The NON touch screen is actually a PRO.. I have a CX9 '22 and I can sit back in my seat while driving and have my arm/elbow on the arm rest controlling my entertainment...I DO NOT have to lean forward from my comfortable position and "touch" a screen

I own a 2022 cx9. The comfort is amazing. The engine is very adequate and smooth. It's easier to park than an Explorer I traded in to get the Mazda. The steering is crisp and you don't feel like it's a big luggy vehicle. I disagree with your dislikes of the cx9 but you're entitled to your opinion. Hands-down the Mazda is a star, there is hardly any road noise at all in the Mazda compared to the Toyota. The Toyota was one of the worst with road noise. I love the driving dynamics of the Mazda, CX9 compared to the Toyota. Mazda was not even on my radar when I was looking for another vehicle then my best friend said, do you need to drive the Mazda I did, and all I can say is wow I am so impressed with this vehicle will definitely be buying another Mazda in the future.

I just sold my 2015 cx-9, V6 engine, 87,000, mi, and bought a used 2022 cx-9, turbo 4 cyl with 18,000 mi. I was a bit apprehensive about being a 4 cyl at first but the turbo has faster acceleration and a feeling of power as good or better than my V-6, so I disagree with the comments about needing a V-6, the one I bought has more than enough. Everything about being smooth and quiet is right on. A few things like warning steering wheel vibrations when you get too close to the road edge etc. will take getting used to. As well as all the controls.

I own a 2023 CX-9, traded my RDX and could not be happier. I enjoy your reviews, find them be thorough, entertaining, and informative. However I take some exception with some of your criticisms as to it's size and powertrain. I know you started your videos almost exclusively as a Toyota guy and the Highlander is probably their most comparable model.
The CX-9 is about 4 inches longer and 2 inches wider than the Highlander which is marketed as a mid size SUV. I have no problem in parking lots, it's easy to maneuver.
Powertrain in the 2023 Highlander is a 2.4 L Turbo, same with the Lexus RX350. The Highlander has more HP 265 vs 220 (250 w/ Premium) but the Mazda has more torque. HP peaks at high RPM, torque is what makes a nice driving experience. Also 0-60 times the CX-9 is faster at 7.1 seconds vs the new Highlander at 8.0. I don't think it's fair to call the CX-9 underpowered.
Pricing also favors the CX-9, compare apples to apples and the CX-9 is $4000 or more less expensive.
I enjoy your reviews but think you may have been a little unfair with the Mazda.

And enough room for four adults to travel 300 to 600 miles on short vacations with luggage. I'd like a bigger engine or a hybrid option, but Mazda has been dragging its feet in that department.

While I respect CCN's opinions and find him very knowledgeable overall, I feel that his comments regarding the CX-9 engine are not aligned with my experience. I find the engine very adequate for the vehicle, its very smooth, it doesnt need to be pushed hard to get it moving, and it doesnt rattle. He must have gotten a bad sample to evaluate. My concern for this engine is with regard to longevity. There are known issues with cylinder head cracking and coolant leaks resulting. I wish he would have addressed that issue since I don''t know the magnitude or number of vehicles affected with this problem.

The rear centre console is fine if you have teens/adult children or you use this as a work car for carrying around clients, doing airport runs etc. For the little tackers, as you say there is a full bench seat in the lower trim models and lets face it, that is the car you would buy for a family. The less well equipped models are also more durable for family use as they don't have the fancy trim etc, but offer the exact same practicality and performance at a lower purchase price. In some markets like in Japan, New Zealand and Australia, you also have the CX-8 which still gives you the same length and six seats, but is a narrower car, so easier to park.

I don't think I've ever driven a car with a more "adequate" drivetrain. Not slow, not fast. Gobs of torque under 2000rpm (and nothing home over 4500) Next to know vibration transferred into the cabin. It really just feels like a really quiet and smooth turbo diesel. 90% of the time, loafing around town at 1500rpm. It is def clattery on warm-up, the nature of DI, but it builds heat quickly, and then just disappears.
The high end trim levels def don't make so much sense when you go to the top end, but it seems that's the only models available for review.. The entry level tiers are great value. The GS-L trim here in Canada (I think similar Touring Plus?) Is very nicely equipped, and compared mid-tier CX-5 with the Turbo, they're almost the same price!

