George Jones was the GOAT of male Country vocalists. He was a singer’s singer. And he even had the tortured life he was singing about. Try “The Grand Tour” as your next GJ tear jerker
He stopped loving her because he died … “they placed a wreath upon his door”… “all dressed up to go away” …she came to see him for the last time at his funeral 😢
This is one of my husband’s favorite songs, he didn’t know he had died either . Way back when in the south we would put a black wreath on the home of the person who passed. I only know that because my Granny told me about the tradition
Some of these reactors totally miss the point. It's frustrating on these types of songs that really mean something. Every single one I've watched reacting to this song hasn't gotten it.
This is true love. A man who said he’d love her til he died and it took him dying to keep his promise. My grandmother played this song at my grandfather’s funeral. It still brings tears to my eyes.
"He decided he stopped loving her." You guys are usually really good at picking up on the meaning behind songs, but you missed it this time, Jordan. The very first line of the song tells you everything you need to know about it: "He said, 'I'll love you till I die.'" In other words, when the song says, "he stopped loving her today," it's saying that he has died. This is supported by the fact that "they placed a wreath upon his door" and "soon they'll carry him away." The guy the song is talking about never gave up on or stopped loving the woman the song refers to through all the years. And yes, Amber, that was a harmonica. Now my recommendation is my second favorite country song of all time, performed by Tammy Wynette when she and George Jones split up: "D-I-V-O-R-C-E." It'll be a great one for a Female Friday. You need to do a lyric video for that one, and bring some tissues.
He said "I'll love you till I die", She told him "You'll forget in time" As the years went slowly by, She still preyed upon his mind He kept her picture on his wall, Went half-crazy now and then He still loved her through it all, Hoping she'd come back again Kept some letters by his bed Dated nineteen sixty-two He had underlined in red Every single "I love you" I went to see him just today, Oh but I didn't see no tears All dressed up to go away, First time I'd seen him smile in years He stopped loving her today They placed a wreath upon his door And soon they'll carry him away He stopped loving her today You know, she came to see him one last time Aww, and we all wondered if she would And it kept runnin' through my mind "This time he's over her for good" He stopped loving her today They placed a wreath upon his door And soon they'll carry him away He stopped loving her today
This is considered by many as the greatest country song of all time..and George the greatest country singer. I think he has a lot of great songs. If you want something similar to this maybe The Grand Tour...something a little more upbeat maybe White Lightning or The One I Loved Back Then.
What some people don’t know is they played it at George’s funeral and then live-streamed it. The whole country world listened and cried to it as one last goodbye to one of the most legendary and greatest artist of all time
You guys missed the point of the song. You should have played with lyrics. The reason he stopped loving her is because he is dead. They placed a wreath upon his door and soon they will carry him away he stopped loving her today. This is probably the best country song ever made but you have to listen to lyrics. You guys need to react to the song again and please listen to lyrics. It will put tears in your eyes. Many country artist consider this song the best country song of all time. I was hoping that you would get it. George Jones made a mistake in the live version and he flubbed the lines. This song is too great for you to miss please listen to the song again
I totally agree with you He did mess the lines a bit. They should Give it another listen but not live. Sometimes artists change words when singing live.
@@sheilamatthews7349 I think they also miss the context of it, because in a lot of ways people don't put funeral wreaths on the doors in many places in the country anymore. So it's really not something that their generation grew up with or has been exposed to. They said they're not familiar with country, so they didn't grow up and what will be considered the deep South. That's where this would have been a regular thing for someone like maybe their grandparent to have done. So they would have had the exposure then through an older family member. I'm a New Yorker, but I'm also a GenXer who is raised with parents who were 40 years older than me. So I was exposed to this because of the fact that my parents were much older than my friends. I was born in Brooklyn and raised out on Long Island. BUT it was something we did when my grandfather died. We drove out there and put a wreath on the front of his apartment door in NYC. I think also that they like the music for its quality of how the instruments are played and how they come together. But in some ways they missed it with the content and how literal it actually was. They've really just listen to other songs that weren't as straightforward as this, and none that had to do death. So I think that's kind of why this one through them off a bit.
Yep... they thought she went to his house and then he was finally over her. Missed what happened. I have a personal attachment to this song. My moms boyfriend called our home after they broke up and spoke to me and asked me to tell my mom to please listen to this song. He had a massive heart attack at work that night and sadly passed away. It was as if he knew..... Love you possum.
Hate to say was way off on the meaning of the song! Hope they Redo a reaction with the Lyrics to this George Jones Classic( FORSURE DESERVES A REDONE REACTION)!
@@misstlc7136 Honey... I truly believe that he knew. People who are together for a long time even though they break up. They still have a connection, it's almost like they have a psychic bond. Trust me, I'm speaking from my own life experience. I always seem to get a feeling within myself when my ex-fiance who I pretty much known forever is in trouble. We met at 13, started dating at 15, and we're together on and off for almost 20 years. It's just something in your heart, when you get a strange feeling that you know, then you just know~if that makes sense. I really do believe that in his heart, he felt that he needed to square up everything with her & and clear the record about where he stood with everything between them. ❤️❤️❤️
Somebody once said, " George sings a song so sad it'll make your dog cry." When George sings a song it stays sung!! That's why Ol' Possum is one of the 2-3 best ever.
@@elisebarthalow6075 I have to put Johnny Cash at number one. Don't forget about Waylon and Willie either. I would love for them to do one from The Highwaymen, especially"highwayman". I love Merle too, just saying who my favorite is.
You realize he stopped loving her because he died right? They placed a wreath on his door. They will carry him away. She came to see him to pay respects because he's dead.
She said you’ll forget in time. Nope! He never stopped loving her and died with a broken heart. Until they carried him away in a casket. Saddest song ever written and perfectly performed. Jones has that emotion in his voice that no one else has.
