      I love finding great plants from you guys but the stores are killing them by improperly caring for them. I gave $20 for a scindapus and when I got it home and looked at it the leaves fell off and I then found it had root rot. This was rt away not days later it was as soon as I got it home. I’ve looked around me everywhere to try and find another one but there aren’t any.

      @@CostaFarms I have a suggestion...some of the big box stores keep your plants outdoors and when it rains they sit in water and rot....maybe offer plants with out the ceramic pot or ship separately...or maybe put holes in them and send them with the rubber stoppers? Thank you!

    Thanks for sharing. I totally understand driving to every Lowe’s in your neighborhood. I have been on the hunt for a zz raven. I have gone to each of the Lowe’s in my town and recently I went to visit my mom in another state and I went to several Lowe’s in her neighborhood. Then, while driving home, a 4hr drive was a 6 hr drive because I stoped at the Lowe’s and Home Depot’s off the free way. I have a problem, I know. It’s crazy because I keep seeing big box shopping videos with a zz raven in the videos. They should definitely sell the same inventory at each store. 🙄 looks like I may have to start calling and harassing the sales people.

    Another some what con to buying from costa farms is sometimes the plants are propagations , potted up without hardly any root system or sometimes no root system. I had this problem with 3 of my scindapsus treubii moonlight. 2 of my plants I bought died because I didn't realize that they were cuttings without hardly any roots. I know scindapsus plants like to dry out so I wasn't watering them till they were dry but, the problem was they were cuttings and needed to be watered more to grow more roots. I thought they was already a established plant with a good root system. So I was watering them as such. Long story short, I lost two moonlights an had to re-buy a third one & water it as a cutting. That one is doing great! 😊 It did become expensive just because I never knew I had cuttings an had to buy 3 of them before I figured it out! So check to make sure the plants aren't just cuttings because watering, then becomes different with cuttings.

    • @Melisawith1Schannel
      @Melisawith1Schannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sheryl! Great suggestions👌 I agree. When repotting I noticed very small cuttings that have not established a good root systems. Definitely something to consider when it comes to watering. Sorry to hear 2 died!! But I'm glad the third one is doing better 😁 thanks for watching!

    I live in the States, and I buy from big box stores all the time. I have all the plants that you've talked about, except the shingle plant. I've only seen it in a store one time, and they were in very bad shape. I don't have a good nursery in the area where I live, so it's big box, or on line. I buy both, but on line is so much more expensive and you get so much smaller plants. I prefer seeing the plants that I'm purchasing, but like I said if I can't find one that I really want. I order. My big problem with big box stores are fungus knats.

      Hi Patricia! I agree with a lot of your points regarding online plant shopping. I also like to see and pick out my plants in person! 👌 And definitely one of the problems with big box stores is that they just water all the plants when the can and this can lead to fungus gnats for sure! The soil is exactly what I was worried about. I just got some plants from them from the grocery store and the employees typically overwater. I’ll repot this weekend. I noticed they typically do pot them in pots way bigger than necessary as well which is fine so they won’t need a larger pot anytime soon.

    • @Melisawith1Schannel
      @Melisawith1Schannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Dominic! Yes the soil is not ideal for certain plants. And overwatering is more common for sure! I agree the pots are either to big oooor can be too small that the plant is already root bound haha if it's too big then the risk of root rot also increases! I'm sure the plant will be happy when you repot it 👌💚🌿

    I've heard some people say Costa farms have patents on certain plants so small growers can't sell them. I'm more concerned about environmental impact of the growing as well. I also would have to say it's probably hard on the environment / workers who make those cheep pots. I'm not for certain but overall I would prefer to buy from them if they are zero waste and carbon neutral. I would be much more imprest with that.

    • @Melisawith1Schannel
      @Melisawith1Schannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Claire! Thanks for sharing 😊 I'm not sure about the patent part either. Good point about the impact on the environment and workers. And yes consumers do like to know that a company is "environmental friendly" 💚🌿

    • @CostaFarms
      @CostaFarms 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Claire: We don't have patents on any of the plants we currently sell, but we do work with plant breeders (such as the guy who developed Raven ZZ and the gentleman who developed Global Green Pothos) who patent their plants. If we find a plant that we think is going to be exciting and passes our test that is patented, we don't mind paying the breeder for the permission to propagate it.
      Unfortunately, we can't say we're carbon neutral yet, but we are working toward it. We've installed solar panels on several of our buildings in Miami; we're actively working to reduce traditional pesticide use by switching to beneficial insects, fungi, and bacteria; and we use a mix of coir and shredded wood (both recycled byproducts of other industries) instead of harvesting peat bogs from Canada to grow most of our plants in. We have an aggressive recycling program and our Sustainability Team is working hard to further decrease our overall impact. If you ever have any questions about what/how we do things, feel free to reach out. We're always happy to talk plants/growing! ---Justin, Costa Farms Horticulturist

      Hi Justin from Costa Farms, You said that you will buy the patent from different breeders ( like for the Raven ZZ & Globel Green Pothos) With that being said, does that mean that when you propagate the plants & sale them, they are still patented & the buyer can't propagate it or resale a start to anyone else? Or does the buyer therefore has to ask you if they can do any propagation or sale any starts? Hope this makes sense & you understand my questions. Btw, I love all my plants that I have bought from you. Keep up the great work! 😊

    Costa Farms has a practice of packing starter plants (in plastic pots) in larger pots and covering with soil. They then sell as more mature plants. Unethical.

      @Melisawith1Schannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yyyeeesss I've recently started seeing people mentioning this on Instagram! I personally haven't bought a plant that was double potted. It's definitely not good for the plant, since the roots will grow out of the first pot and it would be a nightmare cutting it out without losing half the root system 💔😞

    • @Sheryl1026
      @Sheryl1026 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every Aglaonema that I bought from Costa Farms , the root ball was inside a very tiny like hydroponic grow pot ... then placed inside a big normal plant grow pot. The problem with this was that the hydroponic pot was full of roots that were being choked through the slits of the pot. I noticed that my plants were loosing a lot of leaves & browning badly an when I removed the soil, this is what I found to be the problem. I had to cut the hydroponic pot in order to release the roots. It was awful!!!! I bought 5 aglaonemas, an everyone of them were potted up in this manner. So check yours out & make certain that it's not inside those like hydroponic grow pots with the roots being choked out.
