    I know it’s been over 4 years since this was released, but this video’s intro is one of the best put-together montage I’ve ever seen in a car review video: the visuals, colors, angles and music couldn’t blend any better if one tried. Well done Mr Goose! 👍

    You maybe get asked this a lot - but please do reviews of cars that are 4-5 years into their lifespan. How they’re ageing, reliability, outdatedness, tech etc. it’s relevant to viewers like me (and I imagine many others) who can only afford to buy used cars only. Thanks!
    Love the channel.

    Great review, good quality video in HD, great edit. Great info. BTW: The plastic on the wheels are there to avoid rust issues. The Power rear liftgate have programmable height adjustment. The HUD can be turned off forever if you use the memory settings on the seat. Regarding the complexity of the engine, Mazda is giving 3 years or 6 years extended warranty. A great machine, not the bulky and not fun driving on Pilot, Pathfinder, etc.

    The Germans gave up on the Wankel and Mazda took the design and nearly perfected it. The Germans gave up on trying to eliminate carbon build up as a result of direct injection. They (BMW & VAG)tell their customers to deal with it and get the costly cleaning service. Again, Mazda made it better by clever engineering. Thank you Mazda.

    I know this is from 5 years ago, but your review was so thorough and full of great information. I just purchased a 2016 Mazda CX-9 and I agree with most of what you said, but so far, I absolutely love this SUV. I have always hated SUVs as I'm a car driver and love the ride cars provide, but the CX-9 kept the good parts about driving and I'm happy to have more space, while still having the power I need. Thanks for solid real review!

    something that was bothering me is that your complaint about the engine power falling off in the upper RPMs is something Mazda has stated is by design, but you never mention that. Mazda engineers have stated that they deliberately tuned the output to be in the most usable and applicable range for daily driving for more efficiency. mid range acceleration and highway passing is supposed to be this vehicle's bread and butter. otherwise a solid review all around

    • @savagegeese
      @savagegeese  7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      +Chris Droste Yes its by design by almost every company that does the new generation of Eco turbo motors, all tuned for torque output and not high rpm output, largely because of compression ratio and their desire to not require premium fuel. I don't say it because I assumed its known but your right I should mention it going forward.

    Great review! I LOVE that you actually got under the car with a mechanic. Mazda has made a huge mistake by discontinuing the V6.
    The mechanic was spot on in mentioning the giant increase in the complexity of adding a turbocharger. For folks who keep their cars for 8-10 years this complexity translates into much greater cost of ownership. What do you do when the turbo quits at65k miles. It’s decision time folks. Do you write a check for $2500-3000 to fix it or do you try to sell it? With the V6 there is no need for a turbo and you will save big $$ in maintenance over the long run. So what if it doesn’t get better mpg? Turbos are for unsuspecting suckers.

    Incredible in depth review. Thanks so much. As good as it was, there was one glaring error. While they are not badged, the model reviewed is a Grand Touring model, not a Signature model as he said. The Signature model comes with Auburn Nappa leather seats. Nappa leather is softer, wears better, resists stains, is colorfast, and breaks up all the black in the vehicle. It does not look like a 5 year old child from a labor camp sewed it. It also has Rosewood in place of the cheap shiny plastic he was complaining about. Plus there's additional LED lighting including a bright mode on the 3 dome lights that turn night into day to locate lost items. While the Touring and Grand Touring trims are nice, the Signature trim is crazy nice for a Mazda, and competes with luxury brands,
    Ergonomics are great, you'll use the armrests as they are right where you want them. Nav controls on the console right where your hand lies. While not available when it came out, the nav system can be upgraded to Apple CarPlay/Android Auto for $150, plus a few hours of a handyman's time.
    It is a great ski vehicle. Most people buy 3 row CUVs to avoid the look of a minivan, and end up with a CUV that drives and handles like a minivan. Coming from a G37 coupe, I cringed at needing a big vehicle. It is great in the twisties in the mountains. Most fun you can have in a 3 row vehicle that can tow 3,500lbs. Turbos lose much less power than normally aspirated vehicles at elevation. I live at 9300ft, and run regular and it still is fun. If you have a trip to the mountains, treat yourself to some premium and really enjoy the performance, otherwise regular is fine for most fueling. Extra height allows driving in deep snow or getting to a campsite or launching some toys you are towing. It drives like a smaller vehicle that is lower to the ground, which is quite impressive. Utility and a sporty drive are no longer mutually exclusive.
    I disagree about the HUD and nav display. i appreciate the info without having to take my eyes off the road, especially when I'm towing a couple ATVs on tight hairpin turns on twisty mountain roads, Towing is good, and on the rearview camera when you're in reverse, you can see your hitch ball to easily align your trailer.
    Biggest fault I noticed, is the seat preset controls are located on the side on the front seats. If you are of average height or shorter, you will notice when you sit down you will often hit the buttons and the seat starts moving. i will likely place some raised material around that switch, to avoid that from happening.
    Thanks again for the great review!

