I bought this as soon as it came out. I got it at a discount price + tax which all came down to 1550$. Hands down it's a beast of a computer. It blazes through premier pro and after effects, handles photoshop, luminar and lightroom like they are nothing and I played many AAA titles such as Hogwarts Legacy, Resident Evil 4 remake, Resident Evil Village and many more and it handled everything like a dream. It's mainly my travel workstation but sometimes I use it as my main when my desktop is too busy doing other works. This also handles 3d panorama stiching like a pro. Only problem is that it gets hot so a cooling pad is mandatory.
Thank you so much for your review! I’m getting it tomorrow, so it’s great to know the what to expect as a first time gaming computer user! Would you mind making an out of the box startup guide to optimize a gaming computer? As a beginner user, I’m confused with all the different functions available in a gaming computer.

What are your idle (doing nothing or just plain web browsing/ YT watching) CPU temperatures? Mine's around 45-55C/ 110-130F, and I think it is too high (at home, no sun/ placed on desk)... + A large minus for QA: Needed to replace my unit, as the CPU fan has been making annoying clicking sound whenever even slightly tilted (i.e. placed on laptop pad I regularly use). Update: Got it replaced, the new one much quieter, but gets quite hot even when idle...
Thanks for sharing your insight. I went back and forth this g14 and the g15, but went with this g14. Practicality/portability, lower cost, better keyboard (imo) in g14 vs power, better screen, better speakers in g15. In the end I liked the g14 at the price. Not to take away from the g15 but honestly that much power might be more than I need anyway and the g15 esthetic is less artful to me. Thanks! This laptop is truly awesome.

8:54 when you said to set the software to run only on iGPU, is this referring to ticking the option in Armory crate? Btw thanks for the review, definitely helped my purchase decisions 👍
That free sync display is where its at. I wish my laptop had freesync or G-sync. I finally got g-sync working for my freesync monitor on my desktop and lemme tell ya its amazing. That and a mux switch are the 2 things that will be in my next gaming latop down the road..
@Bob Of All Trades you mentioned at the end of the video that if I'm looking for better gaming performance there are better alternatives, what would those alternatives be?
Fantastic review! Based on your comparison with the older gpus. What do you think would be the performance difference between the 3060 and a 2070S (115 W)? Would the 2070S significantly out perform the 3060? Trying to choose between this or the ROG Zephyrus S15 (2020).
If this little beast had a TB3 port and a thinkpad trackPoint, it would be perfect imo. I have the 4800HS/1660ti version and I love it. But I still find myself often reaching for the old thinkpad for Illustrator and photoshop work because trackPads fkn suck
What I have been most annoyed with since owning the laptop is the Windows 10 install. Once I had everything ready I couldn’t find specific processor power management settings nor have I been able to find the settings that stop the laptop from dimming when unplugging.
@AVOCADO I haven't had any problems with it thus far. I bought mine from a retailer on Amazon that upgrades the thermal paste for the GPU and Quality Checks it, and everything is working great. I'm certain a RAM failure would by covered by warranty anyways
Saw this in person at Best Buy and boy does the dual color design looks hokey--like someone took a couple of spare parts and slapped them together. The grey version looks so much better, but unfortunately it doesn't have the 3060.
For the memory part, they do have an option to solder more memory even though in a 14" chassis. Like late last year, 16Gbits Micron Rev B DDR4 has been in the market. So if you have 8 chips with 2Gbyte each, you do get 16Gbyte of RAM . And 16Gbit Samsung M die, launched more than 1 year ago is also an option. That is how we get 32GB DDR4 unbuffered DIMM sticks on the desktop these days. However I rather the Zephyrus have a thicker chassis with 2 RAM slot , stacking on top of each other. I do not think it will increase the weight much.
Can you cover the 2020 g14 again? Users have been reporting poor battery and heating up after coming from sleep... Asus has also not updated the AMD graphics for almost 6 months now... Very disappointing
I was looking for a laptop that could be a daily driver I could also use on a plane (you know, when thats a thing again). I had pre-ordered one of these but talked myself into a g15. I like the darker chassis more, extra ssd slot, QHD screen, 80 watt 3070, $250 more seems like a no brainer. This laptop would be a better value at like $1350 and they should ditch the white color scheme or make it limited edition. I LOVE the g15 although it's not perfect, I'm glad I got it.
