How Tight was the Drain Plug?

  • Just a quick follow-up to answer a few questions from the Instant Oil Change FAIL video:
    -how tight was the drain plug?
    -was an impact wrench used to tighten the plug?
    -were the welds on the inner nut too weak?
    Since we like to be quantitative on the PHAD channel, let's actually get a number: how hard was the Chrysler drain plug tightened before the inner nut stripped off of the oil pan body?
    Enjoy!

      Yep, first time I did my oil was the morning after Jiffy Lube didn't properly install my oil filter. Most (but not all) the oil was leaked out near the filter because part of the old filter's gasket had ripped off the old filter and was stuck to the block.

    The oil pan on all 3 of my daily driven vehicles are aluminum... I usually break out the actual torque wrench and torque it to the factory specified 13 lb-ft. That sounds ridiculously low, and in fact you can easily turn it further, but I've found 2 major things are at play here: 1) the oil is deceptive, the added lubricity makes the 13 lb-ft more like 25 or even 30 dry. 2) after a couple of heat cycles it seems to tighten up even more, so by the time 5,000 miles have rolled around it's on there good and tight. You can still bust your knuckles breaking the drain plug loose if you're not paying attention.

    A shop I used to work for did a deal with a local Discount Tire. We would replace the wheel studs they break for free (except those that require removal of the hub or more parts expense than just the stud and nut) if they refer all alignments to us. I think we ended up replacing at least one wheel stud a day from them. During winter it would sometimes be several a day. I understand that they're dealing with a lot of wheel studs and lug nuts on a daily basis, but still! Don't even get me started on quick lube places. Last year, I replaced 3 engines and did one timing chain job for a quick lube place (just one location) for their customer's cars that had no oil in them shortly after they did an oil change.

  • @dil6969
    @dil6969 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The FCA drain plugs are so simple to deal with. I've found a couple of plugs finger tight that didn't leak and didn't back off. You just need a gentle tug on the wrench after it bottoms out, as the soft gasket on the plug needs very little torque to create an oil tight seal.

    Break away torque is always more then tightening torque for several reasons...
    #1 It takes less torque to keep a bolt in motion then it does one that is stationary.
    #2 Heat cycles warp the metal overtime and cause binding.
    The other fault:
    Re-using crush gaskets can damage threads as gaskets can only be deformed so many times before they no longer "Crush".
    Replace your damn bolts and crush gaskets on parts of the car that go through that stress... NEVER REUSE OLD GASKETS and replace the bolt when needed.

    My last trip to a quick change shop was to Jiffy Lube, which provided their "Signature Service" to my car. It was a Mazda MX-6 with a manual transaxle. They changed the oil and filter and as I was about to pay they ran down their list of items they supposedly checked and offered suggested services based on car mileage and age. Sounds good so far, right? They rattled off about ten things that were fine then said they checked the transaxle fluid level and it was good. I suspected they hadn't checked this, so I asked them how they did that. Oh, there is a dipstick in the engine compartment. No, there is not... Oh, Mr. Raasch, we know your car, there is a dipstick in the engine compartment. No, there is not... Ah, there is a plug in the side of the transaxle, we take that out to check the oil level. No, there is not. At this point we went out to the car which was still in the bay and the tech was under the car. The sales clerk asked the tech if he checked the transaxle oil level. Yes. How? Dipstick in engine compartment. No... Plug in side of transaxle. No. As I stumped both of these liars, they asked, so how DO you check it? You remove the speedometer cable and check for the level on the plastic gear. It is simple to do, but I highly suspected did it. What good is a signature when the people filling out the form are liars? Last time ever to Jiffy Lube.

    Had a sump plug that tight once, and it also loosened the pressed in nut, but when I put a new plug in, it came back, because of a leak. The steel around the sump plug was cracked to about 3 inches out like a spider web, pretty sure it had been done up with an impact gun originallying, maybe more than once, but I ended up wearing the cost of a second hand sump plus labor etc

    I see you really get into your work. I bought car that had been to K-Mart for an oil change and the drain plug fell out as the owner drove it home. The engine was toast. I bought a wrecked car with the same engine and made a good profit when I sold the car. The mechanic that made that expensive mistake (K-Mart did pay) probably has been overcompensating ever since and working at Valvoline.

  • @johnr8476

    I have found that they will lose, or fail to put the sealing washer back on the drain plug. so when put it back in, it may only be tighten to 20 or 30 ft. lbs., but now you have the steel flange on the plug tightened against the steel pan creating a lot of friction, so it may take 80 or 90 lb, of torque to remove.

