I have heard a LOT of LIVE performances, it used to be part of my job. I STILL believe this is the most amazing LIVE performance by any singer ever. No auto tune, no engineering tricks nothing but the talent of a 24 year old man.
What about Midge Ure doing Vienna at Live Aid?
Just remember, no canned music, no auto tune, no lip syncing, this was live on national tv, that makes it even more incredible

Bobby Hatfield’s voice is one of the finest ever recorded. This song is so timeless and keeps getting discovered by each new generation because it is just so good. I never tire of hearing it.
Yes. The movie Ghost introduced me in 1990 as a 13 year-old, and my 14 year-old daughter just discovered this.

This was during the Vietnam War and many soldiers were drafted into the war. There were many love songs about soldiers wanting their ladies to wait for them. This song was perhaps the greatest song for distant love at the time, and Bobby Hatfield sang it with extreme excellence. It still pulls my heart strings.

Back then, you needed talent first and they did everything they could to make you physically attractive. Nowadays, they look for the person who would look good on the poster and do everything in the can to make them sound good in the studio.

@Dale Cooper Ugh, "Mama"'s synth drums are downright depressing considering it came from a band led by *Phil-frickin'-Collins.* Actually, all the synth lines in it are depressing. Phil's voice provides the only variation in the monotony. Not sure what you see in it, mate! If you want to do drum samples, do it the Carey way; with drum pads to give you the samples that you play!
"Unchained Melody" was originally written in the 1950's about a guy in prison wondering if his girl would still be waiting for him when he go out. But, when the Righteous Bros. released it in 1965 it coincided with the big build up of U.S. troops in Vietnam. Then it became "THE SONG" of so many young couples who were separated by the war. In the 1980's it was used in the movie "Ghost" and took on a whole new life of its own!
Ghost came out in 1990.
It wasn't just the voices. It was also that songs then had a story. I was 17 when tis song came out. Alone, no family and I just prayed that someone would love me like that. "i need your love". Can anyone wonder that our generation grew up to be one of the most accepting generation. The generation that wanted to change the world. Some of us helped but now...

On the Andy Williams show in 1965. Bobby Hatfield's voice is incredible in range...they were called "blue-eyed" soul. No autotune. His parents were in the audience and he wanted to be very special.
This is what we call Blue Eyed Soul. This song is considered to be one of the most beautiful ballads ever composed. Many others have covered it but this is Bobby's signature song. It is said that both Bobby Hatfield & Bill Medley wanted to sing it & ended up flipping a coin to decide who would do the solo. This was done in front of a live audience, on national TV, & his parents were also there watching (talk about being nervous). But he absolutely killed it and back then there was no such thing as auto-tune or other computer aided technology to improve your vocals. Natural raw talent was the standard back then. Sadly these days, that is no longer the case. This song regained popularity when it was featured as the main love ballad for the movie "Ghost" starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, & Whoopi Goldberg. In fact, Whoopi won her very first Oscar award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance... My uncle used to call this song "a guaranteed panty dropper" - LOL! RIP Uncle Bernie...
Truly remarkable that this was done live. Spectacular voice. Also, I would highly recommend you watch Ghost. Very romantic, sad, and funny - with a performance by Whoopi Goldberg you’ll never forget. I’m still reciting her lines to this day!

I have seen this performance literally dozens of times, and it gives me chills every. single. time. Bobby is unbelievably talented, hitting his notes perfectly and effortlessly in an era without any digital effects. Just stunning talent. It takes your breath away.
Bill Medley was smart to not utter a note. He knew his partner had it down cold, all by himself. Bobby Hatfield was the best tenor ever, I believe, and I just love that cute, little smile at the end, when he knew he had nailed it. So effortless seeming. What a handsome guy, too!
I think I’ve heard it a thousand times and an still amazed at the voice and emotion conveyed in the song. It is timeless.

