    Hey Tom. First, thanks for the video. Second, I have a question you may be able to answer: I know M2Pro and M2Zoom's difference, but is there any way to zoom in while filming with Mavic2Pro? Even digital zoom in, or any trick to zoom without having to edit the films on PC.

    But honestly, it'd be better to use D-Cinelike with reduced contrast instead of D-Log for P4P to match the ISO100 of the M2P.

      I did some tests with my P4P-v2 for a client who does more postproduction then I do. And we decided that the D-Cinelike w/100 iso / -1,-1,-1 for Sharpness, contrast & Saturation was best for most situations for him.
      Like to hear what others have come up with.

      D-Log looks like it’s got so much more latitude for highlight and shadow- but apparently -at least for the Phantom series- it’s not possible to fully bring back your end points to true white or black. It crushes the ends of the histogram.
      D-Cinelike really improves your detail on both ends and allows us to bring the ends back to get the full use of the tonal range. That’s my understanding of it anyway.

    Great points, great tests. You really did you due diligence to create this video. I work in the printing industry and I can tell you the reason your colour test was off so much on both cameras is that all digital cameras have trouble reproducing ink pigments. Both cameras are probably better than they looked in terms of colour accuracy when filming natural colour scenes.

    Thank you for putting this video together. It is very satisfying to have some definitive answers to some very technical questions in the public discussion. I liken these distinctions to those of food connoisseurs and deeply involved photo editors. Most consumers and even many professionals would probably never be able to tell the difference. Image quality at this level is all relatively fine over all. You did however settle many nagging esoteric questions that hard headed photo experts have brought up about DJI M2P vs P2P. Thanks again

    Thanks so much for your hard work, Tom! Your thoroughness is very appreciated!!
    FWIW, I contacted DJI about the M2P barrel distortion and, in a nutshell, their answer was that the M2P simply does not have the onboard processing power (within a small foldable form factor) to finalize when shooting in DLog-M or HLG (10bit) color profiles. ...but it DOES correct/process more when on the standard color (8bit) setting...which I find still surprisingly good.
    Perhaps it would be interesting to compare the two drones both on 8bit standard color modes... as possibly the M2P is compromising maybe a bit too much to get that 10bit color. ...as well as to see if on the M2P alone if there are differences in sharpness between the 8bit in and 10bit color modes. It would be great to see where the M2P compromises and where it does not.
    Thanks again and Cheers!

      Joe, I also wondered about that. So I shot about the same view in Normal Hlog and Dlog and honestly I found that, it was a very cloudy day with blue spots, the normal mode gave me the most detail within the white clouds -excellent dynamic range. But at the same time it is more difficult then to color correct. However the dlog is so flat, that you seem to do anything when faced with difficult lighting.

    Hi Tom, as I said before, great technical comparison. Nice Job.
    Tom, a difficult question I suppose, but I own the P4p v1 and considered the M2p for a back-up to my P4p, do you think when you show up at a clients site the perception is there that the smaller drone M2p is not professional. There is a stigma that bigger is more professional like the Inspire 1 or 2. I have to explain the P4p is capable machine some of the times, I am little concern I would have to explain a lot for M2p. Would you invest in the M2p if you had the P4p or save a little more and get the Inspire 2 or wait for Phantom 5? I am leaning towards P5. The Inspire looks to be a nightmare to transport. I think I would like the portable size of the Mavic series. So torn on what to do......... What would you do?

    Great review, I own and use both these drones. Your "best" settings found by technical methods match exactly what I have found to be the "best" settings found by trial and error, although I never go above ISO 100 on my Phantom 4 Pro V2. However, the IQ of the Mavic 2 Pro is still really good also. (In HQ mode). Love both these drones, and highly recommend them both. The dynamic range on both is also very good. I'm not a hardcore DJI fanboy in that I also fly Autel, but from a technical standpoint I got to call it like I sees it ha-ha.

    I’ll agree that the P4P is sharper than the M2P, but if it takes a video as detailed as this to find that out, then is it really that big of a difference? I’ll pick the M2P any day as it also has the better dynamic range and color like you said.

    What bothers me the most about all the hype around the Mavic 2 Pro is that to get the best video quality one is forced to use the HQ version which crops in the sensor defeating the purpose of the 1 inch sensor to begin with.

    I’m only half way through your video, but have noticed that you didn’t reframe the drone’s cameras, so that they cover the identical area. The P4P has a 24mm (equiv.) lens, the M2P has a 28mm in FOV and 40mm in HD. All of these need adjusting in distance from the chart.