After getting screwed by poor quality control on the G15 twice, I'm considering stepping down to this, since everyone says the build quality is much better.
yes, much better. G15 made by cheap plastic, and screen bleeding like carzy. I mean there are no difference, they all use max q shiity GPU. But G14 feels much premium.
Does your screen suffer from some sort of ghosting or motion blur? I just picked up mine from Best buy and coming off a Asus zephyrus m15-2020, I noticed a significant amount of blurring that is absolutely not present with my M15. It's almost as if the display doesn't update fast enough despite being 144 Hertz.
@@BobOfAllTrades Have you tried playing with custom resolutions? Seems the freesync range is 48-144, possible that's a culprit. I'm going to fiddle around with it, I'll post again if I have any noticeable improvement by closing the range gap. Shame really, laptop is fantastic otherwise.
@@BobOfAllTrades So I tried using Custom Resolution Utility and setting the refresh rate range to 60-120 which ultimately disabled freesync. Less ghosting but it's still highly noticeable. I think I'll be returning this product and going with a QHD model, this is giving me legitimate eye strain and I can't work with something like that. Shame really, cause everything else about the laptop is quality.
Update: I decided to keep the laptop, you get used to the screen after some time. I found it's not so noticeable with third person games. With first person games definitely turn off stuff like film grain and motion blur as they'll exacerbate the problem. It's also less noticeable with newer games than with older games. Like, with Fallout 4 it's atrocious, but I didn't have any issues with the Resident Evil Village demo.

is it insane to dream of a 19 inch slim bezel gaming laptop? it should fit in basically the same foot print as a fat bezel 17 inch beast as yesteryear, but with those extra 2 inches of love. im aware it'd fall far closer to mobile workstation than laptop, but that would make it no less glorious especially if they used the space well. imagine the fans they could run in that, might even be able to source some noctua desktop fans lol
I'm debating whether to buy this, i plan on just using it for mmos like guild wars 2 and final fantasy 14. How well does this handle long sections on titles like those?
I'am still beating myself. My old laptop (P751ZM) started making more and more problems and I decided to get something else. I once was all in for moar power and didn't think about much else. My budget is a bit tight but I managed to get an g14 from 2020 at discount. And when I see the price difference between USA and Poland it frightens me. I got old version for the price of brand new one in your place, I even think I paid a bit more... (I mean it is not delivered yet so I can always turn it back but what else can i get?) The model with similiar specs to yours cost about 2400$.
Bob thank you for your review of both this g14 2021 and g15 2021. I will doing a quick master program and want a new laptop, obviously I will be doing generic tasks for that, you mentioned great battery life, but I also may be traveling away from home (and my gaming desktop) on business trips. So I'm ultimately torn, I know the g14 is smaller and runs cooler, the g15 equally as good at generic tasks but has the extra umph to last for a little longer gpu wise, my take away from both reviews is ppl definitely need to mess with the tuning profiles to get their balance.
I don't understand why can't OEMs just use stacked dimm slots, that way u need almost the same area on the Mobo, while slightly increasing the thickness. Also, I stated this in another video as well (don't remember if it was yours or some other channel's), another thing OEMs can do is solder 256/512 GB onto the Mobo and leave an empty slot if they don't have the space for two slots. Providing a second 2242 slot is alright, but you can hardly find drives that size now.
If I use the 1.4 usb C display port on this laptop to a 144hz UHD gaming monitor , can I game at UHD resolution ? Or would it only put out 1080p to the monitor ? Enjoyed your review. Thanks.
Thank for showing it's relative performance to a 20 series gpu. Also what do you think about the 90hz oled laptops samsung announced coming this month?

However I’m my area in California the $1400 model is sold out in the last week I believe. The still have the $1999 model available in small supply it seems
@@riskygadget4life it’s possible there may be a Black Friday deal. I know with the 2020 model Best Buy had like a $200 discount. But with them being in such high demand at the moment it’s hard to say. Trying to get one on sale may make it extremely hard to come by imo. Cuz they already fly off the shelves as is you know?