This was my dads funeral song. He loved my mother until his death. She left him for his best friend. She sat behind me at the funeral. Everyone was silent, but her. She sobbed. She knew. He finally got the last word. I was glad I could help him. Thanks to George.
George Jones didn’t want to record this song at first because he thought it was to morbid but he’s glad he did because it was ranked #1 country song in history.
He also told up and comers to never record a song you don't like because it'll become your biggest hit and you'll have to sing it every night for the rest of your life. :)
Yeah but a lot of people make mistakes though they don't catch the hints the beginning of it and the reef upon a door I mean not everybody knows that that's about funeral processions.
Some people require multiple listens of a song to come to understand the meaning of it. It’s very easy to miss key details, mishear lyrics or lose concentration on a single play.
Yeah, “he said I’ll love you til I die…” and he only stopped loving her because he died...”they placed a wreath upon his door”, and “soon they’ll carry him away”. She came back for his wake/funeral - the narrator wondered if she would, and hoped that he finally got over her, because he died. It’s a song about how steadfast love can be, even if it’s one-sided, although she came back when he passed, so she probably felt something for him - but she left him alone for a long time, yet he loved her until he died. It’s incredibly sad and poignant.
Wow, I almost wrote the same line you did about loving till he died and wreath and carrying him away. I would have wrote the other references you mentioned too but I figured just those should have been enough to give it away
Or, possibly, they're just listening to a new song for the first time ever in front of an audience (probably after being up all night with the new baby) and happened to miss those lines. They didn't comment on the guy being "carried away" either and that's not at all generational. I think they just didn't catch the second half of the hook and that minimized their context for the rest of the song. For a lot of my favorite bands, I could sing you their entire catalog, front to back, in my sleep, standing on my head, with one lip tied behind my back NOW but the first handful of times that I heard songs from them, I guarantee you I only picked up ~45% of the words.
I like their appreciation of music history, but they need to go back to the 1930s and do some listening. I do love this song, but if younger people don't understand the lyrics, they are missing the message.
@@juanitairvine8089 The few people who heard of Paul McCartney likely wonder if he was ever in a boy band. Add to that, I hate to say it, lack of appreciation of different demographics... and that runs both ways. I remember long before I retired, we co-workers discussed the previous night's TV shows. The black folks not only had never seen Seinfeld (then the #1 hit show), but had never heard of him. That's just one example. Country music is more diverse now. Certainly not enough, though.
"Who's Going To Fill Their Shoes" by George Jones is a nod to all the old school country singers that we lost or were going to lose. It's not only about the artists but also the style of music.
There is nobody left that can still bring "REAL" country music back to it's roots. All the current "so-called" country performers are reusing old 70's and 80'd rock rifts with a fake twang in their voice. None of them know what real country music is all about. So enjoy those golden years of country music, because they will never be back!
It's really a shame that you didn't catch WHY he stopped loving her. THAT'S why there wasn't a dry eye in the crowd. This song reminds me of my dad. My mom divorced him after 37 years and it really tore him up. A couple of years later, he developed cancer and he was in the hospital where mom worked. She saw him every day and even took care of him when he was discharged up until he passed 9 months later. He never got over her until that last day. I'm 50 years old and this song still gets to me every time. Please re-listen to this song (album version, preferably) with the knowledge of it's true story he was telling. And by the way, you just played the best country song of all time. Congrats!
Take a better look at the chorus ... "He stopped loving her today, They placed a wreath upon his door, And soon they'll carry him away, He stopped loving her today. " He did actually love her till the day he died. She came to his funeral... Probably George's biggest hit
I can't believe no one has told you how 'Wrong' you were, you stopped at all the wrong times, Rob stopped it at the funeral...It starts with "He said I'll love you till I DIE"..."He stopped loving her today"...wreath on the door...get it? He DIED!!! Love you guys (Listen to family).Maggot 69
George Jones. The finest country singer America has ever had. Period. All country singers would love to be able to even approach George's singing ability. You either have that voice or you don't. You cannot train yourself to get this good. It is a gift. Pure and simple. George pulls you into his song with such an emotional pull and soaring voice that is impossible to forget. RIP George Jones.
Was he popular..? George was a superstars for decades. So glad I got to see him live before he passed. I was blown away by his voice being an older man.
George Jones is among the country music royalty going back to the 50s. His nick name was The Possum. The gist of the song is that he promised to love her until he died. She left him. He stopped loving her because he died, which is the reason for putting a wreath on his door and carrying him away.
This was my mom’s favorite song and wanted this played at her funeral and we did. It hurts every time I hear this because I miss my mom so much! It’s been 20 years in December and the pain is still as fresh.
If that's not the truth I don't know what is... What I've gleaned from interviews and articles he hated this song and they had a time adapting it so he could be understood because he was always so drunk. If you are ever looking to find out about backstage antics check out his backstory.
@@jsjazz12 I didn't mean to imply that you didn't. I just see so many young reactors miss things like the guy in this song dieing that it can sometimes bother me. Dirt Road Anthem is a big part of that because I get so aggravated with the swerving like I'm George Jones line being treated like a through away line, and there are a plethora of other things. The man was so much a part of building the genre but so many miss all of who he was influenceing his music. That comment wasn't aimed at you so much as your comment was a good one to leave the reply too. I'm sorry I made you feel like I was singling you out.
"First time I'd seen him smile in years" was also a reference to the practice of morticians forming a slight smile on someone, while preparing the client's body for services
If you want the "perfect" country & western song, they need to listen to David Allen Coe's "You Never Called Me By My Name" (and be very, very careful about what other songs you listen to by him, especially with the kids around).

