Maggie, I don't always comment in these videos, but, I thank you and the sponsor for this video. George Jones was one of the greats in Country Music. Hands down.
My uncle used to tour with Conway Twitty in the 70s and 80s. I grew up knowing a lot of these classic country singers. Charlie Daniels used to come fishing in my grandfather's lake all the time. He initially didn't want to record this song because he didn't think some would buy this sad song. It was probably his biggest hit
Love it! The kicker is many of these songs have actually occurred in someone's life Re some songwriters, some artists, or simply people who have experienced whatever and turned it into a song!
A really great man, and a wonderful reactor to review George's music. My Uncle that passed away a couple years ago delivered vehicles for George when he lived in Tennessee and actually drank coffee on his porch with him. I will never forget how much influence George had on his life and both will forever be a part of my life. God Bless you Maggie and keep up the great work.
I enjoy watching the reactions to this song by people who are not familiar with it and I like to watch for the moment that they realize that the reason he stopped loving her is because he has died.
I lived close George and Tammy when they lived in Florida. I went to a few events at their music venue and it was so nice. I also remember several incidents of George being picked up by the sheriff's department for driving his lawnmower and yard tractor after he had been drinking.
I remember Vince Gill singing Go Rest High On That Mountain (Gill's own song) at the funeral for his close friend George Jones. Talk about tears... He barely got though it, and only with the support of singer Patty Loveless.
I'd love to sponsor Patty's "How Can I Help You to Say Goodbye" but Maggie would make me buy every mug that exists I think. And even I can't listen without crying.
Hearing this really takes me back! I'm very young, sitting at my grandmother's kitchen table in a rambling old wooden frame house tucked away in a Kentucky 'holler', the remains of a big country breakfast in front of us, recently demolished, the others having left to start their day. It's only her and me still sitting there, her with a cup of too-strong Folgers that had been boiled into submission in her old electric percolator pot, me with a sip of it cooling in her saucer. On the radio sitting over on the counter, tuned to the nearby AM radio station (transmitter just over the hill), brother George is wailing out his tribute to his departed friend. A cloud passes across my grandmother's face, briefly, then with a sniff she quickly stands, straightens out her apron, and starts putting her kitchen back in order. I'm still sitting there, swinging my legs off the kitchen chair, blissfully unaware of the dark plot twist buried in the lyrics, remembering the singer's face from a recent country music variety show on TV, and thinking how much he resembled a 'possum. Which puts a smile on my face as I scoot down off the chair, give my grandmother a hug, and run off to do important kid stuff....
Listen to "Who's Going To Fill Their Shoes" by George It was words that have only become evident after years have passed. Today's country is more pop than country.
When you listen to George do his song live sometimes he adds a word here andthere, from the original, like I went to see my friend today, this is the kind of thing he does when he sings it live, in the original recording it so I went to see him just today, but we all do the same thing sometimes when we're singing.
I can't help but cry every time I hear this song. George wrote it about his love for Tammy. It was a real tragedy what happened to her. Maggie, thank you.
Ooooohhh! I hope she goes down the Mac Davis/Scott Davis rabbit hole. He was an incredible songwriter. So many reactors are listening to Elvis and are shocked that "In the Ghetto" was written by a white guy. That's just the power of a fantastic songwriter who is also a great storyteller.

Only one other song comes close to being better than this and that of course is Hank Williams Sr I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry. George of course was heavily influenced by Hank.

You know what they say about never forgetting your first? I still have her pictures. Let’s just say this song has an especially deep meaning for me.
I both love and hate this song. I love it because, well it's George, and that's enough of a reason. I hate it because the dude basically wasted his whole life on a lady that didn't feel the same. There's a lesson here people. If someone doesn't want to be in your life then let them go. Might be hard but it's what is best for everyone.

I feel old. I was watching TH-cam reactions to George Jones'song "He Stopped Loving Her Today". They were all missing the mark. Most failed to realize she left him and he never stopped loving her. Then the only reason he did stop loving her was he died. They didn't understand the part where they placed a wreath on his door all dressed up to go away and soon they will carry him away. Very few understood the song at all. Those few that grasped the meaning of the song were like oh wow and a couple of them got tears. But most were just way off the mark. Sad.
A couple of interesting facts. George had a bad drinking problem. He earned the nickname No Show Jones during this time. When recording this song his speech was so slurred during the spoken portion. They had to carefully splice together the best sounding takes.