10:32 - no, false. I'm an engineer and I can tell you that 100% of the time, in the case of laptops (ignoring tablet/laptop hybrids), soldiered ram is used purely as a planned obsolescence strategy. Asus knows that this laptop is so [computationally] powerful that if they allowed someone to install 64gb of ram that customer would be happy for over 7 years. Arbitrarily limiting RAM is THE ULTIMATE way to control obsolescence in today's hardware market. It's a different story for things like smartphones, but laptops ALWAYS have the required couple of millimetres for a proper two open slots.
I’m fine with that being the conclusion. But why isn’t this the case with their Strix? AW did this with their M15 R2-4 but apparently are bringing back socketed memory for their R5 🤷 I’ve had a few conversations with other manufacturers about single channel memory versus dual and some of them literally didn’t know dual boosted performance. Sadly some of these manufacturers would base their products performance from benchmarks.
should I get this or the other g14 with a 2060? it isnt my main gaming device as I have a pc for that. I would use this for editing videos/pics and drawing. and the occasion game.
@@beebop7039 tnx mate. I've sold today my old g14 and ordered new 2021 model...so I will use the same 3ghz limit. I'm sorry that Bob didn't try same to see impact on cpu temperatures
@@BobOfAllTrades this is correct. I set mine to 20 watts and the 3060 has been able to sing. You can do reg edit to disable boosting and lock the cpu to 3.3GHz which leads to further thermal savings. My fan profile is set so that I can even game silently in some instances with the fans only increasing past 2500 rpm when the gpu and cpu get above 65c which isn't very often
@@ItsMeProday83 Yeah, thermals are really good when you do that. Most games don't need more than 3.3GHz and you maybe lose 1-3 frames in most titles. The Ryzen 9 5900HS is a real banger of a mobile cpu. No issues in Outriders, Division 2 or Red Dead 2 so far. Next months Resident Evil Village will be the first proper test I'll be putting this laptop through. Might require a boost to 3.8GHz and another five watts to 25.

Regarding temperatures, do you think the same registry hack to disable turbo boost you showed us in the 2020 review might help with this years' model? Just picked one up and it does run a little warm even in non-intensive situations.
Fantastic job, your review pretty much covered everything good and bad about this laptop, but is it worth going for the 500$ more g15 than g14 if screen size is not important? To me g14 looks like a way better purchase...
@@alexshine8512 as Bob said, g14 is way better tuned, g15 has problems with temperatures due to higher voltages, I ordered g14 for myself as I prefer less noise and less heat performance, for me it's not worth paying extra for g15..

XPS 15s are still great all-around, but if you're considering a bit of gaming you might want to consider this or MSI/Razer 15" alternatives. XPS 15 is known for 'thermal throttling' hence not really for light gaming.
@@tjdultra6982 I did some research and I'm gonna go with next gen macbook for daily driver, which I can't believe I'm saying that cuz I'm an Apple hater lol
@@satellite3253 (Me too)Don't buy an Apple! Haha XPS 15s are way better brother. I said what I said above on a gaming perspective but for daily driver it's bang on! I got into XPS due to ports(SD card), dedicated GPU, beautiful screen and battery life. Explore the XPS on Dell website, they put them on discounts often so you can choose. Total value right there compared to a Macbook. Hope this helps man
I bought this as soon as it came out.
Hey how is the laptop?
@@miao7002 it's great! It heats up very fast but I would just put a fan right next to it and let it cool up while I play. It's a very good computer and I would recommend it.
Just bought one of these to use for college classes. While doing some gaming on the go as well. I'll probably always prefer my diy pc but this pretty great for something portable
Problem with the laptop is the shared heat pipes for CPU and GPU. if they had their own heat pipes they could squeeze higher wattage for the GPU.
Very good review overall. Thank you for having the first one out on youtube pretty much.
I just bought this yesterday... I can't wait!!!
Just bought mine comes in tomorrow!
How is it?
How is it??
@@arod6079able i ordered mine its amazing. Like a beast. I would like an update pls, so do you recommend this model?