    I realize this is an older post, but it reminded me of a car I had years ago. I had picked up a 86 Mustang and the last oil change before I got it was done at at Valvoline quick lube. I had to destroy the drain plug with a hammer and chisel to get it out, and I had to do the screwdriver threw the filter method to get the filter off because of how tight it was. Pretty sure they used an impact on both.

    Take an excessively greedy huge corporation, add under trained and under paid employees who hate their employer, and you end up with lots of cars being harmed when customers just want a simple proper oil change. The Internet is full of well documented examples of quick lube places harming vehicles, not performing the services they charge for, up selling and performing unneeded and sometime harmful services (like "motor flushes"), and generally proving they can't be trusted to service a lawnmower let alone a valuable car. Thanks for providing another example.

      This is extremely common, even at car dealers. Idiots over torquing not only the drain plug but wheel nuts and pretty much every thing else. I bet if one is relatively strong, it would not leak if you just finger tightened it.

    • @Zalagar619
      @Zalagar619 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've left one finger tight by accident once and it came back dry, but Ford's also have rubber o rings on their plugs. But I dont work at a quick lube place and I definitely don't over torque the drain plugs. It's very annoying having to replace them after we get one from a quick lube place. I work at a Ford Dealership, and always have to deal with the tire shops and other places over torquing the lugnuts and destroying the caps also as well as the threads on the drain plugs. I had a car come in with the drain plug so tight i had to use a long breaker bar to break torque, Most of the time it's from Valvoline or Jiffy Lube.

    I know a guy who got a temporary job at one of those "Quick Lube" places. They had a huge turnaround. Most employees had very little clue about what they were doing but the job did not pay much either. One day a lady customer came back screaming that her new car was missing a radio. One of the new employees simply stole the radio while he was changing oil in her car. We can only guess what he was thinking, IF he was thinking at all! The thief acted very surprised that the lady noticed the radio missing! LOL. Obviously he got fired. LOL.
    This is why I would never let anyone change oil in any of my vehicles. Same with any repairs, unless it's a major warranty repair.

    At 21 yo I stoped trusting majority of mechanics and auto repair shops.
    I'm 68 yo now.
    Yrs I have been to good shops with good honest mechanics, few and far in between.
    The last shop ended up Replaceing 2 of their automatic transmissions, ( under warrenteed). They did both for free. They were honest. Fired 2 installers and a rebuilder.
    But after last one I had starter issues, turned out 2 bolts from flax plate to torque converter came loose and fell out.
    The whole issue left my truck out of commission for months.
    Part of problem was China flu shut down and supply chain shortages.
    Even dealerships have "certified tech" issues.
    Till the day I strip driveing I will change my own oil, tune ups, replace small component parts.

    Jesus Christmas! I hate those instant lube places. I checked my 1999 Ford E-150 in for an oil change. I was having some health problems and really wasn't feeling up to getting into the van. The sky behind the counter was telling me they're all certified mechanics! Bravo! Then he opens the door and yells out into the bay to the guy working on my van is that E150 front wheel drive or rear wheel drive. Seriously you're a Certified mechanic and you don't know the answer to that one?!? I specifically told the butt munch that I only wanted the oil change I did not want them touching anything else on the van. The next day my power steering was low, the AC was suddenly a pound or so low on R134, and suddenly my differential was low on oil I could hear it. Coincidence? I think not. If I go to burn the place down I would have. Yeah this really happened. Corner of Gandy Boulevard and Manhattan Avenue in Tampa Florida. Don't use a place to change the oil on your lawn mower.

    It's too early for me to find the humor in it, but sure I will sooner or later. It's crazy that I been walking around like I'm the shit because I changed 3 engine / trans mounts and an axle, but because of a drain plug kicking my ass, cant change my oil😂

    It is the drain plug design, the rubber seal sticks to the oil pan pretty good when cold.

    I read some where that aluminum pans are suppose to be 20 to 25 ft/lb of torque. Steel pans require to 25 to 30 ft pounds. I just like to go a little over snug. Or a little over spec. I only trust needle torque wrenches. But they only come in real big sizes. And it's not a good idea to use something big to tighten a oil drain plug. You wont have much space. You will hit something if the car isn't really high off the ground. Another rule of thumb is just don't use excessive force. Remember, snug, snug. And you can turn it a little more after a snug. And just keep an eye on it from time to time to see if it's leaking. I actually worried that I over tighten it once, but I didn't.

