pure EV on the way home (due to the lay of the land). Running i Sport mode has a harder regen capability so works out more economical over time. The car will always keep 9% charge for stop Start and will use some electric power when first starting the petrol engine (I presume to pre-heat the engine). Now that they do an X-Drive estate, I would consider another 330e, although the X45e is very appealing (unless I win some money and can afford the Audi E-Tron RS!). Main thing for people being put off these due to the low EV range, don’t think you have to rely on the ICE if the energy is depleted because the regen is very good.

    I have the saloon / sedan shape, and the most electric only range I’ve got out of it is 47km (29.2miles). Which I think is pretty impressive. It’s the same whether I put it in hybrid eco pro, or adaptive mode. Speed wise it’s a mix of 50kph/80kph/100kph roads. For a 40km each way daily commute with the ability to charge at the office for free, (and not to mention cheaper road tax here in the NL for a PHEV), it’s a choice that works for me

      …and about the same for my X3 xdrive30e:57km best range in summer, 40km winter. Did a 2700km caravan (@1200kg) trip in Sweden last summer averaging 12l/100km and a 1100km skiing trip with roof box and 4 adults averaging a 5.5l/100km. So, these cars can actually achieve some good fuel economy if you use the navigation to help the car anticipate the road ahead on your longer drives. At home, I drive electric all the time as my travels are quite short, total avg is now 5.5 @8000km. Thank you for the nice review👍 One more thing, I have never experienced running completely out of electric juice since the car saves a bit of a buffer.

    Fantastic review, especially the critique of plug-in tech - many thanks! I recently hired one for a week and never plugged it in, never used the battery hold button and yet always seemed to have electric power for acceleration and tootling around car parks. I just left it in hybrid mode the whole time.
    Has anyone else had this experience that unless you want to do pure electric miles, then you don’t actually lose any performance if you never plug it in.

    • @davidbushphoto
      @davidbushphoto 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You are correct. Bought my 330e used and it came without the charging cable. I drove it without plugging in for about one month and noticed the same behavior as you.
      The battery has a minimum charge level of ~20%, at which point the petrol engine will automatically charge it up to maintain that minimum (just as it will charge up to your desired level if you push the battery button next to the shifter). So even with an indicated 0% left on battery, there is still ample charge for Xtraboost mode/Sport mode. Likewise when you charge it up to an indicated 100%, the battery is really only holding an 80% charge. These buffers were built in to ensure consistent performance and longevity of the battery.

    I have just been loaned a 330e X drive by BMW for a week while my 330d X drive touring was having some work done. It's been really interesting to compare the two. The 330e initially impresses with its smooth and quiet start on electric and seamless transition to engine power. However, after a few days I really missed the performance of the 330d which has so much more low down grunt and is quicker for overtaking. The 330e sounds a bit rubbish too if you rev it hard. It's a surprisingly thirsty car too when running just on the engine. Typically 37mpg over 53 miles driven fairly gently over a mix of country roads (17 miles), motorway (31 miles), and city roads (5 miles). For the first 15 miles the average only just crept above 30 without any electric power. My 330d would be over 40mpg by that point and then do 50-55mpg average (winter vs summer) over the whole route. 59 was my best ever. For mainly short journeys, charging the battery every time you park so running mostly on electric, it might make sense to pick the 330e. Once that charge has gone though, it's a much more expensive car (on fuel) compared to the diesel. It's not saving the planet either, over my daily 106 mile round trip commute. With a flat battery, it uses nearly 3 gallons of fuel vs 2 gallons in my 330d. Fully charged, it would still use more, plus the cost of charging it. BMW have told me too that most customers who buy these as company cars don't bother charging them up at all! Isn't the government so misguided / uneducated that they have decided we should all be encouraged to buy these PHEVs yet in my use case, I have proven that they can easily produce up to 40-50% more CO2 than a big diesel? A comparison to a 320d would be even more striking I'm guessing. Another big difference is that the standard suspension in the 330e feels very stiff compared to the adaptive suspension mine has (in comfort mode anyway). It was noticeably much less comfortable on some roads. Good on smooth sections though. I'm guessing the reason that 99% of the 3 series I see every day on the M1 are a 330e is that they are all company cars and bought because of the BIK tax set up. All supposedly saving the planet......🤣

    A very honest and insightful review Joe. My next new car needs to be a 4WD estate and you’ve helped to confirm what I thought I already know - and that’s the fact that PHEVs on long journeys just become ICE cars with smaller engines, smaller fuel tanks and a boot full of batteries!
    You didn’t mention one other issue - the 330e x Drive boot drops down to 410 litres compared to 500 on the ICE cars. That’s only slightly larger than a Golf! Pretty much removes the estate’s practicality.

