    Really dislike how many companies are moving in the direction of soldered ram only with no room of upgradeability.

    • @racerex340
      @racerex340 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +86

      Has worked for Apple for years and their customers still literally throw money at them. PC manufacturers have also started ramping up more soldered storage as well in the hopes that it drives better product segmentation upsell and some sort of uptick in the refresh cycle. The latter is moronic with PC users though, because with Apple, an Apple user might by the base model and need to replace it after three years but they're almost certainly buying another Apple as there are no other MacOS options, but with PC, a user can switch between brands every upgrade cycle and still retain 98% of the same experience. It's greed, pure and simple, and we as consumers should shun them because of it, if only for the huge increase in E-waste they create as a result. RAM and SSD's should be upgradeable in every laptop or desktop computer, period.

      @@Hathos9 you think ASUS actually would have used CAMM2 in this G14 if it was ready? What do people think about the estimates that CAMM2 RAM will cost roughly 50%-75% more per GB than the same chips on SODIMM modules for at least the first three years?

    • @Hathos9
      @Hathos9 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@racerex340 If they don't, people can vote with their dollars and buy laptops that are using CAMM2. That said, right now, I prefer soldered LPDDR5X on a thin laptop over DDR5 so I'm not faulting manufacturers for soldered this year. Next year, I will fault them and call them out.

    5:16 so they say they went proprietary because USBC can only do 240W and the ASUS connector can do 350W....but then the laptop itself only pulls 180W as an absolute maximum...so why didn't they just do USBC and make everyone's lives easier?

      Agreed! We shouldn't take ASUS' word at it. If theirs is better than USB-C, they really would have shown the working out for it. I wouldn't be surprised if it was 'compared to the worst ever USB-C charger we could find, and only by 1%'.

    • @fix0the0spade

      Moving away from the barrel connector does strike me as bizarre. There's lots of good quality power bricks out there that use the old school barrel connector. As for USB-C charging, that has it's own issues of fragility and for voltage regulators melting on the laptop's motherboard. I can see why ASUS would want to have a dedicated charging port that handles only power without worrying about data, but the new connector looks like a miss for me.

    4070 ruins the balance in a bad way. Costs way too much due to 70 series branding yet comes with only 8GB VRAM. It stinks badly. Imagine paying 2500 usd+ for laptop with 8GB VRAM.
    The 12GB 4080 125W G14 2023 remains a unique option as it's literally the only laptop on the planet to pair a pheonix range APU with a 4080 giving both good battery life and exceptional performance for the form factor.
    For instance the 4080 125W is 50% faster than the 90W 4070 on the 2024 G14 and let's not forget 50% more VRAM! The old G14 also had on upgradable memory stick and with around 170W overall thermal capacity - it was an engineering marvel. The tiny thing hits a whopping 19k on CBR23 multicore when undervolted as the 7940HS has official support for curve optimizer!
    The 2023 4080 G14 had no competition but the 2024 G14 has plenty of competition.

    I have both. The 2024 is just simply more enjoyable overall. The 2023 is a faster gamer, however. It has a more "normal" display resolution as well. It does run hotter though. I hit 95C on the CPU frequently on the 2023. Don't have this issue on the 2024. If I had to pick it would be the 2024, obviously. But I practically stole the 2023. It was the display model at the BestBuy in San Francisco and I got it for very cheap ($800). Lots of greasy fingers touched it, but with a little elbow grease, love, and repasting became a formidable system that is in perfect condition now. Now damage or wear at all. I got the 2024 on sale last week for $1100. I just had to at that price. The plan was to use both and see if the additional cost of the 2024 was worth it. Turns out it was, but I'll be keeping both.

    I bought the 2022 G14 based on all the great reviews, but unfortunately, my experience has been disappointing. Despite one RMA, the motherboard developed issues that cause games to crash repeatedly. After researching online, I found that this seems to be a common problem with G14 laptops. For anyone considering buying one, I'd strongly recommend getting an extended warranty from the seller.