    • @tracywalker1816
      @tracywalker1816 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And it's made in Hiroshima Japan. While in theory I'd loe to buy a made in the US vehicle, the build quality is just that much better there. Rosewood accents are made by luthiers (guitar makers).The Signature really is that much nicer.
      If you buy it in the Machine Gray color, it hides the plastic cladding. While I don't like the look of cladding, they put down crushed stone on snowy days, which is often here, and without that cladding, there would be lots of rock chips and eventually rust around the wheel wells.The grey color is a great compromise, as the cladding prevents chipping, and the color hides the cladding.

    I’m very impressed by the technology in the AWD system and engine.
    I’m still glad i went for the 2016 Honda Pilot Elite. It does have a mini van shape but it beats the CX9 in a few areas that are important. Space, comfort, storage, has a V6 engine and no Amazon kindle for the center console.
    Even though it’s supremely comfortable and smooth, you can drive it and have fun. The V6 engine is powerful and has the rated HP/TQ with 87. The AWD is a SHAWD unit from Acura, without the badge; it’s very impressive. You should definitely review it.

    Just wanted to note a few of the stranger things about my all new 2016 CX9. Having previously owned a 2010 CX9 I was looking forward to the side mirrors dipping when selecting reverse, a very handy feature which saved me from wheel rash on many occasions but alas Mazda in their wisdom have decided to delete this feature. To make matters worse the mirrors cannot even be folded away, a feature the much smaller Mazda 3 has. Another thing that irritates me is the accelerator pedal is lower than the brake pedal by enough so as to not allow you to slide your foot across when braking. You have to raise your foot off the gas pedal which is a pain. Why are the taillights, headlights and fog lights all LED but the daytime running lights are old fashioned bulbs?
    When reversing why don't the guide lines on the screen move as you turn the wheel like they do on cars half the price?
    Why when altering the backlighting on the dash does nothing happen when rotating the adjustment knob then all of a sudden the screen goes dark (or bright) in the blink of an eye.
    I have never experienced torque steer like I do when accelerating hard on this car (all wheel drive version).
    In between both Mazdas I owned a Q5 and Range Rover Evoque, apart from the aforementioned oddities I believe that the CX9 is a much better car than the Evoque and on a par with the Audi.

    That is because we got shitloads of reviews of super/hyper/sports cars from enthusiasts. (I am not complaining.)
    But there does not seem to be enough of reviews of regular cars done by enthusiasts like you.

    I don't think you are driving signature edition, it's a grand touring model because it's missing the rosewood trim and blue led lights.

    The decision would be easy for me...go with the Mazda DNA. I learned to drive on a Mazda RX3 and lived to tell about it, what a fun car to drive that was. I also bought a Protege ES new in 2000 (a few years before they switched to calling it the 3). That car was a great balance of fun to drive yet economical and reliable.

      +Jay Thomas Some of the highlight issue is just the cons of being a solo shooter trying to get things done quickly and doing video in prime daylight. I often over expose on purpose because of sun angles. I hate when highlights are blown as well.

    Great review as always. We *need* a CX-7 to fit between these. CX-5 is cool, but an infant seat is not going to fit behind my 5' 11" wife, and I will have my tubes tied before I need a 3rd row. Plus if I ever did need a 3rd row, minivans work so much better. The 3rd rows in crossovers are vestigial at best, with useless cargo spaces to boot. The worst of both worlds. A CX-7 with this thing's huge back seat, the turbo engine and a huge useful trunk would be perfect. Hopefully Mazda follows through.

    Awesome review as usual. thorough, detailed, factual. I'm getting a Signature. Needed a hauler, but didn't want a AWD mini van nor did I want a bland interior. Fun to drive, responsive, intuitive, and comfortable. Very driver centric... Back ordered from factory in Hiroshima, but I think well worth the wait.

    Always a great honest review from you. Overall 2017 Mazda cx9, 2017 Toyota highlander or 2017 Ford explorer. If you had to choose which would it be?

    • @stillnottellingyoumyname8193

      Well. In terms of great reliability the Toyota (Mazda is great too I'm a current owner) in terms of fun to drive great looking and an overall excellent interior the Mazda. It also has more interior space. Depending on which trim you get, Mazda has a livelier engine unless you go for top of the line highlander
      I'd personally just ignore the ford

    please make a v6 or v6 turbo or v6 hybrid or 4 turbo hybrid as an option.
    Mazda larger cars need larger engines options,

    • @Josh-179
      @Josh-179 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Only way Mazda could implement a V-6 is to source one through a joint venture. The lineup is too small and sales too low for them to develop one in house. Costs hundreds of millions to develop an engine. Even Volvo, as a luxury brand of only larger vehicles, only produces 4-cylinder engines now. Regardless, the CX-9 is the most responsive powertrain in class. Drive it. Makes the V-6's feel sluggish in normal driving conditions. Accelerating hard after 75 mph is where the V-6 shines but how often are you doing this with your family risking getting pulled over?