    2021 330e M Sport, Premium Package, 2WD, non-Touring. I get a solid 25-28 miles of pure electric in South Florida on a regular basis. That is for general city driving and work commutes when driving for for economy. If I drive aggressive, its more like 20-24 miles. If I drive for maximum range, I have gotten 33 miles a few times. At what point does it make more sense to get the 330e vs the 330i? That answer is always. Its cheaper to buy, cheaper to own, cheaper to maintain, and gets slightly better performance. Its basically a slam dunk. If you are worried about higher repair costs, then get the MBI from Geico. $64/year with $250 deductible for up to 7 years/100k miles. Maintenance will likely be cheaper on the 330e for a few reasons. Because you will use the ICE less and the motor is far weaker than the ICE, the overall car experiences less wear and tear on the belts, tires, brakes, and many other items, despite the vehicle being slightly heavier. I would not be surprised if the brake pads lasted 100k miles for a user that mostly uses the vehicle in all electric and hybrid modes the vast majority of the time. As for operating costs, its cheaper in virtually every case except for the user that only does very long road trips, as in, 1000 mile+ highway only road trips and nothing else. Realize that the 330e even with a depleted battery will still get around 34-36MPG in the city, while the 330i will struggle to get 23MPG. That little advantage in highway MPG (hundreds of miles after the 330e battery is depleted) is lost pretty quick once you get off the highway. The tax break is the real killer. It makes the 2022 base to base $4300 cheaper to buy the 330e. That buys a lot of electricity and fuel.

    For those of us who have to pay Benefit in Kind tax, this is the car of the moment. I've had mine for 6 months now and I am stunned at how good it is. I can put my bike on the retractable tow bar and can fit my greyhound in the boot with ease. It is enjoyable to drive when the opportunity arises yet is so refined.
    Keep it in any of the three Sport modes and you will only use the battery for extra power. This way the battery virtually never depletes due to regen under braking, etc, and you can still get around 35-40mpg if you aren't planting your foot everywhere you go - I personally average 33mpg doing this and I am fond of a spirited drive. By doing this you end up with a reasonably fast car that you never need to plug in without paying huge amounts on BIK. You've essentially cheated the system!
    BMW are on a roll.

    Currently have one of these as a rental car via Thrifty. Delivered full of petrol with 0% battery charged. Despite the car having done 2,000 miles on delivery the charging cables were sealed in bags unused so previous drivers have simply experienced a heavy petrol car with poor fuel economy. From a domestic plug socket the car takes about 5 hours to fully charge at which time you then have a very limited range of about 30 miles on pure EV power. Fuel consumption petrol only is quite alarming struggling to reach 30 mpg so unless this is to be a company car and/or you can constantly spend a lot of time plugged in to then pretty much always do very short trips it is not really a worthwhile consideration for a private buyer. Charged up and on Xtraboost it does give that moment of exhilaration pressing the magic button but this is a high price to pay for the shortcomings. Thank you.

Looking at this I still like the design of the older model, particulary the inside as I absolutely HATE the large screens that get full of dirty fingerprints and is always less easy to use than just the buttons.

My equivalent mpgs are well above the BMW claimed 150odd when you factory in a gallon of petrol costs about £5.50 and at 110 kWh units doing around 3 miles to a unit I really cannot complain. Theres a place for a car like this and that's on the drive way of the sensible everyday user who's happy to trickle along at 20-25miles a day max as this can do done for quite literally pence.

