@@kevinbuckler1085same! Even through the packaging says “optimized for spinning gear” I frequently use this stuff on casting gear simply cuz of how thing and strong this line is! It gives me the confidence to use my expensive 10+ dollar cranks and lob them around the thick muck
In the late 90’s here in Australia The original fire line was rough and unrefined but tougher than pretty much any other line for it’s price! and it was an obtainable first super line for many budget angler’s! It looses it’s colour, it’s stiff and doesn’t cast but still superior to mono! It’s rough textured but it’s durable compared with most braided lines of the era! Also the wax coating breaks down and the line becomes more limp in time, as with all braids but this is especially rigid when new!
@@teeanahera8949 yeah I couldn’t remember exactly when it was released but I can remember buying my first spool of 14lb! It’s easy to remember as a friend offered to try and break it! Long story short the cuts he sustained will be kept in mind and I’m pretty neither of us will forget!
knowing the actual breaking strength is much higher than claimed, then i´ll take the smaller pe number for smaller diameter but will still have more breaking strength
Breaking at over 200% is not disappointing. Are you giving lines with higher breaking strength a lower rating just because it's higher than the claimed strength?
I can confirm the abrasion resistance is not the best..in one day the line tore on the shore twice in 15 mins. Had to cut couple of meters to make it work again (the line is only couple of months old and used 2-3 times a month).
I’m interested to know how to reduce the lines breaking strain by more than 50% with an fg knot? Every time I try I get closer to 90% unless I make a mistake!
Admittedly I’d never tried with fire line I’d stopped using it a long time ago and back when I did it got a Bimini twist double for a uni to uni joint to the mono
That stuff must be 30 or more years old. Let me look that up… 1996 this stuff came on the market so that’s 27 years ago and your spool looks about that old. I have two spools Berkeley Solutions that were used to catch fish in the Cambrian period, 530 million years ago. 😅 It is not fused but has that same tendency to hold a curve when bent! I wonder if your line coating has oxidised and therefore smelling badly. This episode caused me to look at my line “collection” and yes, I have a shite load of early braid, unopened. It looks like ship’s hawser compared to modern multi strand braids. That Fireline is still for sale!!! 😮
Can anyone recommend a good braid or any line for that matter that works well for cold water fishing? I mean very cold when your rod guides are freezing up. I thought fireline would be good because of the waxy like coating not allowing the line to absorb water. Any other siggestions? I've had trouble with stren and berkley mono coiling/twisting too much in cold weather. This would be for a casting technique and i need something at leat 17lbs.
I have never ice fished but the power pro ice tec claims to address this via a Teflon coating. The 5lb line tested at about 3x that breaking strain so it's close to what you need.

I have a request for you if it’s possible. Could you try a test with the uni/grinner knot for a braid test? I used to use uni-uni knot for braid - leader connections but I have found another super easy method. You can just take a piece of mono or fluoro and burn a bulb at the end tag. Then make a simple uni knot and the leader is done goes through guides and never fails. Easier with heavier dimensions 0.40mm and up but works with lower. When the braided line fails you can slide the leftovers down the leader and just tie a new knot really quickly 😁
Fireline has to be one of the worst braids ever created. I have used the 4 strand and 8 strand in smoke, white and yellow and man its total garbage. Frays extremely quickly and loses colour but worst of all they all have a tendency to just snap unpredictably. Every spool I've had has done this! I first replaced fireline with spiderwire stealth smooth 8 which is thick as anchor line and pretty weak for it's diameter but atleast its reliable, doesn't fray easily and keeps the colour for a long time!
@@thelinelaboratory I think it was one of the first braided lines on the market and has kept some market share because of that but I don't think they have upgraded the formula since they started selling the line 😅 Whenever I walk in to non fishing stores here in Sweden that still have a small fishing section fireline is always the line that's hanging on the wall and nothing else...
I had a spool of original spider wire in 20lbs from the mid 90’s that lasted until 2007and caught thousands of fish! It was only lost due to hooking a humpback whale! I couldn’t apply enough drag or pressure to break the line with a single thumb on the narrow Calcutta 150 spool!
Fireline always treated me well. It frayed quickly but but lost next to no strength. Color loss is for sure a thing but does it really matter as long as it performs the same? The only unpredictable snapping I got from fireline was leaving my rods in a car over summer then trying to use them in the fall and either the light or temperature or a combo of the two destroyed the line. It was if it was 2lb test. The deeper you got into the spool the stronger the line was. For me fireline rarely tangled and was always easy to untangle. Spiderwire was a disaster. Virtually every cast was a mess, a birds nest that was unsolvable.I either stripped the line and re-spooled or had an extra spool loaded with fireline. I think the key to fireline was you needed a yearly refresh. You could get a year of good fishing out of it then you had to strip it and re spool with new. You could kink the stuff up, take a load of line and mash it up then pull on each end and it would be back to normal. That stuff is tough. I remember powerpro coming out and I got the 30lb and it would bust way before 20lb fireline. If you snagged up with fireline then you reeling in a submerged and water logged branch, straightened your hooks, or put your hand inside your shirt and wrapped your line around it then pulled hard to break it. If you snagged up in a boat you would pull the boat to the snag, you had to put your hand in your shirt and wrap the line around it then toss the motor in reverse to break it.
Lol 🤣,.. hey there.. I've come to the conclusion that hollow braid is the way to go eliminating the FG or whatever knot connects your leader ,.. a simple rizzuto finish & a whisper of superglue and you're golden ! No lump of a knot going through the a guide ...smooth AF 🤙😎👍

Was the one you used as stiff as this one? Did it cause any issues? I find it very strange and can't imagine how it must be to actually use.
@@thelinelaboratory It wasn’t exactly the same one, but the coating doesn’t stay stiff for long and it becomes quite supple. 🐟🎣

@thelinelaboratory PLS note, the label tells you 30LB Knot strenght, (US standard measuring) you did not measured knot strength.
Where does it say knot strength? And what knot is used to measure this strength?

I think that the mono used in the test broke first.
Just wasn't heavy enough.

I think that the mono in the FG test broke first.
Nope definitely not. I always check that on every test to ensure the braid breaks in the expected spot.

Your FG knots are awful! Maybe stick to testing with a knot you can tie properly!