Was he popular? Huge understatement. Its because of him that we have so many other great artist. I really hope they have heard more of "The Possum". I think they'd enjoy 'White Lightening'.

And for the record, that song is generally considered to be the greatest song Country song of all time and Jones is considered by many to be the greatest Country vocalist of all-time.
I just remembered that today is the day John Denver, Frank Zappa and Dee Snider stuck it to PMRC 1985. Young generations need to know about the Black Label on music these days.

Lol Jordan asks, “Was George Jones super popular??” Not only was George Jones popular even other country singers list him at the top of their list as one of, if not, the best country singer ever. Someone asked Johnny Cash who his favorite singer was and he replied “You mean besides George Jones?” Waylon Jennings once said “If we could all sound like who we wanted to, we would all sound like George Jones.” And the list goes on and on with all the fans including other singers who consider George Jones one of, if not, the greatest country singer of all time. He had a bumpy career due to alcohol and drug abuse but nothing could keep the fans away. He even made fun of himself with a song called “No Show Jones” because he was bad about not showing up to shows due to being drunk. Something that would cause most fans to never want to see other artists. But the love fans had for him could never be stopped by anything. His career lasted from 1953 up till the year he died in 2013. Y’all haven’t seen anything yet. Look up duets of him and ex-wife Tammy Wynette. Look up the songs “The Grand Tour”, “The Window Up Above”, “She Thinks I Still Care”, “The Door”, and so many I can’t list them all. The man was an amazing singer.
George was just so amazing. You guys should watch his tribute by sweetpea. That was the saddest thing I ever saw.. Patty loveless soldiered through for Vince. Man that was a tough night
This is one you need to hear the studio version… the part where you find out he died, there are studio strings that sounds like the old man’s heart flying up to heaven. It’s heart wrenching. George Jones was amazing. RIP.
He stopped loving her today because he passed away. Such a great song by a country icon like George easily one of the greatest country songs of all time.
You guys are fantastic!!! Love to watch You both enjoy some of the best music of all time… And this is definitely an amazing song… he died so he finally is over her, she came to see him at his funeral one last time…. happy Sunday!!
The absolute smoothest voice I ever heard. He makes me feel every emotion. When he sings a sad ballad, you will be sad when he's finished. The is nothing but God given talent. Great choice.
Just my opinion: It is never--or rarely--a good thing for someone to be introduced to a song through a live performance. Not only do I think it's better to hear a song the way it was heard originally--on the radio or on an album--with all of the original production values, but I often see people not grasping the full meaning of a song because they're not able to hear to it with studio fidelity. To me, videos often seem to provide unnecessary distraction, and there's sometimes a lack of clarity in the lyrics. Like I said--just my opinion.
Agree with you And George himself said at the beginning "this is our new song on the album" he even had to ask the producer could he sing it. That's because the album hadn't been released yet.
By the way, I'm not ignoring the rare exceptions--I am sure we can all think of a few--such as Janis Joplin's performance of "Ball and Chain" at Monterey Pop or Procol Harum's phenomenal orchestral arrangement of "Whiter Shade of Pale" in Denmark. I'm just clarifyin'....
George Jones is my favorite country western singer. I'm German and never heard C/W music before. My husband introduced me to this song. At the time I didn't speak English, but the song made me cry. When I finally knew what he was singing about, it tore me apart. What a perfect love song. I had these kind of love with my husband. He died of cancer, but I still love him and will till my time comes. Then I will be with him again. I know it will be different, but I will see my honey again. My love for him will never end. I miss you so much honey. RIP my darling. Thank you for playing this song. I'm sitting here and cried all over again. I do when ever I hear this song. My husband died 13 years ago, but my love for him never lessened. It is still very strong.
Oh my goodness. I'll never forget Vince Gill and Patty Loveless performing Go Rest High on That Mountain at George's funeral. Poor Vince cried through most of it. George was so loved.
I saw Vince Gill with Brian white couple weeks after his wife asked for a divorce. He cried to most of that concert, but it was obviously uncontrollable during I still believe in you. Been 17 years since my divorce and I still can't listen to country music.
That is a Hawaiian steal guitar and yes that was a harmonica and yes there are fiddles back there too guys !!!! Oh the Hawaiian steal guitar was built to be played while seated .