    Thanks for the review Joe. I've been considering this even though I'm not on the company car spectrum. I like tech and the gadgetry here with EV mode and hybrid modes just appeals to me more than a pure IC car. I can also charge at home and 95% of my journies are within 25 miles. I completely agree that the EV range is the real downside here. If it did a solid 35 miles (probably claimed 45) then it would be much more attractive as I really don't want to lose that performance on longer road trips for example. The new Merc C-Class seems to tick more boxes here - longer EV range and also more powerful engines so if you are out of battery juice you can at least fall back on something pokier. I almost wish they'd added the EV tech to the 330i or 330D instead for that reason, but first and foremost a bigger battery would have been better. I'd sooner it gained a little weight than ran out of poke.

    HI Joe, HEV's are great for around town driving but not motorway driving as the MPG will drop if your motorway driving on a daily basis but going to the shops and the school runs etc and as long as you avoid the M25 for example the MPG will improve and should be around 50 MPG > ( Note:- The MPG is based on other HEV's on the market to date) if the car is left to work out the most economical way from point A to point B without using that heavy right foot. Its all about gentle use of the throttle and use ECO mode if the car has that mode. I should also point out you need to recalabrate your driving style with a HEV to get the best out of the car at all times. Also avoid the Xdrive model as that will also reduce MPG just like most other cars. Best Wishes Alan B P.S. If your on the motorway all the the time the HEV is not the car for you and should opt for the 330D.

    • @hmi1750
      @hmi1750 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually M25 is so regularly stop start or reduced speed it’s more favourable for regenerative braking. The issue is on longer fast drives. In my PHEV Q5, I do mostly electric driving in town but on the autobahn the 2L petrol kicks in and sucks fuel from the small fuel tank, but regeneration works well too.
      Most trips are 70/30 electric/petrol. Long trips the ratio flips. Especially if I can’t charge at my destination, which is most of the time.

    My commute is 20 miles each way. But 50% of it (in miles) and 75% of it (in time) is in town traffic, the first portion being on a highway (dual carriage way). I think this car would be perfect for that. I’d set it up to use petrol/gas for the highway part and mostly electric for the stop start town traffic part. It would be near perfect for the 80% of its use with range for going further at weekends. If I still lived in England and had a company car, then the UK tax part would be important. I don’t. I live in the US now. Although I do get $5380 federal tax rebate and (if you can keep to $50000 retail) another $1500 Massachusetts tax break. That’s quite significant.

    Nice bit of VT there Joe as always...🎩
    Hope you don't mind, but felt compelled to mention that after watching your videos since lockdown started I've been slowly turning into a bit of a BMW fan. However much I'd love an M3 touring - when they come out - or any kind of 3 series touring for that fact, I've taken my first step into BMW ownership with a 2012 E84 X1 20D Efficient Dynamics Sdrive. Not the most exciting I agree, but as we need something affordable to run, my wife was keen on a smaller SUV, I fancied a bit of rear wheel drive and from what I've read it's a good first step into a BMW, it ticked most of the boxes.
    Anyway, just wanted to share that with you, thanks again and as ever, stay safe and well...🎩

    Hey Joe, great review as always. On the subject of cold engines, I've read that gentle driving, say 2000-2500 rpm, is better for your engine than protracted idling because the temperature of the oil rises quicker.

      I hear this too,,,because higher revs get the oil up into the top of the engine quicker,,,,was probably the guy on Carwow I think?

    Joe, I've had 7 BMWs as company cars. Loved each one, except the last, which was a hybrid- it is a must for company car drivers from a tax point of view but the worst car of any BMW by far. Ludicrously heavy and underpowered. Just doesn't drive like a BMW.
    If you're not a company car driver - avoid at all costs. You've been warned....

      @@JoeAchilles1 Hi Joe, I have to buy company car but I don’t like underpowered car:) I have 330d touring at the moment which i love it a lot; it’s just 3.5yrs old but pcp 4yrs terms is coming to end. I like M340i very much but I have been told it’s not going to.work from company car point of view or if I had to choose pure electric car which one you would recommend? What options I have. I don’t like Tesla’s ..everyone is driving it 🙈 And I like touring cars:)

    Joe great review. Especially the leave and come home in electric. I usually start in xboost to get some oil temp however. But The car is s3 fast without a doubt. And great to drive.

    Very nice and superb car!!! Only 2 useful features are missing: Driving Assistant Professional and Parking Assistant Plus.
    Of sure, a 330 d xdrive makes it more fun to drive!!!

    Drive to work and back each day makes sense it’s a very good commuter but not the ultimate driving machine :)
