Best Mid-Size Crossover | 2018 Mazda CX-9 Signature Full Tour & Review

  • We featured the 2018 Mazda CX-9 GT a couple months ago, but wanted to see what the Signature trim brings to the table. Read our full review: goo.gl/vPkrk5
    In November we featured the new 2018 Mazda CX-9 GT, showing all the changes with the 2018 model year, the differences in the trims, and going on a quick drive with it. While that episode of TestDrive Spotlight ended up being one of the most popular episodes we produced in 2017, we had an overwhelming number of negative thumbs on that video, yet no comments to tell us what was disliked.
    We figured it had to do with the way we presented the trim options, so we wanted the chance to re-film the CX-9 and show it in a more traditional TestDrive episode. We go over all the features of the 2018 Mazda CX-9 Signature trim, talk about it's unique interior over the GT, and take it on a comprehensive road test in all 3 rows of this mid-size crossover SUV.

      I'm sure most people who spend $51,300 CAD on a new Mazda can spell the word 'You're' and 'brand'. You can certainly have your own opinion about cars, but insulting and name calling other people is essentially the lowest you can get in our eyes. If you don't like a brand, car, transmission, paint colour, that's fine. But making others feel bad because they like something different doesn't make the Mazda owner the idiot in this situation.

      el jefe everybody has their own opinions on things and maybe you don’t like Mazda and it’s your choice but you don’t have to poop on people because they don’t feel the same way as you. #letsberealhere

    I really enjoyed this review. I just went from a $91,000 2018 Volvo XC90 T6 Inscription to a $58,000 2019 Mazda CX-9 GT last month and I can honestly say I like the CX-9 just as much. Other than not having the brand recognition it feels just as good as the vehicle I was driving a month ago which cost $33,000 more. I'm loving this ride and both my eyes, wallet, ego and the driver in me are very happy with the switch.

      Changed those just for you ;) But we're always looking at feedback and making changes when we can. I believe the CX-5's front end is going to come to the CX-9 for next year, especially with the changes happening with the Mazda6 this year, we're expecting to see it trickle through their lineup.

    Mazda car is fun to drive, nice design, but it's technology seem to has not improved at all :(. not to mention there is no panoramic roof, no real time traffic in nav, no apple car play, no 360degree camera. 50k dollar should at least has one of these option.
    PS: the little girl (maybe your daughter) is super adorable.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you! We agree with what you've mentioned, and we're expecting to see the pano roof, 360º camera, and ventilated seats on the 2019 Signature CX-9, considering the 2018 Mazda6 Signature will have those features. Someone commented on one of our other videos recently about Toyota, we forgot they reached an agreement with Mazda for technology sharing, and one of the things Mazda will be getting from Toyota is their EnTune 3.0 infotainment system. We did use it last week on the 2018 Camry, and it wasn't great, so we're a little worried about the future of Mazda's infotainment world.

    Didnt you feel the center console limiting your legroom? I loved driving it, but the driver’s seat with both the center console and the door jutting inside, limits the legroom.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe we mentioned it when we featured the CX-9 late last year, how the door's arm rest is just a little too low and gets in the way.

    What are the key differences between the 2018 CX 9 Signature vs. Grand Touring?

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Mainly the interior leather and wood trim, the GT has standard leather, whereas the Signature gets the extended nappa leather in chestnut brown, along with wood trim around the front window controls and centre gear shifter console. Also the front 'Signature' grille lighting wraps around the bottom of the grille to add some unique lighting to the front of the car.

      We're going to do a quick feature on 2018 Mazda6 Signature with a live-stream on Wednesday at 11am ET. We did note during this episode that we expect the 2019 CX-9 Signature to get those updates, including ventilated seats and the 360º camera.

  • @duckie3395
    @duckie3395 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The drive of the CX9 is what sells me. More responsive and feels like I'm part of the car, unlike rivals like Pilot and Highlander. For the Signature model cost, needs to add real time traffic, apple car play and 360 deg camera. That would tip the scales. The panoramic sunroof can be a major issue if needing repair so not a deal-breaker being absent with the CX9.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very true, we think the mid-size crossover segment is getting ultra competitive. We expect the Mazda6’s Signature features to trickle up to the CX-9, but you definitely can’t beat the feel of that vehicle, one of the absolute best!

    It's one the best reviews I have seen in automotive review industry. I drove this car before I saw this video and it was truly accurate. Currently I am driving a 2006 Mercedes benz ML 500 and only thing Mazda CX-9 Signature is short on in compare to MBZ is POWER. But still considering CX9 a option.

  • @ZCT808

    It does seem like a lot of car for the money. But the navigation computer is slow, it is inexcusable to lack Apple CarPlay, especially since they have been promising it for over a year now. Could use a panoramic moon roof. Mazda have come such a long way and it would only take a few minor tweaks to make this car truly exceptional.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      We agree with this, especially now that we've had the chance to drive a lot of other 2018 models. Mazda is definitely behind (but not in last) when it comes to the infotainment. Even Apple CarPlay/Android Auto won't fully save it, they need to invest more in the experience. Right now Kia and Chrysler have the best consumer systems on the market.