"They placed a wreath upon his door". It used to be tradition to put a wreath of black flowers on the door of a home where a family member had died. "And soon they'll carry him away" the pall-bearers will carry him in his casket.
Funeral homes still put a wreath on your door in South Carolina...but it's a wreath of white flowers, and always "Quiet Zone" signs a few houses away each direction, that's to slow and tone it down out of respect, so then you always look to see who has a wreath on the door. White is symbolic in the South of having passed. At my great-grandmothers for Mother's Day, all the women wore a red rose corsage if their mom was still alive, and a white rose corsage if deceased. And IDK if this is done everywhere, but if you're going down the road and a funeral procession of cars start to pass, we always pull to the shoulder and stop until all of the cars pass...they always have their lights on so you know it's ended. To this day we still do those things here.
In my family, the body is returned home the night before service and burial. There is a wake, a black wreath is on the front door. Today people think it's creepy, but it's actually comforting and provides closure. She came to see him in the casket.
This was called the golden age of country. Artists like George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Conway Twitty, Tammy Wynette, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson etc all worth checking out.
As a widower, this song hits hard. I couldn’t listen to it for a couple of years after my wife died. I think it’s one of the most beautiful country songs ever. That an old violin from Johnny Paycheck.
Country music is a whole ecosystem. Great songwriters: they are pros at writing songs. Great session musicians, great singers. Great producers. They are all amazing at what they do.
"He said I'll love you til I die." He died, he stopped loving her today. I was raised on classic country, but only appreciated it beginning in my 40's. I love it now, at age 64.
The 40's is about right because that's when life has taken you through many things and the lyrics of country music begin to really hit home and make sense. There's a lot of wisdom in the lyrics of country music.
I'm 57, listen to counry because of my parents. Didn't really appreciate country at the time . Rock music was and still my genre. But when I got into my middle 30 s I started re- listening to alot of country.
Yeah, there is that Goosebump moment in the song when you realize he's talking about his old friend died and then it moves on to the funeral setting but it's just so poignant. It's a story of unrequited love. As far as its popularity, when he was married to Tammy Wynette, who is someone else you should really really really check out, they were regarded as the king and queen of country music.
He loved a woman who didn't love him back and he loved her till he died. "They placed a wreath upon his door and soon they'll carry him away" I heard this song for years before I took the time to think about it and figure it out. He loved her till he died which made the song for me so much more sad. You guys are awesome, love your videos.
In the beginning he said "I'll love you till I die". He died and that's when he stopped loving her. This song is often referred to as the best country song of all time. A LOT of country singers say that George Jones was their motivation and in a way their mentor.
George Jones is country royalty! And this song is heartbreaking. To know he loved her all his life and only his death brought it to an end. So very sad. I'd love to see ya'll react to Bonnie Rhett. She's a terrific country/blues singer. Start with I Can't Make You Love Me. You won't be disappointed.
The reason he stopped loving her is because he died. "they hung a wreath upon his door, soon they'll carry him away". So she came to see him one last time This song is an icon among all country songs. If you ask most country singers they will tell you that this is the song that they respect the most and motivated them. George died in 2013 he was 81. He was once married to Tammy Wynette. She died at 55 in 1998. One of her big hits was "Stand By Your Man". I saw her in concert with Alan Jackson. George was a big time alcoholic and that his most recent wife got him straight.
I knew y'all didn't pick up on the fact that he died and that's why he stopped loving her. I know it's hard when you're hearing something for the first time and having to pause ... you miss those little details ... it's an incredibly sad song.
I attended the 1980 Grammy Awards Show. With my very own ears, I heard the most GORGEOUS, multi-layered/ complex male voice that I ever hear live! George Jones' voice fascinated Vocal Coaches and Music Experts. He possessed amazing range, incredible power. He more often than not, HAD TO HOLD BACK. Jones did not have to strain to eke out a note......I don't beg anyone to believe me; I HEARD GEORGE JONES IN PERSON WITH MY OWN EARS......
She came back for his funeral, he stopped loving her because he died. He loved her his whole life.
I imagine Rob Squad will cringe when they read this. First time I ever saw them so far off on the interpretation. They totally missed it.

