You think the next HP Lovecraft month will include that weird CGI animated movie series, Howard Lovecraft? A series about his work, made for kids, and us about Lovecraft as a child? And stars Doug Bradley and Mark Hamill? Yep. This is a thing.

Gargoyles and Frankenstine's Monster, two of my favorite things ever. How could they make something so fsking bad? I'm glad I never got around to seeing this pile of rubble while it was in theaters.
It's a shame they didn't actually pull anything from gargoyle mythology, which is heavily tied up in the history of christian art. During the French Gothic period we saw a focus on creating incredable spires and dramatic flying butressess in gorgeous cathedrals made in the name of worship. To make such structures work they required large water spouts and other support features, so there was a surge in creating fancy grotesques, sculptures of fearsome creatures meant to turn away harm while hiding various building elements, with specialized grotesques used to decorate functional downspouts known as gargoyles.... strangely it is the term gargoyle that has persisted in English to refer to all grotesques. Prior to the French Gothic period, Jesus was depicted with heavy stylization which made him seem completely otherworldly, and focused on showing him as a king and judge - imagery popularized by the Byzantine era, a Jesus who would never tolerate a gargoyle. With the French Gothic period there was a shift toward depicting Jesus in a more realistic form, highlighting his aspects of kindness and forgiveness, depicting his fatherly love toward creation, even extending forgiveness to demons who realized the wrongness of their actions and desired to repent for their sins. Gargoyles are these repentant demons who are accepted by Jesus, allowing them to shelter on hallowed grounds, serving penance by protecting those within the church. Gargoyles are proof of the unlimited potential of love and redemption, that all people can find peace in god, no matter the circumstances of their birth or life, but from a desire to do good. It's a shame that all this demon redemption never made it into any of the cannon (and the sentiments they represent are so often forgotten).

I enjoyed your review. I remember seeing this in the theater thinking it would be funny bad. It was just tediously bad.
I'm surprised you didn't mention how poor the makeup design is for Adam. He actually mentions at one point that he is made up of parts of several different people sewn together. But he sure doesn't look like it. The filmmakers clearly wanted a "sexy Frankenstein's Monster" for the teen audience.

    • @jenniferloving9054

    • @konstance13
      @konstance13 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I always thought that would be a cooler way to go about portraying the monster. Give him mismatches skintones, parts that look more wrinkled or decayed, maybe have one arm a little longer the other, shit give him different colored eyes. Something besides stylized scars to show that he's made of multiple corpses.

Alright, to be... kind of fair about why Gargoyles.
Gargoyles, from what I've read, were designed to be sort of like imposing guardians for the buildings they perched on. Sort of like a Bad Luck Ward, with the use of a fearsome creature... It's like getting cerberus as a guard dog. He's gonna be a good dog, sure, but you'll see a three-headed dog from hell and you're gonna run screaming the other way.

Perhaps Kevin Grevioux read the children's book God Bless the Gargoyles by Dav Pilkey (yes the author of Captain Underpants,) as a loose inspiration for his gargoyles. It's actually a great book and worth the few minutes to read. Yes, Mr Pilkey makes the same mistake about the definition of Gargoyle, but, and maybe I'm just a big softy, this picture book summoned the onion ninjas.

If the big reveal in Van Helsing wasn't that he was the archangel Gabriel the whole time, (and we didn't all know it and compare to it) I feel like it would have been an interesting setup and payed off a twist that the reason "Adam" is special and this reanimated corpse without a soul and no one else can do it, is because he IS *Michael* or he contains the essence/soul of Michael. He's still a selfish prick but he didn't remember who he was, and that maybe he tried to pull a Jesus and be human but it didn't work out so well and he doesn't remember anything anyway.
It would explain why he can't be possessed, why he's practically indestructible, why he can just get a piece of metal and stab a demon with it because HIS BODY is basically a consecrated weapon, and maybe integrate science more into it, that Frankenstein's developments and discoveries and experiments were just too freaking good/close that it caught the eye of the divine.
That is, IF THAT WAS THE TWIST, it would just be a complete ripoff of Van Helsing nowadays.

Trying to figure out if the thing beside him is a fantasy halberd or post modern lighting appliance.
    Or .... a fantasy halberd hanging from a wall-mounted cloth-iron...

Deusdaecon Reviews I enjoy listening to your reviews. They remind me of Mauler’s movie reviews before he just started doing EFAP multihour discussions (less editing, writing, etc involved I would imagine), although he picks them apart with a thorough examination with some help from his viewers (you will never catch everything).
I first found your channel after finished watching Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. It was terrible. So I then proceeded to look for reviews of it either to explore the problems I had with the movie (with possible answers to them).
Like the battle outside of the Whitehouse. Either they never intended on doing it (cost would likely be significant), or maybe called it off after getting cost quotes.

I guess someone really wanted a Frakenstein's monster fighting other monster's flick. If they kept the concept of Gargoyles and Daemon's having this war thing, and worked with that, it could've been a jolly good plot. The whole mainframe of Frakenstein's monster, Adam drama, romance, and what not; that all really dragged on the film. And for once can we have two characters, I don't care about their genders, but how 'bout these characters that coexist without slipping into a romantic relationship? I get sex sells, but tossing that plot into the movie and making it a hard focus for the audience is time consuming too. Fans are perfectly capable of shipping characters, and then don't forget, the thirst to make that cannon. Just thoughts.

I remember this movie...didnt think it was terrible..but didnt think it wqas good either.
Instead I wish they would have given the big screen production deal to Dean Koontz Frankenstein. it is a MUCH MUCH better story.
It was made into a tv movie and wasnt bad but..too limited to tell the story fully.
that would have been a great movie.

Wait a sec... if the 2 weapons the Monster chose were to massive and unwieldy, why did somebody even bother making them into daemon killing weapons?. Are Gargoyles like dogs, they bring home any old bits of crap they find and just make it into a daemon weapon. Is there just a load of sticks and leaves with symbols on them as well as they just brought them home on impulse?

Also Nibirius' death is even more stupid than one would at first think, as Adam carved the symbol into his torso WRONG. The horizontal lines of the cross are the wrong lengths when you see the finished cross glowing.
