I feel like a lot of these big box stores have regular potting soil not necessarily the proper soil. Adding pumice and worm castings is a good idea. My rule of thumb is if the soil stays super wet for 5 or more days that’s a sign that it’s too dense and holds too much water

Yup ! My peacock plant wasn’t doing well . It was in a 6 inch pot with not a lot of roots around the pot for a 6 inch pot .. I kept 4 good leaves 🍃 and most of the roots and put it in a 4 inch pot .. I hope it Survives

The plants are in media that suits the plant in grow houses. I have moved all of my plants from costa farm's cocopeat and I think that may have been a mistake. Their cocopeat is always soft and fluffy so next time I purchase a plant, I think I will amend the soil as you suggested since cocopeat has no nourishment and put the plant back in it to see how it does. I have lost so many plants due to repotting so I am going to learn to leave some of these plants alone.

My moonlight is finally growing fantastic. It took a few months to get going. The new growth first unfurled crappy but is acclimated and trailing now, putting out perfect, large, healthy, leaves. I let them dry out completely. I wait until the leaves curl under a bit before watering. I use an airy soil mix, I let it dry out completely, my house is 40-50% humidity, it’s in a terra-cotta pot AND I have it a few feet away from a window that gets a lot of morning sun, I find the leaves get a weird yellow hue if it gets to much direct sun. Those are my tips.

Thank you for your video! I've been trying to find a video specifically about the soil I'm finding in these plants and many others I've bought from big box stores. They all are using coco coir type soil and it seems to not have good drainage so I've been contimplating repotting. Please give an update on how yours is doing, if it's grown. Also thanks for comparing soil! Super helpful video

Excellent video. Most people “talk” about root rot, but you SHOWED the rot, visually identified the rotted roots AND gave a tip on how to manage it after you find them. So very well done, thank you so much. I also appreciate the visual on the soil it came in in comparison to the soil your going to use and why you chose that soil. Microphone works great. I heard everything you said clearly.

Enjoyed this repotting video very much! You and your husband are the best team ever! I picked up mine at Walmart about 6 weeks ago. She has been growing and has 4 new leaves that should be unfurling soon. After watching your video I took a closer look at the soil. I think it is possibly holding on to moisture a little bit too long. I paid roughly $16.00 for her and it is a full pot. She’s lovely and I adore her. She sits about four feet from a floor to ceiling window and she gets light from the East. I think your video has saved her from some struggles down the road. 😊. Many thanks and happy growing from Charlotte, NC! 👏🌿🥰💚

Some of the Costa Farms plants are planted in cocoa coir only. I'm sure that it is soaked well before shipping, but then it dries out ,and when you water them the water flows right thru and your plant will remain in dry coir. I check all my plants now.

I love your energy! I wouldn’t have thought twice if your video hadn’t popped up, so thank you. I usually pop a couple (don’t laugh) tampons into the soil of any new plants when I bring them home from a big box store. It helps dry them out quicker and acclimate to not being overwatered, lol

First time viewer and thank you for a great video. I ordered a rooted cutting off Etsy, received it the week of July 4th. I had watched countless videos and googled info about this plant and its care. My take away was to treat it more like a succulent, and you’ll have better success. So I got an orchid pot, I planted the cutting in a cactus/bark/perlite mix and that sets in a terra cotta cache pot (no drainage hole). She has dried up 2 or 3 times and I’ve soaked her and let her dry out again. I’ve had her for 5 weeks today and have 3 new leaves. Since it’s August, I’m able to use rain water and haven’t given her any fertilizer yet. I have her on my 3 season, north side of the house porch. She gets Morning dappled sun and seems to be living her best life.
One problem I’ve had in the past is the bottom of the pot gets so water logged. I’ve switched my soil components since then to include even a little bit more perlite to the bottom inch of soil than the rest of the pot, it seems to help. The second thing is, I’m switching to the clear/white-ish pots and some netted pots (orchids) to help with air flow on sansevierias and other plants that want to dry out.
Maybe there’s an update video on your beautiful moonlight that I haven’t come across yet?

