Two fun facts-one is years ago I worked with a woman who lived around the corner from the Defeos. She knew Ronnie well. She said the combination of his mental instability and copious consumption of drugs is what did him in. And second fun fact, DeFeo recently died at Albany Medical Center, which is my local hospital...

Fun fact, in Japan it is mandatory for realtors to inform prospective buyers not just about homicides but sucides or even death after prolonged sickness. It is not uncommon for properties where suicide- that is much, much more common in Japan than homicide; all too common, in fact- has taken place to go vacant for months on end as even slashing the rent does not convince people to take their chances.
There is a minority who will search the news for suicide cases when looking for the ideal, low rent home that they can grab for peanuts as no-one else will have them. Which is very smart.
It is indeed very smart, is there a specific reason why many people strongly avoid such properties? Like, they believe they could be haunted? They think living in a place where a homicide/suicide has taken place means bad luck? Or it just makes them uncomfortable to live where someone died in a tragic way
I've seen The Grudge. I ain't messing with that crap.
In many places here in my city, it would be impossible to find an apartment where no one ever died, since many have been built in 1930 to 1933 and the ones owned by the city, are often the only ones with stable and affordable rents for a low to mid income households, singles or single parents...
So someone with that Japanese ( not wanting to sound racist, just my impression based on the original comment about these properties being hard to re- sell / rent) / superstitious mindset
would be screwed trying to find a home if it wasn't both parents working full time in well paying jobs....

In Pennsylvania, USA homicides, suicides, etc. are specifically excluded from a need to disclose before a real estate sale.
You are one hell of a nerd! I mean that as a compliment. Listening to your videos is amazing. You are talking about the films, sure, but it's at the same time a great piece of History and you have knowledge that goes far beyond just the movies. This movie clearly wanted to be the "new" Poltergeist...minus any of the charm, warmth, creativity, or vision.
This movie is still 50 times better than the god awful poltergeist remake 😂

1990s Night of the Living Dead is the best horror remake. Romero wrote the new script with Tom Savini directing. The characters are more fleshed out and the zombies look great.
Of course, all of this could probably have been avoided if they just had a carbon monoxide detector :)
One of my first thoughts was that some of the non supernatural stuff (headaches, feeling of unease, sickness, mild hallucinations, etc) are all the sort of stuff you get from a gas leak or carbon monoxide in old houses. I know someone who had some of that happen to them and a few previous owners had similar symptoms and it turned out that when a previous homeowner had removed a fireplace the idiot DIY'er didn't plug the hole in the chimney and just dry walled over it. He evidently didn't realize the oil (later gas) furnace vented its exhaust into the same chimney that the main floor and upper floor fireplace used, so the carbon monoxide/dioxide was leeching out of the hole into the walls and gassing half the house.
@@arthas640 or a high natural background radiation that does happen certain places. It'll give similar symptoms. And it could be a nice explanation for potentially creepy stuff, because hallucinations, sickness, paranoia, etc. could literally be caused by it.
@@kinagrill I think the same can happen with the radioactive gas Radon, which can leach into some homes and occurs naturally in many places. I've heard it can be responsible for the increased background radiation levels in some places, especially in areas with old mines.

@@arthas640Carbon monoxide, radon, infrasound etc. are all common and very likely explanations for hauntings, especially in old houses that were built at a time people didn't know about these forms of environmental pollutions.
No need for ghosts when you aren't breathing enough oxygen or the acoustics in an old house are creating low enough frequencies to make you feel queasy.
i just noticed, when they found the girl in the boat house she was holding a red balloon. Maybe IT turned up for a cameo :)

Full disclosure. I'm annoyingly enamoured with the shining (my second favorite horror film). But it has to be said, how many times do they plan to rip off that film here? Numbered days, kid sees invisible person but he's not "assposed to" tell his mom too much about it. Character development at breakfast table with some creepy incest undertones. "Sure, I'll live here it's amazing, wait what's that little detail--familicide by husband? No biggie." Sex gets interrupted by creepy visions. I'm only 6 min in and I bet a lot more is coming.

Ryan Reynolds is shirtless for literally a quarter of his screen time in this movie.
@Deusdaecon actually that red room was a real edition to the amityville house but it was originally created by ronald defeo senior as a toy room for the kids, it was only later when the lutz family moved in that the room was made into something apparently horrifying.
I have a soft spot for this movie, it has some amazing imagery even if it does 'Hollywood scares' a bit too often. Ryan Reynolds sells it beautifully and the best part is that it barely references The Shining, which would have been the most blatantly obvious thing to do.

I'd watch that movie all day every day.
And one of the Lutz boys also debunked his parents’ story saying they lied about it. Those who have lived in the house since then is even more credible and have had no supernatural happenings.
This film definitely wasn't as bad as I expected it was going to be. I ended up not disliking after watching it. Don't think I would ever sit through it again though.

Real late to the party, love the channel btw. But in response to what was said about adding Jodi, I feel that was done as a way to not disrespect the actual children that were killed by using their names for a ghost character. You can disrespect the murderer all you want and use his name cause fuck him but I think adding a fictional ghost was a good way to not drag the kids names through the mud by attaching them to grotesque spirits in the capacity we see of Jodi

ryan reynolds in a horror movie just seems so strange that i kind of love it. ends up raising the creep factor of everything.
I always took it that Jodie wasn't on the same page as the others. She wanted the little girl to join her as a friend because she was lonely. The other ghosts or whatever are trying to drive ryan Reynolds to murder his family & repeat the cycle. I don't think the ghost motivations are hard to follow.

