  • I found a Treubii Moonlight at a plant nursery. The Treubii Moonlight leaves were curling so I knew I had to check on the roots to see if it was something I could fix. I also checked for pests and other issues that the Treubii could have!

I came across this video because this weekend I found an unhappy Moonlight on the clearance shelf at Lowes (for crazy cheap). I wasn't looking for one, but I knew Scindapsus have some value so I'm trying to see what I can do with it. After your video, I'm super eager to dig in and see what's what! Same situation, nursery pot snug inside of a ceramic pot with no drainage. She's far from dead, but you can tell something is wrong. Thank you for the video!
Also I realize this is like two years later, but if you are still looking for plant suggestions, I've recently become obsessed with Syngoniums. They're so neat looking and fun!

I’m glad you took this apart. I thought it was just me. I finally got one and it is not doing well it totally fell apart when i took it out to look at it. I saw roots with no leaves and leaves with no roots. I have a small portion that I’m trying to save. This grower should maybe take a look at that. My suggested plants for your collection Sanseveia Bantel Sensation or Moonlight. Philodendron Mican, Brazil or Birkin and lastly Monstera Siltepecana or Adensonia. All easy and can tolerate various lighting conditions even low light, Have fun. Thanks for the video.

I find it strange they potted that plant like that. Looking forward to an update to see how it grows for you. You might like Aspidistra ( cast iron plant ). Mine is Milky Way. Very slowgrowing but I love that plant. I have very good luck with all Dracaena. Today I was admiring my Pineapple. Dracaena. It does however get evening sun. Last year I got Lemon Lime. Birds Nest sansevieria is another favorite of mine. I am looking for a Chinese evergreen. I have one that is the red-pink, now I want the common green one. I also have Grape Ivy ( cissus ) It had no sun all winter in an East window and it is growing like a weed. I love this plant as well. I would like to get a fiddle fig and yucca plant but might be moving so I'm waiting on that. Do you have any greenhouses near by? 🌿👍🌴🍀🌵🍃🌿

Very good and detailed video! I can’t believe the grower put in cuttings that were not fully rooted or in some cases not rooted at all! I hope your plant continues to grow and eventually thrives.
Thank you for all the information. It’s very helpful! 👏🌿🥰💚

Easy plant suggestion: I have several Hoya Carnosa that were cuttings from a 34 yr old mother plant that i have had for years. They are super easy to care for and pretty forgiving as far as conditions go. I have had it in low light, bright light. and it tolerates neglect. I've lately repotted and took some cuttings and everything is thriving. I love most Hoya and have many but this is by far one of the easiest plant and it's beautiful. Blooms yearly for me several times.

I'm so glad I looked for a video for my recently purchased moonlight plant. After taking all the soil out I found a small plastic basket around the roots like what they grow aquatic plants in! I'm fuming! I will 100% be doing this with all my plants now.

Sister I was applauding Your every word, UNTIL 3:33 with Your suggestion on Untangling the roots. I inspect My new plants in the store, but I do repot them immediately after coming home in My Wonder Soil Mixture. But I NEVER disrupt the Root Ball, simply because it gives added stress to the already stressed Baby. I simply use a slightly larger pot and place soil in the crevices around the pot. Or I use the same pot and use the same technique. The roots will find their way. As in this case it seems that the plant was grown in a shallow pot and then placed into a deeper pot. A shallow pot is used to make a plant grow thicker as seen by this Baby. The leaves grow up not down. Later You can decide which type plant You want to have. So if You want a bushier plant start it in a shallow pot. And don’t disturb the roots. It will take the plant a while for the roots to touch the sides of the pot and start growing again. If left in a ball the roots will continue pushing out new growth and the roots will do their thing by traveling around in the pot. As You know roots grow downwards anyway. So don’t be concerned if they are coming out of the top of the pot. That just means You need to plant it deeper using a deeper longer pot. Good luck.✌🏿

I got 2 from home depot website and had them shipped straight from Costa farms. I put one in cactus soil with perlite. The other I left in the Costa soil the only thing I did was plop it in a terracotta pot because I knew it was moisture retentive. It retains to much moisture I think for too long. It took almost a month to dry out. Its still doing okay but I think it would be happier in the cactus mix. The one that is in Costa soil got some yellow leaves. It was the leaves that were touching the soil directly. I had an issue with both having some crispy tips. I added a humidifier to both and put one on a heating mat. The one on the heating mat stopped giving me crispy tips. I dunno why but it worked for that. I am still learning and trying to keep them both happy but its not as easy as my exotica or my regular scindapsus I forget what its called. It doesn't really tell you when its thirsty like those do. I only noticed the leaves dont feel as thick but they don't curl. I thought they would be easier to care for but its a stunning plant. I am wondering how.yours is doing and what you are doing if it is happy.
If your looking for a plant that always looks stunning but is super easy to care for is lemon lime heartleaf philodendron. I love mine and its just the easiest plant I have ever had. Easy going and always happy.