    I'm surprised the oilpan nut wasn't sheared off its brazed joint with the pan. If that has been a Honda with a soft crush washer, that much torque would have split and forced the washer out from under the bolthead, stripped the thread and let the bolt spin free..

    I always use my torque wrench on sump plugs and motorcycle oil filters it dose not take much longer to do the job properly, I have mentioned this before on TH-cam and coped it from trolls but if I do a job I go the extra mile, if you down load a oil lubrication chart with torque specs you will soon find out different manufacturers will have different specs so why not take advantage of this easy to find knowledge and do it rite have pride in your work, that way people will take pride of you simple.

    I am always careful of oil pans. Some aluminum ones only require like 10ft/lb of torque. Some 22 or a little more. On aluminum you have to be more careful than steel. Never use an impact gun!!. I had an instance where I used a small 3/8" ratchet one time to change my oil, and next time taking the plug out it was pretty much finger tight to loosen it. I used a larger fiber gasket 14mm on 12mm plug. On steel I just use a small 1/2" wrench and aluminum washer, tighten it till its a little past snug since the washer deforms. I find sometimes these click drive torque wrench dont click at lower settings, and dont want to risk damaging my threads.

    • @deegee2416
      @deegee2416 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that's under torquing it a little with 10, no wonder why it was loose when you took it off. I kind of thought I over tighten my drain plug too much. But when I checked on it. And I broke it free, I realized that I tighten it a lot less than the oil shop. For the heck of it, it was a pain, but I used one of those needle torque wrenches. *Not really a good idea because it's big and there isn't much space. But I torqued the plug near 30ft to 40 ft. Near 40 ft pounds. I will be testing it out to see if it does loosen. The reality is, just get it snug. Then once it's snug, you can get it a tad little more. And yes those click type torque wrenches didn't click once for me as well at a low setting. I thought something was wrong, and I kept going and snap. I really should of practiced it on another bolt before I used it.
      I read some where that aluminum pans are suppose to be 20 to 25 ft/lb of torque. Steel pans require to 25 to 30 ft pounds. I guess you aren't far off. I just like to go a little over snug. Or a little over spec.

    You couldn't find the welds? Maybe the nut was just glued into place, evidently the glue didn't stand up. Of course it's hard to estimate what force was applied but less than 70 ft lbs sounds like a good guess. Sure, that was too much, but I think you have found evidence the pan was defective or at least inadequately manufactured. It makes one wonder how often that happens, and whether the company quietly replaces pans when this happens at the dealer. The drain nut on my Subaru tends to leak, and it's a little frustrating knowing that new pans are made so poorly compared to the heavy designs of the past. Old style drain plugs could tolerate 70 foot pounds every day, even though nobody was applying that much force. Good engineering should design the easily replaced part (the bolt) to fail first, so you would have more of a chance to replace it without having to take the pan off.

    I purchased a car off an auction and the drain plug was warped, the head of the bolt was warped by an impact wrench. I put 100 or more pounds on it and it wouldn't come out, then my wrench started slipping a lot so i had to use an impact wrench to undo it.

    You're telling me two shops couldn't figure out how to put 70 lb-ft on a drain plug to remove it? Did it spin before that? If so, that answers my question.

    • @Embermist69

      Late to the party, but the nut on the inside was spinning so no amount of torque would help. Needed to hold one side while removing the other.

    I will never go back to any Valvoline oil change place at any locations. They strip oil plug on my 2016 Huyandi Santa Fe Sport and on my 2009 Chevy Silverado they over tighten oil plug and oil filter. Oil filter had use extreme measure get it off and lucky oil plug on Silverado wasn't strip had use a breaker bar. Going back do my own oil changes.

    That oil change guy must have a cousin who works in Michigan! I just changed the oil in my daughters Toyota last week and when I couldn't loosen the plug with a standard box wrench I grabbed what was handy for more Oomff, my torque wrench. It turns out that this plug was tightened to 60 ft lbs. So tight that the plastic washer used on Toyotas was crushed and actually "extuded" around the outside of the drain plug flange! This was done at a Toyota STEALERSHIP! I hate doing oil changes but who needs the hassle of arguing or a law suit to recover the damages? I would never want to go 10K miles without changing the oil especially on a vehicle that has VVT.

      Just want to set the record straight. On Toyota drainplugs. Once you pull the 14mm bolt out, the washer 99% of the time stays on the pan so people don’t loose them. And it’s not a form of over torque. It even happens when you torque it to the correct specs (usually 25-27ftlbs). Don’t try to talk crap unless you know what your talking about.