  • @supremacy98

    It's hard to say that this laptop are for gaming enthusiast anymore. With the lack of upgradibility, such high res screen for the small form factor and lower tdp, it's definitely not for the hardcore gamer, but it might be the windows macbook killer that we're looking for. Students doing coding, video editing or 3D design work definitely could consider this over other 16 inch gaming laptops and over macbooks. I'm actually quite happy to see how thin and light the G14 has become, but I do wish that it's maybe 50-100 grams lighter or a few cm thicker to give it a larger battery, imagine the battery life of the G14 if it has a 99.9Whr battery when it's already so good with 73Whr

    Fps compromise is nothing. As long as you can get 60fps consistently in all games, it's great. My 2021 g14 averaged about 80-90 fps on unlimited fps setting, maxed out, on 144hz, and was still buttery smooth but stuttered a bit because game isn't optimized for that fps. So I switched display and game to 60fps/hz and it was even smoother than ever. You're not missing out on much here for everything else that's included. My 2021 g14 lasted 3 years with no issues until I broke it. I think the g14 will be a nice upgrade for me with that beautiful display and thinner design! And I know it will last more than a few years if it still holds up to its name. Definitely going to get it. Asus rog serious is absolutely the best quality and value of there. By the way is it more worth saving more and getting the rtx 4070 model over the 60?

    Oled sucks for longevity and to constantly have to baby the display when its degrading is going to happen no matter what preventions a person takes. Ips/mini led would have been way better for the new design. I dont understand why no youtuber talks about the burn in on oled. • @NANOTECHYT
    @NANOTECHYT 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    So let's get this straight... There's no RAM upgradeability anymore, they removed it. They removed fingerprint unlocking too. The CPU performs similarly, but the GPU performs worse. The re-designed chassis is better in some ways but worse in others, but aesthetically imo it looks worse. They use a proprietary charging port instead of USB-C, despite the laptop not drawing more than 180W, which is within the USB-C spec so they could've used USB-C anyway. The screen is now OLED, except it's dimmer and you have the risk of burn in, it's also slower in terms of refresh rate too, so why exactly would you want that on a "gaming laptop"? On a professional laptop, sure the screen makes sense, but not on a laptop geared towards gaming, I'd much prefer as a gamer 240Hz IPS or 360 Hz VA/TN or something miniLED instead. They also bumped up the price outside of the U.S to kick anyone in the nuts who was even looking at this as an option. How exactly is this a win or a better product? Looks like trash to me, the only improvement I can say is that the speakers are better and the keyboard deck doesn't flex anymore. Otherwise the 2023 G14 is better.

    • @cameronbosch1213
      @cameronbosch1213 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Or even the 2023/2024 Razer Blade 14. It literally had everything but fingerprint unlocking (it still has an IR camera for unlocking). Literally the speakers are better on the G14 and that's it!? The price isn't even that much better than the Blade 14 anymore!

      Imagine this scenario: the 2024 G14, sporting the familiar design of its 2023 predecessor but with a supposedly 'new' CPU. It's hard to ignite enthusiasm for a product that appears to be only a minor iteration. In contrast, what I'm presenting offers something novel to capture interest. Yes, it may perform slower than the previous generation, but it's essential to remember that there's no such thing as a perfect gaming laptop. Companies may provide everything but also make trade-offs. I'm optimistic that ASUS will enhance performance in the 2025 models, as we've witnessed this trend repeatedly.

For me the '24 is a perfect fit, & especially knowing that I'm supposed & expected to get a '23 if that wasn't the case for me, I'm not too worried about what they're doing, it's not like they killed the '23 anyways!

    I'm really glad you agree with my opinion on the G14. I really don't get why people are so negative with the comments just cause they disagree. I'm glad Asus is taking the initiative to try out new designs and products. At some point, higher specs just don't excite me anymore. The G14 already exceeded specs expectation when it first debuted. Now, they're moving to a new minimal design with better build quality and I'm all for it. While the whole ram upgrade thing is a bummer, it's not the end of the world. It's definitely a loud minority situation consisting of mostly enthusiasts. I upgraded my G14 2021 to 32GB ram and have come nowhere near to fully utilizing it. Now that I have a PC, I just do my demanding tasks there instead which makes my laptop more valuable for purposes that it's actually made for, portability and convenience.

I have been using silent mode with optimized setting in Armory Crate on battery (which means no dGPU) and on YT 4K playback I am not seeing more then 5 hours battery life on my 2024 G14 4070 model. My audio was turned up to 70% and brightness at 50%. This still seems a bit lower than you guys were getting.
    Any thoughts?

    TBH I would have preferred a lid not unlike the Zenbooks with the stylized Asus logo looking like design lines instead of a single diagnonal RGB. Maybe use the ROG logo instead of the Asus logo in a way that it's not as visible.

    I got that laptop without the oled display. Will it be worth it? 16g of ram, 512 ssd. For $ 999. I can always return it within 2 months, but I'm wondering if an oled justifies the 500 markup

      If it's the 2024 model, ram is not upgradable, I don't like 16gb if you're going to keep it long term. If you think 16gb is enough for you then keep it, personally I think 32gb is safer for the future.
