      Not really. Perhaps in that example but your mileage may vary. Just snug it up, check for leaks (with engine running) and check it again the next day.. Tighten a little more if needed when engine has cooled down. Cause more tighter ain't more better. Kudos for doing your own oil changes. I just did the 40th one on my 2006 Toyota Matrix.

    Your best investment for your dyi garage is a torque wrench. If the manual states 37 NM of torque, for example, you torque that. No more, no less.
    And 37 NM is not allot of torque, I was impressed that my torque wrench clicked that fast the first time I used it, so over tightning those screws is really easy

    I retired from Boeing with over 35 years as an aircraft maintainer.
    Please do not be misled; installing a bolt with the proper torque is important for various reasons:
    • If you over torque you risk damaging the threads; either immediately or over a prolonged period of repeated over torquing.
    • If you under torque you risk that the bolt will loosen over time, with vibration and/or expansion and compression of applied pressures.
    • These failures can be expensive, and time consuming especially when the item with the receiving threaded hole hard to replace, or difficult to get to.
    You will often hear seasoned automotive mechanics brag about how they have the feel for the proper torque without a torque wrench. However, I guarantee you that if the bolt could be tested; they would not be within tolerance. I have heard plenty of horror stories about people struggling to remove over tightened bolts. Many times these bolts are mistaken for cross threaded bolts. More than likely the threads were galled due to over torquing. The mechanic, who says he’s been doing it for ages, has more than likely never been the one to have to remove his hacked up work.
    Continual gradual over-torquing can cause the threads to deform to the point that they become galled at some point in the future, or just fail to hold.
    Cheap DIY torque wrenches are OK, but have a sloppy tolerance as to their true torque value. Generally, good manuals give you a torque range. Ex: 28.9 - 32.5 lb-ft. Use the midpoint value (31 lb-ft optimum) to help compensate for the tolerance of the torque wrench.
    Torque specs are very important to the longevity, and proper functionality of items being joined. It is why Boeing pays good money to inspectors who are supposed to assure that the maintainer uses the proper torque.
    Torque specs are not just dependant on the material type, material length, diameter, and thread size of a bolt. Torque specs are also reliant on the same criteria for the material that the bolt is to be mounted to, including the depth. In addition, torque specs are also dependent on the material that is going to be sandwiched between the two.
    Ex: The oil drain plug for a 2009 Hyundai Elantra 2.0L DOHC is a M14-1.5, and has a torque spec of 28.9 - 32.5 lb-ft (31 lb-ft optimum).
    The oil drain plug for a 2011 Ford E350 super Duty XL, 5.4L is also a M14-1.5, but only has a torque spec of 17 lb-ft.
    The biggest visible difference being that the latter comes with a rubber “O” ring gasket; while the Elantra has a soft metal crush gasket.
    Now, if I were to have tighten the E350’s drain plug to the standards that some knuckle draggers suggest; I would have shortened the useful life of that “O” ring, and possibly even damaged the bolt, or threads on the oil pan (depending on the materials they might be made from).
    Personally, I got tired of the inconsistencies in advice from different people and sites, so I signed up for a long term access to maintenance data for both of my vehicles, at ALLDATA DIY.COM. While not as in-depth and user friendly as professional service manuals I used to have for previous vehicles; ALLDATA is still accurate, and a lot better than the grape vine. Professional manuals used to cost me anywhere from $120.00 to $250.00. Chump change compared to the savings of doing maintenance myself.

    • @zxKrookedxz
      @zxKrookedxz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      its because they have a thing called a "lube audit" where essentially someone comes and torque checks the drain plug randomly and instead of the techs torquing the bolts they just tighten the shit outta them with a wrench because a torque wrench wont tell you if something is overtorqued

  • @AB-jz9ns
    @AB-jz9ns 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Everyone should pay particular attention to what he said about not to use too long of a wrench. Don’t ask how I know… If you use a longer wrench you can over tighten without realizing it since you use less force to achieve same torque.

    I saw ruined oil pans quite often when I worked at Valvoline. most common drainplugs to be over tightened were on Hondas. I had to install quite a bit of pan savers. I've also seen a few overtightened 12 x 1.25 plugs, and the boss would put an oversized M14 x 1.5 plug in which puts tons of metal shavings into the oil pan, and there's no guarantee that half assed job of rethreading is going to last. Now I'm working for an oil change and tire shop for a dealership where they got workers doing things right.

    • @silvermediastudio
      @silvermediastudio 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I go finger tight. Snug with socket wrench. Then muscle it about 1/8th turn. You feel the threads engaging and the resistance ramps up, that's all it takes. Wipe the area down with a rag and move on. Give it a peak after filling and running the car for a minute to check for leaks. If yours has a lock washer, best to replace it. I think most modern cars use a flat rubber gasket now that's reusable.

    I used a tortorque wrench on my 2018 Tacoma, spec is 30ftlbs. Question is if I used a Chinese wrench and set it to 40 instead of 30ftlbs, what's the odds of it being damaged? I removed and looked to see but oil all over threads. The bolt looked fine and the threads where still there but long term damage is what I'm concerned about.

      the problem with cheap torque wrench is unreliable, which means the real torque could be higher or lower than indicated. Get a good torque wrench and take care of it, gonna be good for life.