Thank you so much for your videos. They have helped me so much. I found a trebuii and brought her home…. She looked pretty good at first but her pot was pretty small. I repotted her, and her roots were quite huge and looked really good. However…. A couple days later and her leaves are all folded in and feeL soft…. Our house got pretty cold this past wk…. Could cold weather cause this?

Just wanted to mention many of these Costa Farm plants have a type of netting around the roots, I've found them in this Treubii, Begonias, and a couple others. In my experience this netting has caused me to have trouble later with root rot, not growing well etc.

I found an S. treubii last month at Lowe’s and it was very disheveled & its roots were at the top of the soil and hanging out. I did notice one stem not rooted. My husband was able to get me 10% off. I repotted it & it seems to be okay. My favorite plants are Scindapsus & Aglaonema (super hardy but hides mealy bugs too well). I do want a Cebu blue, S. exotica. & P. hastatum (narrow form), which I’ll wait for a restock at Steve’s Leaves. Im a sucker for the blue hued leaves as well.

Yes, mine was the same. I had potted up shortly after buying it, due to those roots at the top of the pot. A month later the plant(s) was struggling, so I repotted again. The giant roots that were at the top were all rotted, and there were just a bunch of those pieces like you were showing. I'm hoping it survives...

Exact same situation with my CF treubii moonlight--lots of roots curled around the top of the pot, just a few below. I''m fairly new at this and panicked about removing all the soil once I saw how fragile (?) the grouping of leaves was once removed from the pot. I'm thinking there are rootless leaves in the mix, like yours. Will keep a good watch for signs of trouble. TY for your valuable info.

They don’t like direct sun nur do they like wet feet. Let it dry out a bit between watering. With the Silvery Ann or whatever You might call Her, there are 15 different Arten, including Hybreds, the leaves aren’t always straight and do hang a bit. With the Exotica if the leaves are laying down it needs water. With Pothos or Scindapsus they talk to You. If they’re doing well, getting feed a enough water the leaves say hello. Yeah they wave at You. But if things are too wet or dry the lay low. I either left the planting pot out of the Cover pot and check the weight. Heavy no water needed, light water. Or stick Your finger in the soil about 1/2 or 1 inch and if the tip has dirt on it don’t water. And lastly You can buy a Moister Meter. Works great. As I mentioned before I check the roots while making My selections and repot immediately after purchasing it. I know what My soil can do and most of the plants are in Humus. I rarely buy from a Store. I prefer buying on EBay from private Folks. Then again I,live in Germany and Our selection as well as the prices vary dramatically from the US. To eliminate bugs it’s better not to overwater. They flourish with moisture. And remember to let go. Don’t love Your plants to DEATH!! Too much of Anything isn’t good. So let the plant enjoy life. It will tell You when it needs water. The problem with plants dying is that the Plant Parents don’t understand the Plant language. All plants talk to You. But if You are Blind and can’t read sign language, or Deaf that You don’t hear the Baby crying for help, it might be too late before You understand the Baby is Terminally ill. These are very easy plants. Don’t make it difficult by giving too much attention. Things will be fine.

Dear Pettite you are very wrong about this scindapsus you have because you probably never saw the sick houseplant. For almost a year I have been trying to save my scindapsus. Some leaves are curled brown & very soft, some leaves fell off. I created all good conditions to grow: humidity, lighting & temperature...it would probably be easier to buy another scindapsus

    • @brianhardaway9716
      @brianhardaway9716 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Take a look at the rooting system. If the roots are brown, it’s drowning. If the roots are brown and thin it’s drowning and hungry. But if the roots are white things are GREAT!! Cut away all the brown roots and the healthy white roots should be potted together. Take the leaves with a Nod on them and place them in a jar with a little fertilizer to root. It could be that the soil isn’t mixed correctly? Perlite, Worm Poop, marbels or stones to help with aeration, a good soil, and a little coconut fiber. Water the plant thoroughly until water runs out, and let it sit in bright to shady light. No long periods of sun. These plants grow in the shadows. When You research where and how the plants live in Nature, it makes giving them a home with You easier. Watch the leaves too. As the plant gets use to the light conditions and Your Not drowned it the leaves will start talking to you. When You pluck them or lift them they should bounce right back. With the Silvery Ann or Treubii they have thinner leaves that sometimes curl. It’s not always a sign that they need watered. That’s the reason many meet an Untimely Death. The Exotica has firm leaves that when lifted and properly watered spring back in place. If the leaves start getting lighter green to yellow, it’s too much water. Water can give and take away LIFE!! The soil mixture is very import. Don’t give up but know when it’s time to get another one. It’s all about learning.