Yeah, but they're wrong. The reason older music seems like it was overall higher quality is because no one plays the bad stuff from back then anymore. We hear the Temptations, not the Ballad of Liberty Valance, and we hear this instead of Snoopy vs. The Red Baron or The Jolly Green Giant. In 60 years no one will hear the junk from today either, but songs from groups like Pentatonix, Aguilera, Gaga, etc will survive and people then will be talking about how the 2020s were so much better than the 2080s.

The conclusion was current music does not have the richness of sound and richness of melody that music in past decades has had. They found more redundancy or repetition in melody and lyrics in current music. When I think of groups/bands with rich sounds I think of the Moody Blues, Chicago and the Electric Light Orchestra. They included either big band and/or orchestra instruments in instead of just electric guitars and drums.

This song was originally featured in a mediocre 1955 prison movie called “Unchained”. I heard the story that Bobby Hatfield was extremely nervous because his parents were in the audience that night. When he finished the song, he knew he had nailed it, & the relief in his face was evident. One of the greatest moments in 60’s music. Thank you.

Love your reactions. There was no one like Bobby, never will be. I call this "Bobby's Song." This is LIVE on Andy Williams Show, October 1965. In later reactions, you have a wall of photos. But I couldn't see the Righteous Brothers among them. They were the first of "Blue Eyed Soul, the greatest duo ever. Solo or duo, they were the best of the best. By the wy, those high notes were not falsetto. Bobby was a "counter tenor" a natural high-register Tenor.
It's incredible that this was on the Andy Williams show. Williams had one of the best voices in music himself. I think Bobby was just a little better. Williams likely knew this, but just wanted to share Bobby's talent anyway. That's just how Andy Williams was.

Bobby did this solo. I graduated high school in ‘65 and it was pure talent. Live Performances. No autotune or electronics like they have today. We did have great music in the 60s.

The song was really popular when it came out and then when the movie Ghost came out it in the 90s it became the most requested song on the radio. They rerecorded it and it was in the top 10 of the record charts again.

The song was brought back to notoriety by the movie Ghost. Listen to their #1 hit “Soul and Inspiration “ also Rock And Roll Heaven from 1974. The greatest duo of all time. Sadly Bobby Hatfield passed away in 2003 and is now up in Rock and Roll Heaven. This was a masterpiece. Thank you for playing it.

As absolutely personal preferences are concerned though, I'm, for sure, drawn to Bill's much deeper, grinding vocals. That said, The Righteous Brothers are/were complete and utter perfection! Their voices complemented each other's, for me, as no other's have! Such soulful lyrics must, and were, perfectly complemented by truly soulful voices, in all their music! 😊

Bobby was a 'counter-tenor, sang 3 to 4 octaves, and live, no autotune, I was 22 when I first saw this, in1965. And I never forgot it. You two should go for more of their incredible music. Love your reaction. I can't close my eyes when Bobby sings because I cant take my eyes of his handsome face or his beautiful blue eyes.

"Ghost" is a must see!! It's a ❤love story❤ not a horror movie. I've watched it over and over. I'm sure it is a movie Amber will love. It's got a humorous streak as well. As everyone is commenting, the song IS the movie! It's heart breaking that we lost Patrick Swayze much too early in 2009. But somehow that makes this movie even more poignant.

There are many things to say about this remarkable performance. One of them is that we're very lucky that it was captured for all time. If you ever get to see the movie ghost you will find this song figures prominently in it. This song will always be special to me because the love of my life and I danced to this song on our honeymoon on a starry night in Negril Jamaica.
I was born in 72, didn't see this until maybe 10 years ago - I was absolutely floored the first time I saw it, couldn't believe I hadn't experienced it.

Many people know Bobby had a bad cold as well as feeling pressure to perform well because his parents were in the audience for the first time. Bill and Bobby often sang solo and each had his special song. Bill's was Brown Eyed Woman, and he often took the lead part in songs in which they both sang. They were spectacular together but each was an incredible talent. They were a one-off, and I don't think we'll ever see their like again.
Bobby Hatfield performed this solo on his own and Bill performed in other performances also. This has been recorded over 700 times and without any doubt THIS IS BOBBY'S PERFECT PERFORMANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 60's was so good because people knew how to sing back then. He just walked out sung it note perfect, no dubbing, no autotune and didn't think he was special because of it.