I just took my new to me 1 owner 50k mile ‘21 grand touring on its first road trip and I’m really happy with it. The torque gets this puppy moving quickly and is great for those sketchy passes on a two lane road. I actually adore the engine noises and torque steer. Really complements the handling when you’re getting after it. The tech is great inside and out and it’s very comfortable even for me being a husky dude and 6’2”. My only gripes are that the fog lights are not really useful at the stock aiming and some of the panel gaps are weird up by the A pillar and of course the limited trunk space with the third row up.

I am in Australia 🇦🇺 & bought my 2022 CX9GT delivered in September. I paid nearly $68K for mine but Australian $1 is only about 68 cents US. I have done a couple of road trips & find my car quiet & very comfortable & extremely well finished. My other vehicle is a Holden Statesman which is a 5.7 LS1 Land yacht so the size of the CX9GT does not intimidate me or my girl. The GT has the 2nd row bench seat which is far more practical. The handling is great with a sporty feel to it & with the floppy paddle shifting isn't a bad drive. Overall I love my Mazda but agree the seats are comfortable but narrower than my Statesman & touch screen infortainment would be easier to use !

I just bought a used 2021 cx9 grand touring. I must disagree with you on the engine noise. Most of the grunt is under 3k rpm. What this means is that I don't need to rev the engine high enough to get moving. I am enjoying my car. I also rented a ford explorer for 2months before I bought this. I test drove all the v6 SUvs. The cabin is more isolated than other cars in the segment. This is the only good car deal on the market of 7 seaters if you can find it.

That Honda was a float-boat with extremely soft steering, to the point of being dangerous in accident avoidance. I had a 2000 Odyssey - handled like a race car, then a 2005, which wasn't quite as good, but still good. When Honda came out with the 2011 I think they were trying to compete with my father's Oldsmobile!

We have a 2022 CX-9 carbon edition. It has the captain's chairs in the second row without the center console and the 3rd row sits 3 its a 7 passenger SUV. We are older and have no small children so not a big issue for us. We had a nissan kicks prior to buying the CX-9 and it was too small to haul a lot of things plus it had a very small gas tank and not good for long distance driving, it was good city vehicle, its other flaw was it couldn't get out of its own way. Also, the kicks had a touch screen good luck seeing the screen once it's loaded with fingerprints.
We are in our mid 60's and the CX-9 is the most luxurious and probably the most expensive vehicle we have ever owned. The comparable SUVs didn't have as many options and they were more because they were selling for way over invoice at least at the time. We test drove the CX-50 and I didn't like it, it wasn't as comfortable as the CX-9. I forgot what we paid for the CX-9 carbon edition, I think it was like $45K

I have a strong felling that these (with proper maintenance) are going to serve their owners for a good long time, and look good doing so.
A simple six speed transmission ought to serve well over the CVT’s, dual clutch, and 8 or 10 speeds that’ve flooded this market.

Overall, I still give it an A for quality and reliability. 50k miles in 2.5 years and absolutely not a single mechanical concern. I'm waiting for the 2024 CX90. 🙂

I never had in mind to race against a Corvette or a Cayenne when i purchased it, so to me the 4 cylinder engine that it has is way more than enough to have a nice drive from point a to point b. I try to understand your points but keep in mind that the concept of a "family" is not all the time parents with little kids. I am in my late 40's and even though we don't have small kids anymore the SUV has been excellent when some adult friends ride with us in our CX-9 so they wont be playing with the center console doors as you are pointing as a deal braker.