I agree with this!
He said "I'll love you till I die",
She told him "You'll forget in time"
As the years went slowly by,
She still preyed upon his mind
He kept her picture on his wall,
Went half-crazy now and then
He still loved her through it all,
Hoping she'd come back again
Kept some letters by his bed
Dated nineteen sixty-two
He had underlined in red
Every single "I love you"
I went to see him just today,
Oh but I didn't see no tears
All dressed up to go away,
First time I'd seen him smile in years
He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today
You know, she came to see him one last time
Aww, and we all wondered if she would
And it kept runnin' through my mind
"This time he's over her for good"
He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today

No matter the music genre. Never be anything comparable to the king Mr. George Jones
Somebody once said, " George sings a song so sad it'll make your dog cry." When George sings a song it stays sung!! That's why Ol' Possum is one of the 2-3 best ever.
George Jones and Merle Haggard. Country's finest in those days.

That is sad I feel for you
The reason he stopped loving her was because he passed away. Such a sad song!! 😢😢
Yes!!
George Jones didn’t want to record this song at first because he thought it was to morbid but he’s glad he did because it was ranked #1 country song in history.
He also told up and comers to never record a song you don't like because it'll become your biggest hit and you'll have to sing it every night for the rest of your life. :)
Goosebumps and tears every time!
I couldn’t believe they weren’t getting it, they are usually on top of listening to lyrics. Literally in tears every single time I hear this song.
Yeah but a lot of people make mistakes though they don't catch the hints the beginning of it and the reef upon a door I mean not everybody knows that that's about funeral processions.
I KNOW
I have been laughing at them. Hey guys it was hid funeral. The saddest song ever written even though one of the greatest.
Some people require multiple listens of a song to come to understand the meaning of it. It’s very easy to miss key details, mishear lyrics or lose concentration on a single play.
Be kind they're young
this song was the biggest song at his funeral...everyone stood up and cried when alan jackson sang it in memory of George Jones...
Upon re-listening to this song...the very first line of the song tells you what the whole thing is about..."He said, 'I'll love you 'til I die'"
It was too complex for me also the first time I heard it, but I was seven years old.
…love till the end. Only stopped loving because he can love no more.
It's unfortunate that younger people don't understand that he died because they don't know what the "wreath upon his door" means.
@@johnplaysgames3120 That is what I think too.

