Oil change tip - how to loosen a stuck oil pan drain plug / bolt

  • Here is one way to loosen a stuck oil pain drain plug (bolt) or any other low-mounted, horizontally located nut or bolt.
    For safety, try to stay out from underneath the car during this process, as the upward pressure can cause the car to lift up on its suspension. In general, it's best to be out of harm's way whenever wrenching will cause movement while the car is lifted up on ramps, jack stands, etc.
    Also, always be sure to use wheel chocks if wheels are on the ground to prevent the car from moving.

    Who's this genius?? I spent hours trying different ways to turn the bolt but it won't even budge. The darn dealership super tightened it saying they don't want it to leak because of the thin motor oil. I think they just don't want me to change my motor oil. Now, if you would excuse me, I'm going to bed with my hydraulic jack.

    • @runamuckretreatmccarthy1554
      @runamuckretreatmccarthy1554 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Frazer Brennan , yes you are right. Same thing when they tighten the lug nuts on tires, its like they think they will NEVER EVER EVER EVER have to come off again! Nothing more irritating. At least when working at home you can have a breaker bar or pipe for extra leverage but unless you want to carry one in your car, you're screwed if you have a blow out on the road. I've literally stood and bounced on a lug wrench, and had to do it several times before it let loose... and I'm no featherweight.

    • @zack6892

      Nah it's just dealership mechanics are lazy usually so they use the same impact gun for everything which is usually way to powerful.

    Neither my son nor I could get the oil drain plug to budge on his Honda Accord. We used the longest breaker bar we had, which was 36 inches, and it still would not budge. We did not have a nice car jack like you have. Instead, we used the scissors jack, since that was all we had. It worked like a charm. Thanks for this tip!

    Man, can you believe you are still helping people eight years later? I was in a dilemma just like these other gentlemen, stuck with an oil pan bolt over tightened by some testosterone starved clown with a power tool! As always, I checked TH-cam for a remedy and the gods did not fail me. Thanks to you, I was able to use my scissor Jack to loosen the bolt. Oh what a relief it was to hear that bolt pop. You sir are a genius! Now I can change my own oil with the type I want and not have to spend half a day in someone’s shop. Thanks again!

    Thanks a ton, I thought I tried everything - PB Blaster, a pipe, a giant hammer... nothing worked until this! Just be sure to use a 6-sided socket. I used a 12-sided box wrench and rounded it a bit (just from doing it by hand without the jack). Same story as everyone else: a shop mechanic tightened it with an air wrench.

    Thank you so much for this advice. I tried changing a friend's oil and the plug was torqued on too tight so I couldn't do it and gave up. Then I went to change my wife's oil and it was way too tight as well that my torque wrench wouldn't even get it loose, but this trick here got it off. Thank you so much! @TheVintageSteel, you sir are a god for at least 5 minutes of my life. I almost stripped my drain bolt in frustration. After trying the jack I thought my bolt wrench was broken when I went down to turn it and there was no resistance loosening it. I checked it three times to see if it was turning the right way. Thank you! Worked and saved the day. Literally just as quickly as in the video. Thankfully I had my Jeep on jack stands so the hydrolic Jack was available to use.

    I'm gonna go try this now, I have my car up on ramps because I only use the hydraulic jack for changing tires/brakes, this is f'ing brilliant :)

    I almost took it to a mechanic with a lift. This helped tremendously with a rusted on stuck bolt.