@@shebyf9346 💯 recommend it. This eliminated my need to build a new PC tower. Not too heavy, and plays the games I enjoy just fine and productive when plugged into a ultra wide monitor. The battery can deplete faster when using gpu but it recharges in a decent amount of time. You can switch to ryzen integrated gpu if you want a little more extended battery life.
another fantastic and analytical review 10/10
8:54 when you said to set the software to run only on iGPU, is this referring to ticking the option in Armory crate? Btw thanks for the review, definitely helped my purchase decisions 👍
Damn. I bought a G14 last September. It's been by far too tempting to pick up this years models with their improvements.
Such an underated channel, thank you for the great content keep it up!!
That free sync display is where its at. I wish my laptop had freesync or G-sync. I finally got g-sync working for my freesync monitor on my desktop and lemme tell ya its amazing. That and a mux switch are the 2 things that will be in my next gaming latop down the road..
Yeah I’m probably going the same route. I’m wait for 11th gen Intel.

@Bob Of All Trades you mentioned at the end of the video that if I'm looking for better gaming performance there are better alternatives, what would those alternatives be?
Damn bro, you reviewed tf out of the laptop. Thanks a bunch!
Damn man, the best laptop reviewer by far. Thanks Bob. I just wish this model had black keys
Fantastic review! Based on your comparison with the older gpus. What do you think would be the performance difference between the 3060 and a 2070S (115 W)? Would the 2070S significantly out perform the 3060? Trying to choose between this or the ROG Zephyrus S15 (2020).
I'm Going to wait until July I'm buying S15 2080super model with i7 11gen worth the buy the price has dropped heaps
If this little beast had a TB3 port and a thinkpad trackPoint, it would be perfect imo. I have the 4800HS/1660ti version and I love it. But I still find myself often reaching for the old thinkpad for Illustrator and photoshop work because trackPads fkn suck
Johnny Sins of all trades FTW!
What I have been most annoyed with since owning the laptop is the Windows 10 install. Once I had everything ready I couldn’t find specific processor power management settings nor have I been able to find the settings that stop the laptop from dimming when unplugging.
I've bought the Asus Zephyrus G15 GA503QR, and I absolutely love it
@AVOCADO I haven't had any problems with it thus far.
Thank you very much for this great review once again! Keep up the good work! Have you considered adding TH-cam Membership?
Hey Bob I'm also getting the 2021 g14. Did you disable the cpu boost like you recommended from last years model? or is the 2021 good out of the box?
I like the white build of the G15, but wont buy for other reasons (no webcam, low CPU wattage, no MUX, soldered RAM). G14 too small.
Wait for the legion 5 in stingray white, Ryzen, maxp 3060/3070's and mux switch. Asus is slow
Yes I did. It’s much better than last years model but it’s no 9ms or faster, that I can feel.
@@-Ufo_Abduction- the overdrive option makes it worse. I ended up buying an a 27" 144hz 1440p IPS monitor for most of my gaming. I only do light gaming and generic workloads if I'm off the monitor.
I'll clarify that I love everything about this laptop except for the screen. It's the only low quality part
When you say the USBC will do power delivery, do you mean for charging the laptop? Or charging another device from the laptop?
I love your reviews so much man
A 60W 3060 being equivalent to an almost double wattage 2060 is crazy good efficiency.
Thank you for the video, I’ve probably watched it four or five times times now and barely know anything about what’s going on still. But it definitely played a part in my purchase of my first laptop or PC. Currently just waiting on some damn games to download on this slow hotel Internet…
Oh fun!
Great review as always!
Hey Bob how is Asus G14 Ryzen 7 5800hs with 1650 for video editing ??? Kindly Reply Big Fan
hello, thanks for the review, going to buy this laptop today-tomorrow
if you happen to know, is it ok to take just the same model, but with AMD Ryzen 7 5800HS (8x2800 МГц)?
or is it better to take R9 (+100$ in my country)?
Hey do u think this overheats and the fan noise gets loud when you are doing slight gaming like Fortnite and minecraft for an hour or so….also is the previous years model good too with r9 and 2060..i need one for school work and slight gaming
Im happy with my Eluktronics max-15 with 10870h 2070S 144hz 1080p gsync display.