    This is a nice car and who cares what other people think, it's your own decision on what you like and can afford... As a matter of fact I'm getting the signature trim next week just because it's what I like and what I want.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very nice, and well said! We find a lot of snobbery exists in the enthusiast communities when it comes to different brands, which is very unfortunate. We would absolutely drive this over something like the X5 or GLE.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe the Signature can be configured with any paint colour! It's just the interior that can only be the chestnut brown. Personally, I'd wait to see if the 2019's get some of the features we've found on the 2018 Mazda6 Signature. The ventilated seats and 360º camera system might be worth the wait, and it would be very odd if Mazda didn't bring those features over for the 2019 model year.

    Hi
    Awsome review. I like a lot the way you explains everything.
    I am thinking to buy a new SUV for 7 passengers, I am in between the Mazda Cx-9 and the Kia Sorento, I like more the Cx-9 but I saw some bad reviews about the Cx-9 AWD System, above all in that where they are testing it with "diagonal test" where the Mazda can't go up, just wondering, in your experience what you can recommend me about it? The Mazda can handle well deep snow and bad conditions?

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We've seen some channels that specialize in diagonal tests, while it's a fun way to show how a car can work, the reality is you'll never be in a situation where one or two of your wheels is off the ground at a 30º incline. We drove this CX-9 in some relatively rough conditions and never had an issue. We also own a 2017 CX-5 and have had no issues with it during the winter. Mazda has a great AWD system in their crossovers!

    Not a deal breaker, but still no Android Auto or Apple Car play makes it seem dated. Mazda did say they would retroactively put it on 2017 and 2018 models once it becomes available however. I am just wondering what the holdup is. Savagegeese had a Mazda3 and he jailbreaked the UI and installed Android onto it himself, which means it's already possible, they just aren't doing it.

      We’ve seen some videos online also about getting AA on the Mazda infotainment system, so from a technological standpoint it is possible. What would you like to see in terms of a quality check? We have produced several episodes recently where we’ve talked about overall fit and finish, 2018 Ford Explorer and Lincoln Navigator comes to mind. We’ve also talked about similar issues with the 2018 Chevrolet Cruze we did, and will be talking about that for our upcoming episode on the Chevrolet Volt. We’re open to suggestions, it’s just hard to talk in depth about reliability when we only have a vehicle for a week.

    I just bought a 15 passenger van for 30k that's making me 7k a month soo.. I don't think I'll pay this much for a pleasure vehicle that will lose all it's value..

      I sure hope so! We drove the 2018 Camry XSE V6 last week and were thoroughly disappointed with the infotainment setup, especially since you need an app on your phone just to use the navigation. That's called Android Auto, Toyota. Just enable it rather than force customers to download yet another useless app!

      Thanks, I think we will! We filmed most of the cars we've driven since this one in this format, so we're hoping to continue to refine and roll it out over the next month or so.

    Hey, do you know what's new in 2018 CX-9 compared to 2017?

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely! We did cover it in our 2018 CX-9 GT video: th-cam.com/video/lEn8vtX1uF4/w-d-xo.html. For the most part the trim options changed around, so allowing the i-Activsense package on lower trims, addition of front parking sensors for GT and higher, pedestrian and traffic sign detection, and more power seat options for the passenger.

    Sounds like you should have a look at the Mazda CX-8 diesel. I'm liking the extra power!! And room but I don't need the size of the CX-9.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Two things we don't currently get here in North America, unfortunately. The rumour has been floating around for years now that the Skyactiv-D engine will make it's way here, but I'm starting to think we won't really see it, and if we do we'll only get it on one vehicle. Mazda had a media event last week for a new engine technology, I think they're going to push that over diesel for this market.

    ... Make the videos available in 4K. We're not savages.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I certainly appreciate that, however we're really not at the point yet where we can consistently film everything in 4K given our budget. Everything we've been filming recently has been in 1080p60 since we're using our phone over the Canon 6D we have, but the gopro we have doesn't shoot 4K at this time.

    • @Tonyx.yt.
      @Tonyx.yt. 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      dont worry, 4k is just overkill, i never watch video over 720p, and yes i'm not living in a cave lol

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the time that's what we watch too, our office is mostly concrete and we haven't had a chance to upgrade the WiFi or run LAN cables throughout yet, so most of the time our signal is weak.

    • @daiokaio
      @daiokaio 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perpetual Radio Networks The reason I recommended 4K is so you can distinguish yourself from other channels here on TH-cam. You're also competing against AutoTrader and Car and Driver here.
      I guess I'm not your typical user. I'm always using 4k stream when available (Fiber 1Gbps connection).
      Good content though.

    Really beautiful car. But does the Mazda already fix their problem with the corrosion?

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      We believe they have, and it's one of the reasons they offer one of the best warranties for corrosion in Canada. They've worked hard to fix the issues they had in the past and win consumers back through their quality products. We haven't seen any recent Mazdas develop rust issues like those on pre-2007 models.

    • @syjojoseph6559
      @syjojoseph6559 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Infact they did fix the corrosion issues. I checked with them through their heaadquaters. They send me an detailed email. Before it was ford they buying the Steel from. I mean very cheap quality steel. They fixed it totally by producing by their own from japan by good mixture and compotents. they said they fixed this as of all models from 2010-2011onwards. Now they offering 7 years corrosion warranty plus option package upto 10 years.

    Just discovered your channel. Thanks for this very informative review. In my opinion Mazda CX is winner in comparison with Hyundai Santafe and Kia Sorento.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, and we’re glad you’ve found us! We haven’t had a chance to drive the SantaFe yet, but the Sorento certainly has potential at the higher trims, but the CX-9 really shines in this segment.
