  • Footage from the recent ARCI Radiofest. Marcia and I had a blast! Lots of cool old radios. I was really wanting to buy a new toy, however the rolling pin was hovering over me! Best that I dont buy, since I am so overloaded with projects/repairs. This was the best radio experience we have had. No pressures/nice hotel/great food/nice people/perfect weather. We really needed the break. I love making these videos for all of you. Let me know if you want more and we will make special trips to cover events. Thank you all for your kind support of D-lab electronics. TD

    Very cool stuff.
I want to mention that tuning bars remote because it has a special memory for me.
My 1st job in a TV repair shop back in 1974 the owner put me to the test fixing a TV that had the chanel changing motor that would start changing the chanels non stop as soon as the picture started warming up.
Well, I figured it out in 15 min.
The reciever in the set that was listening for the 1 bar tone to activate the chanel change just kept the motor running because the Horozontal output tube was giving off the harmonic of the exact tone of the bar in the hand held remoe you had there.
Never forgot that. The shop owner was impressed that I figured that out so soon.
Knowing what I know now, it was not that impressive but I would have did the same thing to a new guy anyway. :-)
All those tube amplifiers, I actually worked on some of those too.
Some people are die hards for that old tube stuff. I gotta say I am too.

Wow, I finally caught up to this after 3 years Now I'm trying to find me. I saw it in the preview but will have to scope the video. I was standing by the Donation Auction sitting on and LEANING on my Philco Model 87 radio hamming it up like a broadcast pro that I used to be. I didn't realize that was you D-lab. I love your products. Had I known it was you I would have given you the radio. Thank you. Gary in Schaumburg.

You don't know how much I enjoy these radio show videos! Thank you so much for doing them. Seeing this equipment from the past is always wonderful, almost as much fun as watching you and Marcia as she pretends to give you a hard way to go about bringing a ton of equipment home. Next time you go to a show like this rent a U-Haul van and see what she does.
Notes and observations about items in this video:
You saw @ 27:14 one of the very first ever portable TVs. They used a rather large and expensive battery that would provide about 45 minutes of viewing time.
At 32"39 is a navigational direction finding radio. By having maps that shows the transmitting tower locations the antenna can be turned and the radio carefully tuned to triangulate the position of your boat on a large lake. These were used before Loran which predated GPS.
That was Setcher Carlson. Set Cher
At 47:56 is a Philco Predicta, a B&W TV made to look like it came from the future. You saw a few others too, Philco made several models. When I was in vocational school someone brought one of those into the the Radio and TV class to have repaired. It stood upright sort of like another one in this video (1:00:50). Beside that second Predicta was an Atwater Kent TRF breadboard. NICE! And yes, that little cathedral had a cast faceplate. Sorry, I can't recall the correct term for that right now.
At 48:18 are two Edison phonograph cylinders. They are made of a hard wax with the groove cut around the cylinder. This was the very first successful method of recording and playing back sound. Sound is recorded vertically in the groove. That Edison dis phonograph in the video uses the same vertical sound groove technology. The Edison players wern't nearly as much of a lathe as the Gramophones and Victrolas because the tone arm weight was not transferred to Edison's cylinders or disks, only the weight of the diaphragm and part of the diaphragm housing. The disks were called Daimond Disks because the Edison Disk Phonographs used a diamond conical stylus and the records were a hard phenolic resin similar to, but predating (~20years), Bakelite.
At 1:17:49 is in fact a wire recorder. These were used a lot by executives although the entertainment world used them too.
Thanks for sporting one of our Museum of Radio and Technology shirts! (Marcia needs one too.) If you are EVER going to be around the Huntington WV area, please do call and let us know. I'd love to meet you and show you around our museum. You have probably met Geoff Bourne and Grace McMillan when you bought that shirt on your last radio show video. BTW, last Saturday and Friday a week before another one of our members and fellow hams was working on a Johnson transmitter. Yes, we have an operating ham shake with numerous radios, boat anchors to older solid state. It's worth bending the course if you are passing anywhere towards our direction!
Thanks again Terry. Love watching your videos.

Thanks for making it to Radiofest Terry. I think you did a marvelous job of covering the event and I especially like the fact that you stopped to talk to many of the participants. The Antique Radio Club of Illinois, Radiofest is still one of the best annual events around. The current location at the new Shriner's Medinah facility outside of Chicago is wonderful with plenty of space, excellent programs and good food. Harry

As a child ( 50's), my dad bought me a battery powered hand-held portable tube type radio. I remember it took a 67 volt battery that looked like a long 9v battery. Back then, I would take things apart to see what made them work, but I was not good at the reassembly part. I have not seen this type of radio since. I really wish I hadn't messed with it.

Wow! Great show Terry! I was thinking I've got a few vintage electronics around here and at my parents house. I have a 1/4 inch Telefunken reel to reel, it's pretty old, some old pocket radios made by Zenith, probably made in the 40s and 50s. I've got two Pioneer stereos made in early 70-72. My dad had an old antique stand up radio that ran on batteries, it was my grandmas. It's in the attic, I don't even know if it's functional anymore. My dad had a Magnavox console stereo, it still works, there's a few other old things we have. Inspires me to see if can't possibly fix them up. I enjoyed the video. Thanks!

I tried to find the commercial of the Hasbro Navy Blinkers on TH-cam. No luck. I saw it in around 1963 when I was a smaller brat.
15:10 - I see my first RCA Strato World radio, just like the one I am currently restoring. Cool! I've watched a lot of these radio fest videos and that is the first time I saw this rare RCA radio. In fact, I had never seen an RCA Strato World before I was given one last month. (Thanks, N6VFH!) Only $100? I have spent more than that for the battery replica and batteries to put in it! RCA VS047 with 6 D cells and 60 AA cells! (From www.elmphotography.com/radio.htm)
15:39 - Phontrix tape recorder from Germany. I had one when I was 11 and it was the best portable I have ever owned.

I'm kinda surprised that for someone who does restorations of audio gear along with the old radios, you just walk on by all the cool glass audio gear with barely a peep and then go on about some junky alien space ship thingy. But you are not alone, whenever I watch the Kutztown videos those guys focus on some pos stuff and completely camera-away from some very interesting audio gear, or rather ALL the audio gear, which is really the main growth area in vintage electronics these days, I don't get it!