We have a 2021 CX9 carbon edition. It's fully equipped and is an amazing vehicle. On the interstate, driving the speed limit, we have gotten up to 36.3 mpg. I don't know what engine noise you are referring to, but our CX9 is smooth and quiet. I once drove 1,500 miles at 80 mph, and there wasn't any noise as you suggested. Also, our carbon edition doesn't have the center console in the rear. I also prefer the knob controller over the touch screen. If you want to be fair with this trim, you should refer to the highest (or at least equivalent) trims of the competitors. Your review would be much different if you were checking the Grand Touring with a bench. It would be $3k less with 7 seats and exactly the same features except for the Napa leather seats (still leather seats though). As for the engine, we all like more power but you need to keep mileage in mind as well. Many family owners do care about consumption and I don't know many V6s (in similar price tags and AWD configuration) that do 23mpg combined like this 4-cylinder turbo. I agree though that a manufacturer should give options to the customer so the only negative here is the lack of engine options from Mazda. But for most families this engine is absolutely fine. Also agree about this setup getting older but this year this car will be replaced by the CX-90.

Nobody is buying this and putting anything but small kids in that 3rd row. The interior of this car is a nice place to be, yes it would be nice to have a V6 like the Telluride, but then you sacrifice mpg. Compare this to the Telluride, and it comes up a little short. The CX-9 handles like a car half its size, not like a big boxy SUV like the competition. With the bird’s eye/360 camera view I can easily squeeze this sucker into parking spaces you’d never believe. Earlier the same day I bought mine, I was around $900 shy of buying a nissan pathfinder. and those things are enormous in comparison. I also looked at the Highlanders. Twice as much legroom in those in the second row. But then again, it doesn't drive like a big truck either. I think it drives like a car. I agree with some of your other critiques. As for the price, the difference is I got min for close to $4k under MSRP and didn't pay for add ons. The other brands wouldn't really budge although I got real close at one nissan dealership where I was an existing customer and same people working there. And to get those same features in a pathfinder or highlander, you're at $55k MSRP You'd be looking at a Highlander Limited or a Pathfinder platinum select and they nickel and dime you to death now with packages for basic things. The Toyota Distributor (at least here in Texas) always adds in $1000 in port-installed accessories, then you have to find one with the $1000 package for the 360 camera. So now you're at $52,000 MSRP, you don't even get rain sensing wipers, and you haven't been hit with dealer protection packages/mark ups/low ball trade-in offers/etc. yet. Hybrid Highlanders, especially with AWD and desirable trims, are pretty much unobtanium. Unless you're happy with a FWD XLE, the Highlander really isn't worth it at the moment.

Recently drove my boy's family of 4 incl. 2 rear facing kids seats and luggage to the airport. Everything fit. Enough power.Quiet, smooth ride. Excellent handling. And the crowd at the airport seemed impressed with the car's appearance.
However! When they sell you a turbo car they need to let you know not to drive short distances or not to shut the car off for a few minutes when you come off the highway.
We've had the car for 3 years and have just learned about this! Going to be selling because the warranty is nearly up and I don't need the experience of a blown turbo/engine! Bummer, 'cause we love the car.

The oil consumption problem some of these have is caused by defective valve seals, and affects ONLY the 2021 and newer SkyActiv Turbos in the CX-5, CX-9 and CX-30. The Mazda3 and Mazda6 SkyActiv Turbos do not appear to be affected by this issue. Naturally aspirated 2.5 SkyActiv engines for these years are not affected, nor are the 2020 and older turbo engines. Mazda has yet to issue a fix for this problem. Until there is a fix, the Naturally Aspirated SkyActiv 2.5 is the way to go.

There are some points that I agree with you on and others that I don’t. It is quiet, classy, and beautiful, inside and out. I actually love the size of the steering wheel.
I don’t think the third row is as spacious as you say it is. It’s part of the reason I wanted a 2019-the last model year to have a second row bench in the Signature trim. However, having used this car for its intended purpose (i.e., family road trips, etc.), I would have been fine with the center console.
I have not experienced the engine noise of which you speak. Yes, before reaching optimal operating temperature, it’s coarse and unrefined; however, once it does, it disappears in the background. I have driven this car in different conditions. I took a 1300 mile road trip with a full load, including five passengers, their luggage, and a bike up and down mountain passes in the northeast. I also took a 300 mile trip with five passengers and a 1000 lb trailer plus its contents in tow over mountain ranges in the northeast. Throughout it all, I never experienced the engine noise or vibration to the rest of the car that you refer to here.
So far, great vehicle, and I got mine with under 8k miles at a fraction of the cost.
