  • Mazak Lathe Tool Set Angle Less Than 90. In this video I am showing how to set the Z geometry of a tool with an angle less than 90 degrees. This is only necessary to perform once because once you have the Z offset number, you can then vibro peen it to the side of the holder and note what tool nose radius you used to get the number. Different nose radius will have a different Z offset value.

    If you had a Optical Comparator you could get that number for the the tool set "z' shift with out making a test part rite? thanks for the videos please keep em coming

      Yes you can do with an optical comparator. That is how I set my all my VBMT tools. Once I have the number I use a engraver and put the numbers on the side of the holder. All of mine have 3 different numbers on them. They have .007 with the offset and .0156 with its offset and .031 with its offset this way I only have to do it once for those inserts. It really speeds things up.

    I may be over thinking it but shouldn't the angle you cut to measure the tool on the test part be the same as the cutting angle? When it is just 45deg it seems it would be off a few thousandths compared to cutting the test part the same angle as the edge (72.5deg) especially if you have a larger corner radius tool.
    Your channel is awesome y the way. Keep it up.
    I think a good idea for a video would be what the different colors and highlights mean in the programs.

      @mazatroltipsandtricks6816  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks. You cannot cut a workpiece with the same angle as the edge of the insert. The machine automatically adds 3 degrees of clearance to the cut path. The 45 degree test part gets me within .001" so it works for me.

    • @peoplepower1272
      @peoplepower1272 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, that's not actually the case. The machine knows the tool geometry and part shape but does not know the Z error, so when you touch the 45 degree slope and measure the difference, you are accurately correcting the error (as long as you don't move the X axis).

    I am using the same similar holder but with a ceramic round insert. How would i describe the angle for a round insert in the tool data ?

    • @mazatroltipsandtricks6816
      @mazatroltipsandtricks6816  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on what the tool looks like. Can you probe the OD and face of the round insert or do you need to determine the Z offset like in my video?

      @cheizaguirre5494 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mazatrol Tips and Tricks i can prove the X but the z i have to do it like the way u do in ur video but idk how to describe the angle for a round insert on the tool data ?

    • @mazatroltipsandtricks6816
      @mazatroltipsandtricks6816  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cheizaguirre5494 I would use a hand held protractor to measure the first and second angle of your holder to see what kind of angle clearances you have on the holder itself above the round insert, then input that in the control. The first angle will be less than 90 degrees. The deeper you need to machine into the part, the more the tool angles will become critical for the machine to clear the tool holder properly.