Best Country song ever written and sung.
One of my favorites!!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Yeeeeess!
I don't know if that would do much for them but hey we need to start the knowledge whenever we can
that is my favorite George song.
Congrats!
Very well said.
I’m so sorry to hear this Glenn- I’m 50 as well. Grew up listening to George Jones.
Perfectly put, sorry about your story though, which is so similar to my life story, gave me chills! Almost identical.
You know he stopped loving her because he died!
George Jones...great songs great singing. very popular.
Take a better look at the chorus ...
"He stopped loving her today,
They placed a wreath upon his door,
And soon they'll carry him away,
He stopped loving her today. "
He did actually love her till the day he died. She came to his funeral...
Probably George's biggest hit
“He stopped loving her today”. He died. Only then could he quit loving her.
These two cant figure that out
Absolutely one of the best, George's voice is pure Southern butter.
Now y’all are getting into REAL country music R.I.P. to the Possum George Jones.
Absolutely agree. Today's country is nothing more than pop, and even rap masquerading as country music.
"No Show Jones" delivers
Tammy Wynette, who was married to George is a singer you should listen to. They have iconic duets too.

It really is! A classic among classics...
Was he popular..?
George was a superstars for decades. So glad I got to see him live before he passed. I was blown away by his voice being an older man.
George Jones’ voice is like butter: smooth and rich. Just gorgeous, right?
George Jones is among the country music royalty going back to the 50s. His nick name was The Possum. The gist of the song is that he promised to love her until he died. She left him. He stopped loving her because he died, which is the reason for putting a wreath on his door and carrying him away.
George is one of the best country singers--so distinctive---so beautiful............................
Opening line: "He said I'll love her til I die"
First line of chorus: "He stopped loving her today"
Put it together.
Exactly.
Too deep, I guess.
I get the impression they're somehow unaware the only reason he stopped loving her is because **HE DIED**.
This was my mom’s favorite song and wanted this played at her funeral and we did. It hurts every time I hear this because I miss my mom so much! It’s been 20 years in December and the pain is still as fresh.
For many, many years running, this song was voted the greatest country song ever written.
Another great George Jones song is "Whos going to fill their shoes".

George Glen Jones Arguably the greatest country singer of all time singing the often thought the greatest country song of all times
George was a wild man. He loved and lived hard. He was a huge star in Country Music but his antics rivaled that of any rock star.

"First time I'd seen him smile in years" was also a reference to the practice of morticians forming a slight smile on someone, while preparing the client's body for services
She left him but he never stopped loving her. When he dies, she comes back for his funeral, and he stops loving her because he died.
Years ago, this was voted to be the 'perfect' country song. He loved her until death.
If you want the "perfect" country & western song, they need to listen to David Allen Coe's "You Never Called Me By My Name" (and be very, very careful about what other songs you listen to by him, especially with the kids around).
Remember these lyrics: “He said he’d love her TILL HE DIED”…he kept his promise. He stopped loving her today because he DIED. Was he popular? Huge understatement. Its because of him that we have so many other great artist. I really hope they have heard more of "The Possum". I think they'd enjoy 'White Lightening'.
I can't believe you guys missed the entire point of the song. I love you guys but what part of "They put a wreath upon his door" did you not understand? He died and that is why he stopped loving her. Lol Jordan asks, “Was George Jones super popular??”
Not only was George Jones popular even other country singers list him at the top of their list as one of, if not, the best country singer ever.
Someone asked Johnny Cash who his favorite singer was and he replied “You mean besides George Jones?”
Waylon Jennings once said “If we could all sound like who we wanted to, we would all sound like George Jones.”
And the list goes on and on with all the fans including other singers who consider George Jones one of, if not, the greatest country singer of all time.

Yes studio is better. I think they missed the meaning because the audience was still clapping and drowned out some of the lyrics in the intro.
And yes George was and still is the King of old school country I grew up listening to him and I still tear up when I hear this song.

Greatest voice ever. Never be another singer like george.
Agree. I think they would've understood it more with the studio version - the audience can sometimes be distracting because the DO know that song.
I agree. When I suggested this song, it was the studio version, with the lyrics.
🙂👍