This is the late, great Bobby Hatfield live on the Andy Williams Show. The other "brother" (they weren't really related) was offstage since this was Bobby's solo. This song was written for the 1955 movie Unchained about a prisoner longing for his love. It has been sung by many before and after Bobby, but his is the definitive version. This live performance is sooo much better than the studio recording, which is great and was a big hit in 1965 and again in 1990 when it was in the movie Ghost. Love your reaction.

So glad you are featuring this wonderful music from the 50's and 60's . I am 75 and this was my music. I still get the chills. It was originally recorded by Al Hibler in the 50's I believe it was in reference to lovers separated by war.
But it is timeless and the Righteous brothers really nailed it. Please keep putting this wonderful music out there for the younger generation to hear and enjoy. Peace ✌️
This was where blue eyed soul was coined, one of the greatest live recordings you will ever hear, Bill and Bobby always did a solo song each, both wanted to do this one and was decided with a coin toss and the rest they say is history
I was going to mention that as well but wanted to make I wasn’t repeating it if someone else said too. But I think we definitely won in that coin toss!!!
For some good oldies motown can I suggest...The Isley Brothers “This Old Heart of Mine” Mary Wells “Two Lovers” Jimmy Ruffin “What Becomes of A Broken Hearted” The Delfonics “La-La Means I Love You” and Barbara Lewis “Baby, I’m Yours”
Rod Stewart and the Isleys did "This Old Heart of Mine" much later and it was magnificent. Such a perfected sound after so many years, and Rod keeping it fresh with his own old heart.

I HAD to play this song at my wedding back in 1997. This song was before my time, but a classic! I lost my husband last December from cancer and this makes me cry!

My late wife dearly loved the beauty and passion of this song. We listened to it often and it always resonated with our own love for each other. I played it for her as she lay dying.

It is a miracle when a song touches a person deeply contributing to who they are. But when when a song touches a couple deeply and contributes in no small part to them loving each other their entire lives I don't think there is a word in the English language because miracle kinda doesn't suffice anymore.
The song is about a man in prison missing his girl and hoping she’ll wait for him. Great song.

The song comes from a 50’s movie “Unchained”.....it was about a guy in prison.....Bill Medley (The other “Brother”) produced this recording by Bobby Hatfield (it was not produced by Phil Spector who tried to take credit for it). Medley played piano on the recording and always said if he knew how big a hit it was going to be he would have hired a better piano player. Bobby’s performance was live on the Andy Williams Show, no auto tuning no sweetening. Bobby’s parents were sitting in the audience and he was really nervous....if you want to hear Bobby and Bill singing together listen to “ You’ve Lost That Lovin Feeling”:or “Soul and Inspiration”....They sang “You’ll Never Walk Alone”;together live on the Ed Sullivan Show which is available on TH-cam and will blow you away!!!

Hey Robert, I heard they flipped a coin as to which one was going to sing it, since it wasn't really a duet type song. Is there truth to that, I've seen it said several times.

But then I've heard SEVERAL times that Bill didn't like the song and didn't want to perform it...geeze! 🤷♀️
@@DianaJG8 Bill tells the story that after Bobby recorded this song he asked the guy mixing it what the hell am I gonna due while Bobby’s on stage singing this? The mixer replied....get on line at the bank. I don’t think Bill would have produced the record if he didn’t like the song.

Bobby Hatfield recorded this song alone. His partner Bill Medley didn't sing it with him. In one of their performances Bill said he didn't think it would be a hit so he didn't sing in it. Fooled him. Epic History which deserves to be praised. Good tunes.

This was Bobby, as many comments state. The of is Bill Medley. He is to baritone what Bobby is to tenor. Amazing. You need to react to “Soul and Inspiration” to hear both of them. The harmonies between two such unique voices are fantastic
