I had a lug on my old truck that wouldn't break with a 4-way. It wouldn't even break with my pneumatic impact! What *did* break it, eventually, was a 36" breaker bar--but not until my 3/4" socket split in two and I had to switch to the 19mm socket. Glad to be rid of that truck.

My go-to is an ancient Ken Tool cross wrench. When I googled them, they're still in business . My tip: wrap a piece of colored tape around the end (I matched my car's color) that way you don't have to fumble finding the right sized end.
The only time it doesn't work for me is when some idiot at a shop wayyyy over-tightens a lug nut.

The fourway wrench is fine. Of course I always keep a correct one in each vehicle.
They work like a T-handle. Grip firm on each end of the "T", engage your core and square up, loosen the bolt by simply leaning left. If a bolt is stubborn, support the fourway wrench with a jack stand and press with your foot.
When loosened, spin off the rest of the thread like you would with a typical T-handle balance.

Try the correct technique. Put the 4-way on the lug nut so that the cross bar is level or slightly turned clockwise. Grab the ends with each hand, lock the elbows, and shift your body weight to the left. That way you are pulling up on the right and pushing down on the left for twice the torque.
After you jack the vehicle up off the ground and have the room, give the 4-way a good spin and you can spin the nut on or off nearly as fast as an impact.

The best part of the 4-way is how it spins. It makes work fast, and gives you the tactile sensory, where an impact could increase your chances of cross threading and stripping. You normally can oust one side and pull the other and don’t have to worry about camming off the nut. On the really stuck ones you can slip a pipe over the end and get plenty of leverage. And on the side of the road you can stick a jack stand under one side and use your jack to push up on the other to break free tough rusted lugs.

Used to be you could find a 4 way lug wrench in every trunk in the country.

Yea, those are great and I have the correct size for my lugs, and they get each nut off faster by spinning the whole wrench, always use this for an exact purpose.

Once you break the nuts loose or start them back on you spin the like a propeller. Nuts come off and you can partially seat the nut when spinning them on. As long as it's a quality wrench I have no problem using these especially when far from my rollaway or no power for impacts.

That is cool tbf, I have plenty of other tools id use before but that extra leverage and adaptability was cool......

My favorite tire shop used to use them, but now they over tighten everything with dac dacs... the advantage of a 4 way is it usually gets pretty close to torque spec if an average dude just gives it a good grunt. The disadvantage is that not everyone is an average dude working on an average car.

    I call them speed wrenches.
Applying force upwards is the hard way - apply the force downwards to use gravity and body weight. You can also block up the outboard end so the wrench tends to stay on the nut better if you really have to jump on it to break free a nut over-torqued at the tire place.
Years ago this is what they used at race tracks.
There is also a folding version.

The last time I had to deal with a flat, I realized just how crappy the factory stuff is. The next day, I stopped at Hazzard Fraught to pick up a deep well socket stubby extension and a 1/2” breaker bar. That set now lives in the back of the van and will be what I use if I have another flat. The 4-ways are nice for some things, I prefer a breaker bar with the correct socket (it’s just my thing).

I've had the same tool since 1988 and it works 1000% better than the little no leverage tool that comes with your vehicle.