Thanks for sharing these tips! I will do a houseplant tour soon where I can show it. It’s been a slow grower in my experience. It’s a great idea to put her outside in my porch when it’s good weather, the plants I have done that to grow so much faster. 💚

Don't try potting soil. Try coco coir, orchid bark chips, warm castings?perlite, and charcoal pieces or pumice . And she should do well. Try hanging in a west facing window or table. It may need sunlight or nutrients

You always are so blessed w/finding the best rare plants, I'm so jealous, no really I'm happy for you. I haven't been as blessed so far finding many rare plants where I live at the moment so, no Moonlight Treubii for me, yet but I totally understand your buying four of them. I def would have done the same as I also love giving plants away to my friends and sometimes I just like to pot two or three plants together to make it nice and lush and full if they're small plants to begin with. I enjoy potting vids so, thanks for sharing yours and I look forward to your next one. Have a blessed rest of your day!😇

I found this at Walmart about a month or so ago. Mine is doing great. Has new growth. I have it about 12 feet from a south facing window. But I think the big thing is my plant food. Jack's 15-30-15 all purpose house plant food. Most of my plants do good with this. But the fun part is I found this plant in the clearance section because it was not it a Costa farms decorative pot. 😊

YES! I bought one from lowes a few weeks ago. I decided to check the roots a few days after I brought it home and there was a little bit of rot starting. I hadn't even watered it myself yet. Not only did I find the soil staying too wet but also the pot was too big for the root system imo. I removed the mushy roots, downsized the pot, replaced the soil, and treated it with a fungicide and it seems to be doing great now

New sub here. Great timing! I've had my moonlight for about a month too and it's ready to be repotted I think. The growth is super slow. So far it has unfurled one healthy leaf and a couple more are about to unfurl soon. No yellow leaves. It came with fungus gnats when I got it. One of the cuttings they put in there didn't root and the leaf curled up. Otherwise it looks healthy.

Thank you for this video, great advice to change the soil and check the roots. I have lost about 5 different plants from Costa Farm in the last two months. I even emailed Costa Farm thinking it was the coir used on the plants. They never answered my inquiry. Last week I went to the big box stores were I bought the plants and saw the white ceramic pots were filled with rain water. When I ask the employee, she said “they are short staffed and can’t empty the water in the pots” . Then I realized that probably the plants I bought had root rot and although I took them out of the ceramic pot I didn’t check the roots. They are beautiful plants at good prices but if they had not been taken care properly at the store garden we are loosing our money when buying them. I have a collection of pictures I took of all the different plants drowning in water. Too sad.

That’s very true…I have seen them overwatered also and sitting in their shipping boxes for days and sometimes left outside in winter…Maybe a good idea would be to keep the receipt and many stores like Lowe’s can refund us the money if they go down hill and can’t be saved. Buy it is a pitty such beautiful plants are lost from not receiving proper care.

Some of my Moonlights have been getting yellow leaves too so I will be repotting them in Miracle Grow myself mixed with perlite. It's weird how some do great in their original dirt and others don't. You just have to wait and see, but the key is to not wait too long. Lost my Watermelon Peperomia due to not knowing this but my Pilea has done great in its original dirt. It's a learning process and sometimes you kill a plant or two along the way, but that's what it's all about. Experience comes with time and we all are still learning.

Thanks so much for this! I have found exactly the same thing and I think you are saying something important. I understand why the growers use coco coir -- the poor plants in the big box stores do not always get watered regularly or well. But our homes are an entirely different situation. Since coco coir seems to be everywhere now, I am thinking twice and thinking hard about the old advice to leave a plant in it's nursery pot until it is acclimatized to growing in a home.

I normally use a potting soil for indoor and outdoor plants with 30 percent or more of perlite and 20 percent of orchid bark (Miracle grow that has some charcoal) I adjust slightly according to the plant. I have had 2 from costa for about 4 months ( I got one and then another about a month later to experiment) and they are a pain in the you know what. I bought because I have an exotica and argyraeus and they are stupid easy so I assumed this would be too. When I first got them the tips went brown pretty much right away even though I had them near a humidifier. It finally stopped after a few weeks for both. I repotted the second one I got hoping to have a stronger one that didnt crisp up but it is fairing worse, it gets yellow leaves often to the point where half the leaves are gone and has no new growth. The one I still have in Costa soil is doing slightly better, it gets new growth but when a new leaf pops up an old one yellows... I water both only when the leaves have slightly curled but it takes a long time to dry out.. the one I repotted is in 50 50 cactus mix and perlite. I am afraid to remove the one from nursery soil because the fate of the one I repotted. I wonder how yours is doing after a repot? I was hoping to wait until spring to do so and put half the plant in leca and the other half in the soil mix you used. I hope it lives that long. If they don't survive I will not rebuy this plant. I have 20 something plants and have never had as much of an issue before. Its crazy! Every care article I read before buying made it seem pretty straight forward and somewhat simple. It is not.
(I didnt find any mesh when I repotted the one so I assume there isn't any in the one I didnt repot..all I did was move the whole plant soil and all to a terracotta pot to help it dry out a bit faster).