    Great comparison mate. I guess you need to ask yourself the question. Do you wan't something small to travel with or does size not matter to you. If size doesn't bother you then The P4P is your best option. But if you travel and want something that doesn't need a suitcase. Then the Mavic is for you. Either way, you can't go wrong with either of them. There are many videos from TH-cam travel vloggers using the Mavic now due to its ultra small size. And the footage is stunning. If you are a typical TH-cam viewer watching videos on a smartphone or a table. You wont be able to tell the difference. Watching on a 70 inch 4K BIG screen though, can reveal a different story. In that case the P4P comes out a winner in my opinion..

With no real indication of a release date for Phantom 5 in sight, yesterday, I chose to order Phantom 4 Pro +. Why? I wanted to get the best overall performer in this general category actually available now. I gave up 10 bit color, portability and the coolness factor of the Mavic 2 Pro because of the sensor cropping, distortion and slow implementation of promised features through firmware updates to date. Phantom 4 Pro is fully implemented and will, although with less color depth, require less post processing. Yes, i will probably regret purchasing yesterday if Phantom 5 comes out next week. Such is life.

    in Australia we have a company called "office Works" you can get prints as large as that on a single sheet for around $40 Au. Approx 1.2 m x 0.9m. i think the sizes were called things like AO, B0 or something. anyway, I had a couple of lightning photographs that I had taken blown up. I was extremely satisfied with the price and quality. If I wanted a giant test card (which I may well do some day soon) I would get it printed at office works. Great test. I was surprised to see some of the results of the M2P, I thought it was a bit better than it showed in those tests. Still, since the P4P does processing, even in DLOG, it's not a fair comparison of the camera/lens capability on a couple of the tests.
    Either way, I'm glad I don't have the money right this moment to buy as I'd go crazy trying to pick one! I like the M2P for its compactness, stability in wind and it's better low light/night performance. I like the sharpness and quality of the P4P's camera for daylight shooting, and I also like the zoom capability of the M2Zoom. I guess what I want is a M2P with the M2Zoom's lens zoom capability and the P4P's daytime clarity and quality. Lol. I hope the new Mavic Pro comes out soon (maybe around the time the Phantom 5 comes out) and then we'll see.

      I agree-if portability is the name of the game, I'd like to see Tom do a test of this type between the Mavic Pro original-and this.Although the new Pro2 has many other great new features ( more sensors, quieter props and a better radio as examples), which attract me to it.

      I agree. More portable, better flight time, cheaper batteries, more sensors, more capable (hyperlapse etc), more flight range, more dynamic range, but most important... 10bit color is the future.

    Digital sharpness was compared with - 3 2 + 3? What

  • @SuperdanTech

    Considering that you can now get the Phantom 4 Pro for much less than the Mavic 2 Pro, unless portability is a must, the P4 pro is a much better purchase. All comparison videos I have seen from well known youtubers basically show the same results!

    just want to say one thing after "studying, and using sony a7s II for couple of years. They all recomend to apply shaprness in POST, NOT in the camera :) I believe thats a generasl rule, and thats why all pro recomend to turn off sharpnes in cam, this is obvoiusly for us, that always grade footage :)

      I'm always running +3 on the DJI and even increasing some sharpness in post makes it look nicer.

    I still think the P4P is the best drone on the market. I own the Inspire 2 and the Mavic 2 Pro. I wouldn't sell the P4P.

    Same misguided conclusions as often uttered in amateur photography forums. The P4P output has much more sharpening applied and shows extreme halos to an extent that makes it almost unusable as a basis for postprocessing. You can't apply any sharpening on your own on that without introducing more artifacts. And the amount of sharpening you want on a particular scene depends on the subject and the light and everything, so it should almost always be done in post if you're at all serious about your production. Same with distortion: your workflow should include proper profiles anyway, and once you have it automated, it's a non-issue. I wouldn't use the P4P footage without correction either, so what's the deal?
    Not to mention that this test completely ignores photography. With photos you can also use RAW images that by definition omit the onboard processing that all compressed video formats and JPG stills have.

    • @tonoosa
      @tonoosa 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree entirely. There are over-sharpening artefacts on the P4 to my eyes whereas the M2P whilst appearing less sharp, have much less.

      As one who shoots more stills than video I definitely would like to see tests like this for Raw stills.
      I do appreciate Toms efforts here. In practical use for many, this is still a useful comparison.
      For you two previous commenters, how would you do your settings on the P4P to counteract the in camera processing?

    • @izoyt
      @izoyt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      nope, it is not over boosted sharpness. it's poor optical resolution of lens/camera combo on p2p. period.

    • @returnz897
      @returnz897 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for posting this Tom - just been trying to decide which to go for (ok I really want both yeah ... ) :D.
    The P4P is really impressive but with the final sharpness there is still the problem of ghosting around contrasted edges which is nasty. I'd really like to see how the zoom compares too.