This movie is a rollercoaster, one of my preferred films.
I mean the main issue with this film and others is that so many of the scares are obvious for film stuff as non of it makes any sense.
I mean the girl with the finger bit... I can't help but think what was going through her mind... "Meh fuck it this girl looked after me but I'll just be disgusting with her cos I've apparently gone insane while being dead"
If I recall, was this recently debunked as a fake haunting? The family setup the whole thing using the murder house to add weight to the story.
Ir's been disputed for decades but no, there has never been true confirmation of the hoax.
hmm interesting, maybe I am getting my wires crossed. If you are ever short on video ideas, looking into the truth behind these type of movie hauntings would be pretty fun.
If you read into the Amityville Horror research, there's one interesting fact where William Weber (DeFeo's defense attorney), in a 1979 _People_ magazine interview, claimed that he, the Lutz's and Jay Anson had "created this horror story over a many of wine".
it's not a confirmed hoax but that in large part is that there is no evidence what so ever of anything that had gone on supernaturally in that house. Even from various Ghost investigation groups so all they have is a story and while that's all they have it's just one big "he said, she said" situation.
However the Lutz' did make money off of the story in various forms. When the remake came out I was of the opinion that it was being sued against more because certain people involved in the original stuff weren't making money off of it like they had the original and some of the books and such.
I like to think some parts of the haunting were faked.
Interestingly enough, in the state of NY it is illegal to not mention that a houses is haunted when selling it. Stambovsky v. Ackley 1991 Which the NY supreme court ruled "Seller who had undertaken to inform the public at large about the existence of poltergeists on the premises to be sold was estopped to deny existence of poltergeists on the premises, so the house was haunted as a matter of law and seller must inform the purchaser of the haunting." 😊😁
I don't get why in movies, especially horror,when they show people with these huge houses but yet showing the kids have to share. This house had an attic turned into a bedroom,so there's only 2 in that big house? I doubt that.not like parents have an office,his is the basement.ugh
From what I remember (been a while since making this video) the sleeping arrangements are accurate to life, so its not really part of any kind of movie trope

In regards to the blood in the original, the only thing I can think off is the kids fingers in the falling window? But that was next to nothing really. Yep like you I didn't go on this film and like you the scene of the kid in the bathroom got me.
This is honestly a pretty solid movie. The performances are pretty solid. Melissa George and Ryan Reynolds both elevate the film far above the average one it could have been.

the only similarity I can see is the fingering of open wounds, but if you can see jesus in that more power to you, personally i just see over the top shock value gore, also if it was a reference to the bible I'm not sure what the point of it would be except to say "we know bible stories aren't we clever"

Didn't Ronald DeFeo claim he heard voices telling him to kill his family? I'm not implying that I think it's supernatural, but they still left that part in. Or is it the part with the haunted TV that got you?
DeFeo only claimed he heard voices after his incarceration and the writer of the book had already spoken to his lawyer.
Troin also there is a rumour that one of the sisters helped kill the family before finally she was killed. Reason was for the killings was the dad was very abusive and the mom did nothing to stop it

@@thunderchild1083 I never got the chance to come back and say this, but you were right. The original is way more psychological, unnerving, and has way better, more subtle scares.
I think this movie is actively trying to make people more stupid and yes your aboslutely right it takes a special kind of crazy to add another victim to an already gruesome crime just because in a movie.

I remember mom making me watch the original when I was a little kid along with a lot of other old horror movies - would love to request a review of at least one of the movies that my mom insisted on traumatizing young me with. I'll agree that it's totally nonsensical, and it was only written to provide scares and tension, not make sense, BUT.... What if Jody's ghost is trying to kill Chelsea in order to save her from George killing her and maybe disrupting the plans of the demon that killed her own family?
I mean I guess but there is zero indication or insinuation of that being the case and im not in the business of doing a writers job for them to excuse bad writing.

the remake of 28 days later is severely disappointing.
I mean, why get pissed off that they added a little girl, when this entire franchise is probably based on lies (except for the original 6 DeFeo murders). There's a lot of conflicting reports and stories about what happened, as there usually is with "Hauntings".

@@deusdeaconReviews I have seen this snore fest of a movie once, and I can't remember seeing Jodi from the side of from behind. Funny how this movie remind me of 2 murders in England in the 60s-70s, so a married couple moved into a house from WW2 and 3 months later the wife was killed by her husband. About a year later another couple moved into that same house only for the same thing to happen again. The weird thing is that both women was distant descendants of the 2 women that lived in the house until there untimely deaths and the weirder thing is that both of the husbands was second or third cousins and both of them died from heart attacks in jail.

Such a missed opportunity. Reynolds was perfectly cast, and they had an opportunity to be truer to what allegedly happened. That’s the way they advertised it too. Instead, they chose to take all the embellishments of the original movie and double down on them. You can always tell they’re straining for credibility when they say THE true story instead of A. Lee Daniel’s The Butler is also a huge offender.

This stupid 'spooky shit' in most movies nowadays with no damn vagueness to it or subtlety. Just a ton of 'wuuuuuu wuuuuu spooky spooky!' handwaving into your face.
If you wanna make an old movie reel creepy... how about trying something like the movie having messed up moments that distorts the visuals... and when you replay it, they won't appear again or appear at other places, etc. It's less 'spooky deathface' and just feels better and more eerie.

This one isn’t that bad. It’s just that casting Ryan Reynolds in a horror movie was their biggest drawback.