They fixed missing pgup-pgdown-home-end buttons, but still no insert button, as far as I can see, which is sad.
When playing games like OW, do you feel like the ghosting effects your competitive pvp game-play?
@User 2389 really? I bought it & I don’t notice it. 🤙🏻 so far at least.
@User 2389 Yes, I play fps games, that is literally why I asked the question? 🤪🤭
Liking the work you put into the chapter layout etc. making full use of the tools TH-cam gives you. Thank you :)
is it insane to dream of a 19 inch slim bezel gaming laptop? it should fit in basically the same foot print as a fat bezel 17 inch beast as yesteryear, but with those extra 2 inches of love. im aware it'd fall far closer to mobile workstation than laptop, but that would make it no less glorious especially if they used the space well. imagine the fans they could run in that, might even be able to source some noctua desktop fans lol
bob you were saying that for 1500$ this might not be a the best gaming performance expectation ??? which do you think so is the best to go for now ???
Great review! Was battery life tested with iGPU mode on? I'm curious how much impact that would have on battery life.
Great review! Any chance on getting a lenovo legion 5 or asus rog strix g15?
If you are thinking about getting this, check out best buy. They have a few display ones that are 150.00 off. Good deal!
If I use the 1.4 usb C display port on this laptop to a 144hz UHD gaming monitor , can I game at UHD resolution ? Or would it only put out 1080p to the monitor ? Enjoyed your review. Thanks.
Its a great laptop my girl bought one and sure is nice and fast.
you should put the link for your "Tested" channel. It's not popping up straight away when I just search for it. Thanks
Thank for showing it's relative performance to a 20 series gpu. Also what do you think about the 90hz oled laptops samsung announced coming this month?
Hey Bob, been a small fan for a little bit now and I was wondering if you think it's worth waiting to see reviews on a lenovo legion 5? Or just buy something right now?
If you can wait, why not do so 👍
Biggest concern is what product availability is going to look like over the next few months.

@@phantomphies5802 oh ok thanks
What software are you using to monitor the CPU wattage and temperatures?
AW did this with their M15 R2-4 but apparently are bringing back socketed memory for their R5 🤷
I’ve had a few conversations with other manufacturers about single channel memory versus dual and some of them literally didn’t know dual boosted performance. Sadly some of these manufacturers would base their products performance from benchmarks.
What do you mean? fingerprint scanner is flawless on mine. defective maybe?
should I get this or the other g14 with a 2060? it isnt my main gaming device as I have a pc for that. I would use this for editing videos/pics and drawing. and the occasion game.
Hey Bob, great review! I just wanna know, is it possible to edit registry key and limit CPU @3GHz like 2020 model?
You can do this with any PC, it's just a regedit
@@beebop7039 tnx mate. I've sold today my old g14 and ordered new 2021 model...so I will use the same 3ghz limit. I'm sorry that Bob didn't try same to see impact on cpu temperatures
You don’t need to. You limit the wattage using the sliders now 👍
@@BobOfAllTrades this is correct.
@@ItsMeProday83
Yeah, thermals are really good when you do that.
One question for G14 2021 owners...does your device goes in sleep corectly?! I had 2020 model before and all worked well, now with newer model, when I press sleep, screen turns off but coolers still works. Any solution?
I'm having the same issue with no solution.
Regarding temperatures, do you think the same registry hack to disable turbo boost you showed us in the 2020 review might help with this years' model? Just picked one up and it does run a little warm even in non-intensive situations.
No need. Ryzen 5k series has wattage sliders built into the software. Reduce as you see fit.
Fantastic job, your review pretty much covered everything good and bad about this laptop, but is it worth going for the 500$ more g15 than g14 if screen size is not important? To me g14 looks like a way better purchase...
Is it exact performance as g15 ? Can’t choose between this 2
@@alexshine8512 as Bob said, g14 is way better tuned, g15 has problems with temperatures due to higher voltages, I ordered g14 for myself as I prefer less noise and less heat performance, for me it's not worth paying extra for g15..
